Abstract:As precision optical spectroscopy is transitioning to real world applications, Hz-level cw reference lasers operable outside of research labs are becoming vital. However, the need for bulk cavity references to reach such a stability level is still a major limitation hampering progress. Here we demonstrate a major advance to overcome this obstacle by introducing ultra-low noise, long length, fiber Brillouin lasers with self-referenced temperature sensing to potentially achieve Hz level frequency stability in a compact form factor.

Abstract:Brillouin fiber laser with the non-resonance pumping configuration, has compact set-up, good wavelength tunability and high-power single-frequency-emission capability, being regarded as an important technique for highly-coherent light generation. Such Brillouin fiber lasers, using single-mode fiber (SMF) as the Brillouin gain medium, generally have high lasing thresholds and mode-hopping instabilities, resulting from the relatively-low Brillouin gain coefficient of the conventional SMF. Here, we report a compact, non-resonance-pumping Brillouin photonic crystal fiber laser that can generate kHz-level-linewidth single-frequency lasing with tens-of-mW lasing threshold. Mode-hopping instability of this laser is largely suppressed thanks to the short (∼20 m) cavity length, which gives rise to a free-spectral-range (FSR) value of ∼10 MHz properly matching the tens-of-MHz Brillouin gain bandwidth. Experimental results of both self-heterodyne and frequency-noise measurements indicate a laser linewidth of ∼1.4 kHz, corresponding to high linewidth-narrowing ratio of ∼18. No lasing line of high-order Stokes was observed in experiments as the laser pump power was gradually increased to ∼200 mW, giving a nearly-linear lasing slope.

Abstract:Ultralow-noise yet tunable lasers are a revolutionary tool in precision spectroscopy, displacement measurements at the standard quantum limit, and the development of advanced optical atomic clocks. Further applications include lidar, coherent communications, frequency synthesis, and precision sensors of strain, motion, and temperature. While all applications benefit from lower frequency noise, many also require a laser that is robust and compact. Here, we introduce a dual-microcavity laser that leverages one chip-integrable silica microresonator to generate tunable 1550 nm laser light via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and a second microresonator for frequency stabilization of the SBS light. This configuration reduces the fractional frequency noise to 7.8×10−14 1/√Hz at 10 Hz offset, which is a new regime of noise performance for a microresonator-based laser. Our system also features terahertz tunability and the potential for chip-level integration. We demonstrate the utility of our dual-microcavity laser by performing spectral linewidth measurements with hertz-level resolution.

Abstract:Spectrally pure lasers, the heart of precision high-end scientific and commercial applications, are poised to make the leap from the laboratory to integrated circuits. Translating this performance to integrated photonics will dramatically reduce cost and footprint for applications such as ultrahigh capacity fibre and data centre networks, atomic clocks and sensing. Despite the numerous applications, integrated lasers currently suffer from large linewidth. Brillouin lasers, with their unique properties, offer an intriguing solution, yet bringing their performance to integrated platforms has remained elusive. Here, we demonstrate a sub-hertz (~0.7 Hz) fundamental linewidth Brillouin laser in an integrated Si3N4 waveguide platform that translates advantages of non-integrated designs to the chip scale. This silicon-foundry-compatible design supports low loss from 405 to 2,350 nm and can be integrated with other components. Single- and multiple-frequency output operation provides a versatile low phase-noise solution. We highlight this by demonstrating an optical gyroscope and a low-phase-noise photonic oscillator.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a stabilized single-frequency Brillouin fiber laser operating at 1.06 µm by means of a passive highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) ring cavity combined with a phase-locking loop scheme. The stimulated Brillouin scattering efficiency is first investigated in distinct single-mode germanosilicate core fibers with increasing G e O 2 content. The most suitable fiber, namely, 21 mol.% G e O 2 core fiber, is used as the Brillouin gain medium in the laser cavity made with a 15-m-long segment. A Stokes lasing threshold of 140 mW is reported. We also show significant linewidth narrowing (below 1 kHz) as well as frequency noise reduction compared to that of the initial pump in our mode-hop free Brillouin fiber laser.

Abstract:Stable laser emission with ultra-narrow linewidth plays an important role in making fundamental scientific breakthroughs. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new technique for the generation of an ultra-narrow linewidth and highly stable laser based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in combination with a frequency-shifted optical injection locking mechanism. The laser performance is characterized via a delayed self-heterodyne interference system, where the white frequency noise floor is ∼20 mHz2/Hz, corresponding to a fundamental linewidth of about 63 mHz. The maximum deviation in the output power is less than 1.5% over more than 10 min. The operation of the laser can be stabilized without the need for active optoelectronic feedback. The scheme presented in this work enables narrow linewidth and stable single-frequency fiber lasers in a robust and efficient way, which has shown promising potential for many applications.

Abstract:In this letter, a narrow line-width ytterbium-doped fiber ring laser with a fiber Bragg grating inside the cavity is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In order to realize single longitudinal mode (SLM) output, an un-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber is used as an SLM selector. First, the effect of the coupler output ratio on the output power and the threshold power is discussed in this proposed laser, and the coupler output ratio of 30% is adopted at last. Furthermore, the spectrum and frequency spectra are analyzed to obtain the line width and frequency stability. Finally, the output power with fluctuation in half an hour is measured to evaluate the power stability. The results show that the output power of 7 mW, signal-to-noise ratio greater than 65 dB at 1069 nm, line width less than 500 Hz, and power stability below 1.5% can be achieved for the laser.

Abstract:A novel and simple two-frequency Brillouin fiber laser is presented. It is based on a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity with fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors. The model of stimulated Brillouin scattering in fiber grating-based Fabry-Perot resonator is investigated. The laser allows conversion efficiency of close to 100% and suppresses the higher-order Stokes waves. The theoretical prediction is presented and the experimental demonstration is realized.

Abstract:We demonstrate a narrow-linewidth high-order-mode (HOM) Brillouin random fiber laser (BRFL) based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) and distributed Rayleigh random feedback in a half-open linear cavity. The single-mode operation of the laser radiation with sub-kilohertz linewidth is achieved thanks to distributed Brillouin amplification and Rayleigh scattering along kilometer-long single mode fibers whilst a few mode fiber-based LPFGs enable the transverse mode conversion among a broadband wavelength range. Meanwhile, a dynamic fiber grating (DFG) is embedded and incorporated to manipulate and purify the random modes, which hence suppresses the frequency drift resulting from random mode hopping. Consequently, the random laser emission with either high-order scalar or vector modes can be generated with a high laser efficiency of 25.5% and an ultra-narrow 3-dB linewidth of 230 Hz. Furthermore, the dependence of the laser efficiency and frequency stability on the gain fiber length are also experimentally investigated. It is believed that our approach could provide a promising platform for a wide range of applications such as coherent optical communication, high-resolution imaging, highly sensitive sensing, etc.

Abstract:We present a compact integrated fiber laser with more than 200 mW of output power. It combines polarized fiber output with very narrow linewidth of less than 2 kHz. The coherence length of the laser is measured to be longer than 5 km. The laser features high mode stability of less than ${\pm}{\rm 10}~{\rm MHz}$ over hours. The relative intensity noise (RIN) spectrum is dominated by a peak at the relaxation oscillation frequency and is shot-noise limited otherwise. The RIN peak at 1 MHz is reduced to $\sim{-}{\rm 130}~{\rm dB/Hz}$ by integrating a negative feedback circuit. In addition to thermal wavelength tuning, the laser frequency can be modulated at a bandwidth of up to 10 kHz via the piezoelectric effect.

Abstract:A stabilized coherent narrow-linewidth Brillouin random fiber laser with low lasing noise is proposed and investigated experimentally, which employs stimulated Brillouin scattering and Rayleigh scattering in optical fibers to provide the gain and the random distributed feedback, respectively. The stabilized lasing output with suppressed noise is realized utilizing a simple structure of a double-coupler fiber ring resonator, which is composed of a section of single-mode fiber and two optical couplers with different coupling ratios. Compared with the existing free-running Brillouin random fiber lasers, much more stabilized laser output can be obtained as the double-coupler fiber ring resonator effectively acts as a narrow-bandwidth mode filter through the Vernier effect that constrains the dense random longitudinal modes competition within a small frequency range. In the experiment, a stable ultra-narrow linewidth of approximately 586.4 Hz is obtained from the laser output. Statistical analysis of mode hopping in the proposed laser indicates a great improvement in multi-mode resonances and frequency jitters with the imbedding of the ring resonator. In addition, measurement results of relative intensity noise and frequency noise of the proposed laser showcase a great suppression in mode-competition-induced lasing instability and a significant improvement in the noise level compared to the free-running Brillouin random fiber lasers. The proposed all-fiber-based stabilization technique makes a step forward for developing practically robust and reliable Brillouin random fiber lasers. Such a stabilized highly coherent narrow-linewidth laser source with low cost and low power consumption will find promising applications in high-resolution spectrometers, microwave photonics, and optical sensing.

Abstract:We proposed a short-linear-cavity fiber laser with a virtual-folded-ring configuration, which combines the advantages of ring lasers and short-linear-cavity lasers. An all-fiber quarter-wave plate was used inside the cavity to introduce polarization retardation. By retarding the polarization of the travelling waves, the spatial-hole-burning effect was weakened and the efficient cavity length was extended to nearly twice its physical length. As a result, a single-frequency laser output with a linewidth of less than 820 Hz was obtained from the free-running fiber laser. The relaxation oscillation frequency was observed to be around 280 kHz and the signal to noise ratio of the laser output was >72 dB.

Abstract:Laser stabilization sits at the heart of many precision scientific experiments and applications, including quantum information science, metrology and atomic timekeeping. These systems narrow the laser linewidth and stabilize the carrier by use of Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) locking to a table-scale, ultra-high quality factor (Q), vacuum spaced Fabry-Perot reference cavity. Integrating these cavities, to bring characteristics of PDH stabilization to the chip-scale, is critical to reduce their size, cost, and weight, and enable a wide range of portable and system-on-chip applications. We report a significant advance in integrated laser linewidth narrowing, stabilization and noise reduction, by use of a photonic integrated 4.0-meter-long coil resonator to stabilize a semiconductor laser. We achieve a 36 Hz 1/{\pi}-integral linewidth, an Allan deviation (ADEV) of 1.8x10^{-13} at 10 ms measurement time, and a 2.3 kHz/sec drift, to the best of our knowledge the lowest integral linewidth and highest stability demonstrated for an integrated reference cavity. Two coil designs, stabilizing lasers operating at 1550 nm and 1319 nm are demonstrated. The resonator is bus coupled to a 4.0-meter-long coil, with a 49 MHz free spectral range (FSR), a mode volume of 1.0x10^{10} {\mu}m^3 and a 142 million intrinsic Q, fabricated in a CMOS compatible, ultra-low loss silicon nitride waveguide platform. Our measurements and simulations show that the thermorefractive noise floor for this particular cavity is reached for frequencies down to 20 Hz in an ambient environment with simple passive vibration isolation and without vacuum or thermal isolation. The TRN limited performance is estimated to be an 8 Hz 1/{\pi} integral linewidth and ADEV of 5x10^{-14} at 10 ms, opening a stability regime that heretofore has only been available in fundamentally un-integrated systems.

Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a high-Q resonator is capable for narrow-linewidth laser generation for various applications but is limited by on-resonance pump to SBS matching from single-longitudinal lasing. In this Letter, we present a narrow linewidth laser via SBS that is enhanced in a monolithic high-Q fiber resonator. The unique cross-polarization pump scheme based on fiber birefringence prevents high-order SBS and ensures single-frequency Brillouin lasing with high intracavity conversion efficiency. Fundamental linewidth of 50 Hz is achieved. Moreover, our scheme also allows precise characterization of Brillouin frequency shift and gain bandwidth of some nonlinear materials.

Abstract:The rapid advancement of lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) photonics has spurred interest in approaches to develop ultra-narrow linewidth Brillouin microlasers. Here we demonstrate an integrated Brillouin microlaser with 118-Hz intrinsic linewidth and 3.15-mW threshold power in a dispersion engineered and suspended LNOI microdisk resonator of 116 um diameter. Benefited from the ultrahigh Q factor and sub-millimeter-scale microresonator, large Brillouin gain is attained via the backward intermodal SBS between the dual-resonant optical WGMs with a 10-GHz whispering-gallery mechanical mode, while satisfying the requirements of both energy and momentum conservations. Such strong optomechanical coupling up to 12.1 kHz is promising for a record narrow linewidth and a lowest stimulated Brillouin laser threshold value within sub-millimeter-scale integrated microresonators reported so far. This advancement in integrated ultra-narrow linewidth Brillouin lasers with compact cavity lengths paves the way for applications ranging from coherent information processing to precision metrology within the realm of high density photonic integration.

Abstract:Lasers with hertz linewidths at time scales of seconds are critical for metrology, timekeeping, and manipulation of quantum systems. Such frequency stability relies on bulk-optic lasers and reference cavities, where increased size is leveraged to reduce noise but with the trade-off of cost, hand assembly, and limited applications. Alternatively, planar waveguide-based lasers enjoy complementary metal-oxide semiconductor scalability yet are fundamentally limited from achieving hertz linewidths by stochastic noise and thermal sensitivity. In this work, we demonstrate a laser system with a 1-s linewidth of 1.1 Hz and fractional frequency instability below 10(-14) to 1 s. This low-noise performance leverages integrated lasers together with an 8-ml vacuum-gap cavity using microfabricated mirrors. All critical components are lithographically defined on planar substrates, holding potential for high-volume manufacturing. Consequently, this work provides an important advance toward compact lasers with hertz linewidths for portable optical clocks, radio frequency photonic oscillators, and related communication and navigation systems.
