Abstract: Let $A_1,\ldots,A_n$ be finite subsets of an additive abelian group $G$ with $|A_1|=\cdots=|A_n|\ge2$. Concerning the two new kinds of restricted sumsets $$L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_1\in A_1,\ldots,a_n\in A_n,\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n\}$$ and $$C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_i\in A_i\ (1\le i\le n),\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n,\ \text{and}\ a_n\not=a_1\}$$ recently introduced by the second author, when $G$ is the additive group of a field we obtain lower bounds for $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ and $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ via the polynomial method. Moreover, when $G$ is torsion-free and $A_1=\cdots=A_n$, we determine completely when $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ or $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ attains its lower bound.

Abstract:Let F be a field of characteristic p and let P(x)∈F[x] be a polynomial of degree m>0. Let A1,…,An be finite subsets of F with |An|=k>m(n−1) and |Ai+1|−|Ai|∈{0,1} for i=1,…,n−1. If p=0 or p>(k−1)n−(m+1)(n2), then for the restricted sumsetS={a1+⋯+an:a1∈A1,…,an∈An,andP(ai)≠P(aj)ifi≠j}we have |S|⩾1+(k−1)n−(m+1)(n2). This extends the Erdös–Heilbronn conjecture posed in 1964 and confirmed in 1994.

Abstract:Let Zp = Z/pZ stand for the field of all residue classes modulo prime p. In 1964 P. Erdös and H. Heilbronn (cf. [EH] and [Gu]) conjectured that for each nonempty subset A of Zp there are at least min{p, 2|A| − 3} residue classes modulo p that can be written as the sum of two distinct elements of A. We show that ifG is torsion-free or elementary abelian, then |C|≥|A|+|B|−|S|−m. We also prove that |C|≥|A|+|B|−2|S|−m if the torsion subgroup ofG is cyclic. Abstract:We prove an asymptotically tight lower bound on $|A+\lambda A|$ for $A\subset \mathbb{C}$ and algebraic integer $\lambda$. The proof combines strong version of Freiman's theorem, structural theorem on dense subsets of a hypercubic lattice and a generalisation of the continuous result on tight bound for the measure of $K+\tau K$ for a compact subset $K\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ of unit Lebesgue measure and a fixed linear operator $\tau\colon\mathbb{R}^d\to \mathbb{R}^d$, obtained in our previous work.

Abstract:For two relatively prime square-free positive integers $a$ and $b$, we study integers of the form $a p+b P_{2}$ and give a new lower bound for it, where $a p$ and $b P_{2}$ are both square-free, $p$ denotes a prime, and $P_{2}$ has at most two prime factors. We also consider some special cases where $p$ is small, $p$ and $P_2$ are within short intervals, $p$ and $P_2$ are within arithmetical progressions and a Goldbach-type upper bound result. Our new results generalize and improve the previous results.

Abstract:We prove new lower bounds on the maximum size of subsets $A\subseteq \{1,\dots,N\}$ or $A\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^n$ not containing three-term arithmetic progressions. In the setting of $\{1,\dots,N\}$, this is the first improvement upon a classical construction of Behrend from 1946 beyond lower-order factors (in particular, it is the first quasipolynomial improvement). In the setting of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ for a fixed prime $p$ and large $n$, we prove a lower bound of $(cp)^n$ for some absolute constant $c>1/2$ (for $c = 1/2$, such a bound can be obtained via classical constructions from the 1940s, but improving upon this has been a well-known open problem).

Abstract:Let $A$ and $B$ be sets of $k\ge5$ elements in $F=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ the field with $p>2k-2$ elements. We denote by $A\dot{+}B$ the set of different elements of $F$ that can be written in the form $a+b$, where $a\in A$, $b\in B$, $a\neq b$. The number of elements of this set is at least $2k-3$. Károlyi showed that, except from some particular cases, The equality can only occur if $A = B$ and $A$ is an arithmetic progression with non zero difference. We prove that in the case that $|A\dot{+}B| = 2k - 2$ and $|A|=|B|$ the equality $A=B$ holds.

Let $$p^l = {\rm max} \{|Z(C_G (g)):Z(G)| : g \in G \setminus Z(G)\},$$ $$p^b = {\rm max} \{|cl(g)| : g \in G \setminus Z(G) \},$$ and $p^a = |A:Z(G)|$. Then we show that $a \ge n/(b+l)$.

Abstract:In this article, we studied the inverse Erdős-Heilbronn problem with the restricted sumset from two components $A$ and $B$ that are not necessarily the same. We give a completely elementary proof for the problem in $\mathbb{Z}$ and some partial results that contributes to the elementary proof of the problem in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, avoiding the usage of the powerful polynomial method and the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.

Abstract:The amount of hyperplanes that are needed in order to cover the Boolean cube has been studied in various contexts. Linial and Radhakrishnan introduced the notion of essential covers. An essential cover is a collection of hyperplanes that form a minimal cover of the vertices of the hypercube, and every coordinate is influential in at least one of the hyperplanes. Linial and Radhakrishnan proved using algebraic tools that every essential cover of the n -cube must be of size at least . We devise a stronger lower bound method, and show that the size of every essential cover is at least . This result has implications in proof complexity, because essential covers have been used to prove lower bounds for several proof systems.

Abstract:For a set $A$ of nonnegative integers, let $R_2(A,n)$ denote the number of solutions to $n=a+a'$ with $a,a'\in A$, $a<a'$. Let $A_0$ be the Thue-Morse sequence and $B_0=\mathbb{N}\setminus A_0$. Let $A\subset \mathbb{N}$ and $N$ be a positive integer such that $R_2(A,n)=R_2(\mathbb{N}\setminus A,n)$ for all $n\geq 2N-1$. Previously, the first author proved that if $|A\cap A_0|=+\infty$ and $|A\cap B_0|=+\infty$, then $R_2(A,n)\geq \frac{n+3}{56N-52}-1$ for all $n\geq 1$. In this paper, we prove that the above lower bound is nearly best possible. We also get some other results.

Abstract:A proof is given of a general theorem showing that for certain sets W a certain topological lower bound is valid in the algebraic computation tree model, even if the inputs are restricted to be integers. The theorem can be used to prove tight lower bounds for the integral-constrained form of many basic problems, such as element distinctness, set disjointness, and finding the convex hull. Through further transformations it leads to lower bounds for problems such as the integer max gap and closest pair of a simple polygon.
