Abstract:Suppose that $k\geq 2$ and $A$ is a non-empty subset of a finite abelian group $G$ with $|G|>1$. Then the cardinality of the restricted sumset $$ k^\wedge A:=\{a_1+\cdots+a_k:\,a_1,\ldots,a_k\in A,\ a_i\neq a_j\text{ for }i\neq j\} $$ is at least $$ \min\{p(G), k|A|-k^2+1\}, $$ where $p(G)$ denotes the least prime divisor of $|G|$.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is, in a finite abelian group \(G\), for any non - empty subset \(A\), to find the minimum cardinality (i.e., the number of elements) of the restricted sumset \(k\wedge A\). Specifically, the authors hope to prove the following conclusion:
**Theorem 1.1**: Suppose \(G\) is a finite abelian group and \(|G|> 1\). For any non - empty subset \(A\subseteq G\), the cardinality of the restricted sumset \(k\wedge A\) satisfies:
\[|k\wedge A|\geq\min\{p(G), k|A|-k^{2} + 1\}\]
where \(p(G)\) represents the smallest prime factor of \(|G|\).
The background of this problem is the classical Cauchy - Davenport theorem and its generalization in finite abelian groups. The Cauchy - Davenport theorem states that for any non - empty subsets \(A, B\subseteq\mathbb{Z}_{p}\) (where \(p\) is a prime number), we have:
\[|A + B|\geq\min\{p,|A|+|B|- 1\}\]
The Kneser theorem further extends this result to any finite abelian group \(G\):
\[|A + B|\geq\min\{p(G),|A|+|B|-1\}\]
In addition, Erdős and Heilbronn conjectured that for any prime number \(p\) and non - empty subset \(A\subseteq\mathbb{Z}_{p}\), we have:
\[|2\wedge A|\geq\min\{p, 2|A|-3\}\]
This conjecture was later proved by Dias da Silva and Hamidoune, and they further proved a more general result:
\[|k\wedge A|\geq\min\{p, k|A|-k^{2}+1\}\]
The main contribution of this paper is to generalize the above results to any finite abelian group \(G\), thus obtaining Theorem 1.1.
