Abstract:Microresonator-based optical frequency comb (microcomb) has the potential to revolutionize the accuracy of frequency synthesizer in radar and communication applications. However, fundamental limit exists for low noise microcomb generation, especially in low size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) package. Here we resolve this limit, by the demonstration of an automated turnkey microcomb, operating close to its low quantum-limited phase noise, within a compact setup size of 85 mm * 90 mm * 25 mm. High quality factor fiber Fabry-Perot resonator (FFPR), with Q up to 4.0 * 10^9, is the key for both low quantum noise and pump noise limit, in the diode-pump case in a self-injection locking scheme. Low phase noise of -80 and -105 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz, -106 and -125 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz, -133 and -148 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz is achieved at 10.1 GHz and 1.7 GHz repetition frequencies, respectively. With the simultaneous automated turnkey, low-noise and direct-diode-pump capability, our microcomb is ready to be used as a low-noise frequency synthesizer with low SWaP-C and thus field deployability.
Microresonator-referenced soliton microcombs with zeptosecond-level timing noise

Abstract:Optical frequency division relies on optical frequency combs to coherently translate ultra-stable optical frequency references to the microwave domain. This technology has enabled microwave synthesis with ultralow timing noise, but the required instruments are too bulky for real-world applications. Here, we develop a compact optical frequency division system using microresonator-based frequency references and comb generators. The soliton microcomb formed in an integrated Si$_3$N$_4$ microresonator is stabilized to two lasers referenced to an ultrahigh-$Q$ MgF$_2$ microresonator. Photodetection of the soliton pulse train produces 25 GHz microwaves with absolute phase noise of -141 dBc/Hz (547 zs Hz$^{-1/2}$) at 10 kHz offset frequency. The synthesized microwaves are tested as local oscillators in jammed communication channels, resulting in improved fidelity compared with those derived from electronic oscillators. Our work demonstrates unprecedented coherence in miniature microwave oscillators, providing key building blocks for next-generation timekeeping, navigation, and satellite communication systems.

Abstract:Soliton microcombs are regarded as an ideal platform for applications such as optical communications, optical sensing, low-noise microwave sources, optical atomic clocks, and frequency synthesizers. Many of these applications require a broad comb spectrum that covers an octave, essential for implementing the f - 2f self-referencing techniques. In this work, we have successfully generated an octave-spanning soliton microcomb based on a z-cut thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) microresonator. This achievement is realized under on-chip optical pumping at 340 mW and through extensive research into the broadening of dual dispersive waves (DWs). Furthermore, the repetition rate of the octave soliton microcomb is accurately measured using an electro-optic comb generated by an x-cut TFLN racetrack microresonator. Our results represent a crucial step toward the realization of practical, integrated, and fully stabilized soliton microcomb systems based on TFLN.

Abstract:Microwave technology has played a pivotal role in advancing global science and technology, profoundly impacting human life over the past few centuries. The evolution of microwave technology has not only enabled wireless communication, transforming interpersonal interaction and catalyzing the emergence of mobile internet technology, but also opened up new frontiers in radio astronomy and precision measurement, among other fields. In contemporary applications, there is a growing demand for low-noise, high carrier frequency microwaves. This poses a challenge for traditional electrical microwave synthesis methods to meet these requirements effectively. However, the innovative approach of microwave photonics provides a solution, where low-noise microwave signals are generated through the beat signal of optical components. The core of microwave photonics is the utilization of optical frequency combs (OFC), serving as a key component that establishes a direct link between optical and microwave frequencies. Microwaves synthesized by down-conversion of ultra-stable optical frequencies based on traditional optical frequency combs typically exhibit ultra-low noise. However, the generation of traditional optical frequency combs often relies on solid-state or fiber mode-locked lasers, which are characterized by large volume and high power consumption. These factors have hindered the large-scale application of traditional optical frequency comb-synthesized microwaves, confining them to laboratory settings. Recently, a groundbreaking class of optical frequency combs has emerged to address the longstanding challenges-Microcombs. Microcombs are generated through the non-linear four-wave mixing effect in high-quality factor microresonators. In the time domain, they achieve mode-locking by forming dissipative temporal solitons through a delicate balance of dispersion and nonlinearity, as well as gain and loss. In comparison to their traditional counterparts, microcombs offer several advantages, including small size, low power consumption, high integration capabilities, and a wide range of repetition rates. These features make microcombs highly attractive for applications in precision measurement and microwave photonics, garnering increasing attention from both the scientific and industrial communities. Leveraging the high integration advantages of microcombs, low-noise microwave synthesis has emerged as a prominent and active research area. Microcombs can be utilized to directly synthesize microwaves or by means of optical frequency division. In the direct synthesis of microwaves using microcombs, employing techniques like quiet point operation and injection locking becomes crucial to suppress the repetition frequency noise of microcombs, ensuring the generation of lower-noise microwave signals. On the other hand, when employing the optical frequency division method, a common practice is the use of two-point locking to simplify the system. Additionally, the common mode suppression effect is utilized to suppress the relative frequency noise of the two lasers. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the methodologies and current status of low-noise microwave synthesis based on microcombs, offering insights into its potential and future development.
Passively stable 0.7-octave microcombs in thin-film lithium niobate microresonators

Abstract:Optical frequency comb based on microresonator (microcomb) is an integrated coherent light source and has the potential to promise a high-precision frequency standard, and self-reference and long-term stable microcomb is the key to this realization. Here, we demonstrated a 0.7-octave spectrum Kerr comb via dispersion engineering in a thin film lithium niobate microresonator, and the single soliton state can be accessed passively with long-term stability over 3 hours. With such a robust broadband coherent comb source using thin film lithium niobate, fully stabilized microcomb can be expected for massive practical applications.

Abstract:Microwave photonic technologies, which upshift the carrier into the optical domain to facilitate the generation and processing of ultrawide-band electronic signals at vastly reduced fractional bandwidths, have the potential to achieve superior performance compared to conventional electronics for targeted functions. For microwave photonic applications such as filters, coherent radars, subnoise detection, optical communications and low-noise microwave generation, frequency combs are key building blocks. By virtue of soliton microcombs, frequency combs can now be built using CMOS compatible photonic integrated circuits, operated with low power and noise, and have already been employed in system-level demonstrations. Yet, currently developed photonic integrated microcombs all operate with repetition rates significantly beyond those that conventional electronics can detect and process, compounding their use in microwave photonics. Here we demonstrate integrated soliton microcombs operating in two widely employed microwave bands, X- and K-band. These devices can produce more than 300 comb lines within the 3-dB-bandwidth, and generate microwave signals featuring phase noise levels below 105 dBc/Hz (140 dBc/Hz) at 10 kHz (1 MHz) offset frequency, comparable to modern electronic microwave synthesizers. In addition, the soliton pulse stream can be injection-locked to a microwave signal, enabling actuator-free repetition rate stabilization, tuning and microwave spectral purification, at power levels compatible with silicon-based lasers (<150 mW). Our results establish photonic integrated soliton microcombs as viable integrated low-noise microwave synthesizers. Further, the low repetition rates are critical for future dense WDM channel generation schemes, and can significantly reduce the system complexity of photonic integrated frequency synthesizers and atomic clocks.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs have a wide range of applications in science and technology 1 . An important development for miniature and integrated comb systems is the formation of dissipative Kerr solitons in coherently pumped high-quality-factor optical microresonators 2 – 9 . Such soliton microcombs 10 have been applied to spectroscopy 11 – 13 , the search for exoplanets 14 , 15 , optical frequency synthesis 16 , time keeping 17 and other areas 10 . In addition, the recent integration of microresonators with lasers has revealed the viability of fully chip-based soliton microcombs 18 , 19 . However, the operation of microcombs requires complex startup and feedback protocols that necessitate difficult-to-integrate optical and electrical components, and microcombs operating at rates that are compatible with electronic circuits—as is required in nearly all comb systems—have not yet been integrated with pump lasers because of their high power requirements. Here we experimentally demonstrate and theoretically describe a turnkey operation regime for soliton microcombs co-integrated with a pump laser. We show the appearance of an operating point at which solitons are immediately generated by turning the pump laser on, thereby eliminating the need for photonic and electronic control circuitry. These features are combined with high-quality-factor Si 3 N 4 resonators to provide microcombs with repetition frequencies as low as 15 gigahertz that are fully integrated into an industry standard (butterfly) package, thereby offering compelling advantages for high-volume production.

Abstract: Microcombs are revolutionizing optoelectronics by providing parallelized, mutually coherent wavelength channels for time-frequency metrology and information processing. To implement this essential function in integrated photonic systems, it is desirable to drive microcombs directly with an on-chip laser in a simple and flexible way. However, two major difficulties are preventing this goal: 1) generating mode-locked comb states usually requires a significant amount of pump power and 2) the requirement to align laser and resonator frequency significantly complicates operation and limits the tunability of the comb lines. Here, we address these problems by using microresonators on an AlGaAs on-insulator platform to generate dark-pulse microcombs. This highly nonlinear platform dramatically relaxes fabrication requirements and leads to a record-low pump power of less than 1 mW for coherent comb generation. Dark-pulse microcombs facilitated by thermally-controlled avoided mode-crossings are accessed by direct DFB laser pumping. Without any feedback or control circuitries, the comb shows good coherence and stability. This approach also leads to an unprecedented wide chirping range of all the comb lines. Our work provides a route to realize power-efficient, simple and reconfigurable microcombs that can be seamlessly integrated with a wide range of photonic systems.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs have revolutionized frequency metrology and timekeeping, and can be used in a wide range of optical technologies. Advances are under way that allow dramatic miniaturization of optical frequency combs using Kerr nonlinear optical microresonators, where broadband and coherent optical frequency combs can be generated from a continuous wave laser. Such `microcombs', provide a broad bandwidth with low power consumption, unprecedented form factor, wafer scale fabrication compatibility. For future high volume applications, integration and electrical pumping of soliton microcombs is essential. To date, however, microcombs still rely on optical pumping by bulk external laser modules that provide the required coherence, frequency agility and power levels for soliton formation. Electrically-driven, chip-integrated microcombs are inhibited by the high threshold power for soliton formation, typically exceeding the power of integrated silicon based lasers, and the required frequency agility for soliton initiation. Recent advances in high-Q Si3N4 microresonators suggest that electrically driven soliton microcombs are possible. Here we demonstrate an electrically-driven, chip-integrated soliton microcomb by coupling an indium phosphide (III-V) multiple-longitudinal-mode laser diode chip to a high-Q Si3N4 photonic integrated microresonator. We observe that self-injection locking of the laser diode to the microresonator, which is accompanied by a x1000 fold narrowing of the laser linewidth, can simultaneously initiate the formation of dissipative Kerr solitons. By tuning the current, we observe a transition from modulation instability, breather solitons to single soliton states. The system requires less than 1 Watt of electrical power, operates at electronically-detectable sub-100 GHz mode spacing and can fit in a volume of ca. 1cm3.

Abstract:We demonstrate two low-noise 750 MHz ytterbium fiber frequency combs that are independently stabilized to a continuous-wave laser. A bulk electro-optic modulator and a single-stack piezo-electric transducer are employed as fast actuators for stabilizing the respective cavity length to heterodyne beat notes. Both combs exhibit in-loop fractional frequency instabilities of ∼10-18 at 1 s. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of tightly phase-locked (<1 rad root mean square phase noise integrated from 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz) fiber frequency combs with 750 MHz fundamental repetition rate.

Abstract:Ultralow-noise microwaves are essential in a wide variety of scientific and technological applications, such as metrology, radars, and communications. Here, we propose and demonstrate a scheme for generating an ultralow-noise microwave signal using a Brillouin optical frequency comb (OFC), which is based on the stimulated Brillouin scattering in combination with a frequency-shifted optical injection locking mechanism. The generated two intra-cavity Brillouin lasers are used as the intra-cavity pump for the eventual formation of the OFC and thus the microwave signal via the cascaded four-wave mixing process. Exploiting the cascaded narrowing effect in the Brillouin cavity assisted by the frequency-shifted optical injection locking, the proposed microwave signal source exhibits ultralow phase noise. Experimental results show that the phase noise of the microwave signal is equivalent to below −115 dBc/Hz for a 200-GHz carrier at 10 kHz offset. The system can work in stable operation without the need for any active feedback loop.

Abstract:Micro-optical frequency combs are miniaturized coherent light sources exhibiting a tremendous influence on precision spectroscopy, optical clocks, and high-speed optical communications. The rare-earth-doped lithium niobate (LN) is a promising platform to integrate the lasers and comb sources on the same chip of single material. However, microcombs generated in rare-earth-doped LN thin film (LNTF) have not yet been fully explored. To explore the protocols of generating optical combs in ytterbium-doped LNTF, the comb-like laser is studied in the 1060 nm band, and the dissipative Kerr soliton is experimentally demonstrated in the telecom band in a Z-cut wafer. The over-coupled fundamental transverse electric mode with anomalous dispersion is excited at an on-chip pump power of 75.7 mW to generate the robust bright soliton. The broadband spectrum of the Kerr soliton ranges from 1480 to 1660 nm with 110 comb lines, whose repetition rate is 197.8 GHz. The mode-locking of the soliton can be achieved as a result of the photorefractive effect of ytterbium-doped LNTF instead of complex feedback schemes. Numerical simulations are highly accordant with the experimental results. This work expands the microcomb-generating platform and increases the potential for integrated on-chip applications including precision ranging and frequency division.

Abstract:We demonstrate a chip-based octave-spanning soliton microcomb in a whispering gallery mode microresonator platform. By fabricating a silica microdisk resonator and optimizing its dispersion with dry etching, we achieve an octave-spanning single-soliton microcomb with a repetition rate of ∼670 GHz at an optical pump power of 162.6 mW. Also, two dispersive waves at the end of the spectrum are observed to extend the comb spectral range and improve the comb power.
High-efficiency and broadband electro-optic frequency combs enabled by coupled micro-resonators

Abstract:Developments in integrated photonics have led to stable, compact, and broadband comb generators that support a wide range of applications. Current on-chip comb generators, however, are still limited by low optical pump-to-comb conversion efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate an integrated electro-optic frequency comb with a conversion efficiency of 30% and an optical bandwidth of 132 nm, featuring a 100-times higher conversion efficiency and 2.2-times broader optical bandwidth compared with previous state-of-the-art integrated electro-optic combs. We further show that, enabled by the high efficiency, the device acts as an on-chip femtosecond pulse source (336 fs pulse duration), which is important for applications in nonlinear optics, sensing, and computing. As an example, in the ultra-fast and high-power regime, we demonstrate the observation of a combined EO-\chi^(3) nonlinear frequency comb. Our device paves the way for practical optical frequency comb generators enabling energy-efficient computing, communication, and metrology, and provides a platform to investigate new regimes of optical physics that simultaneously involve multiple nonlinearities.
Soliton Microwave Oscillators Using Oversized Billion Q Optical Microresonators

Abstract:Microresonator soliton frequency combs offer unique flexibility in synthesizing microwaves over a wide range of frequencies, while their phase noise is currently limited by thermal noise. Enlarging the mode volume would mitigate thermal noise but also raise power consumption. Here, we fabricate optical microresonators with large mode volumes by lathe machining high-purity fiber preforms. Quality factors greater than 4 billion result in a record-low threshold power of 110 µW to initiate comb operation in millimeter-sized devices. The synthesized X-band microwaves with an absolute phase noise level of − 107 ( − 133 ) d B c / H z at 1(10) kHz offset frequency feature considerable noise reduction compared to other silica-microresonator-based oscillators, which are further used to cope with high-speed data links as carrier waves. Our work illuminates a pathway toward low-noise photonic microwave generation as well as the quantum regime of soliton microcombs.
Brillouin-Kerr soliton frequency combs in an optical microresonator

Abstract:By generating a Brillouin laser in an optical microresonator, we realize a soliton Kerr microcomb through exciting the Kerr frequency comb using the generated Brillouin laser in the same cavity. The intracavity Brillouin laser pumping scheme enables us to access the soliton states with a blue-detuned input pump. Due to the ultra-narrow linewidth and the low-noise properties of the generated Brillouin laser, the observed soliton microcomb exhibits narrow-linewidth comb lines and stable repetition rate even by using a diode laser with relatively broad linewidth. Also, we demonstrate a low-noise microwave signal with phase noise levels of -24 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz, -111 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz, and -147 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offsets for a 11.14 GHz carrier with only a free-running input pump. The easy operation of the Brillouin-Kerr soliton microcomb with excellent performance makes our scheme promising for practical applications.

Abstract:Recently developed techniques for generating precisely equidistant optical frequencies over broad wavelength ranges are revolutionizing precision physical measurement [1-3]. These frequency "combs" are produced primarily using relatively large, ultrafast laser systems. However, recent research has shown that broad-bandwidth combs can be produced using highly-nonlinear interactions in microresonator optical parametric oscillators [4-11]. Such devices not only offer the potential for developing extremely compact optical atomic clocks but are also promising for astronomical spectroscopy [12-14], ultrashort pulse shaping [15], and ultrahigh-speed communications systems. Here we demonstrate the generation of broad-bandwidth optical frequency combs from a CMOS-compatible integrated microresonator [16,17], which is a fully-monolithic and sealed chip-scale device making it insensitive to the surrounding environment. We characterize the comb quality using a novel self-referencing method and verify that the comb line frequencies are equidistant over a bandwidth that is nearly an order of magnitude larger than previous measurements. In addition, we investigate the ultrafast temporal properties of the comb and demonstrate its potential to serve as a chip-scale source of ultrafast (sub-ps) pulses.

Abstract:AbstractThe rapid development of optical frequency combs from their table-top origins towards chip-scale platforms has opened up exciting possibilities for comb functionalities outside laboratories. Enhanced nonlinear processes in microresonators have emerged as a mainstream comb-generating mechanism with compelling advantages in size, weight, and power consumption. The established understanding of gain and loss in nonlinear microresonators, along with recently developed ultralow-loss nonlinear photonic circuitry, has boosted the optical energy conversion efficiency of microresonator frequency comb (microcomb) devices from below a few percent to above 50%. This review summarizes the latest advances in novel photonic devices and pumping strategies that contribute to these milestones of microcomb efficiency. The resulting benefits for high-performance integration of comb applications are also discussed before summarizing the remaining challenges.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs are indispensable links between the optical and microwave domains, enabling a wide range of applications including precision spectroscopy, ultrastable frequency generation, and timekeeping. Chip-scale integration miniaturizes bulk implementations onto photonic chips, offering highly compact, stable, and power-efficient frequency comb sources. State of the art integrated frequency comb sources are based on resonantly-enhanced Kerr effect and, more recently, on electro-optic effect. While the former can routinely reach octave-spanning bandwidths and the latter feature microwave-rate spacings, achieving both in the same material platform has been challenging. Here, we leverage both strong Kerr nonlinearity and efficient electro-optic phase modulation available in the ultralow-loss thin-film lithium niobate photonic platform, to demonstrate a hybrid Kerr-electro-optic frequency comb with stabilized spacing. In our approach, a dissipative Kerr soliton is first generated, and then electro-optic division is used to realize a frequency comb with 2,589 comb lines spaced by 29.308 GHz and spanning 75.9 THz (588 nm) end-to-end. Further, we demonstrate electronic stabilization and control of the soliton spacing, naturally facilitated by our approach. The broadband, microwave-rate comb in this work overcomes the spacing-span tradeoff that exists in all integrated frequency comb sources, and paves the way towards chip-scale solutions for complex tasks such as laser spectroscopy covering multiple bands, micro- and millimeter-wave generation, and massively parallel optical communications.
