Abstract:A heterodyne Fourier transform spectroscopy is proposed in which a double-grating frequency shifter was used to provide the stable achromatic frequency shift. Compared with conventional Fourier transform spectroscopy, our method can obtain spectra with high sensitivity due to optical frequency modulation and high wavelength resolution due to there being no limit for its scanning range. A wavelength resolution of 0.16nm was achieved in the spectra measurements.

Abstract:We demonstrate two all-fiber low-frequency shift schemes based on the acousto-optic interaction in a few-mode fiber (FMF). Two acoustically induced fiber gratings (AIFGs) are cascaded in reverse to achieve an efficient cycle conversion between LP11 and LP01 core modes in the FMF while obtaining a frequency shift of 1.8 MHz. In addition, a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is employed to replace the AIFG, which achieves a lower frequency shift of 0.9 MHz, and its tunable wavelength range exceeds 100 nm. Both schemes show the characteristics of an upward frequency shift. Moreover, we also present a heterodyne detection system based on the above frequency shift schemes, which is verified in response to micro-vibration signals ranging from tens to hundreds of kilohertz, as well as speech signals in a lower frequency range. The experimental results show that these all-fiber frequency shift schemes have potential applications, such as in fiber optic hydrophones, laser speech detection, and fiber optic sensors.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the micro-vibration based on heterodyne interference has low stability and is easily impacted by environmental noise ,the ideas of optical path improve-ment were given .According to the difference principle ,the single optical path was converted to a double optical path ,in which the environmental noise was eliminated ;The elliptically po-larized light was changed into linearly polarized light to improve the interference signal ampli-tude by the polarization splitting prism (PBS);The acousto-optic modulator(AOM ) was im-proved to inhibit frequency drift ;The stray light was suppressed by using diaphragm filters so as to improve the system signal-noise ratio (SNR) .The verification experiments were conduc-ted through detecting 5 kHz piezoelectric vibration signal and 2 .5 M Hz laser ultrasonic signal . Experimental results indicate that signal is stable and has no ripple ,the resolution is 2 .3 nm and the SNR has improved by 16 .7 times .The amplitudes of double-channel heterodyne inter-ferometer signal is 552 mV and 736 mV ,respectively ,which are larger than traditional one nearly 10 times ,it is advantageous to measure nanometer micro-vibration signals .

Abstract:A double-grating frequency shifter for low-coherence heterodyne interferometry is proposed. Compared with conventional frequency shifting methods, the new frequency shifter can generate frequency shift without additional optical path delay between different wavelengths. It also in principle has no scanning range limitation because the scanning mirror moves in a part of an optical system where different wavelength constituents of the light propagate in the same direction. To demonstrate the effectivity of the frequency shifter, a Twyman–Green interferometer was connected with the frequency shifter through an optical fiber. Displacement values measured by the low-coherence heterodyne interferometer have a standard deviation of 0.09μm for a displacement range of 50μm.

Abstract:According to the mechanism of the interferometric fiber-optic sensor, an optical orthogonal heterodyne demodulation technology has been investigated in this paper. A variable fiber delay line was used to adjust the optical phase delay to obtain optical orthogonal heterodyne demodulation, so that the low-frequency noise in the photo-detector can be reduced. Comparing with the conventional heterodyne demodulation schemes, the additional noise as well as temperature-related drift induced by the electronic phase drift devices can be eliminated by using the proposed demodulation technology. An experiment system was set up to measure the optical phase change induced by the piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) vibration. The result shows that the proposed scheme can demodulate the sensing signal efficiently, and a minimum detectable phase shift of 9.2 × 10 -5 rad can be achieved.

Abstract:Interferometric optomechanical accelerometers provide superior resolution, but the application is limited due to the non-ambiguity range that is always less than half of the wavelength, which corresponds to the order of mg. This paper proposes a novel acceleration measurement method based on synthetic wavelength and single wavelength superheterodyne interferometry to address this issue. Two acousto-optical modulators and several polarizers are introduced to the two-wavelength interferometry to create four beams with different frequencies and polarization states, and two ultra-narrow bandwidth filters are used to realize the single wavelength measurement simultaneously. This technique offers the possibility to expand the non-ambiguity range without compromising the high resolution. Also, the superheterodyne phase measurement and the corresponding processing algorithm are given to enable real-time measurement. A prototype is built and the preliminary experimental results are compared with the simulation results, showing good agreement. The results prove an estimated acceleration measurement resolution of around 10 μg and a non-ambiguity range of larger than 200 mg, which is more than 100 times that of the single wavelength-based optical accelerometer.

Abstract:A photonic approach to realizing instantaneous measurement of microwave frequency using a pair of fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based optical differentiators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this approach, a first-order and a second-order FBG-based optical differentiators are used to achieve a linear power ratio function with a uniform measurement resolution and improved system dynamic range. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed. A frequency measurement range of 6.5-15 GHz with a measurement resolution of ±0.3 GHz at different input microwave power levels is realized. The dynamic range of the system is analyzed and an improvement of about 10 dB is obtained.

Abstract:Heterodyne interferometry is a powerful tool for achieving high precision and fast measurement. We developed an angle measurement system based on heterodyne interferometry by combining discrete equal-spacing longitudinal modes of optical frequency comb with an acousto-optic modulator. Using a self-designed grating-corner-cube sensor, this method can achieve a two-dimensional angle measurement with sub-arcsecond accuracy and megahertz (MHz) update rate. We experimentally demonstrate a precision of 0.073 arcsec under a 3 MHz update rate, and comparison residuals are kept within 0.063 arcsec over 300 arcsec when compared to a piezo stage. In the dynamic measurement of a 40 Hz frequency, the continuous sinusoidal motion of 0.05 arcsec can be clearly distinguished and reconstructed.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) based on heterodyne detection is widely used for its simple structure and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, the large amount of raw data of Φ-OTDR places a heavy burden on the storage device and also limits the transferability of the data. In this Letter, we propose an ultra-low sampling resolution technique to solve the data storage problem in heterodyne Φ-OTDR. Experimental results show that the optical phase variations induced by external vibrations can be successfully demodulated from the 1-bit-resolution raw data, and a vibration SNR of 58.03 dB is achieved. In addition, this work also reveals that a data acquisition device with extremely low sampling resolution is sufficient for heterodyne Φ-OTDR, signifying that the cost of the system can be further decreased.

Abstract:A vibration-displacement measurement system by tracking the phase variation of an optical fiber Michelson interferometer with an electronic feedback loop is presented. The measurement system includes an electronic feedback loop which is used to track the phase variation induced by the measured vibration-displacement and provides a sense of direction of the displacement simultaneously. The measurement system is designed to be capable of measuring vibration-displacement with frequencies up to 200Hz and the measurement resolution can reach 13nm.

Abstract:Velocity and displacement measurements play an important role not only in the process of industrial production and metrology on the ground but also in satellite gravity measurement in space. A high-precision all-fiber heterodyne velocity and displacement interferometer based on digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) Doppler tracking is proposed in this paper. The target velocity is measured by tracking the heterodyne frequency changes of the beat-note signal, and the displacement is obtained by the integrated phase of the Doppler frequency change. A dual-signal differential optical-path scheme combined with DPLL signal tracking technology enables high-precision and high-linearity measurement of velocity and displacement simultaneously. For integration and compactness, the interferometer uses all-fiber optics that are packaged in a small box with dimensions of 150×150×70m m 3, except for an externally fiber-connected collimator as the sensor head. The experimental results show a velocity sensitivity below 30p m/s/H z 1/2 in the 0.03-2 Hz band and a displacement sensitivity below 10p m/H z 1/2 above 0.4 Hz.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel type of distributed optical fiber acoustic sensor, with the ability to detect and retrieve actual temporal waveforms of multiple vibration events that occur simultaneously at different positions along the fiber. The system is realized via a dual-pulse phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry, and the actual waveform is retrieved by heterodyne phase demodulation. Experimental results show that the system has a background noise level as low as 8.91×10-4 rad/√Hz with a demodulation signal-to-noise ratio of 49.17 dB at 1 kHz, and can achieve a dynamic range of ∼60 dB at 1 kHz (0.1 to 104 rad) for phase demodulation, as well as a detection frequency range from 20 Hz to 25 kHz.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel multilongitudinal mode fiber-optic vibration sensor is presented. The beat frequency of any two different laser modes is modulated by the vibration signal. The modulated beat frequency signal can be demodulated by a frequency-modulation demodulator. It is demonstrated that the vibration from 60 Hz to 20 KHz can be measured successfully. The sensor has high sensitivity and high signal-to-noise ratio, especially between 500 Hz and 7.4 KHz.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a dual-fiberoptic Fabry–Perot interferometer (FFPI) sensing system integrated with a low-cost and low-coherence light-emitting diode (LED) as a light source to detect dynamic vibration caused by acoustic waves with a cut-off frequency of 200 Hz. When the acoustic signals are applied, the sensing FFPI on a Styrofoam sheet provides the function of partially transforming the longitudinal energy as the transverse energy generates a phase shift in the sensing FFPI cavity. The light reflected from the sensor is demodulated by the reference FFPI to extract the measurand. The low-power (sub-nW) optical signals are transferred into electrical signals, processed by a designed optical receiver, and recorded for data analysis.

Abstract:A fiber heterodyne self-mixing interferometer with orthogonally polarized light compensation is achieved. This system can adapt to various complex scenes while still keeping ultra-high sensitivity and anti-disturbance capability. Ultra-high sensitivity microchip laser is used as the laser source and polarization maintaining(PM) fiber makes the light path easy to accommodate to complex spaces, such as remote or narrow and small space. Besides, orthogonally polarized light inside PM fiber can eliminate the measurement error on account of environment disturbance. At present, the displacement resolution could be less than 10nm, which shows a great potential in nano-metrology. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We proposed a multichannel optic fiber sensing system based on hybrid Sagnac structure to convert phase changes of light transmitting in optic fiber caused by vibrations to be detected into intensity changes of interference signals. By using the differential demodulation method, the originally applied vibration signal can be retrieved for further signal analysis. The auxiliary modulation method was introduced into this system so that even tiny vibration signals less than one period can also be detected precisely since all the original signals would be carried by the high frequency and large modulation signals. In the signal retrieve algorithm, we also added a response smoothing transform algorithm to improve the smoothness of the system's frequency response. Besides, in association with wavelength division multiplexer, this sensing system can realize multipoints' vibration detection. By designing the spatial arrangement of sensing fiber array according to application scenarios, this system can realize monitoring and positioning vibration sources with appropriate algorithms.

Abstract:Dual-frequency lasers are core components for many precise measurement applications.A wide-band spacial optical heterodyne signal acquisition system was designed for a dual-frequency Nd: YAG laser with a large frequency difference and low power.A large-diameter fiber collimator is used to couple spacial optical beam into the fiber.The optical signal is then converted to an electrical signal by a high-speed photoelectric receiver and amplified by an integrated microwave amplifier.The communication between the frequency counter and computer is realized using VB to collect and save the beat signal.The optical coupling efficiency of the system can reach 90% and the amplifier gain reaches 47 dB.Beat signals within 1.5 GHz can be effectively collected by this system,which has high efficiency,good portability and provides a reliable method for large frequency difference signal acquisition.

Abstract:An efficient convenient harmonic frequency measurement system is reported in this paper.The vibration of cantilever is detected by a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) glued on the cantilever.The relative Bragg wavelength drift is demodulated by a dense wavelength division multiplexing(DWDM) based on its transmission rate curve.The real-time signal sampled by data-acquisition-card is processed by computer,and some orders of harmonic frequencies are obtained.The experiment shows that the measurement results of fiber Bragg grating agree with acceleration transducer.The signal-to-noise ratio of the frequency-domain signal reaches 20dB in 1～4 order harmonic frequency.The dynamic resolution reaches 2.45×10~(-9) e/Hz.The result shows that the measurement system can efficiently measure the harmonic frequency.

Abstract:The fiber optic circulators in a form of point diffraction is a key component for coupling fiber and spatial optical paths in laser Doppler vibration measurement systems. The coupling efficiency and other performance parameters of fiber optic circulators are great significant for improving measurement accuracy and working distance of vibration measurement system. The conventional circulator coincidence detection methods include energy monitoring method and far-field coincidence monitoring method, which cannot be used to quantitatively analyze the fiber mismatch factors. Therefore, the consistency of the circulator coupling efficiency cannot be guaranteed. To solve these problems, a phase detection technology based on Hertz-level frequency-shifting heterodyne interferometry is proposed. The interferometry phase information is used to calculate the relative spatial positions of optical fibers, and this technology performs quantitative detection during the fiber alignment process. The interference wavefront formed by relative spatial positions of optical fibers was simulated and validated by experiments. The curves of coupling efficiency and wavefront PV value versus different kinds of alignment errors were simulated and analyzed. By fitting the interference wavefront with the Zernike polynomials, the correspondence between different kinds of alignment errors and Zernike coefficients was obtained. The value of Z2 (Zernike coefficient) can be used as the basis for judging whether there is transverse displacement in the Y direction. Similarly, Z3 corresponds to the transverse displacement in the X direction, Z4 corresponds to the longitudinal displacement in the Z direction and Z5 corresponds to the optical axis angle. Through this correspondence relationship, the quantitative separation and analysis of fiber mismatch factors are realized. The experimental results show that the measurement accuracy of this method for transverse displacement achieves better than 1μm. According to the phase diagram obtained from the experiment, Zernike coefficient fitting was performed, as shown in Figure 13 (a) and Table 3. The transverse displacement deviation, longitudinal displacement deviation, and angle deviation were calculated by the coefficients of Z2 to Z5. The fiber adjustment mechanism corrected the transverse displacement deviation, and the experimental phase diagram was shown in Figure 14. It provides a new detection method for fiber alignment and mismatch correction. Compared with the existing detection methods, the phase detection method based on Hertz-level frequency-shifting heterodyne interferometry solves the quantification problem of fiber coincidence adjustment. This method has the advantages of high measurement accuracy, compact detection structure and composition, and low detection cost. This method has great potential for application in the fields of optical fiber and spatial optical device alignment, optical system aberration detection, and planar wavefront detection.

Abstract:The multiplexing technique of optical fiber displacement sensor based on the principles of frequency-modulation continuous wave and heterodyne interference and frequency-division multiplexing was studied here. A four-channel multiplexing optical fiber displacement sensor using the scheme of frequency-amplitude-division multiplexing was designed and fabricated, so that many points or multi-dimensional displacements or many physical parameters can be measured at the same time. The measurement accuracy for each channel is of 0.1 ��m and the measurement range is of more than 1mm. The highest resolution of displacement is of 0.01 ��m.
