Abstract:A complete model of the ventilation system of a bulb tubular turbine generator is proposed for the numerical analysis of fluid field. With the calculated velocity of airflow in the ventilation system, the coefficients of heat transfer are obtained, and the stator and rotor temperature fields are calculated further. Due to different design of stator shell to prevent the erosion of which by the stream, the influence on temperature distribution are compared. Numerical results are reported to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.
Analysis of Magnetic-Thermal Coupled Fields in the End Region of Large Turbine-Generators

Abstract:This paper presents a novel strategy to calculate the eddy current, loss and temperature fields of the end region of a 1000 MW turbine-generator. Discretization is needed only in the radial/axial plane. The magnetic-thermal coupled field under different operating modes is calculated by an integrated computing system, which is developed by using commercial software ANSYS being nested in Visual-Fortran. The numerical computed temperature is well coincident with the test result of a 1000 MW turbine-generator. The presented method provides a reliable base to predict the advancing capability of the generator.

Abstract:With the increasing difference between Peak and valley loads in the power network, the needs of peak-regulation in the power network are becoming increasingly prominent, hence, the feasibility study for implementing the concrete scheme of new technology for composite heat-accumulation and power-generation in thermal power plant has been carried out. Taking the steamturbine-generator set of 600MW in a domestic power plant as example, The peak-regulation unit of composite heat-accumulation and power-generation in a 600MW+120MW thermal power plant has been made up, the selection and determination of its constituents and main parameters having been analyzed and calculated. In terms of theory, the feasibility and reasonableness of said scheme have been verified.

Abstract:In view of the policy of energy conservation and environmental protection,there has been many highpressure and high-temperature steam turbine units working at high exhaust pressure condition during all winter. This thesis focuses on 50 MW units under high exhaust pressure condition and adopts two methods of thermal calculation under rated condition and variety condition. Given 0.032 MPa of exhaust pressure of turbine,calculation shows that reheat is able to meet the inhabitants heating demand of 1,820,000 square meter, 30,877 tons of coal would be saved,and the exhaust of CO2, SO2, ash, etc. would be reduced greatly.

Abstract:A three dimentional finite element analysis of the temperature field and the thermal stress field regarding a 50MW steam turbine's high pressure cylinder in a powr plant under different operation conditions has been carried out. The results show, the position of calculated max. stress tallies completely with that of the cracked cylinder, providing important technical basis for evaluating the steam cylinder's safety and calculating the said cylinder's residual service-life.

Abstract:With the increasing of the gas turbine inlet temperature, the radiative heat transfer plays a more important role in the total heat transfer. In this paper, a high temperature test rig has been built to research the radiative effect in high temperature film cooling. The test section is made up of a high temperature hot gas channel and a middle temperature coolant air channel which are separated by a flat plate with a row of film cooling holes. The goal is to analyze the effects of radiation and its interaction between conduction and convection in the internal and film cooling which consider the heat transfer in both gas and solid. Meanwhile, the numerical study on the test cases are also carried out by combining conjugate heat transfer with radiative models. The fluid and solid regions were solved simultaneously. The Discrete Ordinates (DO) model and the Weighted Sum of Gray Gases Model (WSGGM) has been used to solve the radiative transfer equation for the radiation modeling. The results show that the temperature of the plate increase greatly when the radiation is taken into account and the temperature gradient through the plate becomes much larger. The temperature distribution has been changed and become smoother in spanwise direction. The results also indicate that the internal emissivity of the inlet has an influence mainly on the whole temperature of the plate, which suggests that the control of inlet emissivity is a good way for prevent over-high temperature on the first stage gas turbine vane.

Abstract:Focusing on the investigation of a 3 MW wind-turbine gearbox, this paper's aim is to address the challenge of turbine shutdown due to the internal oil temperature exceeding its limits. Additionally, there is the difficulty in measuring the internal temperature. To tackle these issues, a thermal network model for the entire gearbox was developed. This model is based on an analysis of the thermodynamic behavior of the three-stage transmission in the wind-turbine gearbox and internal oil-spray lubrication. Through this model, thermal balance equations were established to predict the steady-state temperatures under different operating conditions. This study delved into the calculation methods for the power loss of heat sources in thermodynamic balance equations and the calculation methods for different types of thermal resistance between nodes, forming an adapted computational process. Applying this model, simulated analyses yielded temperatures at various nodes and bearing temperatures under different operating conditions. These results were compared with actual SCADA data, and steady-state thermal simulations of the high-speed stages were conducted, demonstrating the model's effectiveness in predicting steady-state temperatures for a large-megawatt wind-turbine gearbox. Furthermore, the model-based analysis explored the impact of the oil spray parameters on the gearbox temperature, providing a theoretical foundation for further anticipating overheating malfunctions and optimizing the internal cooling systems.

Abstract:Abstract To improve the heat dissipation and cooling effect of the box and ensure the safe and stable operation of the gas turbine, research on the control and optimization of heat dissipation within the main box of the gas turbine has been carried out. Considering solar radiation, four evaluation indexes, namely, the percentage of high-temperature zone, the percentage of high-speed zone, the average field synergy angle, and the temperature inhomogeneity, are proposed to study the internal flow heat transfer characteristics of the gas turbine box, and an optimization scheme for the internal structure of the box-loaded body is proposed by using the orthogonal test method to improve the ventilation and heat dissipation performance. The results show that the percentage of high-temperature zone in the box body is 2.3%, which is mainly distributed near the junction of gas turbine and inlet worm gear; the average field synergy angle in this region is as high as 79.49°, and the temperature inhomogeneity reaches 0.98, which makes the heat dissipation and cooling effect poorer and is easy to form a localized high temperature; based on the above research to carry out the optimization of the box body structure, the percentage of high-temperature zone is reduced by 95.7% after optimization, and the average field synergy angle and temperature inhomogeneity are reduced to 72.88° and 0.57, so that the heat dissipation effect has been significantly improved.

Abstract:High performance computing is a theory, method, and technology that utilizes supercomputers to achieve parallel computing, and is widely applied in various fields. The problem of thermal deviation and overheating tube explosion on the high-temperature heating surface of coal-fired boilers in large power plants is becoming increasingly prominent, seriously threatening the safe operation of power plant units. In order to solve these problems, an intelligent monitoring method for the overheating status of coal-fired boilers in large power plants is proposed. Analyze the damage mechanism of the high-temperature heating surface of the boiler, and monitor in real-time the temperature exceeding the limit of the heating surface; Constructing gas-phase turbulent combustion models and metal wall temperature models; Analyze the energy consumption loss during the operation of coal-fired boilers, calculate the heat transfer function of the boiler, and complete the intelligent monitoring of the overheating status of the boiler heating surface. The experimental results show that the rationality of the research method is optimal at a relative height of 100 m; The equivalent heat flux density of the boiler has been improved, and the ability to control consumption losses is better; It can improve the wind power consumption capacity of the heating system.
Dealing with problem of over-limit temperature of thrust bearing pad in scooptype water-turbine generator set at Yele Hydropower Plant

Abstract:That the temperature of thrust bearing pad exceeds the alarm temperature designed for unit No.1 at Yele Hydropower Plant impedes the normal operation of the unit.Shutdown analysis shows that nonuniform stress distribution in the bearing pad,the poor heat exchange,the inherent drawback of the cooling system,etc.are the main causes.Some measures are taken to deal with the above problems,including adding of 12 pores with the diameter of 40?mm on the bearing pad to make the oil stream flow more smoothly and rapidly and to increase the amount of heat exchange;canceling of casing tube in cooling apparatus to make the heat exchange between oil and water more sufficiently;adding of 6 coolers and a set of pipeline for water supply and discharge at the symmetrical side of the original pipes.Through the adoption of the measures and reformation of the device,the temperature of the bearing pad returns to its normal value,and the safe and stable operation of the unit is realized.

Abstract:The paper systematically analyzes the reasons of tilting pad bearing overheating problem in the high speed axial impeller and presents solutions, which occurred in trial run of single-stage overhang centrifugal compressor unit. Through the study of the unit operation conditions, the phenomenon of the tilting pad bearing overheating issues were summarized, the reasons were analyzed and the feasible solutions were proposed. The result shows that the single-stage overhang unit overheating issue can be resolved effectively by this solution. Meanwhile, it can be used for the reference to the tilting pad bearing overheating in the other field application.

Abstract:Abstract Integration of energy storage infrastructures into electrical grids represents a crucial milestone in the transition towards energy systems with high penetration of renewables. However, the high cost of the currently available technologies is a significant barrier for their implementation on the industrial scale. High temperature thermal energy storage systems, in combination with bottom steam cycles, are being investigated as potential cost effective alternatives to traditional large-scale energy storage technologies. In this study, by adding a high temperature heat storage device in the cold (hot) section of the reheating pipeline and taking the 300MW extraction steam turbine as the research object, it is concluded that the introduction of the high temperature heat storage device can improve the consumption of wind power and greatly reduce the power supply of the coal-fired unit. The coal consumption rate is analyzed. The ideas and methods for solving the energy consumption of the renewable energy and reducing the peak energy consumption are provided.
Conjugate Heat Transfer Characteristics in a Highly Thermally Loaded Film Cooling Configuration with TBC in Syngas

Abstract:Future power equipment tends to take hydrogen or middle/low heat-value syngas as fuel for low emission. The heat transfer of a film-cooled turbine blade shall be influenced more by radiation. Its characteristic of conjugate heat transfer is studied experimentally and numerically in the paper by considering radiation heat transfer, multicomposition gas, and thermal barrier coating (TBC). The Weighted Sum of Gray Gases Spectral Model and the Discrete Transfer Model are utilized to solve the radiative heat transfer in the multicomposition field, while validated against the experimental data for the studied cases. It is shown that the plate temperature increases significantly when considering the radiation and the temperature gradient of the film-cooled plate becomes less significant. It is also shown that increasing percentage of steam in gas composition results in increased temperature on the film-cooled plate. The normalized temperature of the film-cooled plate decreases about 0.02, as the total percentage of steam in hot gas increases 7%. As for the TBC effect, it can smooth out the temperature distribution and insulate the heat to a greater extent when the radiative heat transfer becomes significant.

Abstract:The gas turbine blades operating at high temperature bear a variety of loads such as centrifugal force, fluid exciting force and temperature load. The research on fluid-thermal-solid characteristics can accurately obtain the operation condition of blades under complex cooling structure, which ensures the operation safety. The research progress and the corresponding results of fluid-thermal-solid characteristics for heavy-duty gas turbine blades at home and abroad in recent years are summarized. Firstly, the researches on the complex cooling structure and heat transfer characteristics of high temperature gas turbine blades are demonstrated. Secondly, the stress characteristics of blades coupled with heat flow are presented. And then, the experimental researches on gas turbine blades at home and abroad are summarized. Finally, thoughts and suggestions for the study of comprehensive fluid-thermo-solid characteristics of heavy-duty gas turbine blades are proposed.

Numerical Heat Transfer Part A Applications

Abstract:In this work, a fast and efficiently design method has been introduced. This design process consists of the overall design and the detailed design. For the overall design, one-dimensional pipe-network computations are employed to obtain several design cases quickly at the beginning. Meanwhile the solid domain geometry and mesh with cooling structures, i.e., film holes, impingement holes, and ribs have been generated to carry out three-dimensional (3-D) heat conduction calculations. Based on the above, a detailed design has been performed by 3-D conjugate heat transfer calculations. The results show that both the average temperature and the mass flow maximum errors between the pipe-network and 3-D conjugate heat transfer calculations are about 10%. In this article, the cooling structure of a gas turbine blade is designed with this platform. The final design results show that the maximum dimensionless temperature on the blade surface is 0.813, i.e., lower than the design requirement. The dimensionless mass flow rate in the first cooling inlet is 0.0168, and the mass flow rate in the secondary inlet is 0.0231.

Abstract:For the safe demand of the blade under the high temperature in USC units,the CFD & EFA theory and method,widely applied in engineering field,are adopted,and the strength of high temperature blade root & groove for USC turbine is analyzed and evaluated.To take an example for solving the heat stress of an actual blade,starting from the solution of convective heat exchange coefficient using CFD method,the paper demonstrates the process of CFD result to the FEA model using interpolating program,as well as the solution method of the temperature field and stress field in turbine start-up.The analysis procedure of heat stress and the method is proposed and it is feasible to conduct strength analysis and evaluation for turbine blade and rim.

Abstract:Wind power is one of the prevailing types of renewable energy, but the reliability of its components is always challenged by the severe service environment, especially on the offshore. Hence, case studies on failed components deserve to be publicly reported for experience sharing and failure prevention. In this event, severe degradations like combustion and abnormal electrical resistance rise were frequently detected on a large number of windings and lead bars within the transformers in 4 MW offshore wind turbines. To solve this problem, a series of characterization methods were utilized to investigate the assembly structure, matrix materials and macro/microscopic morphologies of the failed transformers. Temperature simulation experiment was also carried out to evaluate the normal operating conditions. The analysis results showed that risky factors induced from inappropriate installation, unreasonable design, unqualified fabrication and improper maintenance were the root causes for the failure. Finally, relevant mechanisms were discussed in detail and specific countermeasures were put forward.

Abstract:In view of the continuous increase in the proportion of renewable energy connected to the grid in China and the increasing peak-to-valley difference in electricity demand on the power grid, this paper proposes a high-temperature thermal-storage combined-cycle power-generation system. Using Thermoflex thermal simulation analysis software, a high-temperature thermal-storage combined-cycle simulation analysis system model was established, and the influence of different initial temperatures and pressure ratios on the combined-cycle system was analysed. Sensitivity analysis of factors such as electricity cost, annual operating hours, initial equipment investment, unit efficiency and other factors that affect the net income of the system was carried out. According to the current power-peak-shaving auxiliary service market in China, it is pointed out that high-temperature thermal-storage combined-cycle projects must be profitable and obtain good economic benefits. The results obtained, on the one hand, provide suggestions for the flexibility and transformation of current gas-fired steam generators for peak shaving and, on the other hand, provide references for the subsequent development of high-temperature thermal-storage combined-cycle demonstration projects.

Abstract:This topic mainly research the high back pressure heat supply technology of steam turbine generator unit and the correlation analysis of turbine under high back pressure operating condition. High back pressure heat supply is an energy saving technology developed in order to meet the requirements of energy saving and environmental protection. This technology can not only reduce the cold end losses to improve the thermal efficiency of power plant, but also decrease the energy loss and pollution emissions because it take the place of traditional heating boiler. High back pressure heat supply of steam turbine is to increase the quantity of air inlet and outlet as well as exhaust temperature through improving turbine back pressure. For condensing steam turbine unit of 50 MW studied in this article, back pressure of which rise to 0.032MPa from 0.0046MPa, and the exhaust temperature will increase to 70 °C respectively. Through the calculation of rated condition and variable condition, we can obtain the impact to the unit due to the change of back pressure, and for unit of 50 MW can reduce 30876.9 tons of standard coal consumption in a heating period. It can also decrease the emission of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, smoke and ashes, which effect of energy saving and emission reducing is very obvious.

Abstract:With increased turbogenerator capacity and electromagnetic load, overheating of the complex end parts has become one of the main problems affecting safe and stable turbogenerator operation. In this research, a flow network was built representing the structural and ventilation characteristics of a 330-MW turbogenerator. The fan inlet velocity and pressures (boundary conditions) of each end-region outlet were obtained by the flow network method. The 3-D transient electromagnetic field in the turbogenerator end was calculated, and the eddy current losses (heat sources) of the end parts were obtained by the finite-element method. To study the surface heat-transfer coefficient distribution on the stator-end winding surface, fluid and thermal mathematical and geometric models of the whole turbogenerator end region were given. Using the finite-volume method, the surface heat-transfer coefficient distribution on the complex 3-D stator-end winding surface, fluid-flow distribution, and temperature distribution of the end parts were investigated under rated-load conditions. The calculated temperature results match well with measured data. This research can provide a theoretical basis for calculating the heat-transfer coefficients of the outer surfaces of large turbogenerators.
