Abstract:In order to effectively reduce the outline dimension of the equipment,the assemble angle of blade in impression of the brake was changed to raise the braking moment and a optimize checking calculation by finite element ANSYS/FLOTRAN software was made.The optimized assemble angle is 1.5 times more than the former braking moment.

Abstract:Cam-lobe radial-piston hydraulic motors are widely used in large heavy-duty machinery as direct-drive components of hydraulic systems. Due to their extremely high output torque and power density, the wet brake equipped with the hydraulic motors are necessary to achieve ultra-high braking torque in a compact space. However, due to a large number of internal friction pairs and small fit clearance between multiple friction pairs in wet brake, the rotation of the friction pairs in non-braking state will cause large friction torque loss and obvious temperature rise, thereby leading to the thermal failure of wet brake. How to optimize the structure of friction pairs to reduce the temperature rise of wet brake in non-braking state is a persistent challenge. Existing structure optimization design approaches of friction pairs in brakes mainly focus on the structure of each friction pair, which ignore the effect of fit clearance between the friction pairs on the temperature rise of brakes. Nevertheless, the fit clearance between friction pairs is an important factor that affect the temperature rise. For that, this study proposes a two-step structure optimization design approach of friction pairs for low-temperature rise wet brake in hydraculic motor, which simultaneously considers the fit clearance between the friction pairs and the structure of each friction pair. In this approach, the design process could be divided into two steps: firstly, the influence of fit clearance between multiple friction pairs on the temperature rise of wet brake in non-braking state is analyzed and optimized by the temperature rise theoretical model; secondly, in order to further reduce the temperature rise of wet brake, the oil groove structure of each friction plate are introduced and optimized by fluid-solid-thermal coupling simulation method. By this approach, the low-temperature rise structure of friction pairs with the optimized fit clearance between multiple friction pairs and oil grooves of each friction plate. Finally, a series of experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the design approach. The result show that the temperature rise of wet brake could be effectively reduced 12% by optimizing the structure of wet brake, demonstrating that the structure optimization design approach could provide a theoretical guidance to design low-temperature rise wet brake for large torque hydraulic motors.
3-D Integrated Optimization of Blade Numbers for Vehicular Hydraulic Retarder

Abstract:To optimize the parameters of blade numbers of vehicular hydraulic retarder, a 3-D integrated optimization platform was established. The brake torque of hydraulic retarder was calculated with CFD solver and DOE technique of design variable. With DOE results, the RSM model was built to get the optimum parameters. The relationship of internal flow field and brake performance with the varying blade numbers was analyzed and concluded. Comparison of experimental data and simulation results before and after the optimization showed that the brake performance of hydraulic retarder with the optimum parameters was improved observably, and the 3-D integrated optimization platform was accurate and reliable.

Abstract:The brake system of airplanes transforms kinetic energy into heat by friction.Heat causes physical and chemical instability of brake disc,which results in insecurity to the system.Consequently,it is of great significance to simulate the temperature field of airplane brake disc.In this paper,a Finite Element Model is established.In the elements,when the temperature is linear to the coordinates,the element equation is obtained by application of Galerkin method.The grid is knitted from tetrahedrons.This paper focues on theoretical analysis and digital simulation by ANSYS.The result meets the actual braking condition,and demonstrates the effectiveness of the finite element model applied in practical design.
Surface Structure Design of High Speed Heavy Duty Brake Disc Based on Topography Optimization

Abstract:During the braking process of high-speed and heavy-duty brake discs, the surface of the brake disc will produce a certain displacement and stress. The purpose of improving the braking effect can be achieved by reducing the surface structure flexibility and increasing the surface heat dissipation speed. In this paper, through the static analysis of the brake disc under high-speed and heavy-load conditions, the brake disc displacement cloud map and stress cloud map are obtained, and the equivalent surface conditions are determined based on this. Based on the equivalent surface conditions of the brake disc, the surface topography optimization method was used to establish a mathematical model of multiple equivalent surface conditions at different braking positions during one cycle of braking. Combined with the mathematical model, the finite element model of the brake disc surface flexibility optimization under multiple working conditions is established, and the optimization results under the constraints of different pattern groups are compared, and the surface structure with the smallest optimized flexibility value is selected. The optimization results show that the surface flexibility of the brake disc before and after optimization is reduced by 82.91%. Based on the optimization results, the surface structure of the brake disc is reconstructed, and a surface structure that meets the requirements of minimizing the weighted flexibility of multiple operating conditions is designed.

Abstract:An Aquila optimizer-back propagation (AO-BP) neural network was used to establish an approximate model of the relationship between the design variables and the optimization objective to improve elevator block brake capabilities and achieve a lightweight brake design. Subsequently, the constraint conditions and objective functions were determined. Moreover, the multi-objective genetic algorithm optimized the structural block brake design. Finally, the effectiveness of the optimization results was verified using simulation experiments. The results demonstrate that the maximum temperature of the optimized brake wheel during emergency braking was 222.09°C, which is 36.71°C lower than that of 258.8°C before optimization, with a change rate of 14.2%. The maximum equivalent stress after optimization was 246.89 MPa, 28.87 MPa lower than that of 275.66 MPa before optimization, with a change rate of 10.5%. In addition, the brake wheel mass was reduced from 58.85 kg to 52.40 kg, and the thermal fatigue life at the maximum equivalent stress increased from 64 times before optimization to 94 times after optimization.

Abstract:Due to their exceptional ability to endure heavy loads, cam-lobe radial-piston hydraulic motors are extensively utilized in heavy machinery. The wet brake is a key part capable of providing highly braking torque, which has numerous friction pairs and a compact structure. However, there exists a challenge in solving the issue of irrational pressure distribution which leads to non-uniform heat flux distribution and severe wear failure of the brake discs. For this, an innovative method to optimize the wet brake's loading structure has been developed to address the issue of non-uniform heat flux distribution. A thermomechanical coupling finite element (FE) model was established to establish a clear correlation between loading structure parameters and contact pressure distribution on the brake disc. An innovative equal heat flux criterion was introduced to guide the optimization process. Simulation results confirmed that the optimized loading structure achieved a brake disc contact pressure distribution aligned with the ideal heat flux density criteria. Experimental validation further demonstrated a notable reduction of up to 44.39 % in maximum wear depth (h max ) across different radii of the brake disc compared to the unoptimized structure. These findings underscore the efficacy of our approach in reducing wear rates and enhancing durability of the wet brakes.

Abstract:The analytical and evaluation model for the operation functions of motorcycle brake was established,the method of adopting optimization design and sensitivity analysis has been put forward to carrying out the design on motorcycle handlebar.The structural parameters of handlebar that affect the braking functions was analyzed,and the mathematic model for evaluating the operation functions of handlebar has been set up.By means of optimization design on the operation functions of handlebar,the problems of blindness on handlebar design among actual design and low designing efficiency has been solved.

Abstract:As an important basis for its structural optimization design, the heat transfer performance has a key influence on the reliability of automobile brake. Based on the finite element method, the transient heat transfer of automobile disc brake is analyzed under the condition of dynamic convection heat transfer coefficient. According to the simulation results, the CCD (Central Composite Design) sampling scheme is used to transform the optimization variable and target variable into multiple design points in the decision space. The optimization variable includes the total thickness, the height of the ventilation slot, the angle between the sides of the ribs, the number of ribs while the target variable includes the mass and temperature peak. According to the multiple quadratic regression model, the response surface function is constructed, and the approximate model of optimization analysis is obtained. The error analysis shows that the response surface function is equipped with good fitting accuracy. In order to facilitate the extremum search, the optimization of the quality is transformed into the constraint condition, and the multi-objective optimization problem of the brake disc is transformed into the single objective optimization problem. Through the sequential quadratic programming method, the Pareto optimal solution set of the optimal mathematical model is found. The results show that the temperature peak value is reduced by 7.8 % under the condition where the quality of the ventilation plate is basically unchanged. By weighting the Pareto optimal solution sets of different quality intervals, a good result evaluation of ventilation panel optimization is achieved.

Abstract:The braking phenomenon is an aspect of vehicle stopping performance where with kinetic energy due to the speed of the vehicle is transformed into thermal energy via the friction between the brake disk and its pads. The heat must then be dissipated into the surrounding structure and the airflow around the brake system. The frictional thermal field during the braking phase between the disk and the brake pads can lead to excessive temperatures. In our work, we presented numerical modeling using ANSYS software adapted in the finite element method, to follow the evolution of the global temperatures for the two types of brake disks, full and ventilated disk during braking scenario. Also, numerical simulation of the transient thermal and the static structural analysis were performed here sequentially, with coupled thermo-structural method. Numerical procedure of calculation relies on important steps such that the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) and thermal analysis have been well illustrated in 3D, showing the effects of heat distribution over the brake disk. This CFD approach helped in the calculation of the values of the heat transfer coefficients (h) that have been exploited in the 3D transient evolution of the brake disk temperatures. Three different brake disk materials were tested and comparative analysis of the results was conducted in order to derive the one with the best thermal behavior. The current numerical results were in good agreement with the previous experimental results available in literature. Finally, the resolution of the coupled thermomechanical model allows us to visualize other important results of this research, such as; the deformations, and the equivalent Von Mises stresses of the disk, as well as the contact pressure distribution on the brake pads. According to the results presented in this investigation, several conclusions can be drawn. The choice allowed us to deliver the excellent rotor design to ensure and guarantee the better braking performance of the vehicles.
Prediction and Optimization of the Disc Brake Squeal Performance with Altair HyperWorks and ANSYS

Abstract:This paper aims at seeking practical methods for predicting and optimizing the brake squeal performance of a passenger car disc brake. The finite element models of the disc brake were built with HyperMesh of Altair HyperWorks 8.0 and the complex modes analysis of each model was performed with Linear Non-prestressed Modal Analysis method of ANSYS 12.0. The predicted brake squeal frequencies were compared with those measured with a brake dynamometer. In order to improve the complex modes analysis results, the effect of changing the friction coefficient between the disc and pads was studied, which was equivalent to calibrating the finite element model by use of the dynamometer test results and resulted in a more accurate model. The topology optimization of the pad and caliper were performed with Optistruct of Alair HyperWorks to eliminate the critical squeal frequencies.

Abstract:Based on study of the energy dissipation during the vehicle braking and the method of the phase transfer in the time region, the fast finite element simulation model for the braking cycle was established. The two dimensional FEA model was used to simulate the full symmetrical cycle brake-disk and brake-drum, and the three dimensional model was used for the hollow brake-disk with the thermal dissipation of the rib in the disk. The transient character of the energy dissipation coefficient, the thermal exchange coefficient, and radiation coefficient were considered, and then the simulation results of the transient temperature field distribution of disk were obtained. The simulation results are validated by the experiment test. So the validity and practicability of fast finite element simulation model are verified, and the model can be used in the anti-heat fade design and thermal fatigue design of the vehicle brake system.

Abstract:The heat energy generated during the braking of an aircraft has quite close relations with its safety; therefore, much research in this field has been performed. The article begins with a review of the existing literature on the temperature field of airplane braking, and reaches the conclusion that there is no theoretical mathematic model with the boundary conditions of heat convection and radiation. This article presents a three-dimensional model using the finite element method which takes into account both of the boundary conditions. The process of deriving the model is explained in detail. The numerical simulation results by ANSYS, which are in good agreement with the empirical data, show the importance of the boundary conditions and the validity of the model. This finding is potentially significant in optimizing the design of airplane disk brakes.

Abstract:The connection between the cooling performance and rotation speed of brake disc was analyzed.In this paper,a CAE solution was used.First,CFD software Fluent was used to simulate the flow and heat transfer coefficient of brake disc.Second,finite element software Workbench was used to simulate the temperature distribution with Fluent results when braking reached steady state under constant braking demand.It is shown that the mass flow rate rises linearly with the speed.Also,convective heat transfer coefficient and thermal load capacity are improved with speed's increasing.

Abstract:This paper proposes an optimization scheme for friction disc-based electromagnetic (EM) brakes, which can achieve higher braking torque at constant volume by maximizing the magnetic circuit utilization. Firstly, the magnetic equivalent circuit is calculated, then the initial dimensions are designed for the EM brakes according to the torque requirement. Secondly, the EM field results are analyzed in the two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method (FEM) environment, respectively. Thirdly, to generate higher braking torque for the EM brakes, the area ratio of inner suction annulus and the outer suction annulus is optimized to make full use of the magnetic circuit characteristics. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed braking torque increasing scheme, FEA simulations are carried out in ANSYS/Maxwell.

Engineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics

Abstract:It is a considerable challenge to develop a mathematical method for modelling the coupling relationship between the control signal and braking performance in the design and optimization, especially with a highly nonlinear system. The present study thus establishes an integrated CFD-aided method, elaborately proposed based on a 1D/3D co-simulation to accomplish a goal of collaborative calculation between multi-physics fields, and conducting the braking and thermal properties that changes dynamically with the control signal. In particular, the 3D model is actually a multi-domain coupling CFD transient calculation, and the 1D model provides the dynamic boundary conditions. These results manifest some interesting issues, such as modelling the prediction interaction between the isolated control signal and dynamic braking capability. The synergies of the blade agitation and centrifugal force in the multi-phases development affect the oil-filling control and braking generation. The control pressure ( P air ) and throttle area ( A out ) are predominated in enhancing braking torque, shortening response time, and improving heat dissipation efficiency. The operations of P air ≤ 3.2 bar and A out ≥ 64π mm 2 ensure a safe and reliable design and then optimize braking and control characteristics. The resulting maximum braking torque is 4070Nm, and the outlet oil temperature is reduced to 138°C.

The influence of parameters changing on temperature field distribution is studied specially. The simulation and calculation of model is carried out by ANSYS. The simulation results show that the model is suitable for the real work condition and is valuable for the research of high-performance braking.

Abstract:The brake caliper bracket (BCB) of the truck front axle would crack when a certain truck is running in 20000 kilometers road test. In view of the above phenomenon, this paper will use Altair HyperWorks to analyze the static strength of the BCB according to its working principle and load cases. The topology optimization will be done based on the reason found out before. Form the result of the topology optimization, the modified design for the BCB is carried out. Finally, an experiment result is given to check it is correct.
