Abstract:This paper attempts to initiate the study of covers of finitely generated S-acts over monoids. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a monoid to ensure that n-generated S-acts have strongly flat covers, Condition (P) covers, and projective covers. The main conclusions extend some known results. We also show that Condition (P) covers of finitely generated S-acts are not unique, unlike strongly flat covers. Additionally, we demonstrate the property of Enochs' X-precover of S-act A, where X denotes a class of S-acts that are closed under isomorphisms.

Abstract:In 1971, inspired by the work of Lazard and Govorov for R -modules over a ring R , B. Stenström proved that an S -act over a monoid S is isomorphic to a directed colimit of finitely generated free S -acts if and only if it is both pullback flat and equalizer flat. Such acts are now usually called strongly flat. In 1991, S. Bulman-Fleming discovered that every pullback flat S -act is in fact strongly flat by developing a new "interpolation" Condition ( PF ) for pullback-preservation. In 2005, V. Laan and S. Bulman-Fleming obtained a version of the Lazard-Govorov Theorem for S -posets over a pomonoid S , in which subpullbacks and subequalizers now take on the role previously played by pullbacks and equalizers. However, unlike the situation for acts, S. Bulman-Fleming showed in 2009 that subpullback flat S -posets need not be strongly flat, and also T. Zhao found in 2022 that Condition ( PF ) does not imply strongly flatness for S -posets. The present paper is devoted to the study of subpullback flatness and Condition ( PF ) in the context of S -posets over a pomonoid S . First we unexpectedly show that subpullback flatness is equivalent to Condition ( PF ). Furthermore, we give some classifications of pomonoids by subpullback flatness of (cyclic, Rees factor) S -posets, and give some classes of pomonoids that all (cyclic) S -posets have a PF -cover. Finally, we investigate products of subpullback flat S -posets.

Abstract:Let S be a pomonoid and I a proper right ideal of S. In a previous paper, using the amalgamated coproduct A(I) of two copies of S S over I, we were able to solve one of the problems posed in S. Bulman-Fleming et al. (Commun. Algebra 34:1291–1317, 2006). In the present paper, we investigate further flatness properties of A(I). We also solve another problem stated in the paper cited above. Namely, we determine the condition under which Rees factor S-posets have property (P w ).

Abstract:We discuss residual finiteness and several related separabilityconditions for the class of monoid acts, namely weak subact separability, strongsubact separability and complete separability. For each of these four separabilityconditions, we investigate which monoids have the property that all their (finitelygenerated) acts satisfy the condition. In particular, we prove that: all acts over afinite monoid are completely separable (and hence satisfy the other three separabilityconditions); all finitely generated acts over a finitely generated commutativemonoid are residually finite and strongly subact separable (and hence weakly subactseparable); all acts over a commutative idempotent monoid are residually finiteand strongly subact separable; and all acts over a Clifford monoid are stronglysubact separable.

Abstract:An axiomatizability criterion is found for the class of subdirectly irreducible S -acts over a commutative monoid. As a corollary, a number of properties are presented which a commutative monoid should satisfy provided that the class of subdirectly irreducible acts over it is axiomatizable. The question about a complete description of monoids over which the class of subdirectly irreducible acts is axiomatizable remains open even for the case of a commutative monoid.

Abstract:Flatness in categories of modules over rings has been transferred to categories of acts over semigroups by Stenström in 1971. In this note we will focus on commutative cancellative semigroups with unit ("monoids") and show that this notion is useful too in considering arithmetical questions. The notion of factorable (resp. pre-Schreier) modules is extended to acts over monoids. For example it is shown that these acts can be characterized by flatness.

Topological finiteness properties of monoids. Part 2: special monoids, one-relator monoids, amalgamated free products, and HNN extensions

Abstract:We show how topological methods developed in a previous article can be applied to prove new results about topological and homological finiteness properties of monoids. A monoid presentation is called special if the right-hand side of each relation is equal to $1$. We prove results which relate the finiteness properties of a monoid defined by a special presentation with those of its group of units. Specifically we show that the monoid inherits the finiteness properties $F_n$ and $FP_n$ from its group of units. We also obtain results which relate the geometric and cohomological dimensions of such a monoid to those of its group of units. We apply these results to prove a Lyndon's Identity Theorem for one-relator monoids of the form $\langle A \mid r=1 \rangle$. In particular we show that all such monoids are of type $F_{\infty}$ (and $FP_{\infty}$), and that when $r$ is not a proper power, then the monoid has geometric and cohomological dimension at most $2$. The first of these results resolves an important case of a question of Kobayashi from 2000 on homological finiteness properties of one-relator monoids. We also show how our topological approach can be used to prove results about the closure properties of various homological and topological finiteness properties for amalgamated free products and HNN-extensions of monoids. To prove these results we introduce new methods for constructing equivariant classifying spaces for monoids, as well as developing a Bass-Serre theory for free constructions of monoids.

Characterizing Topologically Dense Injective Acts and Their Monoid Connections

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the concept of topologically dense injectivity of monoid acts. It is shown that topologically dense injective acts constitute a class strictly larger than the class of ordinary injective ones. We determine a number of acts satisfying topologically dense injectivity. Specifically, any strongly divisible as well as strongly torsion free S -act over a monoid S is topologically dense injective if and only if S is a left reversible monoid. Furthermore, we establish a counterpart of the Skornjakov criterion and also identify a class of acts satisfying the Baer criterion for topologically dense injectivity. Lastly, some homological classifications for monoids by means of this type of injectivity of monoid acts are also provided.

On the Internal Sum of Puiseux Monoids

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the internal (finite) sum of submonoids of rank-$1$ torsion-free abelian groups. These submonoids, when not groups, are isomorphic to nontrivial submonoids of the nonnegative cone of $\mathbb Q$, known as Puiseux monoids, and have been actively studied during the last few years. Here we study how the atomicity and arithmetic of Puiseux monoids behave under their internal (finite) sum inside the abelian group $\mathbb Q$. We study the factorization properties of such internal sums, giving priority to Cohn's notion of atomicity and the classical bounded and finite factorization properties introduced and studied in 1990 by Anderson, Anderson, and Zafrullah in the setting of integral domains, and then generalized by Halter-Koch to commutative monoids. We pay special attention to how each of the considered properties behaves under the internal sum of a Puiseux monoid with a finitely generated Puiseux monoid. Throughout the paper, we also discuss examples showing that our primary results do not hold for submonoids of torsion-free abelian groups with rank larger than $1$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce (Rees) artinian S-acts as those acts that satisfy the descending chain condition on their (Rees) congruences. Then, we show that artinian S-acts are those acts whose all factor acts are finitely (Rees) cogenerated. In addition, we continue the study of (Rees) noetherian S-acts, namely, those acts whose (Rees) congruences are finitely generated. Moreover, as a useful tool for the investigation of chain conditions, we prove that the properties of being (Rees) noetherian and artinian are inherited in Rees short exact sequences. Next, we specifically consider the chain conditions on monoids. Finally, we prove that every right Rees artinian, commutative monoid is right Rees noetherian.

Abstract:In this paper, we first introduce the notions of superfluous and coessential subacts. Then hollow and co-uniform S-acts are defined as the acts that all proper subacts are superfluous and coessential, respectively. Also it is indicated that the class of hollow S-acts is properly between two classes of indecomposable and locally cyclic S-acts. Moreover, using the notion of radical of an S-act as the intersection of all maximal subact, the relations between hollow and local S-acts are investigated. Ultimately, the notion of a supplement of a subact is defined to characterize the union of hollow S-act.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{X}$ be a class of metric spaces and let $\mathbf{P}_{\mathbf{X}}$ be the set of all $f:[0, \infty)\to [0, \infty)$ preserving $\mathbf{X},$ $(Y, f\circ\rho)\in\mathbf{X}$ whenever $(Y, \rho)\in\mathbf{X}.$ For arbitrary subset $\mathbf{A}$ of the set of all metric preserving functions we show that the equality $\mathbf{P}_{\mathbf{X}}=\mathbf{A}$ has a solution iff $\mathbf{A}$ is a monoid with respect to the operation of function composition. In particular, for the set $\mathbf{SI}$ of all amenable subadditive increasing functions there is a class $\mathbf{X}$ of metric spaces such that $\mathbf{P}_{\mathbf{X}}=\mathbf{SI}$ holds, which gives a positive answer to the question of paper [1].

Weakly right coherent monoids

Abstract:A monoid $S$ is said to be weakly right coherent if every finitely generated right ideal of $S$ is finitely presented as a right $S$-act. It is known that $S$ is weakly right coherent if and only if it satisfies the following conditions: $S$ is right ideal Howson, meaning that the intersection of any two finitely generated right ideals of $S$ is finitely generated; and the right annihilator congruences of $S$ are finitely generated as right congruences. We examine the behaviour of these two conditions (in the more general setting of semigroups) under certain algebraic constructions and deduce closure results for the class of weakly right coherent monoids. We also show that the property of being right ideal Howson is related to the axiomatisability of a class of left acts satisfying a condition related to flatness.

Strongly sofic monoids, sofic topological entropy, and surjunctivity

Abstract:We introduce the class of strongly sofic monoids. This class of monoids strictly contains the class of sofic groups and is a proper subclass of the class of sofic monoids. We define and investigate sofic topological entropy for actions of strongly sofic monoids on compact spaces. We show that sofic topological entropy is a topological conjugacy invariant for such actions and use this fact to prove that every strongly sofic monoid is surjunctive. This means that if $M$ is a strongly sofic monoid and $A$ is a finite alphabet set, then every injective cellular automaton $\tau \colon A^M \to A^M$ is surjective. As an application, we prove that the monoid algebra of a strongly sofic monoid with coefficients in an arbitrary field is always stably finite. Our results are extensions to strongly sofic monoids of two previously known properties of sofic groups. The first one is the celebrated Gromov-Weiss theorem asserting that every sofic group is surjunctive. The second is the Elek-Szabó theorem which says that group algebras of sofic groups satisfy Kaplansky's stable finiteness conjecture.

Abstract:An additive submonoid of the nonnegative cone of the real line is called a positive monoid. Positive monoids consisting of rational numbers (also known as Puiseux monoids) have been the subject of several recent papers. Moreover, those generated by a geometric sequence have also received a great deal of recent attention. Our purpose is to survey many of the recent advances regarding positive monoids, and we provide numerous examples to illustrate the complexity of their atomic and arithmetic structures.

Abstract:We consider the general question of how the homological finiteness property left-FPn(resp. right-FPn) holding in a monoid influences, and conversely depends on, the property holding in the substructures of that monoid. This is done by giving methods for constructing free resolutions of substructures from free resolutions of their containing monoids, and vice versa. In particular, we show that left-FPn is inherited by the maximal subgroups in a completely simple minimal ideal, in the case that the minimal ideal has finitely many left ideals. For completely simple semigroups, we prove the converse, and as a corollary, show that a completely simple semigroup is of type left- and right-FPn if and only if it has finitely many left and right ideals and all of its maximal subgroups are of type FPn. Also, given an ideal of a monoid, we show that if the ideal has a two-sided identity element then the containing monoid is of type left-FPn if and only if the ideal is of type left-FPn. Applying this result, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a Clifford monoid (and more generally a strong semilattice of monoids) to be of type left-FPn. Examples are provided showing that for each of the results all of the hypotheses are necessary.

Abstract:In this paper, we shall introduce two monoids. One is called a PM-monoid which contains the symmetric group, the other is called a braid PM-monoid which contains the braid group. We shall develop the theory of PM-monoids and that of braid PM-monoids. The PM-monoids is obtained in the context of the compactification of projective linear group defined by Mutsumi Saito. The structure of PM-monoids is described in terms of matched pairs. We can define braid PM-monoid using a presentation for the PM-monoid. As main results, we show that braid PM-monoids are described by geometric braids and we find a solution to the word problem for the braid PM-monoids.
