Abstract:The prefered ‘strong column-weak beam’ mechanism is not oberseved in most buildings in 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake. The ‘strong column-weak beam’ design method in Chinses code are reviewed. Referring to international seismic design codes and related literatures, it is found that the damage pattern is affected by the following factors: the ratio of column-to-beam strength, over-reinforcement in the beam, contributions of the cast-in-site concrete slabs, scattering of material strength. Nonlinear dynamic analysis of RC moment-resisting frames excited by 20 strong ground motions are carried out to study the required ratio of column-to-beam strength and its heigh-wise distribution. It is found the required ratio of column-to-beam strength increases with the increase of earthquake intensities. Finally, some suggestions are given to ensure the realization of ‘strong column-weak beam’ mechanism.
Seismic Behavior of the Weak-Shear Braced Frame

Abstract:There may exist deficiencies in current codes for strong-shear braced frame designed by amplifying design force of braces artificially.The weakshear brace design was thereby developed to solve the problem.The nonlinear elastic-plastic time-history responses of the two types of frames under 10 earthquake records were analyzed by using finite element analysis(FEA) method.Results show that columns in strong-shear braced frames will buckle in a non-sway mode before yielding of the braces,and then horizontal and vertical displacement of frame increases rapidly.But the deformation of weak-shear braced frame is in a sway mode.Curves of inter-story shear force-lateral displacement and the stress-strain response of the brace and the column do not form a hysteretic loop in the strong-shear frame,and energy dissipating capacity is unable to be developed to reduce the earthquake response.In the weak shear frame,the brace yields earlier than the column,therefore the brace and the frame may deform laterally continuously to develop their ductility and the energy-dissipating capacity to reduce the earthquake response.It is suggested that check should be carried out to insure that the brace yields before the column buckle in a non-sway mode,which make the structure to be a strong column weak brace system.
Seismic Behaviors of High-Strength Bolted End-Plate Connected Composite Steel Beam and Square Concrete Filled Steel Tube Column Frames

Abstract:Utilizing sub-structure methodology,pseudo-dynamic tests, a quasi-static test and a static pushover test were conducted on a two-story and one and a half bay frame, with composite steel beams and concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns connected by high-strength bolts and end plates. The 4∶ 7 scale sub-assemblage frame simulated a portion of a 10 stories and 3 spans plane frame. Seismic performance of the CFT composite frame including failure pattern, displacement response, hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capability were investigated. During pseudo-dynamic test, the stiffness of tested frame had little degradation for frequent occurrence earthquake, and the stiffness dropped by about 13% for design basis earthquake, and the stiffness reduced 20% however the story drift ratio was less than 2.0% for maximum considered earthquake. Initial local buckling at beam and first story column ends was detected after the story drift ratio exceeding 1.6% during pseudo-static test, while no global strength degradation occurred. Even when the story drift ratio exceeding 6.0% during pushover test, the frame could still develop sufficient lateral loading capacity. The high-strength bolted end-plate connections satisfied the requirements of aseismic design and were suggested to be designed as rigid connections within the drift limitation of related code. It is validated that the moment resistant frame with steel beams bolted to CFT columns can provide excellent seismic behaviors and has the potential to be utilized in buildings in earthquake regions.

Abstract:Many RC frame structures were severely damaged with plastic hinges formed at column ends rather than beam ends in the Wenchuan Earthquake, significantly different from the expected failure mode in seismic design code. Based on an investigation of a typical RC frame structure damaged in the earthquake area, time history analyses using a sophisticated finite element method were conducted. Three models were considered, i. e. pure frame, frame with floor slab, and frame with both floor slab and infill wall. A ground motion recorded at the town of Bajiao in the earthquake zone was used for the analyses, and comparison between the three models were carried out to investigate the effect of floor slab and infill wall on the structural base shear, distribution of plastic hinges and failure mechanism. Major findings are: 1, 'Strong column and weak beam' cannot be guaranteed for the RC frames designed according to the current Chinese design code. 2, Infill walls may significantly alter the failure mechanism of the RC frames. 3, Weak story mechanism may easily occur for structures with non-uniform infill walls. These findings suggest that the effects of floor slab and infill wall should be considered in seismic design, the stiffness and strength of columns need be enhanced to achieve 'strong column and weak beam' behavior, and structural elasto-plastic analysis model should take slabs and infill walls into account.

Abstract:The structures under strong earthquake action will achieve the plastic state partially, even collapse. In Wenchuan earthquake most of structures were damaged to different extents. The expected target of earthquake failure modes of structures that were designed according to exiting codes wasn't achieved under strong earthquake excitation; the strong column weak beam concept design wasn't implemented. Investigations of earthquake damage cases show that the earthquake damage mechanism of structure is still not explicit. So in this paper one numerical model, which the effect of cumulative damage can be considered, is build based on ABAQUS software platform, by analyzing the seismic damage of a high-rise structure this paper analyzes the extent of earthquake accumulative damage of structure and compares the research of this paper with the analyzing results of Pushover and with the test results of shaking table. It indicates that the elastic-plastic dynamic analysis method based on cumulative damage model is more reasonable and more reliable and that this model is preferable in describing the earthquake damage mechanism. © 2009 Faculty of Construction and Land Use, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Analysis of Influence of Structural Global Seismic Capacity Induced by Infilis Subjected to Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:According to the actual survey by seismic damage assessment program for building structures in Dujiangyan City after Wenchuan earthquake,it was found that infills got badly damaged.So firstly,several typical damaged modes of infills and failure mechanisms of infilled frame are introduced and summarized,respectively.Secondly,combining the designed 3 types of infilled frames and actual damaged characteristics of infilled frame in the disaster area,functions and influence of infills to the structure are detailed and emphasized with correlative research.The results show that infills can increase the global bearing capacity,lateral stiffness and deformation capacity of frame structures.However,infills can also lead to weak layer failure and torsion failure due to stiffness effect and short column damage due to confinement effect,which would cause badly damaged to the structure and even collapse.Infills are usually damaged more quickly than frame because of their brittle materials,which can absorb earthquake energy in advance.Therefore,an idea of infills as the first line of defense for the building is advised in the end.

Abstract:There are many kinds of serious damage for RC infilled frame in Wenchuan earthquake,so it is significant to study the key factors of seismic performance and propose a reasonable evaluation method for the seismic capability.An actual damaged RC infilled frame in Wenchuan earthquake is simulated and analyzed,then the reasonability of the model parameters and the modeling method are verificated.Based on various typical damage in Wenchuan earthquake,influence of vertical layout and the hole rate of infilled wall,the floor number and the structural measure on seismic performance is analyzed.The conclusions are as follows,it is not beneficial for the infilled frame when the infilled walls are not evently distributed.It is easy to present the short column damage caused by large hole of infilled walls.Reasonable strutural measure can avoid large cracks.State goals are proposed for the main frame and the infilled wall respectively.It is achievable to evaluate the struture performance level applying capacity spectrum method and combining the four-node masonry panel element.It is not reasonable to reduce the period of the infilled frame accordance with the Chinese norm.

Abstract:Based on the damage assessment and strengthening scheme of the full-scale model which is the three-floor frame-supported reinforced concrete masonry short-leg shear wall structure,the strengthened model is tested using the substructure pseudo-dynamic testing method.The applicability of the proposed strengthening technique for the building damaged by earthquake is discussed.Thus,the seismic performance of the strengthened model is proposed to seek the strengthening technique for the structure damaged by earthquake,and it provides important reference for the post-disaster reconstruction after Wenchuan earthquake.

Abstract:To the concrete defect of an 11 layers frame-shear wall structure's ground floor,the influence of the imperfection to the structure is discussed.According to the different ratio of compressive force to ultimate capacity,two repaired methods are provided.Owing to the effect of transverse confining,the concrete strength of columns is increased.Ratio of compressive force to ultimate capacity is lowered and the ductility of structure is improved.According to the equivalent stiffness principal,the structure's force,seismic capacity and deflection are analyzed.And durability is also checked.It can provided consults to the other strengthened engineering.

Abstract:The earthquake resistant abilities,destroyed form and economical capacity of the frame-short pier wall structure with special-shaped columns and the frame-shear wall structure with special-shaped columns were comparatively studied in this paper,by ways of shaking table test and elastic-plastic analysis for a 13-story structure.The results were that the earthquake resistant abilities of the two strcture systems with special-shaped columns were all good.The economical capacity of the frame-short pier wall structure with special-shaped columns was better,and was adapt to mid-highrise residence.

Abstract:To research the seismic damage characteristics, mechanism and vulnerability of multi-storey reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures, statistics and analysis, were made on 930 RC frame structures in Dujiangyan during Wenchuan earthquake, China. Firstly, seismic damage of RC frame structure in Dujiangyan is investigated comprehensively. According to the investigation results, easily damaged locations of this kind of structural system are: infilled wall, frame column, beam-column, joints and stairs. However, a large number of RC frame structures are basically intact or slightly damaged. By using the method of numerical statistical analysis, the non-linear relationship model and the fitting curve of seismic damage investigation samples under multiple seismic damage grades are given. Considering the number of stories, multiple ages and seismic fortification influencing factors, the empirical seismic damage situation of structures under each factor is analyzed, and the non-linear regression curve is developed. The empirical seismic vulnerability matrix and continuous regression function model and curve of RC frame structure in multi-intensity region are established. A calculation model of mean seismic damage index (MSDI) is proposed, and the vulnerability matrix and regression curve based on this parameter are given in combination with the empirical seismic damage investigation data. The above research results can provide a basic reference for vulnerability analysis and intensity scale revision of RC structures.

Abstract:Based on a three-story RC frame, the analysis of the structure with various layouts of infill walls under frequent earthquake was conducted. The results indicate that when the infill walls and their different layouts are incorporated into the structural model, the seismic performance, such as dynamic properties, characteristics of regularity, and internal force distributions would change significantly. It should be also mentioned that because of the constraint of infill walls, the sum of moments at column ends is much larger than that at beam ends at the frame column-beam joints. It is suggested that infill walls should be adequately considered in the mechanical models during seismic analysis.
Analysis of local buckling cumulative damage of steel frame welded connections

Abstract:To overcome the limitation to simulate thestructure under earthquake with tests and three-dimensional finite element method, it is important to search for damage and degradation factors and the degradation characteristics in component stage to improve the accuracy of member model. ABAQUS is used and the non-linear finite element model is proved correct and applicable by the existed steel frame connections quas-static tests at home and abroad. By a large number of parameters analysis, the local buckling cumulative damage phenomena of steel frame connections is further discussed and local buckling cumulative damage degradation distribution curve is obtained. Due to analysis of influence factors, the connections strength degradation is acquired which is a powerful tool for member model analysis considering of damage and degradation. The results show that the panel zone strength and thickness ratios of plates have significant impact on failure mode of connections. By local reinforcement to change the connections failure mode can effectively improve the ductility and energy dissipation, prevent weld cracking that will lead to early damage and fast degradation under large earthquake which would seriously affect the overall mechanical properties of the structure.

Abstract:During the Northridge earthquake in America and the Kobe earthquake in Japan,the form of connections with welded flanges and bolted webs suffered unanticipated brittle fractures in many steel moment-resisting-frame buildings.Many researches on repair and rehabilitation have been carried out for the damaged steel moment connections after the disasters.However,the researches in our own country now lag behind.This article summarizes the causes of the damaged the main approaches abroad of reinforcing the connections with welded flanges and bolted webs.Based on the available experimental results in America,it also displays the design process by analyzing an example,and compares the differences between the notions of the design before and after the modification in China and abroad.It turns out,also confirmed by finite element analysis,that the seismic resistant performance of the connections can be improved after proper reinforcement.

Abstract:Parts of long-span structures destruction in Wenchuan earthquakes are investigated.Some successful anti-seismic cases are synchronously combined to be analyzed.This article suggests the long-span structures` anti-seismic control design strategy,based on the reference and comparison of the structures` breakages or the counter during earthquakes while the structural effect factors are generalized and the experience is summarized,also the foreign building seismic investigation is consulted.On the macro level,the structural lectotype should adopt light structure with preferable wholeness and structural efficiency,furthermore the hung ceilings should be processed by anti-fallen methods.On the middle level,the structural materials should be focused on the steel with predominant ductility and the fabric membranes with non-risk of fall harm.On the micro level,the structural link-nodes could utilize rubber inserts,spring-type damper which dissipate the seismic energy,as to be confirm that the anti-horizon displacement concrete components have adequate reinforcement assembly for anti-seism.

Abstract:The seismic damage of several groups of RC frames in the hardest-hit zone of the Great Wenchuan Earthquake is introduced.In each group,some frames collapsed while others survived,despite that they had similar site condition.The collapse resistance of two typical frames in earthquake is analyzed with elastic-plastic time-history analysis,pushover analysis and collapse margin ratio(CMR) analysis which is based on incremental dynamic analysis(IDA).The corresponding collapse resistance research and calculation methods in foreign countries are introduced.The main influencing factors and the evaluation indices that control the structural collapse resistance,as well as the global redundancy and integrity,are discussed.Based on this study,the following methods are identified to be effective in improving the collapse resistance of frames:(1)guarantee the global loading resistance capacity and lateral deformation capacity;(2)increase the redundancy and integrity;(3)achieve rational yield mechanism with proposed engineering method;(4)buildup dual-system for frame structures with infill walls.Finally,the problems that may need further research on structural collapse are proposed.

Abstract:This work is based on a typical RC frame that was closed to the epicenter and collapsed during the Wenchuan Earthquake. The seismic collapse resistance of the frame was strengthened by attached substructures, including conventional brace, buckling restrained brace (BRB) and viscous damper. Collapse fragility analysis based on incremental dynamic analysis is implemented for each strengthening scheme to compare their effects and to analyze the influence of critical parameters. The results show that the viscous damper performs better than the BRB, and the BRB performs better than the conventional brace. With the same strengthening parameters, the A-shaped bracing scheme is better than the X-shaped scheme.

Abstract:The dynamic response and stability of building structures under accidental loads such as earthquake, explosion, and impact have been focused by experts. The significant influence will be induced once the damaged structure begins to collapse. In this study, a reinforced concrete frame structure model was designed and tested to study the dynamic response law of the structure under the condition of the failure of the middle column of the model structure, the remaining structure successively failed the load-bearing column and continued to be subjected to impact load and uniform load. The analytical method was used to calculate the ultimate uniform load subjecting to the structure under the failure of four load-bearing columns, because its value was less than the load in this test, the structure collapsed. The finite element calculation model was established, and compared the simulation results to the test results to verify its rationality. Then, the influence of the impact energy and the structural stores on the dynamic response of the structure were analyzed. The results showed that the peak value of the dynamic response of the damaged structure did not increase strictly with the increase of the number of failure columns, which may be related to the sequence of failure columns.

Abstract:This paper points out factors causing staircase destruction on the aspects of structural design,material selection and construction technique,through survey on status quo of cranked slab stairs in frame structure destroyed in May-12th Wenchuan Earthquake.SATWE and ETABS software are adopted to analyze changes of integral working performance and internal force of structure after consideration of oblique bracing of stair tread.Construction and design measures are proposed to improve working performance of staircase according to the calculated results and engineering experiences.
