Abstract:In 1984 Bannai and Ito conjectured that there are finitely many distance-regular graphs with fixed valencies greater than two. In a series of papers, they showed that this is the case for valency 3 and 4, and also for the class of bipartite distance-regular graphs. To prove their result, they used a theorem concerning the intersection array of a triangle-free distance-regular graph, a theorem that was subsequently generalized in 1994 by Suzuki to distance-regular graphs whose intersection numbers satisfy a certain simple condition. More recently, Koolen and Moulton derived a more general version of Bannai and Ito’s theorem which they used to show that the Bannai–Ito conjecture holds for valencies 5, 6 and 7, and which they subsequently extended to triangle-free distance-regular graphs in order to show that the Bannai–Ito conjecture holds for such graphs with valencies 8, 9 and 10. In this paper, we extend the theorems of Bannai and Ito, and Koolen and Moulton to arbitrary distance-regular graphs.

Abstract:In their 1984 book "Algebraic Combinatorics I: Association Schemes'', Bannai and Ito conjectured that there are only finitely many distance-regular graphs with fixed valency at least three. In a series of papers they showed that their conjecture holds for the class of bipartite distance-regular graphs. In this paper we prove that the Bannai-Ito conjecture also holds for the more general class of regular near polygons, and for the class of geodetic distance-regular graphs.

Abstract:Covering arrays find important application in software and hardware interaction testing. For practical applications it is useful to determine or bound the minimum number of rows, CAN$(t,k,v)$, in a covering array for given values of the parameters $t,k$ and $v$. Asymptotic upper bounds for CAN$(t,k,v)$ have earlier been established using the Stein-Lovász-Johnson strategy and the Lovász local lemma. A series of improvements on these bounds is developed in this paper. First an estimate for the discrete Stein-Lovász-Johnson bound is derived. Then using alteration, the Stein-Lovász-Johnson bound is improved upon, leading to a two-stage construction algorithm. Bounds from the Lovász local lemma are improved upon in a different manner, by examining group actions on the set of symbols. Two asymptotic upper bounds on CAN$(t,k,v)$ are established that are tighter than the known bounds. A two-stage bound is derived that employs the Lovász local lemma and the conditional Lovász local lemma distribution.

Abstract:We find an inequality involving the eigenvalues of a regular graph; equality holds if and only if the graph is strongly regular. We apply this inequality to the first subconstituents of a distance-regular graph and obtain a simple proof of the fundamental bound for distance-regular graphs, discovered by Jurisic, Koolen and Terwilliger. Using this we show that for distance-regular graphs with certain intersection arrays, the first subconstituent graphs are strongly regular. From these results we prove the nonexistence of distance-regular graphs associated to 20 feasible intersection arrays from the book Distance-Regular Graphs by Brouwer, Cohen and Neumaier [3]. Towards Strong Reverse Minkowski-type Inequalities for Lattices

Abstract:We present a natural reverse Minkowski-type inequality for lattices, which gives upper bounds on the number of lattice points in a Euclidean ball in terms of sublattice determinants, and conjecture its optimal form. The conjecture exhibits a surprising wealth of connections to various areas in mathematics and computer science, including a conjecture motivated by integer programming by Kannan and Lovász (Annals of Math. 1988), a question from additive combinatorics asked by Green, a question on Brownian motions asked by Saloff-Coste (Colloq. Math. 2010), a theorem by Milman and Pisier from convex geometry (Ann. Probab. 1987), worst-case to average-case reductions in lattice-based cryptography, and more. We present these connections, provide evidence for the conjecture, and discuss possible approaches towards a proof. Our main technical contribution is in proving that our conjecture implies the $\ell_2$ case of the Kannan and Lovász conjecture. The proof relies on a novel convex relaxation for the covering radius, and a rounding procedure for based on "uncrossing" lattice subspaces.

Covering Distributive Lattices by Intervals

Abstract:We consider the convex subset $[A,B]$ of all elements between two levels $A$ and $B$ of a finite distributive lattice, as a union of (or covered by) intervals $[a,b]$. A 1988 result of Voigt and Wegener shows that for such convex subsets of finite Boolean lattices, covers using $\max(|A|,|B|)$ intervals (the minimum possible number) exist. In 1992 Bouchemakh and Engel pointed out that this result holds more generally for finite products of finite chains. In this paper we show that covers of size $\max(|A|,|B|)$ exist for $[A,B]$ when $A$ is the set of atoms and $B$ the set of coatoms of any finite distributive lattice. This is a consequence of a more general result for finite partially ordered sets. We also speculate on the situation when other levels of finite distributive lattices are considered, and prove a couple of theorems supporting these speculations.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ denote a distance-regular graph with diameter $D\geq 3$. Jurišić and Vidali conjectured that if $\Gamma$ is tight with classical parameters $(D,b,\alpha,\beta)$, $b\geq 2$, then $\Gamma$ is not locally the block graph of an orthogonal array nor the block graph of a Steiner system. In the present paper, we prove this conjecture and, furthermore, extend it from the following aspect. Assume that for every triple of vertices $x, y, z$ of $\Gamma$, where $x$ and $y$ are adjacent, and $z$ is at distance $2$ from both $x$ and $y$, the number of common neighbors of $x$, $y$, $z$ is constant. We then show that if $\Gamma$ is locally the block graph of an orthogonal array (resp. a Steiner system) with smallest eigenvalue $-m$, $m\geq 3$, then the intersection number $c_2$ is not equal to $m^2$ (resp. $m(m+1)$). Using this result, we prove that if a tight distance-regular graph $\Gamma$ is not locally the block graph of an orthogonal array or a Steiner system, then the valency (and hence diameter) of $\Gamma$ is bounded by a function in the parameter $b=b_1/(1+\theta_1)$, where $b_1$ is the intersection number of $\Gamma$ and $\theta_1$ is the second largest eigenvalue of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:In this paper we study distance-regular graphs with intersection array (1){(t+1)s,ts,(t-1)(s+1-@j);1,2,(t+1)@j} where s,t,@j are integers satisfying t=2 and 1@?@j@?s. Geometric distance-regular graphs with diameter three and c"2=2 have such an intersection array. We first show that if a distance-regular graph with intersection array (1) exists, then s is bounded above by a function in t. Using this we show that for a fixed integer t=2, there are only finitely many distance-regular graphs of order (s,t) with smallest eigenvalue -t-1, diameter D=3 and intersection number c"2=2 except for Hamming graphs with diameter three. Moreover, we will show that if a distance-regular graph with intersection array (1) for t=2 exists then (s,@j)=(15,9). As Gavrilyuk and Makhnev (2013) [9] proved that the case (s,@j)=(15,9) does not exist, this enables us to finish the classification of geometric distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue -3, diameter D=3 and c"2=2 which was started by the first author (Bang, 2013) [1].

Abstract:Let Gamma be a distance-regular graph with classical parameters (D,b,alpha,beta) and b >= 1. It is known that Gamma is Q-polynomial with respect to theta 1, where theta(1)=(b1)/(b)-1 is the second largest eigenvalue of Gamma. And it was shown that for a distance-regular graph Gamma with classical parameters (D,b,alpha,beta), D >= 5 and b >= 1, if a1 is large enough compared to b and Gamma is thin, then the intersection number c(2) of Gamma is bounded above by a function of b. In this paper, we obtain a similar result without the assumption that the graph Gamma is thin.

Abstract:Given a graph G=(V,E) of maximum degree Δ, denoting by d(x,y) the distance in G between nodes x,y∈V , an L(3,2,1) -labeling of G is an assignment l from V to the set of non-negative integers such that |l(x)−l(y)|≥3 if x and y are adjacent, |l(x)−l(y)|≥2 if d(x,y)=2 , and |l(x)−l(y)|≥1 if d(x,y)=3 , for all x and y in V . The L(3,2,1) -number λ(G) is the smallest positive integer such that G admits an L(3,2,1) -labeling with labels from {0,1,...,λ(G)} . In this paper, the L(3,2,1) -number of certain planar graphs is determined, proving that it is linear in Δ, although the general upper bound for the L(3,2,1) -number of planar graphs is quadratic in Δ.

Abstract:In this paper, we will show that there does not exist a distance-regular graph $$\Gamma $$ with intersection array $$\{80, 54,12; 1, 6, 60\}$$. We first show that a local graph $$\Delta $$ of $$\Gamma $$ does not contain a coclique with 5 vertices, and then we prove that the graph $$\Gamma $$ is geometric by showing that $$\Delta $$ consists of 4 disjoint cliques with 20 vertices. Then we apply a result of Koolen and Bang to the graph $$\Gamma $$, and we could obtain that there is no such a distance-regular graph.

Abstract:Covering arrays are generalizations of orthogonal arrays that have been widely studied and are used in software testing. The probabilistic method has been employed to derive upper bounds on the sizes of minimum covering arrays and give asymptotic upper bounds that are logarithmic on the number of columns of the array. This corresponds to test suites with a desired level of coverage of the parameter space where we guarantee the number of test cases is logarithmic on the number of parameters of the system. In this paper, we study variable strength covering arrays, a generalization of covering arrays that uses a hypergraph to specify the sets of columns where coverage is required; (standard) covering arrays is the special case where coverage is required for all sets of columns of a fixed size $t$, its strength. We use the probabilistic method to obtain upper bounds on the number of rows of a variable strength covering array, given in terms of parameters of the hypergraph. We then compare this upper bound with another one given by a density-based greedy algorithm on different types of hypergraph such as $t$-designs, cyclic consecutive hypergraphs, planar triangulation hypergraphs, and a more specific hypergraph given by a clique of higher strength on top of a "base strength". The conclusions are dependent on the class of hypergraph, and we discuss specific characteristics of the hypergraphs which are more amenable to using different versions of the Lovász local lemma.
