Abstract:Tunnel fires pose a significant threat to the tunnel structure and personnel escape due to the extreme heat and high toxicity smoke accumulated in tunnel. With the advancement of transportation systems, the environmental conditions within tunnels have become increasingly complex, leading to diverse challenges in tunnel fire safety. Over recent decades, researchers have developed diffusion models for predicting the temporal and spatial distribution of temperature and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations in tunnel fires using both experimental and simulation methods. However, recent progress in tunnel and smoke control technologies has introduced additional factors that influence smoke diffusion and distribution. Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive studies comparing and analyzing the distribution characteristics of fire smoke in tunnels under varying conditions, such as different tunnel dimensions, atmospheric environments, and ventilation or smoke exhaust systems. This gap in knowledge poses significant risks as it limits our understanding of how to effectively manage and mitigate the dangers associated with tunnel fires. Hence, this paper aims to summarize the temporal and spatial distribution patterns of smoke temperature and CO concentration under diverse tunnel conditions. By identifying their distinguishing characteristics, this work tries to provide theoretical insights for understanding and optimizing the critical parameters related to tunnel fire safety and improve overall tunnel fire management strategies.
