Abstract:Stable laser emission with ultra-narrow linewidth plays an important role in making fundamental scientific breakthroughs. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new technique for the generation of an ultra-narrow linewidth and highly stable laser based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in combination with a frequency-shifted optical injection locking mechanism. The laser performance is characterized via a delayed self-heterodyne interference system, where the white frequency noise floor is ∼20 mHz2/Hz, corresponding to a fundamental linewidth of about 63 mHz. The maximum deviation in the output power is less than 1.5% over more than 10 min. The operation of the laser can be stabilized without the need for active optoelectronic feedback. The scheme presented in this work enables narrow linewidth and stable single-frequency fiber lasers in a robust and efficient way, which has shown promising potential for many applications.

Abstract:An ultra-narrow linewidth laser based on stimulated Brillouin scattering is proposed and fabricated. The temperature control program is used to ensure the change of the output wavelength of the semiconductor laser. The erbium-doped fiber is used as the external cavity, and its linewidth can reach the order of Hz. Meanwhile, we package it into a stable module.

Abstract:Ultralow-noise microwaves are essential in a wide variety of scientific and technological applications, such as metrology, radars, and communications. Here, we propose and demonstrate a scheme for generating an ultralow-noise microwave signal using a Brillouin optical frequency comb (OFC), which is based on the stimulated Brillouin scattering in combination with a frequency-shifted optical injection locking mechanism. The generated two intra-cavity Brillouin lasers are used as the intra-cavity pump for the eventual formation of the OFC and thus the microwave signal via the cascaded four-wave mixing process. Exploiting the cascaded narrowing effect in the Brillouin cavity assisted by the frequency-shifted optical injection locking, the proposed microwave signal source exhibits ultralow phase noise. Experimental results show that the phase noise of the microwave signal is equivalent to below −115 dBc/Hz for a 200-GHz carrier at 10 kHz offset. The system can work in stable operation without the need for any active feedback loop.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate a wide-spectrum multi-wavelength fiber laser generated by Brillouin-comb assisted four-wave mixing (FWM). The mechanism of the laser is based on the combination of stimulated Brillouin scattering in cavity and multiple FWM process outside cavity. The experiment results demonstrate that Brillouin-comb assisting is an effective method to improve the FWM process and increase the line number. More than 110 lines are achieved in 10 nm spectral range with the wavelength spacing of similar to 0.09 nm. The multi-wavelength fiber laser exhibits good stability on both the operating wavelengths and output power. The tunability of this multi-wavelength fiber laser is improved significantly by inserting a tunable filter in the cavity. The total line number is kept more than 110 in the whole tunable range of 30 nm from 1540 to 1570 nm.

Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a high-Q resonator is capable for narrow-linewidth laser generation for various applications but is limited by on-resonance pump to SBS matching from single-longitudinal lasing. In this Letter, we present a narrow linewidth laser via SBS that is enhanced in a monolithic high-Q fiber resonator. The unique cross-polarization pump scheme based on fiber birefringence prevents high-order SBS and ensures single-frequency Brillouin lasing with high intracavity conversion efficiency. Fundamental linewidth of 50 Hz is achieved. Moreover, our scheme also allows precise characterization of Brillouin frequency shift and gain bandwidth of some nonlinear materials.

Abstract:A highly coherent optical frequency comb (OFC) based on spectral broadening of a phase-locked dual-wavelength microcavity laser is presented. By directly modulating the microcavity laser to generate multiple sidebands, the cross-injection locking of the dual modes is achieved and the beat-signal linewidth is improved from 13.5 MHz to less than 100 Hz. Subsequently, 21 flat comb teeth in a ±3 dB power variation are achieved by combining a phase modulator. Finally, an OFC with a bandwidth of 16 nm is successfully realized by narrowing the optical pulse and spectral broadening in a commercial nonlinear optical fiber. The repetition rate has a low phase noise of -102 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset, demonstrating the generated OFC has a high degree of coherence.

Abstract:Microcavity-based microlasers are the kernel light sources for integrating photonics and optoelectronics. The traditional pump light frequency locking mainly utilizes a complex system with optoelectronic feedback, which requires a high-cost narrow-linewidth pump laser and limits the application of microlasers in integrated optoelectronic systems. We propose to utilize Rayleigh scattering of microcavities to lock the frequency of the pump laser to the resonant frequency of the laser microcavity with an all-optical method. While compressing the linewidth of the pump laser, it can greatly improve the long-term stability of the optically pumped microcavity laser. In the experiment, the linewidth of the semiconductor pump laser is compressed from the MHz level to the kHz level. The microcavity Brillouin laser achieves an ultra-narrow intrinsic linewidth of 100 Hz, with an ultra-low frequency noise of 35 Hz2/Hz. The constructed microlaser obtains a locking time up to 1 hour, which does not require any temperature control or vibration isolation of the laser system. This work is the first demonstration to achieve an optically pump-locked microcavity Brillouin laser, which provides a stable and reliable low-cost experimental platform for ultra-narrow linewidth lasers, precision laser sensors, microwave-photonic signal synthesizer, and optomechanical systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate a multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (BEFL) with narrow linewidth and tunable wavelength interval using dual-wavelength Brillouin pumping. The generation of multi-wavelength output in BEFL is based on the combination of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a fiber cavity. The tunable wavelength interval is determined by the artificially controlled wavelength interval of the pumping lasers. The BEFL could compress a 1 MHz pump laser to a 340 Hz Brillouin Stokes laser, which proves the BEFL has excellent capability of linewidth compression. An erbium-doped fiber pumped by 980 nm laser is inserted into the cavity to further amplify the Brillouin laser. The wideband multi-wavelength BEFL covering over 50 nm is successfully generated when the 980 nm pump power is 400 mW. These features of multi-wavelength BEFL provide an effective method for optical communication systems and optical fiber sensing.

Abstract:Narrow-linewidth lasers are in extensive demand for numerous cutting-edge applications. Such lasers operating at the visible range are of particular interest. Self-injection locking of a laser diode frequency to a high-Q whispering gallery mode is an effective and universal way to achieve superior laser performance. We demonstrate ultranarrow lasing with less than 10 Hz instantaneous linewidth for 20 s averaging time at 638 nm using a Fabry–Pérot laser diode locked to a crystalline MgF microresonator. The linewidth measured with a -separation line technique that characterizes 10 ms stability is as low as 1.4 kHz. Output power exceeds 80 mW. Demonstrated results are among the best for visible-range lasers in terms of linewidth combined with solid output power. We additionally report the first demonstration of a gain-switched regime for such stabilized Fabry–Pérot laser diode showing a high-contrast visible frequency comb generation. Tunable linespacing from 10 MHz to 3.8 GHz is observed. We demonstrated that the beatnote between the lines has sub-Hz linewidth and experiences spectral purification in the self-injection locking regime. This result might be of special importance for spectroscopy in the visible range.

Abstract:Free-space Brillouin lasers (BLs) generate high-power narrow-linewidth laser outputs at specific wavelengths. However, despite these impressive results, further compressing the Stokes linewidth while maintaining a high-power output remains a challenge. This study was conducted to investigate the design of BLs, starting from the phase-matching conditions and stability of a Brillouin cavity, for media with different phonon frequencies. A high-power and narrow-linewidth output can be realized using large-size, wide-gain-bandwidth Brillouin media. We experimentally demonstrated a BL using fused silica and diamond with the same cavity parameters. Stokes powers of 21.6 and 18.9 W were obtained with fused silica and diamond, respectively, at an available pump power of 58 W. Using fused silica, a Stokes linewidth of 1.2 kHz was obtained, which is two times narrower than that obtained using the diamond BL. Such BL design routes for various Brillouin media provide a path for achieving high-power, ultra-narrow-linewidth laser radiation at specific wavelengths.

Abstract:Ultralow-noise yet tunable lasers are a revolutionary tool in precision spectroscopy, displacement measurements at the standard quantum limit, and the development of advanced optical atomic clocks. Further applications include lidar, coherent communications, frequency synthesis, and precision sensors of strain, motion, and temperature. While all applications benefit from lower frequency noise, many also require a laser that is robust and compact. Here, we introduce a dual-microcavity laser that leverages one chip-integrable silica microresonator to generate tunable 1550 nm laser light via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and a second microresonator for frequency stabilization of the SBS light. This configuration reduces the fractional frequency noise to 7.8×10−14 1/√Hz at 10 Hz offset, which is a new regime of noise performance for a microresonator-based laser. Our system also features terahertz tunability and the potential for chip-level integration. We demonstrate the utility of our dual-microcavity laser by performing spectral linewidth measurements with hertz-level resolution.

Abstract:Spectrally pure lasers, the heart of precision high-end scientific and commercial applications, are poised to make the leap from the laboratory to integrated circuits. Translating this performance to integrated photonics will dramatically reduce cost and footprint for applications such as ultrahigh capacity fibre and data centre networks, atomic clocks and sensing. Despite the numerous applications, integrated lasers currently suffer from large linewidth. Brillouin lasers, with their unique properties, offer an intriguing solution, yet bringing their performance to integrated platforms has remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate a sub-hertz (~0.7 Hz) fundamental linewidth Brillouin laser in an integrated Si3N4 waveguide platform that translates advantages of non-integrated designs to the chip scale. This silicon-foundry-compatible design supports low loss from 405 to 2,350 nm and can be integrated with other components. Single- and multiple-frequency output operation provides a versatile low phase-noise solution. We highlight this by demonstrating an optical gyroscope and a low-phase-noise photonic oscillator.

Abstract:Brillouin fiber laser with the non-resonance pumping configuration, has compact set-up, good wavelength tunability and high-power single-frequency-emission capability, being regarded as an important technique for highly-coherent light generation. Such Brillouin fiber lasers, using single-mode fiber (SMF) as the Brillouin gain medium, generally have high lasing thresholds and mode-hopping instabilities, resulting from the relatively-low Brillouin gain coefficient of the conventional SMF. Here, we report a compact, non-resonance-pumping Brillouin photonic crystal fiber laser that can generate kHz-level-linewidth single-frequency lasing with tens-of-mW lasing threshold. Mode-hopping instability of this laser is largely suppressed thanks to the short (∼20 m) cavity length, which gives rise to a free-spectral-range (FSR) value of ∼10 MHz properly matching the tens-of-MHz Brillouin gain bandwidth. Experimental results of both self-heterodyne and frequency-noise measurements indicate a laser linewidth of ∼1.4 kHz, corresponding to high linewidth-narrowing ratio of ∼18. No lasing line of high-order Stokes was observed in experiments as the laser pump power was gradually increased to ∼200 mW, giving a nearly-linear lasing slope.

Abstract:By generating a Brillouin laser in an optical microresonator, we realize a soliton Kerr microcomb through exciting the Kerr frequency comb using the generated Brillouin laser in the same cavity. The intracavity Brillouin laser pumping scheme enables us to access the soliton states with a blue-detuned input pump. Due to the ultra-narrow linewidth and the low-noise properties of the generated Brillouin laser, the observed soliton microcomb exhibits narrow-linewidth comb lines and stable repetition rate even by using a diode laser with relatively broad linewidth. Also, we demonstrate a low-noise microwave signal with phase noise levels of -24 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz, -111 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz, and -147 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offsets for a 11.14 GHz carrier with only a free-running input pump. The easy operation of the Brillouin-Kerr soliton microcomb with excellent performance makes our scheme promising for practical applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a fiber laser with tunable linewidth based on self-injection locking (SIL) and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect. The linewidth-tuning operation is achieved by limiting injection power within the third regime of the feedback effect. SBS can realize single longitudinal mode (SLM) by the ultra-narrow gain range, and generate ultra-narrow laser linewidth because of the high Q value. Additionally, we use Brillouin erbium fiber laser (BEFL) to replace the ordinary Brillouin ring cavity to obtain better SLM property. The lasing with ultra-narrow linewidth is steadily emitted after eliminating the mod-hopping caused by SIL and confirming the stable occurrence of SBS. In addition, The Lorentzian linewidth of DFB (1.7 kHz) and SIL with different injection power are measured by the delayed self-heterodyne interferometry (50 km delay fiber). The Lorentzian linewidth of the BEFL (60 Hz) is accurately measured by the Voigt fitting.
