Abstract:High-quality lithium niobate (LN) thin-film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optical applications. The strict phase-matching condition should be satisfied for an efficient nonlinear optical process, which requires dispersion engineering with an LN microresonator. However, this is challenging in single microresonator, resulting from the fabrication error. Here, we demonstrate strong nonlinear effects in a photonic molecule (PM) structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks. The size mismatch of the microdisks enables phase matching by employing coupling-induced frequency splitting to compensate for the material and geometric dispersion. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical phenomena including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic signal. Meanwhile, an ultra-high four-wave mixing absolute conversion efficiency of 14% as obtained when the second harmonic signal power is at microwatts level. The LN PM is of great potential for applications in nonlinear integrated photonics.

Abstract:Low-loss, broadband, and low phase deviation optical 90 degrees hybrids based on 2 x 4 multimode interference couplers are firstly demonstrated using Si3N4 on SiO2 technology. Only a simple traditional design method of MMI based on self-imaging theory and a single-stripe Si3N4 waveguide geometry with only one step etching process are utilized. The characterization of the fabricated devices is carried out over a wide spectral window of 1520-1610 nm, showing that the measured phase error is less than 8 degrees, and common-mode rejection ratios (CMRRs) are better than -20 dB. The measured total loss of the fabricated device including a 90 degrees hybrid and a 3-dB coupler is <1 dB in a bandwidth over 80 nm. Our analysis also shows large fabrication tolerance with width of +/- 0.1 mu m or length of +/- 3 mu m.

Abstract:High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact optical 90° hybrid with the smallest length of 107μm, consisting of a wedge-shaped 2 × 4 MMI coupler connected with a 2 × 2 MMI coupler using silicon nanowaveguide technology. Neither cascaded phase shifters nor waveguide crossings are attached to the proposed 90° hybrid in coherent receiving system. The proposed device is demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) with 220nm thick top-silicon layer and 2μm thick buried oxide layer. A high performance of the proposed 90° hybrid is exhibited experimentally with a high extinction ratio larger than 20dB, an excess loss mostly less than 0.5dB, a common mode rejection ratio better than -20dB and phase deviation within the range of 5° over C-band spectral range.

Abstract:Lithium niobate on insulator platform, with excellent light confinement and second order nonlinearity, has recently attracted great interest for applications towards next-generation wavelength conversion systems that are highly efficient and can be densely fabricated. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrated efficient quasi-phase matched second harmonic generation in periodically-grooved lithium niobate waveguides with sub-micron dimensions. We show that, an additional momentum kick induced by periodically modulating the waveguide width could be used to compensate for the phase mismatch between the two fundamental modes at pump and second harmonic wavelengths. We measure normalized conversion efficiencies as high as 7.0% W(-1)cm(-2) from the fabricated devices. This system is promising for future on-chip quantum wavelength conversion.

Abstract:We demonstrate hybrid amorphous silicon uniform grating couplers for efficient coupling between the standard single-mode fiber and sub-micron lithium niobate waveguides. The grating couplers exhibit coupling efficiency of -3.06 dB and 1-dB bandwidth of 55 nm. The amorphous silicon grating couplers can also provide a universal building block applicable to other photonic platforms such as silicon nitride waveguides, whose moderate refractive index values prevent high efficiency grating couplers to be fabricated in the native waveguide. Abstract:Thin-film lithium niobate is a promising material platform for integrated nonlinear photonics, due to its high refractive index contrast with the excellent optical properties. However, the high refractive index contrast and correspondingly small mode field diameter limit the attainable coupling between the waveguide and fiber. In second harmonic generation processes, lack of efficient fiber-chip coupling schemes covering both the fundamental and second harmonic wavelengths has greatly limited the overall efficiency. We design and fabricate an ultra-broadband tri-layer edge coupler with a high coupling efficiency. The coupler allows efficient coupling of 1 dB / facet at 1550 nm and 3 dB / facet at 775 nm. This enables us to achieve an ultrahigh overall second harmonic generation normalized efficiency (fiber-to-fiber) of 1027 % W − 1 cm − 2 (on-chip second harmonic efficiency ∼3256 % W − 1 cm − 2) in a 5-mm-long periodically-poled lithium niobate waveguide, which is two to three orders of magnitude higher than that in state-of-the-art devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate a low-loss, high-efficiency lithium niobate electro-optic (EO) modulator with optical isolation trenches to achieve stronger field confinement and reduced light absorption loss. The proposed modulator realized considerable improvements, including a low half-wave voltage-length product of 1.2 V center dot cm, an excess loss of similar to 2.4 dB, and a broad 3-dB EO bandwidth of over 40 GHz. We developed a lithium niobate modulator with, to the best of our knowledge, the highest reported modulation efficiency of any Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) modulator. (c) 2023

Abstract:An optical 90 degrees hybrids based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) 4x4 MMI couplers have been fabricated in 340nm top silicon using E-Beam technology. Below 2.2 degrees phase deviation of the hybrids for the across C-band of TE mode have been simulated, which is well satisfied with the typical systems requirements. The measured optical transmission powers from port to port show that the devices function well as a 6dB power divider with excess loss around 1dB at wavelength lambda=1550nm for TE mode. The measured transmission spectra of the 4x4 MMI coupler are seriously affected by the FP resonance noise, which bring in error in phase deviation testing.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) integrated waveguides with strong local field enhancement and relatively low loss have shown their potential in nonlinear optical applications. We present a novel highly nonlinear silicon hybrid waveguide by setting an insulator-metal-insulator structure with [2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-3-([4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl)buta-1,3-diene-1,1,4,4-tetracarbonitrile] (DDMEBT) and silver materials into the silicon slot. The mode field is strongly confined in the DDMEBT layers via the surface plasmon polariton effect. Two rectangular silicon nanobridges are used to further confine the optical field and reduce the loss simultaneously. The waveguide dimensions are optimized to obtain a figure of merit as high as 0.55 at 2.1 mu m and a zero-dispersion wavelength of 2.06 mu m. In a 6.6-mm-long waveguide, a maximum four-wave mixing efficiency of -6.65 dB and a bandwidth of 512 nm (1.894-2.406 mu m) can be simultaneously obtained, pumped by a 2.104-mu m source with a power of only 500 mW. Our designed waveguide exhibits excellent overall performance for nonlinear optical applications such as all-optical signal processing in the MIR band. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Due to the significant difference in spot size between lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) waveguide and fiber, there is a substantial coupling loss between them, which limits the interconnection and application of LN photonic chips. Although some LNOI edge couplers have been designed and fabricated with low coupling loss between chip and fiber, they require high etching accuracy. In this paper, a low-loss, broadband and easily fabricated edge coupler is designed and fabricated on the LNOI platform. To reduce the etching requirement for tip width, a design has been adopted with symmetrical double tips at the edge. Additionally, a multimode interferometer (MMI) is introduced to ensure large fabrication tolerance. The proposed design only requires a single full etching step, significantly reducing stringent requirements for process with high precise. Experimental results demonstrate that the device exhibits a coupling loss less than 3.5 dB/facet in the wavelength range of 1500 to 1640 nm, while achieving a low coupling loss of 2.71dB /facet at 1550 nm.

Abstract:Recently, lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) modulators have emerged as a promising device in the field of optical communications due to its excellent material properties. However, the lack of an effective optical interface between the LNOI waveguide and the optical fiber makes it difficult to further improve the practicality of LNOI devices. Here, we proposed a high performance LNOI modulator with low loss edge coupler. The edge coupler consists of LN bilayer taper and silica-based PLC. The simulation results show a low coupling loss of 0.11dB/facet, low half-wave voltage product of 2.5 V•cm and a large 3-dB EO bandwidth more than 100 GHz. These results open a path for lithium niobate photonic integration circuit (PIC) and low-cost optical packaging.
