Abstract:With the rapid urbanization and development of metropolises, urban road tunnels have been constructed at an increasing rate, significantly alleviating urban traffic pressure, and improving urban resilience. Fire hazards have become a major threat to modern road tunnels due to the growing popularity of electric vehicles and high-density transportation of goods, particularly flammable materials. Asphalt pavements, as an essential component of road tunnels, may release harmful effluences and smoke under high temperatures, exacerbating the fire and adding risk to life safety. It is hence critical to investigate fire-retarding asphalt materials and their potential use in urban road tunnels pavements. This paper provides a comprehensive review of fire-retarding asphalt pavements for urban road tunnel pavements. The review covers tunnel fire generation mechanisms, evaluation methods, flame retardants for asphalt pavements, and recent developments in flame retardant technologies. By investigating these aspects, this paper aims to better understand the flammability of asphalt mixtures and asphalt pavements in urban road tunnels, promote the research of flame-retardant technology, and ultimately reduce the damage and loss caused by asphalt road tunnel fire accidents. Additionally, this study identifies the limitations of current research and provides an outlook for future research to contribute to the resilience of urban road tunnel structures and the longer service life of asphalt pavement in semi-closed road tunnels.

Abstract:Tunnel fires are of importance in many studies of fire safety and risk assessment as they may cause significant property damages as well as human casualties. Therefore, fire design in Xuefengshan extra-long highway tunnel was studied on a basis of the principle of performance -based fire design by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. In order to evaluate evacuation safety, fire risk times Tfire was firstly gotten through simulations of a middle size fire, and evacuation times Tevacuate was calculated by an empirical formula in the Togawa evacuation model. Meanwhile, fire spreading to other cars was analyzed by radiation theory. Finally, cross passage spacing was optimized. Results are given as follows: evacuation is safe and spacing of 50m or so is more scientific due to braking and larger size fire incidents. Cross passage spacing of 300m is much more reasonable taking construction costs into account.
Research on Thermal Effect of Asphalt Pavement Combustion in Long Tunnel Fires

Abstract:The thermal effect of asphalt pavement combustion during long tunnel fires was analyzed by thermo-gravimetric analysis and computational fluid dynamics(CFD).An idea that the self-ignition point of asphalt was taken as the critical temperature of asphalt pavement combustion was put forward,and the combustion characteristic of asphalt was analyzed by the experiment.Study shows that the tunnel fires under 10 MW are unable to ignite asphalt pavement;tunnel fires with 20 MW may ignite it;tunnel fires reach 50 MW,the asphalt pavement can be ignited necessarily;meanwhile,the influence of asphalt pavement combustion on tunnel fires is limited and its heat release rate won't exceed 2.3 % of fires load commonly.

Abstract:In order to provide convenient transportation conditions,a lot of traffic tunnel was built all over the world,and the length of the tunnel construction is still increasing.However,once the fire,the tunnel structure will be damaged by high temperature,and people inside the tunnel will also be killed by the poisonous and harmful gas caused by combustion due to the internal space of tunnel is limited.And it was many times within such accidents occurred around the world.So,in this paper,the severity and particularity of tunnel fire is explained and some tunnel fire prevention work is introduced based on statistical analysis of tunnel fire accident in recent years.At last,some suggestions of future research on fire prevention of tunnel fire were put forward.

Abstract:Thermo-gravimetric analysis showed that the ignition points of SBS asphalt,flame-retardant asphalt and their corresponding mortars were 417~433 ℃,and their burning rates were 3.3×10-5~9.482×10-5 kg/(m2·s).Burning experiment of 1︰20 scale on the tunnel asphalt concrete pavement under 0~3 m/s air velocity showed that the depth of burned pavement under normal fire condition was lower than 4 cm.Simulations of long tunnel fire under different fire loads and air velocity were carried out by using non-premixed combustion model, κ-e turbulence model and P-1 radiation model.Results showed that no ignition of asphalt concrete pavement occurred when the fire load was lower than 10 MW;for 20 and 50 MW tunnel fire loads,the asphalt concrete pavement could not be ignited if the air velocity was higher than 2 and 4 m/s respectively;the influences of asphalt pavement combustion on tunnel fire were limited as the heat released from asphalt pavement combustion would not exceed 2.3% of the total fire load.Finally,the fireproofing structures of the tunnel asphalt concrete pavement and fireproofing strategies of tunnel fires were proposed.

Abstract:In order to study the fire properties, the variation laws of smoke's velocity field and temperature field in the municipal road tunnel with openings on roof, full-scale tests of tunnel fire are designed and conducted. The variation laws of smoke temperature and smoke spread are gained, for example, temperature of different distance from fire source varies with time, maximum temperature under the ceiling of different distance from fire source varies with longitudinal distance, and temperature at safety height varies with longitudinal distance from fire source, smoke longitudinal spread laws and sedimentation laws. The test data are analyzed with MatLab software and so on. On the base of theoretically analyzing the test data, the test phenomenon are summed up, the security of the tunnel's natural ventilation in fires is evaluated and the corresponding solutions are brought forward. Scientific gist is afforded for construction of future municipal road tunnel with natural ventilation.

Abstract:Transportation tunnel is mostly paved with asphalt concrete pavement and asphalt as one component of which,is inflammable and once it catches fires,large quantities of heat,smoke and poisonous gas are produced releasing and spreading quickly,which seriously hinders escape and rescue and harms traffic safety heavily.In view of the huge damage caused by tunnel fires,flame retardant modification by mineral inorganic was proposed in this paper.In addition the flame retardancy,mechanism and safeties of this technique were investigated systematically based on plenty of tests.The Results showed that this technique can be used to improve the safeties of tunnel fires.

Abstract:Highway tunnels are mostly paved with asphalt concrete pavement. One of the components, asphalt is inflammable. And once it is ignited, large quantities of heat, smoke and poisonous gas are released and spread quickly, in tunnel fire, which will cause the difficulties of the escape and rescue seriously. This paper presents research on mineral-inorganic flame-retardant used in asphalt concrete pavement to avoid the huge damage caused by tunnel fires. The mechanism of flame retardancy was investigated systematically based on plenty of tests. Results indicated that the flame-retardant technique can slow the fire spreading and prolong the time of escape and rescue.

Abstract:In order to research the fire properties in the tunnel with openings on roof,full-scale tests of tunnel fire were designed and conducted.The variation laws of smoke temperature and smoke propagation are gained,for example,the temperature at different distance from the fire source varies with time. Those tests data were analyzed with MatLab software and the laws of smoke were gained,such as the temperature under the ceiling of different distance from the fire source varying with longitudinal distance,temperature at the safety height varying with longitudinal distance from the fire source,as well as smoke longitudinal propagation laws and sedimentation laws.Bases on the theoretical analysis of the tests data,the security of the natural ventilation in tunnel fire was evaluated and the corresponding solutions were presented.Scientific gist was offered for future tunnel construction with natural ventilation.

Abstract:Road tunnels are critical components of most transportation systems around the world. Ensuring fire safety in road tunnels is more challenging than ever due to the specific features of the tunnels, increased traffic and inadequate safety rules. The analysis of actual fire incidents has indicated that fires in tunnels tend to be hotter, last longer, and to be more destructive than was generally expected. This made rescue operations and fire extinguishment by the fire services more difficult (1-3). Fixed fire suppression systems are used as an effective fire protection measure in many areas of the built environment. However, many countries have not considered them necessary or even acceptable for tunnel protection. There are concerns on the use of these systems in tunnel environments, such as the visibility reduction during evacuation caused by water discharge, the associated high cost for installation and maintenance, their performance in suppressing shielded fires, potential hazards presented by hot steam and deflagration generated in suppressing large flammable fuel fires, as well as limited knowledge on the most suitable suppression systems for tunnel protection (4-7).

Abstract:In order to study the security performance of asphalt mixture in tunnel pavement,through the Marshall test sample burning test,combustion experiments of the asphalt pavement in Tunnel Model and the theory temperature analysis technology of road surface in burning test,the influence of the directly fire source and the high temperature environment on the asphalt mixture are analyzed and studied.The minimum firepoof surface design thickness of asphalt concrete pavement in the tunnel road is proposed.

Abstract:By a lot of tests and research against the fire hazard of the tunnel asphalt pavement,the technological approach of modified safe flame retardant was determined.The scheme of flame retardant property,flame retardant mechanism and safety were analyzed.The feasibility of such kinds of safe and environmental protection flame retardant technology to improve the fire security of tunnel asphalt pavement was demoustrated.The research indicates that this flame retardant scheme can achieve the goal of flame retardant,nonpoisonous,reducing smoke,reducing heat release and the rate of smoke generating to create conditions and gain time for rescue and escape when fire occurs.Thus the operation security of highway tunnel can be improved and the fire damage can be reduced observably.

Abstract:Abstract Fire is one of the biggest threats to the safe operation of highway tunnels, which will not only damage the tunnel structure, but also seriously threaten the people’s lives and property. As a key link of tunnel fire rescue, ventilation and smoke control directly affects the development trend and hazard consequences of fire. Based on the previous research results, this paper introduces the characteristics of highway tunnel fire, the methods and characteristics of ventilation and smoke exhaust, the influence of tunnel structure, and fire extinguishing methods, which has certain reference and guiding significance for the design of fire ventilation and smoke exhaust, the personnel evacuation and emergency rescue in the highway tunnel.

Abstract:The paper is aimed to present two alternative schemes of fire-smoke control and evacuation for extremely long highway tunnels by taking Er Lang Shan highroad tunnel as an example through CFD simulation.For the given purpose,temperatures,pressures,as well as the movements of the smoke current in the tunnel have been analyzed under the two alternative smoke control and evacuation schemes at different fire-and heat-releasing rates(HRR).And,then,corresponding smoke control schemes are proposed on how to make the fresh air forced into the pilot tunnel and how to keep the positive pressure in it by preventing the smoke-spreading inside the tunnel so that the evacuees can escape through the pilot tunnel conveniently.And,finally,proper approaches to the control and evacuation both for the people and the vehicles are simulated based on the principle respectively.

Abstract:Prevention and treatment for tunnel fire have always been the hotspot and difficulty in fire safety research.By comparing the road tunnel fire fighting techniques,it was pointed out that water mist fire fighting technique is suitable for road tunnel fire protection.And on this basis a new kind of tunnel-type water mist fire suppression system was introduced,which adopts modularization design and each module is 18-20m long,and the nominal working pressure is 1MPa.It was applied to full-scale fire suppression experiments in Runehamar tunnel,and the results showed that it could control or extinguish 100MW fire successfully.At last,a typical design of tunnel-type water mist fire suppression system in road tunnel was presented to provide a reference for the design and development of water mist system.

Abstract:The basis of a possible fire design and verification approach to the linings of RC tunnels, using the performance-based approach, is presented. Starting from an extensive literature review, a selection of the most relevant tunnel fires was analysed. The study of structural consequences of these real fires may be considered as experimental data of tunnel in fire, to define the possible fire damage levels. Back analyses were carried out to define the main parameters controlling each damage state, whose temperature range is determined via fluid-dynamic analyses based both on fire zone models and Computational Fluid Dynamic Modelling. Therefore, the novelty of this paper is that the proposed methodology introduces the structural damage levels for the tunnel lining in fire, according to a performance-based approach. In the second part of the paper, the proposed approach was applied to a real concrete tunnel to assess its potential fire damage level. First of all, the expected damage level of the underground structure was identified through the gas temperatures reached during different real fire scenarios, where no fire damage was observed. This result was confirmed by analysing both the temperatures and the stresses of the structural lining, through advanced thermo-mechanical analyses.

Study on the Fire Damage Characteristics of the New Qidaoliang Highway Tunnel: Field Investigation with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Back Analysis

Abstract:In the New Qidaoliang Tunnel (China), a rear-end collision of two tanker trunks caused a fire. To understand the damage characteristics of the tunnel lining structure, in situ investigation was performed. The results show that the fire in the tunnel induced spallation of tunnel lining concrete covering 856 m³; the length of road surface damage reached 650 m; the sectional area had a maximum 4% increase, and the mechanical and electrical facilities were severely damaged. The maximum area loss happened at the fire spot with maximum observed concrete spallation up to a thickness of 35.4 cm. The strength of vault and side wall concrete near the fire source was significantly reduced. The loss of concrete strength of the side wall near the inner surface of tunnel was larger than that near the surrounding rock. In order to perform back analysis of the effect of thermal load on lining structure, simplified numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was also performed, repeating the fire scenario. The simulated results showed that from the fire breaking out to the point of becoming steady, the tunnel experienced processes of small-scale warming, swirl around fire, backflow, and longitudinal turbulent flow. The influence range of the tunnel internal temperature on the longitudinal downstream was far greater than on the upstream, while the high temperature upstream and downstream of the transverse fire source mainly centered on the vault or the higher vault waist. The temperature of each part of the tunnel near the fire source had no obvious stratification phenomenon. The temperature of the vault lining upstream and downstream near the fire source was the highest. The numerical simulation is found to be in good agreement with the field observations.

Abstract:Building utility tunnels has been widely adopted as an important solution for the sustainable development of cities, but their unique fire problems have not attracted enough attention to date. With the purpose of preliminarily understanding the fire phenomena in a utility tunnel, this study performed a comprehensive analysis, including the burning behaviour of accommodated cables, hot gas temperature field and enhanced fuel burning rates based on bench-scale, full-scale and model-scale fire tests. The critical exposed radiative heat flux for the 10-kV power cable to achieve complete burning was identified. The whole burning process was divided into five phases. The cable's noteworthy hazards and dangerous fire behaviours were also examined. The two-dimensional (2D) gas temperature fields and longitudinal maximum temperature distributions were investigated carefully, after which a versatile model was derived. The model predicted the maximum temperature attenuation of both upstream and downstream flows reasonably well. Finally, the phenomenon of enhanced fuel burning was explored. A multivariate cubic function that considers the global effects of relative width, height and distance was further proposed to estimate the enhancement coefficient. The current findings can provide designers and operators with valuable guidance for the integrated promotion of utility tunnels' fire safety level.
