Abstract:TiO2-ZrO2 (Ti-Zr) carrier was prepared by a co-precipitation method and 1 wt. % V2O5 and 0.2 CeO2 (the Mole ratio of Ce to Ti-Zr) was impregnated to obtain the V2O5-CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3. The transient activity tests and the in situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) analyses were employed to explore the NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction) mechanism systematically, and by designing various conditions of single or mixing feeding gas and pre-treatment ways, a possible pathway of NOx reduction was proposed. It was found that NH3 exhibited a competitive advantage over NO in its adsorption on the catalyst surface, and could form an active intermediate substance of -NH2. More acid sites and intermediate reaction species (-NH2), at lower temperatures, significantly promoted the SCR activity of the V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. The presence of O2 could promote the conversion of NO to NO2, while NO2 was easier to reduce. The co-existence of NH3 and O2 resulted in the NH3 adsorption strength being lower, as compared to tests without O2, since O2 could occupy a part of the active site. Due to CeO2’s excellent oxygen storage-release capacity, NH3 adsorption was weakened, in comparison to the 1 wt. % V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. If NOx were to be pre-adsorbed in the catalyst, the formation of nitrate and nitro species would be difficult to desorb, which would greatly hinder the SCR reaction. All the findings concluded that NH3-SCR worked mainly through the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism.

Abstract:The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 was studied over poorly-crystalline W-Fe composite oxides (WaFeOx). The short-range order present within the W-O-Fe structure was found to be responsible for the excellent SCR activity, in which the strong atomic-level interaction between Fe and W atoms promoted the formation of both Lewis and Bronsted acidity. The W-O-Fe structure existed as amorphous overlayers, approximately 2 nm thick over the surface of crystalline particles after high-temperature aging as shown by high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (lAADF-STEM). After treatment at 800 degrees C for 5 h, the WaFeOx catalysts still showed almost 100% NO conversion in the range 300-450 degrees C with 100% N-2 selectivity, despite the loss in surface area. This resistance to the impacts of high temperature ageing guarantees high activity of SCR catalysts which often suffer during high-temperature excursions as in the case of diesel exhaust due to diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration.

Abstract:Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from diesel engines induces various environmental problems. Selective catalytic reduction with NH3 is an efficient technology for NOx emissions reduction. In this study, copper ion exchanged zeolite catalysts (Cu-X) were prepared from blast furnace slag. Cu-X showed excellent catalytic activity and SO2 tolerance with 84% NO conversion in the presence of 50 ppm SO2. Excessive Cu inhibited the SO2 chemisorption on the active site of zeolite X to some extent. In situ DRIFTS showed that the increase of Cu exchanged amount affected the quantity distribution of bridged hydroxyl group (Si-OH-Al), terminal hydroxyl group (SiOH) and Cun+-L, and the different reaction paths and barriers of the active centers to the chemical adsorption of SO2 led to the different sulfur resistance. DFT kinetic adsorption simulation module was used to simulate the adsorption of gas components on γ -Cu-X catalyst and the transition state of active center. The results showed that the amount of Cu in the adsorption system affected the average local chemical potential during the reaction process, leading to the change of the adsorption heat of SO2 gas in the component of γ-Cu-X catalyst, and the change of the load of SO2 in the Cu-X catalyst cell.

Abstract:A general review is given over the research advances in SCR of NOx with ammonia or hydrocarbons over transition metal-based zeolite catalysts in last 10 years.In NH3-SCR system,Cu and Fe based zeolite catalysts are particularly addressed,the deactivation reasons of these catalysts is discussed as well.In HC-SCR system,the effects of different metals,zeolite types,reducing agents,water vapor,sulfur dioxide on the activity of catalysts are summarized,and the well accepted reaction mechanism of HC-SCR is introduced.The future research directions for SCR over zeolite-based catalyst are also included.

Abstract:Cu-based SAPO-18, SAPO-18/34 intergrowth and SAPO-34 zeolites were applied for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by ammonia (NH3-SCR) catalysts. Comprehensive characterization results revealed that the SAPO-18/34 with higher amount and strength of acid sites could facilitate the generation of more isolated copper ions (Cu2+ and Cu+) and suppress the formation of CuOx, which might account for the fact that intergrowth crystal structure of Cu-SAPO-18/34 exhibited higher fresh NH3-SCR activity, more robust hydrothermal durability and better SO2-resistance ability than that Cu-SAPO-18 and Cu-SAPO-34. In situ DRIFTS results provided the formation of reaction intermediates, such as -NH2, NH4+, NO3-, NO2-, etc. Eley-Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) reaction mechanisms were both involved in Cu-based SAPO-18 and SAPO-18/34 intergrowth zeolites, but the L-H mechanism dominated the NH3-SCR reaction, in addition, Cu-SAPO-34 only followed "L-H" mechanism.

Abstract:Metal-exchanged CHA-type (SAPO-34 and SSZ-13) zeolites are promising catalysts for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3. However, an understanding of the process at the molecular level is still limited, which hinders the identification of its mechanism and the design of more efficient zeolite catalysts. In this work, modeling the reaction over Cu-SAPO-34, a periodic density functional theory (DFT) study of NH3-SCR was performed using the hybrid functional (HSE06) with the consideration of van der Waals (vdW) interactions. A mechanism with a low N-N coupling barrier is proposed to account for the activation of NO. The redox cycle of Cu2+ and Cu+, which is crucial for the SCR process, is identified with detailed analyses. In addition, the decomposition of NH2NO is shown to readily occur on the Bronsted acid site by a hydrogen push-pull mechanism, confirming the collective efforts of Bronsted acid and Lewis acid (Cu2+) sites. The special electronic and structural properties of Cu-SAPO-34 are demonstrated to play an essential role in the reaction, which may have general implications on the understanding of zeolite catalysis.

Abstract:Selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) is one of the most efficient technologies to remove NOx emissions. The copper ion-exchanged zeolites with broad temperature windows and high N-2 selectivity are very promising for this process. In this work, we synthesized a series of microfibrous-structured Cu-ZSM-5/Al-fiber catalysts for SCR reaction by changing the Si/Al molar ratios. The in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) of NH3 adsorption results show that the Cu-ZSM-5/Al-fiber catalysts with higher Si/Al molar ratios have higher NH3 adsorption capacity. The subsequent NO adsorption results show that the amount of adsorbed bridged nitrates species is in accordance with the enhanced NOx degradation activity. At moderate temperature, Cu-ZSM-5/Al-fiber catalyst shows better NH3-SCR performance under higher gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), indicating microstructured Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts are more active at high-throughout conditions due to the enhanced mass transfer.
Revealing the Mechanisms of NH3 Adsorption and Reactions in Catalytic NOx Reduction over Cux/CHA Zeolites by in Situ DRIFTS Spectroscopy

Abstract:Adsorption and activation of NH3 on Cu-SSZ-13 were essential for NOx removal, however, their important role at the molecular level remains unclear. In this work, the Al-rich Cu/SSZ-13 (Cux/CHA) catalysts were synthesized by the incipient-wetness impregnation method, and the NH3-SCR performance was investigated. It is found that high Cu content promoted the formation of Z-[Cu(OH)]+ and CuOx particles, enhanced the adsorption capacity of NOx, and increased the intra-zeolite oxolation process in the Cux/CHA catalysts. In situ DRIFTS results showed that the Z-[Cu(OH)(NH3)x]+(x<3) exhibited analogous properties to B-NH4+, but it would convert to Z-[Cu(OH)(NH3)3]+ with increasing NH3 adsorption time and exhibit L-NH3 properties. Those findings could provide a new insight into understanding the adsorption and activation of NH3 in low-temperature reactions, as well as new ideas for improving NOx conversion during cold start.

Abstract:Cu-exchanged small-pore SSZ-39 and SAPO-18 (Cu-AEI) zeolite catalysts have attracted more and more attention due to the high NH3-SCR performance and remarkable hydrothermal stability, which are crucial for the control of NOx from the diesel exhaust. This paper comprehensively reviews the research progress on Cu-AEI zeolites for NH3-SCR of NOx, encompassing the NH3-SCR reaction mechanism, hydrothermal aging mechanism, chemical poisoning mechanism, multi-route synthesis method, and performance optimization method. Our objective is to provide a fundamental understanding of the NH3-SCR reaction over Cu-AEI zeolite catalysts and highlight the relationship between the structure and the catalytic performance, which would shed light on the design of more highly active and durable Cu-AEI zeolite catalyst for the NH3-SCR of NOx. Finally, the challenges and prospects for Cu-exchanged small-pore zeolites have been proposed, which would promote the practical application of these catalysts to meet the strict emission regulations in the future.

Abstract:Zeolite X was used as support of copper catalyst (Cu/X) for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxide (NO) with ammonia (NH3). Modulated excitation in situ/operando infrared (IR) spectroscopy and phase-sensitive detection (PSD) were applied to study the reaction intermediates that formed on the Cu/X during transient experiments. Changing the gas concentration to periodically create unsteady conditions enabled the selective extraction of the dynamic species that were directly involved in the reaction. The IR results showed that only Lewis acid sites (LX) existed on zeolite X,and Bronsted acid sites (B) and extra Lewis acid sites (LCu) were generated after Cu loading. The transient experiment results indicated that the SCR reactions on Cu/X obeys the Eley - Rideal (E - R) mechanism, in which NH3 is first adsorbed on the LX and LCu sites (LX-NH3, LCu-NH3) and then moved to the B sites (B-NH3), where it reacted with gas-phase NO to form NH2NO intermediate, which finally decomposed into N2 and H2O. Moreover, it is found that the NH3 adsorbed on LCu and B sites exhibits stronger reactivity than that on the LX sites.

Abstract:The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 at high temperature (T > 500 degrees C) usually has low conversion efficiency due to the undesired NH3 over-oxidation. To suppress the oxidation of NH3 to NOx we proposed a Fe-exchanged zeolite catalyst with the modification of Ni and W for the NH3-SCR process, which was investigated in a wide temperature range (200-850 degrees C). It was found that the NH3 over-oxidation was significantly suppressed on the Fe-Ni-W trimetallic catalyst, leading to an improvement in the SCR performance. The catalyst characterizations suggest that the thermal tolerance of the acidity sites was enhanced and the active species in the multi-metal combined catalyst showed a higher valence state. To further identify the roles of active sites during NH3 oxidation, dehydrogenation, and transformation into intermediates, time-resolved in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations were conducted. We found that the enhanced activity of catalysts at high temperature was ascribed to the Bronsted acid sites on the ZSM-5 lattice and extra-framework exchanged metal center that was affected by the topology confinement from zeolite. A high activation barrier for the rate-determining step of the NH3 oxidation process was observed on these active sites, thus inhibiting the oxidation side reaction. The findings provide rational strategies to modify mononuclear sites and synergetic restriction effect of multi-metal centers over zeolite-based catalysts for effective SCR at high temperatures.

Research on Performance and Mechanism of the NH3-SCR Reaction over Fly Ash-derived Mn-Ce/Zeolite X

Abstract:Zeolite X was synthesized from fly ash under optimized conditions, which was supported with Mn, Ce, and Mn-Ce respectively. Fly ash-derived zeolite X catalysts exhibited similar catalytic performance as compared with the commercial zeolite X catalyst. XRD, N2 adsorption, SEM, XPS, and H2-TPR were used to investigate the relationship among the structure, physicochemical properties, and catalytic activities of the catalysts. Finally, the mechanism of NH3-SCR reaction on Mn-Ce/zeolite X was systematically performed by using diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The characterization results showed that the amorphous structure and good dispersion between Mn and Ce on the surface of the zeolite changed the electronic properties of the active components, improved its low-temperature catalytic activity, brought it characteristics of Mn and Ce at the same time, and broaden the reaction temperature range. The NO conversion rate of Mn-Ce-FX catalyst remained above 80% at 200 & DEG;C-300 & DEG;C. From DRIFTS we suggest that Eley-Rideal mechanism and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism are simultaneously carried out on the catalyst surface. According to the FTIR results, the Eley-Rideal mechanism has a great influence on the reaction below 250 & DEG;C, and the Bronsted acid sites adsorb a large amount of NH3, resulting in an excellent low-temperature activity. When above 250 & DEG;C, Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism plays a dominant role. The nitrates on the surface gradually convert to bidentate nitrates, impeding the SCR reaction, could be one of the reasons for reducing the high-temperature activity.

Abstract:Fe‐Cu‐SSZ‐13 catalysts were prepared by aqueous solution ion‐exchange method based on the one‐pot synthesized Cu‐SSZ‐13. The catalysts were applied to the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 and characterized by the means of XRD, UV‐Vis, EPR, XPS, NH3‐TPD, and so on. The selected Fe‐Cu‐SSZ‐13‐1 catalyst exhibited the high NO conversion (>90%) in the wide temperature range (225–625°C), which also showed good N2 selectivity and excellent hydrothermal stability. The results of XPS showed that the Cu and Fe species were in the internal and outer parts of the SSZ‐13 crystals, respectively. The results of UV‐Vis and EPR indicated that the monomeric Cu2+ ions coordinated to three oxygen atoms on the six‐ring sites and Fe monomers are the real active species in the NH3‐SCR reaction. Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3 over Cu/SSZ-13: Elucidating Dynamics of Cu Active Sites with in Situ UV–Vis Spectroscopy and DFT Calculations

Abstract:Cu/SSZ-13 is the current state-of-the-art catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NQ with NH3 (NH3-SCR) in diesel after-treatment systems. Recent investigations under in situ or operando conditions yielded rich molecular level understanding about dynamic transformations of Cu sites during reactions. However, in situ investigations aiming at the distinction of the two SCR-active Cu species in this catalyst, that is, Z(2)Cu(II) and ZCu(II)OH, are still scarce. Herein, we apply in situ UV-vis spectroscopic studies combined with theoretical calculations to investigate the two Cu sites under SCR-relevant conditions at low temperatures. We demonstrate that in the presence of O-2, two isolated ZCu(II)OH sites readily transform into a double O-bridged dicopper species with a Cu-Cu distance of 3.37 angstrom, whereas Z(2)Cu(II) species cannot undergo such a transformation. In addition, ZCu(II)OH displays stronger activity than Z(2)Cu(II) during both reduction by NH3 and NO oxidation to bidentate nitrates. Despite these differences, Z(2)Cu(II) and ZCu(II)OH sites exhibit similar spectroscopic features under both NH3 oxidation and NH3-SCR conditions. These findings demonstrate that UV-vis spectroscopy is a powerful tool to be used in situ to provide rich information on the NH3-SCR mechanism and on the rational design of Cu/SSZ-13 catalysts.
In Situ DRIFTS Investigation of NH 3 -SCR Reaction over CeO 2 /zirconium Phosphate Catalyst

Abstract:A series of ceria modified zirconium phosphate catalysts were synthesized for selective catalytic reduction of NO with ammonia (NH3-SCR). Over 98% NOx conversion and 98% N-2 selectivity were obtained by the CeO2/ZrP catalyst with 20 wt.% CeO2 loading at 250-425 degrees C. The interaction between CeO2 and zirconium phosphate enhanced the redox abilities and surface acidities of the catalysts, resulting in the improvement of NH3-SCR activity. The in situ DRIFTS results indicated that the NH3-SCR reaction over the catalysts followed both Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanisms. The amide (-NH2) groups and the NH4+ bonded to Bronsted acid sites were the important intermediates of Eley-Rideal mechanism. (c) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Reduction of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) from diesel engine exhausts is one of the key challenges in environmental protection, and can be achieved by NH3-assisted selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) using copper-exchanged chabazite zeolites (i.e. Cu-CHA, including Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-34) as catalysts. Understanding the redox chemistry of Cu-CHA in NH3-SCR catalysis is crucial for further improving the NOx reduction efficiency. Here, a series of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with different Cu ion exchange levels were prepared, thoroughly characterized by different techniques such as X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption using NH3 as a probe molecule, etc., and tested in NH3-SCR reactions under steady-state conditions. In situ studies by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), supplemented with density-functional theory calculations, provided solid evidence for the formation of ammonium ion (NH4+) intermediates resulting from the reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+ by co-adsorbed NH3 and NO molecules on Cu-SSZ-13. Catalytic relevance of the NH4+ intermediates, as demonstrated by an increase of NO conversion over Cu-SSZ-13 pre-treated in NH3/NO atmosphere, can be attributed to the formation of closely coupled Cu+/NH4+ pairs promoting the Cu+ re-oxidation and, consequently, the overall NH3-SCR process. This study thus paves a new route for improving the NH3-SCR efficiency over Cu-CHA zeolite catalyst.
