Abstract:A high speed on line eddy current inspection system has been developed. The system allows metal tube, bar and wire to pass through the eddy current probe with variable high speed, and defects can be accurately located, marked and recorded. The highest speed of the inspection is 13m/s. The structure and functions of the system are introduced briefly.

Abstract:The existed semi-automatic ultrasound eddy current testing system is difficult to adapt to the situation of seamless steel tube detection requirements at present. This paper puts forward an ultrasonic eddy current synchronous auto-detection system. The principle of ultrasonic eddy current testing tube and the design of the ultrasonic eddy current probe frame are introduced. Software system uses ultrasonic and eddy current imaging at the same time, and ultrasonic testing’s results can be displayed by A+B+C combination imaging. The quasi three-dimensional imaging system can offer more convenient methods to detect personnel. Experimental results verify the feasibility of the system.

Abstract:The eddy current testing forward model of scanning inspection of multi-layered structures is introduced and simulation work is carried out to reveal the interaction between the scanning coil and defects with different geometric properties. A multi-frequency ECT experimental instrument combined with a scanner is established and scanning inspections are performed to detect the artificial etched flaws with different geometric parameters in the multi-layered structures. The predicted signals by the forward model are compared with the measured signals and the defects are characterized.

Abstract:The forward problem of eddy current detection of defects by scanning conductive multi-layered structures is investigated and the change of the probe coil impedance is modeled by using finite element analysis method. Based on the ANSYS software a fast simulating program is developed and then the coil impedance changes due to the existing of defects in different lengths, shapes and at different locations in conductive multi-layers are calculated. An experimental eddy current testing system combined with a scanner is established and scanning testing experiments are carried out. The simulation and experimental results are compared. The agreement of them shows that the technique studied is promising and can help us to understand the probe responses and can be applied to the inversion model to determine the defect parameters in many important fields ranging from aerospace to energy and transportation industries.

Abstract:In a number of industries, the automatic recognition and classification of defects in multi-layered structures are widely recognized as complex and urgent problems. This paper presents a novel method for automatic recognition and classification of defects during an eddy current (EC) inspection procedure. The signal segments containing possible defect events are detected based on computing the median of signals amplitude and the noise is eliminated using the wavelet packet analysis methods. The principal component analysis (PCA) is carried out to extract features from EC signals. The classification is performed using four different methods: nearest-mean classifier, k-nearest neighborhood classifier, the neural network and support vector machines. The method is tested on the eddy current signals from three different shapes of defect in the multi-layered structures. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the classification accuracy as criteria, the best classifier recommended is support vector machines.

Abstract:Eddy current testing (ET) and eddy current thermography (ECT) are both important nondestructive testing methods that have been widely used in the field of conductive materials evaluation. Conventional ECT systems have often employed to test static specimens even though they are inefficient when the specimen is large. In addition, the requirement of high-power excitation sources tends to result in bulky detection systems. To mitigate these problems, in this article, a moving detection mode of multiphysics structured ET and ECT is proposed in which a novel L-shape ferrite magnetic yoke circumambulated with array coils is designed. The theoretical derivation model of the proposed method is developed which is shown to improve the detection efficiency without compromising the excitation current by ECT. The specimens can be speedily evaluated by scanning at a speed of 50-250 mm/s while reducing the power of the excitation current due to the supplement of ET. The unique design of the excitation-receiving structure has also enhanced the detectability of omnidirectional cracks. Moreover, it does not block the normal direction visual capture of the specimens. Both numerical simulations and experimental studies on different defects have been carried out and the obtained results have shown the reliability and detection efficiency of the proposed system.

Abstract:The electromagnetic eddy current non-destructive testing system enables the non-destructive analysis of surface defect information on tested materials. Based on the principles of eddy current detection, this paper presents a digital eddy current detection method using high-speed sampling based on STM32. A differential eddy current coil is used as the detection probe, and the combination of a differential bridge and a differential amplifier circuit helps to reduce common-mode noise interference. The detection signal is collected via an STM32-based acquisition circuit and transmitted to the host computer through Ethernet for digital demodulation processing. The host computer performs operations such as smoothing averaging, sinusoidal fitting, and outlier removal to extract the amplitude and phase of the detection signal. The system also visually displays the condition of the tested object's surface in real time through graphical visualization. Testing showed that this system can operate at frequencies up to 8.84 MHz and clearly identify defects as narrow as 1 mm on the surface of the tested steel plate.

Numerical Simulation on Eddy Current Evaluation at High Speed

Abstract:The high-speed Eddy Current inspection systems using eddy current method (EC) are in great demand in online evaluation of specimen integrity and structural health monitoring on metallic materials, in order to improve the efficiency of inspection. Whereas, compared to static EC systems, velocity effect exists in dynamic EC systems because of the relative movement between excitation probe and conductive specimen. It alters the distribution of electromagnetic field and distorts the signals measured, which increases the difficulties in signal interpretation and decreases the accuracy of defect characterization. In this paper, velocity effect and its influence on high-speed EC systems is investigated by conducting numerical simulations. Multiphysics Modelling Package, FEMLAB V3 has been employing for the 2D/3D modelling of the system, calculation of electromagnetic field, and observation of velocity effect. Furthermore, based on the analysis on the simulation results, the rectangular coil and the high-frequency excitation can be applied to the elimination of velocity effect.

Abstract:A new GMR eddy current probe and detection system are designed.The framework,principle of the system,problems that should be paid attention during the design and the key techniques in this system are emphasized.Specimen aluminium is used in the detecting experiment verification.The experiment results show that the GMR eddy current probe possesses higher sensitivity and deeper defect detection capability compared with the conventional coil probe during deep defect inspection of the multi-layered conductive structures.

Abstract:The use of the eddy current technique (ECT) for the non-destructive testing of conducting materials has become increasingly important in the past few years. The use of the non-destructive ECT plays a key role in the ensuring the safety and integrity of the large industrial structures such as oil and gas pipelines. This paper introduce a novel ECT probe design integrated with the distributed ECT inspection system (DSECT) use for crack inspection on inner ferromagnetic pipes. The system consists of an array of giant magneto-resistive (GMR) sensors, a pneumatic system, a rotating magnetic field excitation source and a host PC acting as the data analysis center. Probe design parameters, namely probe diameter, an excitation coil and the number of GMR sensors in the array sensor is optimized using numerical optimization based on the desirability approach. The main benefits of DSECT can be seen in terms of its modularity and flexibility for the use of different types of magnetic transducers/sensors, and signals of a different nature with either digital or analog outputs, making it suited for the ECT probe design using an array of GMR magnetic sensors. A real-time application of the DSECT distributed system for ECT inspection can be exploited for the inspection of 70 mm carbon steel pipe. In order to predict the axial and circumference defect detection, a mathematical model is developed based on the technique known as response surface methodology (RSM). The inspection results of a carbon steel pipe sample with artificial defects indicate that the system design is highly efficient.

Abstract:The high-speed magnetic flux leakage detection system is set up by means of converting the steel pipe linear hi-speed scanning movement into a rotary hi-speed scanning movement. It is identified via analysis that eddy current effect is the root cause for drifting of the baseline. And why eddy current effect exists during the hi-speed MFL detection process is explained from a physical point of view. Also analyzed is the distribution characteristics of the eddy current effect. Relevant comparative analysis shows that 0～12 m/s scanning speed produces little impact on the test signal amplitude value. However,due to the fact that eddy current effect does exist,the baseline of the detection signal waveform is caused to be drifted,and the baseline drifting direction depends on the locations of the magneto sensors mounted in the magnetizer. The trouble of baseline drifting can be fixed by means of some software compensation and adjustment.

Abstract:This letter proposes a novel motion-induced eddy current based thermography (MIECT) for high-speed inspection. In contrast to conventional eddy current thermography (ECT) based on a time-varying magnetic field created by an AC coil, the motion-induced eddy current is induced by the relative motion between magnetic field and inspected objects. A rotating magnetic field created by three-phase windings is used to investigate the heating principle and feasibility of the proposed method. Firstly, based on Faraday’s law the distribution of MIEC is investigated, which is then validated by numerical simulation. Further, experimental studies are conducted to validate the proposed method by creating rotating magnetic fields at different speeds from 600 rpm to 6000 rpm, and it is verified that rotating speed will increase MIEC intensity and thereafter improve the heating efficiency. The conclusion can be preliminarily drawn that the proposed MIECT is a platform suitable for high-speed inspection.

Abstract:Magnetic flux leakage method (MFL) and eddy current method (ECT) are typical electromagnetic non-destructive testing (NDT) methods used for non-destructive evaluation. The two methods are complementary in terms of defect detection and material characterisation capabilities. There is a great demand in online metal evaluation and defect characterisation such as pipeline and rail track. At high speed measurement of MFL, in addition to magnetic flux, eddy currents exist in metal specimen. These currents alter the pro le of electromagnetic field and increase difficulty in signal interpretation and defect characterisation.]it this paper, eddy currents generated by high-speed movement and their characterisation in high-speed MFL inspection systems are investigated by using numerical simulations. Similarly, the signal responses to surface defects from ECT inspection systems are also analysed. Simulation conclusions are presented.

Abstract:Directing against the disadvantage of the complicated hardware and strict operation of traditional eddy current testing instrument, a set of smart eddy current nondestructive testing instrument was developed and the related software and hardware were designed. Current virtual instrument technology and the software using CVI platform of NI Company with function of PC control, data processing, communication and interface display were adopted. The instrument was more simple in hardware, convenient in debugging and lower in cost.

Abstract:For the purpose of real-time position inspection of components with large curved metallic surfaces by using a flat flexible eddy current sensor array,the measurement technology is investigated and the testing method based on time division multiplexing(TDM) technology is introduced for the eddy current array.The sensing probe and testing circuits of the sensor system are well designed to make the system circuits simpler and reduce the cross-talk of the array elements.Experiments prove that the performance of the sensor system is improved,and it can realize the rapid and high accuracy measurement of the eddy current sensor array.
