Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.

Abstract:In recent years, the field of flexible electronics has been thriving in academic achievements. Among them, the hydrogel‐based strain sensors possess some characteristic advantages in stretchability, flexibility, stickiness and regulable modulus of elasticity, thus they are more likely to attach to human skin and the surfaces of objects. Compared to traditional sensors, hydrogels can overcome shortcomings in toughness and elasticity. Therefore, hydrogels are suitable to serve as the core materials of wearable electronics. Hydrogel‐based strain sensors, as a typical kind of hydrogel flexible electronics, are in the categories of resistance sensors and capacitive sensors, which are primarily used for real‐time monitoring of human motions. This review mainly introduces the up‐to‐date relative literatures in the field of hydrogel‐based strain sensors.

Abstract:The rapid development of tough conductive hydrogels has led to considerable progress in the fields of tissue engineering, soft robots, flexible electronics, etc. Compared to other kinds of traditional sensing materials, tough conductive hydrogels have advantages in flexibility, stretchability and biocompatibility due to their biological structures. Numerous hydrogel flexible sensors have been developed based on specific demands for practical applications. This review focuses on tough conductive hydrogels for flexible sensors. Representative tactics to construct tough hydrogels and strategies to fulfill conductivity, which are of significance to fabricating tough conductive hydrogels, are briefly reviewed. Then, diverse tough conductive hydrogels are presented and discussed. Additionally, recent advancements in flexible sensors assembled with different tough conductive hydrogels as well as various designed structures and their sensing performances are demonstrated in detail. Applications, including the wearable skins, bionic muscles and robotic systems of these hydrogel-based flexible sensors with resistive and capacitive modes are discussed. Some perspectives on tough conductive hydrogels for flexible sensors are also stated at the end. This review will provide a comprehensive understanding of tough conductive hydrogels and will offer clues to researchers who have interests in pursuing flexible sensors.

Abstract:Hydrogels, as classic soft materials, are important materials for tissue engineering and biosensing with unique properties, such as good biocompatibility, high stretchability, strong adhesion, excellent self-healing, and self-recovery. Conductive hydrogels possess the additional property of conductivity, which endows them with advanced applications in actuating devices, biomedicine, and sensing. In this review, we provide an overview of the recent development of conductive hydrogels in the field of strain sensors, with particular focus on the types of conductive fillers, including ionic conductors, conducting nanomaterials, and conductive polymers. The synthetic methods of such conductive hydrogel materials and their physical and chemical properties are highlighted. At last, challenges and future perspectives of conductive hydrogels applied in flexible strain sensors are discussed.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels hold great promises in wearable soft electronics. However, the weak mechanical properties, low sensitivity and the absence of multifunctionalities (e.g., self-healing, self-adhesive, etc.) of the conventional conductive hydrogels limit their applications. Thus, developing multifunctional hydrogels may address some of these technical issues. In this work, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel strain sensor is fabricated by incorporating a conductive polymer Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) into a mechanically robust poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/ poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) double network (DN) hydrogel. The as-prepared hydrogel sensor could span a wide spectrum of mechanical properties by simply tuning the polymer composition and the number of freezing-thawing cycles. In addition, the dynamic hydrogen bonding interactions endow the hydrogel sensor with self-healing property and reversible adhesiveness on diverse substrates. Moreover, the hydrogel sensor shows high sensitivity (Gauge Factor from 2.21 to 3.82) and can precisely detect some subtle human motions (e.g., pulse and vocal cord vibration). This work provides useful insights into the development of conductive hydrogel-based wearable soft electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have drawn significant attention in the field of stretchable/wearable sensors due to their intrinsic stretchability, tunable conductivity, biocompatibility, multistimuli sensitivity, and self-healing ability. Recent advancements in hydrogel- and organohydrogel-based sensors, including a novel sensing mechanism, outstanding performance, and broad application scenarios, suggest the great potential of hydrogels for stretchable electronics. However, a systematic summary of hydrogel- and organohydrogel-based sensors in terms of their working principles, unique properties, and promising applications is still lacking. In this spotlight, we present recent advances in hydrogel- and organohydrogel-based stretchable sensors with four main sections: improved stability of hydrogels, fabrication and characterization of organohydrogel, working principles, and performance of different types of sensors. We particularly highlight our recent work on ultrastretchable and high-performance strain, temperature, humidity, and gas sensors based on polyacrylamide/carrageenan double network hydrogel and ethylene glycol/glycerol modified organohydrogels obtained via a facile solvent displacement strategy. The organohydrogels display higher stability (drying and freezing tolerances) and sensing performances than corresponding hydrogels. The sensing mechanisms, key factors influencing the performance, and application prospects of these sensors are revealed. Especially, we find that the hindering effect of polymer networks on the ionic transport is one of the key mechanisms applicable for all four of these kinds of sensors.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels combine the properties of both hydrogels and conductors, making them soft, flexible, and biocompatible. These properties enable them to conform to irregular surfaces, stretch and bend without losing their electrical conductivity, and interface with biological systems. Conductive hydrogels can be utilized as conductive traces, electrodes, or as a matrix for flexible electronics. Exciting applications in sensors, tissue engineering, and human-machine interaction have been demonstrated worldwide. This review comprehensively covers the progress in this field, focusing on several main aspects: functional materials, performance improvement strategies, and wearable applications in human-related areas. Furthermore, the major approaches and challenges for improving their mechanical properties, conductivity, and long-term stability are systematically summarized.
Carbon Nanotubes/Hydrophobically Associated Hydrogels as Ultrastretchable, Highly Sensitive, Stable Strain, and Pressure Sensors

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have become one of the most promising materials for skin-like sensors because of their excellent biocompatibility and mechanical flexibility. However, the limited stretchability, low toughness, and fatigue resistance lead to a narrow sensing region and insufficient durability of the hydrogel-based sensors. In this work, an extremely stretchable, highly tough, and anti-fatigue conductive nanocomposite hydrogel is prepared by integrating hydrophobic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into hydrophobically associated polyacrylamide (HAPAAm) hydrogel. In this conductive hydrogel, amphiphilic sodium dodecyl sulfate was used to ensure uniform dispersion of CNTs in the hydrogel network, and hydrophobic interactions between the hydrogel matrix and the CNT surface formed, greatly improving the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. The obtained CNTs/HAPAAm hydrogel showed excellent stretchability (ca. 3000%), toughness (3.42 MJ m-3), and great anti-fatigue property. Moreover, it exhibits both high tensile strain sensitivity in the wide strain ranges (gauge factor = 4.32, up to 1000%) and high linear sensitivity (0.127 kPa-1) in a large-pressure region within 0-50 kPa. The CNTs/HAPAAm hydrogel-based sensors can sensitively and stably detect full-range human activities (e.g., elbow rotation, finger bending, swallowing motion, and pronouncing) and handwriting, demonstrating the CNTs/HAPAAm hydrogel's potential as the wearable strain and pressure sensors for flexible devices.

Abstract:A stretchable conductive Janus hydrogel with controllable porous structures is developed for highly sensitive monitoring of human motion. The Janus porous structure of the hydrogel is fabricated using patterned single‐layer droplets produced by microfluidics as pore‐forming templates. The hydrogel possess dual‐crosslinked polymeric networks to achieve good stretchability (480%), which allows fully cover the stretching range of human skin (usually <200%). Meanwhile, the hydrogel possess controllable Janus porous structures with local strain/stress enhancement to achieve high sensitivity (GF = 5.2) for strain‐sensing. The Janus hydrogel shows fast response for stretching (175 ms) and recovery (170 ms), and good durability (200 cycles at 50% strain). The conductive Janus hydrogel with high sensitivity and good mechanical properties are promising for developing soft wearable sensors in fields such as human health monitoring and human motion detection.

Abstract:Flexible sensors have shown great potential in remote health monitoring, body movements track, electronic skin, human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. Hydrogels possess exceptional stretchability, flexibility and biocompatibility that that render them appealing candidates for wearable flexible sensors. Among them, considerable efforts have been devoted to developing conductive hydrogels to achieve multifunctional wearable sensing through using functional groups/additives/nanofillers to modify the hydrogel network in recent years. This review summarizes recent advances of applications of hydrogels in flexible wearable sensors, such as sweat sampling and flexible electrodes, strain/pressure sensors and touch panels, focuses on the multifunctional conductive hydrogels-based flexible wearable sensors with self-healing, self-adhesion, or anti-freezing capabilities. A brief introduction to representative synthesis methods and strategies of conductive hydrogels is also presented. In the end, we also provide a personal perspective on the future development, and address the remaining challenges in the commercialization of conductive hydrogels-based multifunctional flexible wearable sensors.

Abstract:Electronic skin is driving the next generation of cutting-edge wearable electronic products due to its good wearability and high accuracy of information acquisition. However, it remains a challenge to fulfill the requirements on detecting full-range human activities with existing flexible strain sensors. Herein, highly stretchable, sensitive, and multifunctional flexible strain sensors based on MXene- (Ti 3 C 2 T x -) composited poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone double-network hydrogels were prepared. The uniformly distributed hydrophilic MXene nanosheets formed a three-dimensional conductive network throughout the hydrogel, endowing the flexible sensor with high sensitivity. The strong interaction between the double-network hydrogel matrix and MXene greatly improved the mechanical properties of the hydrogels. The resulting nanocomposited hydrogels featured great tensile performance (2400%), toughness, and resilience. Particularly, the as-prepared flexible pressure sensor revealed ultrahigh sensitivity (10.75 kPa -1 ) with a wide response range (0-61.5 kPa), fast response (33.5 ms), and low limit of detection (0.87 Pa). Moreover, the hydrogel-based flexible sensors, with high sensitivity and durability, could be employed to monitor full-range human motions and assembled into some aligned devices for subtle pressure detection, providing enormous potential in facial expression and phonation recognition, handwriting verification, healthy diagnosis, and wearable electronics.

Abstract:Ion-conductive hydrogel sensors have attracted great research interests for applications in wearable devices, electronic skins, and implantable sensors, but most such sensors are fragile, with low conductivity and sensitivity. This study reports on novel ion-conductive double network hydrogels with a cross-linked helical structure, hydrophobic association, and metal-ion coordination. The helical κ-carrageenan first network and the second network cross-linked by Pluronic F127 diacrylate micelles and tridentate Fe3+–COO– coordination work synergistically to show the tensile strength of 2.7 MPa, fracture strain of 1400%, and tensile toughness of 9.82 MJ m–3 and fatigue resistance against cyclic loadings with high strains. The hydrogels show an ion conductivity of 1.15 S m–1, a strain sensitivity of up to 2.8, and a pressure sensitivity of 0.33 kPa–1. Sensor arrays fabricated from the conductive hydrogels provide an in-plane detection of pressures less than 200 Pa. Abstract:Conductive hydrogels, characterized by their excellent conductivity and flexibility, have attracted widespread attention and research in the field of flexible wearable sensors. This paper reviews the application progress, related challenges, and future prospects of conductive hydrogels in flexible wearable sensors. Initially, the basic properties and classifications of conductive hydrogels are introduced. Subsequently, this paper discusses in detail the specific applications of conductive hydrogels in different sensor applications, such as motion detection, medical diagnostics, electronic skin, and human–computer interactions. Finally, the application prospects and challenges are summarized. Overall, the exceptional performance and multifunctionality of conductive hydrogels make them one of the most important materials for future wearable technologies. However, further research and innovation are needed to overcome the challenges faced and to realize the wider application of conductive hydrogels in flexible sensors.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogel has recently garnered significant research attention due to its potential applications in the field of wearable and flexible electronics. Nonetheless, the integration of multifunctional and synergistic advantages, including reliable electronic properties, high swelling capacity, exceptional mechanical characteristics, and self-adhesive properties, presents an ongoing challenge. In this study, we have developed an ionic conductive hydrogel through the co-polymerization of 4-Acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) and sodium acrylate using UV curing technology. The hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, superior swelling capacity, and remarkable self-adhesive attributes. The hydrogel serves as a highly sensitive strain sensor, enabling precise monitoring of both substantial and subtle human motions. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrates the capability to adhere to human skin, functioning as a human-machine interface for the detection of physiological signals, including electromyogram (EMG) signals, with low interfacial impedance. This work is anticipated to yield a new class of stretchable and conductive materials with diverse potential applications, ranging from flexible sensors and wearable bio-electronics to contributions in the field of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:The construction of a surface-wrinkled ionic conductive hydrogel with highly stretchable and healable properties for a skin-inspired pressure sensor is desirable yet challenging. Here, a stretching/competitively-coordinating/releasing (SCR) strategy is presented for preparing a self-buckled polyacrylamide/alginate hydrogel (SPAH). Due to its high stretchability, excellent ionic conductivity and programmable wrinkled surfaces, the SPAH can readily work as an ionic conductor in a healable skin-inspired pressure sensor with adaptability and multifunctionality, achieving a wide pressure response range (25–20000 Pa), high sensitivity towards strain (3.19 kPa−1), low detection limit (<25 Pa) and excellent durability (>1400 cycles). As a proof-of-concept, a wearable SPAH pressure sensor can adequately monitor finger bending, knee flexion, speaking and breathing, showing high potentials in full-range and sophisticated motion monitoring across the applications involving human-machine interfaces, soft robotics, and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:Stretchable and flexible sensors attached onto the surface of the human body can perceive external stimuli, thus attracting extensive attention due to their lightweight, low modulus, low cost, high flexibility, and stretchability. Recently, a myriad of efforts have been devoted to improving the performance and functionality of wearable sensors. Herein, this review focuses on recent remarkable advancements in the development of flexible and stretchable sensors. Multifunction of these wearable sensors is realized by incorporating some desired features (e.g., self-healing, self-powering, linearity, and printing). Next, focusing on the characteristics of carbon nanomaterials, nanostructured metal, conductive polymer, or their hybrid composites, two major strategies (e.g., materials that stretch and structures that stretch) and diverse design approaches have been developed to achieve highly flexible and stretchable electrodes. Strain sensing performances of recently reported sensors indicate that the appropriate choice of geometric engineering as well as intrinsically stretchable materials is essential for high-performance strain sensing. Finally, some important directions and challenges of a fully sensor-integrated wearable platform are proposed to realize their potential applications for human motion monitoring and human-machine interfaces.
