Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Hydrogels play an important role in the design and fabrication of wearable sensors with outstanding flexibility, high sensitivity and versatility. Since hydrogels lose and absorb water during changes in humidity and temperature, it is critical and challenging to obtain hydrogels that function properly under different environmental conditions. Herein, a dual network hydrogel based on tannic acid (TA) reinforced polyacrylamide (PAM) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was constructed, while the introduction of the green solvents Solketal and LiCl endowed the hydrogel with greater possibilities for further modification to improve the water content and consistency of the mechanical properties over 30-90 % RH. This composite hydrogel (PTSL) has long-term stability, excellent mechanical strength, and freezing resistance. As strain sensors, they are linear over the entire strain range (R2 = 0.994) and have a high sensitivity (GF = 2.52 over 0-680 % strain range). Furthermore, the hydrogel's exceptional electrical conductivity and freezing resistance are a result of the synergistic effect of Solketal and LiCl, which intensifies the contact between the water molecules and the colloidal phase. This research could address the suitability of hydrogels over a wide range of humidity and temperature, suggesting great applications for smart flexible wearable electronics in harsh environmental conditions.

Abstract:Flexible strain sensors, based on their good electrical conductivity and strain sensitivity, are widely used in wearable health monitoring, sensitive tactile information display and multi-functional robot skin. However, it is still a challenge for wearable devices to prepare conductive hydrogel with flexibility, high strain, high sensitivity and biocompatibility. Herein, we designed an interpenetrating network conductive composite hydrogel, which composed with polyaniline, double bond modified chitosan and acrylamide, has excellent strength and toughness due to its unique physically and chemically cross-linked double network. The obtained hydrogel exhibited good tensile strength (0.3 MPa), high electrical conductivity (6.97 S/m) and strain sensitivity (gauge factor 15.9). The results showed that the strain sensor could detect the movement of human joints through electrical signals, and had good stability and reproducibility, which indicated that it was expected to be used in wearable health monitoring and multi-functional robot skin.

Abstract:Wearable strain sensors of conductive hydrogels have very broad application prospects in electronic skins and human-machine interfaces. However, conductive hydrogels suffer from unstable signal transmission due to environmental humidity and inherent shortcomings of their materials. Herein, we introduce a novel moisture-proof conductive hydrogel with high toughness (2.89 MJ m-3), mechanical strength (1.00 MPa), and high moisture-proof sensing performance by using dopamine-functionalized gold nanoparticles as conductive fillers into carboxymethyl guar gum and acrylamide. Moreover, the hydrogel can realize real-time monitoring of major and subtle human movements with good sensitivity and repeatability. In addition, the hydrogel-assembled strain sensor exhibits stable sensing signals after being left for 1 h, and the relative resistance change rate under different strains (25-300%) shows no obvious noise signal up to 99% relative humidity. Notably, the wearable strain sensing is suitable for wearable sensor devices with high relative humidity.

Abstract:In the fields of electronic skin and soft wearable sensors, intrinsically stretchable conductors undergo rapid development; however, practical applications of artificial skinlike materials/devices have not been realized because of the difficulty in combining the electromechanical properties and sensing performance. Contrarily, insoluble inorganic conductive domains in the hydrogel matrix are generally incompatible with surrounding elastic networks, decreasing the mechanical strength. Usually, the hydrogels are vulnerable either to severe mechanical stimuli or large deformation, especially when notches are induced. In this study, based on an energy-dissipative dual-crosslinked conductive hydrogel, a mechanically durable and super-tough strain sensor was developed. The highly soft yet dynamically tough hydrogel demonstrated high ionic conductivity (30.2 mS cm−1), ultrastretchability (>600% strain), and superior linear dependence of strain sensitivity with a maximum gauge factor of 1.2 at 500% strain. Because of these advantageous synergistic effects, the resultant hydrogel strain sensor demonstrated reliable and stable detection of a large range of human motion and subtle vibrations. Moreover, it impressively exhibited super toughness that could endure consecutive treading pressure and even retain normal operation after 20 times of car run-over on the road. These demonstrations highly confirm the sensor's superior mechanical durability and reliability, displaying great potential in developing next-generation mechanically adaptable sensors.

Abstract:Flexible strain sensors are broadly investigated in electronic skins and human-machine interaction due to their light weight, high sensitivity, and wide sensing range. Hydrogels with unique three-dimensional network structures are widely used in flexible strain sensors for their exceptional flexibility and adaptability to mechanical deformation. However, hydrogels often suffer damage, hardening, and collapse under harsh conditions, such as extreme temperatures and humidity levels, which lead to sensor performance degradation or even failure. In addition, the failure mechanism under extreme environments remains unclear. In this review, the performance degradation and failure mechanism of hydrogel flexible strain sensors under various harsh conditions are examined. Subsequently, strategies towards the environmental tolerance of hydrogel flexible strain sensors are summarized. Finally, the current challenges of hydrogel flexible strain sensors in harsh environments are discussed, along with potential directions for future development and applications.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels hold great promises in wearable soft electronics. However, the weak mechanical properties, low sensitivity and the absence of multifunctionalities (e.g., self-healing, self-adhesive, etc.) of the conventional conductive hydrogels limit their applications. Thus, developing multifunctional hydrogels may address some of these technical issues. In this work, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel strain sensor is fabricated by incorporating a conductive polymer Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) into a mechanically robust poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/ poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) double network (DN) hydrogel. The as-prepared hydrogel sensor could span a wide spectrum of mechanical properties by simply tuning the polymer composition and the number of freezing-thawing cycles. In addition, the dynamic hydrogen bonding interactions endow the hydrogel sensor with self-healing property and reversible adhesiveness on diverse substrates. Moreover, the hydrogel sensor shows high sensitivity (Gauge Factor from 2.21 to 3.82) and can precisely detect some subtle human motions (e.g., pulse and vocal cord vibration). This work provides useful insights into the development of conductive hydrogel-based wearable soft electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels (CHs) have been highlighted in the design of flexible strain sensors and stretchable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) on the basis of their excellent physicochemical properties such as large stretchability and high conductivity. Nevertheless, the incident freezing and drying behaviors of CHs by using water solvent as the dispersion medium limit their application scopes significantly. Herein, an environment tolerant and ultrastretchable organohydrogel is demonstrated by a simple solvent-replacement strategy, in which the partial water in the as-synthesized polyacrylamide/montmorillonite/carbon nanotubes hydrogel is replaced with the glycerol, leading to excellent temperature toleration (−60 to 60 °C) and good stability (30 days under normal environment) without sacrificing the stretchability and conductivity. The organohydrogel exhibits an ultrawide strain sensing range (0–4196%) with a high sensitivity of 8.5, enabling effective detection and discrimination of human activities that are gentle or drastic under various conditions. Furthermore, the organohydrogel is assembled in a single-electrode TENG, which displays excellent energy harvesting ability even under a stretchability of 500% and robustness to directly power wearable electronics in harsh cold conditions. This work inspires a simple route for multifunctional organohydrogel and promises the practical application of flexible and self-powered wearable devices in extreme environments.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels are promising multifunctional materials for wearable sensors, but their practical applications require combined properties that are difficult to achieve. Herein, we developed a flexible wearable sensor with double-layer structure based on conductive composite hydrogel, which included the outer layer of silicone elastomer (Ecoflex)/silica microparticle composite film and the inner layer of P(AAm-co-HEMA)-MXene-AgNPs hydrogel. Through covalently cross-linking silicone elastomer on the surface of the hydrogel polymer, we bonded a thin Ecoflex film (100 μm) on the P(AAm-co-HEMA)-MXene-AgNPs hydrogel with robust interface, which can easily adhere to the Ecoflex/SiO2 microparticle composite film by silicone glue. The Ecoflex/SiO2 microparticle composite film endows the strain wearable sensor with superhydrophobic function that could maintain the stability under stretching or bending. Moreover, it can effectively resist the interference of water droplets and water flow. The P(AAm-co-HEMA)-MXene-AgNPs hydrogel exhibits outstanding antibacterial activity to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and even drug-resistant Escherichia coli. In addition, the flexible wearable sensor exhibited good self-adhesive performance by changing the reaction temperature of hydrogel and can adhere strongly onto various materials. The conductive composite hydrogel reported in this work contributes an innovative strategy for the preparation of multifunctional flexible wearable sensor.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have been widely studied for the potential application as wearable sensors due to their flexibility and biocompatibility. However, the simultaneous incorporation of excellent stretchability, toughness, conductivity, self-healing, and adhesion via a simple method remains a grand challenge. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel with self-adhesion, self-healing, conductivity, and mechanical properties was fabricated by ion cross-linking chitosan (CS), acrylic acid (AA) polymer, and tea polyphenols (TP) in the presence of graphitized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in this work. The resultant hydrogel has a unique self-healing property (94.11% for strain self-healing and 90.60% for stress self-healing) and mechanical properties. The fracture stress was 0.075 MPa with the strain was 1184%, and the toughness reaches 0.48 MJ/m3. The synergistic effect of free ions and CNTs endows the hydrogel excellent electrical conductivity (6.67 S·m-1). Moreover, the hydrogel can adhere to various organic and inorganic materials. It exhibits repeatable self-adhesion to human skin and can be peeled off completely without any residual, irritation or allergic reactions. Additionally, the hydrogel also has good strain sensitivity and stable output signals in motion monitoring of human body as biosensor. Therefore, this work provides a new prospect for the design of multifunctional hydrogels for potential applications in wearable biosensors.

Abstract:Skin-like soft conductive hydrogels with intrinsic mechanical flexibility exhibit promising potential as flexible electrical sensors. However, dilemmas remain regarding their electrical conductivity and fragile nature. Herein, a method including freeze-drying and rehydration of hydrogels to optimize the abovementioned properties is proposed. Poly(vinyl alcohol)-based conductive hydrogels are fabricated by freeze-drying and rehydration of prehydrogels in AgNO3 solution, which results in densified polymer networks along with a “fish scale-like” surface consisting of inorganic materials originating from spontaneously interconnected Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the exterior surface of hydrogels. The densified polymer networks dramatically improve the mechanical properties, while the AgNPs serve as electron transfer carriers for high electrical conductivity. Consequently, the prepared hydrogels realize 20 times improvement in both strength (3 MPa) and toughness (2.12 MJ/m3) along with ideal electrical conductivity (3.98 mS/cm) and strain sensitivity (GF = 4.12). The obtained conductive hydrogels can serve as strain sensors to monitor human motions and exhibit desirable antibacterial properties.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have drawn significant attention in the field of stretchable/wearable sensors due to their intrinsic stretchability, tunable conductivity, biocompatibility, multistimuli sensitivity, and self-healing ability. Recent advancements in hydrogel- and organohydrogel-based sensors, including a novel sensing mechanism, outstanding performance, and broad application scenarios, suggest the great potential of hydrogels for stretchable electronics. However, a systematic summary of hydrogel- and organohydrogel-based sensors in terms of their working principles, unique properties, and promising applications is still lacking. In this spotlight, we present recent advances in hydrogel- and organohydrogel-based stretchable sensors with four main sections: improved stability of hydrogels, fabrication and characterization of organohydrogel, working principles, and performance of different types of sensors. We particularly highlight our recent work on ultrastretchable and high-performance strain, temperature, humidity, and gas sensors based on polyacrylamide/carrageenan double network hydrogel and ethylene glycol/glycerol modified organohydrogels obtained via a facile solvent displacement strategy. The organohydrogels display higher stability (drying and freezing tolerances) and sensing performances than corresponding hydrogels. The sensing mechanisms, key factors influencing the performance, and application prospects of these sensors are revealed. Especially, we find that the hindering effect of polymer networks on the ionic transport is one of the key mechanisms applicable for all four of these kinds of sensors.

Abstract:Flexible sensors have shown great potential in remote health monitoring, body movements track, electronic skin, human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. Hydrogels possess exceptional stretchability, flexibility and biocompatibility that that render them appealing candidates for wearable flexible sensors. Among them, considerable efforts have been devoted to developing conductive hydrogels to achieve multifunctional wearable sensing through using functional groups/additives/nanofillers to modify the hydrogel network in recent years. This review summarizes recent advances of applications of hydrogels in flexible wearable sensors, such as sweat sampling and flexible electrodes, strain/pressure sensors and touch panels, focuses on the multifunctional conductive hydrogels-based flexible wearable sensors with self-healing, self-adhesion, or anti-freezing capabilities. A brief introduction to representative synthesis methods and strategies of conductive hydrogels is also presented. In the end, we also provide a personal perspective on the future development, and address the remaining challenges in the commercialization of conductive hydrogels-based multifunctional flexible wearable sensors.
