Abstract:In this study, an all-fiber ultra-flat supercontinuum (SC) laser source based on a 0.9 m long highly germania-core fiber (GCF) was presented. A flat SC laser with range of 1.9 µm to 2.7 µm was used as the pump source. A broadband SC laser source extending from 1.85 to 3.57 μm with an output power of 1.9 W was obtained, which achieved a spectral bandwidth of 1240 nm from 1990 to 3230 nm at 3 dB and a spectral bandwidth of 1410 nm from 1930 to 3340 nm at 10 dB, respectively. Moreover, the effects of different seed pulse parameters on SC spectral scope and output power were studied. To the best of our knowledge, the 3 dB and 10 dB bandwidths of this SC spectrum have been the widest levels ever reported for mid-infrared (MIR) region GCF-based SC laser.

Abstract:Supercontinuum generation (SCG) using a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser as a pump source and a nanofiber as a nonlinear element is investigated by numerical modeling. Many parameters are taken into account involving input pulse duration, peak power and diameter of the nanofiber. The results show that the narrower the input pulse is, the easier the SCG could be observed. The relation between the spectrum broadening and the diameter of nanofiber is not a direct proportion. According to our simulation, the dimension of the nanofiber plays an important role in effecting the dispersion and then the generation of supercontinuum.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber SC laser source based on a 0.9 m-long 94 mol.% GCF which was pumped by a single-mode (SM) TDFA-based 1.9 similar to 2.7 mu m laser source. A 2.59 W flat SC spectrum with coverage of 1.9 similar to 3.5 mu m were achieved under a seed pulse repetition rate of 600 kHz and a pulse duration of 1 ns. The 3 dB bandwidth was 1210 nm ranging from 1970 to 3180 nm and the 10 dB bandwidth was 1380 nm ranging from 1920 to 3300 nm.

Abstract:An all-fiber supercontinuum (SC) source with record average output power of 714 W and spectrum ranging from 690 nm to 2350 nm is demonstrated. The method of SC generation from an ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier is used to achieve the high-power SC output. The source also exhibits a flat spectrum ranging from 1050 nm to 2095 nm at the −10 dB level. The parameters that influence the output power and spectrum of SC, including the pulse width of the seed laser and the passive fiber length in the last stage fiber amplifier, are analyzed in detail. To the best of our knowledge, the output power of SC in this work is the highest power that has been publicly reported. The scheme has the advantage of good robustness, which also has the potential to further increase the SC output power to the kilowatt level.

Abstract:High power all fiber mid-IR supercontinuum (SC) generation in a ZBLAN fiber pumped by a 2 μm master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system is demonstrated. A semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) passively mode-locked laser with pulse width of 26 ps at 1960 nm is used as the seed of the MOPA system. A laser spectrum extending from ~1.9 μm to beyond 2.6 μm is generated in a subsequent thulium-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA). Then, the spectrum is further broadened to the mid-IR region in the ZBLAN fiber. A mid-IR SC extending from 1.9 to 3.9 μm with 7.11 W average output power is obtained based on a large mode area TDFA, the SC power for wavelengths longer than 2.5 μm is 3.52 W with a power ratio of 49.5% with respect to the total SC power. The overall optical conversion efficiency from the 790 nm pump of the large mode area TDFA to the total SC output is 10.4%. To the best of our knowledge, both the 7.11 W total average power and 3.52 W average power in wavelengths beyond 2.5 μm are the highest power ever reported for a mid-IR SC generation in ZBLAN fiber pumped by 2 μm fiber lasers and TDFAs.

Abstract:We demonstrated numerically the generation of broadband, coherent supercontinuum (SC) spectra in the mid-infrared region using dispersion-engineered all-chalcogenide microstructured fibers (MOFs). The 1-cm-long hexagonal fiber can be made with Ge11.5As24S64.5 glass as a low-refractive-index material embedded in a Ge11.5As24Se64.5 glass matrix. By optimizing the structural parameters, we determined a broad and flat all-normal-dispersion characteristic up to 14 μm. A highly coherent broadband SC with an intensity greater than −3 dB in the range from 5973 to 8695 nm is obtained when the fiber is pumped by a 7 μm laser with pulse duration of 50 fs and peak power of 6 kW. Flat-top SC of −30 dB level can be observed utilizing identical pump pulse parameters, covering wavelengths from 3823 to 13577 nm (>1.5 octaves). This broadband coherent MIR SC source can be applied in frequency metrology, optical coherence tomography, biomedical imaging, and few-cycle pulse compression.

Abstract:We report a near two-octave spanning supercontinuum (SC) from 790 nm to 2900 nm in a nanostructured tellurite graded-index multimode fiber with a nanostructured core. We study the SC dynamics in different dispersion regimes and observe near-single mode spatial intensity distribution at high input energy values. Numerical simulations of the (3+1)D generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation are in good agreement with our experiments. Our results open a new avenue for the generation of high-power mid-infrared SC sources in soft glass fibers.

Abstract:In this paper, we design a silica-cladded Germania-doped ring-core fiber (RCF) that supports orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. By optimizing the fiber structure parameters, the RCF possesses a near-zero flat dispersion with a total variation of <+/- 30 ps/nm/km over 1770 nm bandwidth from 1040 to 2810 nm for the OAM(1,1) mode. A beyond-two-octave supercontinuum spectrum of the OAM(1,1) mode is generated numerically by launching a 40 fs 120 kW pulse train centered at 1400 nm into a 12 cm long designed 50 mol% Ge-doped fiber, which covers 2130 nm bandwidth from 630 nm to 2760 nm at -40 dB of power level. This design can serve as an efficient way to extend the spectral coverage of beams carrying OAM modes for various applications.

Abstract:We demonstrated a broadband mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum (SC) directly generated in telecommunication multimode fiber (MMF) pumped by 2.054 mu m nanosecond laser pulses. The characteristics of mid-IR SC, including the output spectrum, pulse energy, and optic-tooptic conversion efficiency, were exhaustively investigated at different pump powers and fiber lengths. The nonlinear processes for SC generation in fiber were analyzed, and the frequency shift of the modulation instability (MI) was theoretically calculated, which was close to the experimental data. The output SC pulse shapes were measured in different output powers, and no split was found. The SC laser beam was nearly diffraction limited with an M-2 = 1.15 in 2.1 mu m measured by the traveling knife-edge method, and the laser beam spot was monitored by an infrared vidicon camera.
High Power All-Fiber Supercontinuum System Based on Graded-Index Multimode Fibers

Abstract:An all-fiber supercontinuum source based on graded-index multimode fibers is reported. The supercontinuum source is based on a homemade mode-locked oscillator and a three-stage picosecond amplifier, which obtained the supercontinuum by a graded-index multimode fiber. The laser output with a spectral range of 480-2440 nm, an average power of 25 W, and a repetition frequency of 8.27 MHz is obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average power for generating a supercontinuum with an all-fiber structure based on the graded-index fiber. The effects of GRIN fiber length and different pump peak powers on the supercontinuum generation are also verified. The results showed that the graded-index multimode fiber can effectively obtain a supercontinuum with high power.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated a high-power flat mid-infrared (MIR) supercontinuum (SC) source based on a piece of UHNA7 fiber which pumped by a flat 1.9- SC source. The SC spectrum with a coverage of 1.77- and a maximal average output power of 12.01 W was obtained by optimizing seed pulse parameters and UHNA7 fiber length. The 5 dB spectral bandwidth of SC spectrum was close to ~1000 nm, spanning 1925 to 2894 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is a MIR SC source that combines high-power and flatness based on low GeO2 doped fiber to date. Furthermore, we investigated the SC power stability, corresponding to the root-mean-square (RMS) value of 0.074% in 1 hour. The set-up has an all-fiber structure and therefore offers excellent portability and stability, making it an ideal light source for fiber optic sensing and spectral imaging technology.

Abstract:High power mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum (SC) laser sources in the 3-12 µm region are of great interest for a variety of applications in many fields. Although various mid-IR SC laser sources have been proposed and investigated experimentally and theoretically in the past several years, power scaling of mid-IR SC lasers beyond 3 μm with infrared edges extending beyond 7 μm are still challenges because the wavelengths of most previously used pump sources are below 2 μm. These problems can be solved with the recent development of mode-locked fiber lasers at 3 μm. In this paper, high power mid-IR SC laser sources based on dispersion engineered tellurite and chalcogenide fibers and pumped by ultrafast lasers at 3 µm are proposed and investigated. Our simulation results show that, when a W-type tellurite fiber with a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) of 2.7 µm is pumped at 2.78 μm, the power proportion of the SC laser beyond 3 µm can exceed 40% and the attainable SC output power of the proposed solid-cladding tellurite fiber is one order of magnitude higher than that of existing microstructured tellurite fibers. Our calculation also predicts that a very promising super-broadband mid-IR SC fiber laser source covering two atmospheric windows and molecules' "fingerprint" region can be obtained with a microstructured As2Se3 chalcogenide fiber pumped at 2.78 μm.

Abstract:Supercontinuum (SC) sources covering near-infrared and midinfrared region have attracted enormous interest and found significant applications in tissue imaging, sensing, spectroscopy, defense, and environmental monitoring. Herein, an 8.45 W all-fiber ultraflat SC source with a spectral range of 1.01-4.05 mu m using a flat high-power 1.9-2.7 mu m SC fiber source to pump a piece of fluorotellurite fiber is presented. The SC spectrum exhibits a 3 dB bandwidth of 1850 nm, ranging from 1870 to 3720 nm, and a 10 dB bandwidth of 2770 nm, ranging from 1120 to 3890 nm. The measured power stability is 0.19% (root mean square) for 5 h of continuous operation, proving the excellent power stability of the system. To the best of knowledge, the SC spectrum exhibits the widest reported 3 and 10 dB bandwidths for 1-4 mu m SC sources. An ultraflat, broadband-coverage, high-power midinfrared supercontinuum laser source is proposed and thoroughly studied. The nonlinear medium is a fluorotellurite fiber with stable thermal properties, high nonlinear coefficient, and good water resistance. Abstract:We demonstrate ultra-flat and high-efficient mid-infrared supercontinuum (MIR SC) generation in indium fluoride (InF 3 ) fiber with output average power of 9.9 W, power conversion efficiency of 67.8 % and 3 dB- spectrum width of > 1570 nm. It is pumped by amplified 2 μm noise-like pulses and generated in a piece of 10 m InF 3 fiber with core diameters of 9.5 μm. The 2 μm noise-like pulses is realized by nonlinear amplifying loop mirror mode-locking technique and amplified by two-stage amplifiers with pulse repetition rate of 1.513 MHz and 3-dB pulse envelope width of 2.2 ns. To further increase efficiency, the InF 3 fiber is spliced directly to the pigtail of main amplifier with 92.47 % coupling efficiency, which is in good agreement with 92 % theoretical result of fundamental-mode coupling efficiency. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work achieves the flattest (3 dB spectral coverage of 2120 - 3690 nm) and highest efficiency (67.8%) in MIR SC seeded by 2 μm pulses.

Watt-level Supercontinuum Generation in As2Se3fibers Pumped by a 2-Micron Random Fiber Laser

Abstract:Chalcogenide fibers are good candidates for generating supercontinuum (SC) radiation due to their large nonlinear refractive indices and high mid-infrared transmission, but their low damage thresholds hamper the SC power scaling, thereby limiting the ultimately achieved SC brightness. Here, we report an As2Se3 fiber SC system pumped by a novel random Q-switched 2 mu m Tm3+ fiber laser. The maximum SC output power is 1.09 W with slope efficiency of 24%, and the SC spans from similar to 1980 to similar to 2500 nm with a spectral width of similar to 500 nm at the -20 dB points. The spectral power density is similar to 2 mW nm(-1). To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest power and spectral density SC emission ever achieved in chalcogenide fibers.

Abstract:High average power, all-fiber integrated, broadband supercontinuum (SC) sources are demonstrated. Architecture for SC generation using amplified picosecond/nanosecond laser diode (LD) pulses followed by modulation instability (MI) induced pulse breakup is presented and used to demonstrate SC sources from the mid-IR to the visible wavelengths. In addition to the simplicity in implementation, this architecture allows scaling up of the SC average power by increasing the pulse repetition rate and the corresponding pump power, while keeping the peak power, and, hence, the spectral extent approximately constant. Using this process, we demonstrate >10W in a mid-IR SC extending from ∼0.8 to 4μm, >5W in a near IR SC extending from ∼0.8 to 2.8μm, and >0.7W in a visible SC extending from ∼0.45 to 1.2μm. SC modulation capability is also demonstrated in a mid-IR SC laser with ∼3.9W in an SC extending from ∼0.8 to 4.3μm. The entire system and SC output in this case is modulated by a 500Hz square wave at 50% duty cycle without any external chopping or modulation. We also explore the use of thulium doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) stages for mid-IR SC generation. In addition to the higher pump to signal conversion efficiency demonstrated in TDFAs compared to erbium/ytterbium doped fiber amplifier (EYFA), the shifting of the SC pump from ∼1.5 to ∼2μm is pursued with an attempt to generate a longer extending SC into the mid-IR. We demonstrate ∼2.5 times higher optical conversion efficiency from pump to SC generation in wavelengths beyond 3.8μm in the TDFA versus the EYFA based SC systems. The TDFA SC spectrum extends from ∼1.9 to 4.5μm with ∼2.6W at 50% modulation with a 250 Hz square wave. A variety of applications in defense, health care and metrology are also demonstrated using the SC laser systems presented in this paper.

Abstract:We demonstrate mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum generation (SCG) with instantaneous bandwidth from 2.2 to 5 μm at 40 dB below the peak, covering the wavelength range desirable for molecular spectroscopy and numerous other applications. The SCG occurs in a tapered As(2)S(3) fiber prepared by in-situ tapering and is pumped by femtosecond pulses from the subharmonic of a mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser. Interference with a narrow linewidth c.w. laser verifies that the coherence properties of the near-IR frequency comb have been preserved through these cascaded nonlinear processes. With this approach stable broad mid-IR frequency combs can be derived from commercially available near-IR frequency combs without an extra stabilization mechanism.
