Abstract:The deposition rate and buffering capability of alkaline electroless Ni–P plating solution containing ammonium fluoride (NH4F) have been investigated. When the NH4F concentration is below 10 g L−1, the deposition rate is improved with the addition of NH4F, reaching the maximum value at 2 g L−1. The buffering capability of solutions is found to be improved with increasing NH4F concentration. Due to the improvement of buffering capability, refined and compact Ni–P coatings with homogeneous elemental distribution of P have been achieved. Therefore, both the corrosion resistance and microhardness of Ni–P coatings are significantly improved. The mechanism of NH4F improving the deposition rate and the buffering capability is discussed.

Abstract:The increasing use of Zn metal in the energy and industrial sectors necessitates a higher level of research into the zinc electrowinning process. In this work, the effects of fluoride ions (F - ) in zinc electrolyte on the cathodic kinetics and zinc product quality during zinc electrodeposition was systematically investigated via a series analysis. The results revealed that the addition of F - in the electrolyte showed a polarization effect, with an increase in the apparent cathodic exchange current density increased by 10 4 orders of magnitude, and a decrease in the zinc deposition overpotential by 46 mV at a concentration of 400 mg/L. However, F - also reduces the hydrogen evolution overvoltage, when the electrolyte contains 400 mg/L F - , the hydrogen evolution overvoltage on aluminum cathode and zinc cathode decreases by 121 mV and 97 mV, respectively. The promoted hydrogen evolution kinetics increases energy consumption and surface porosity. Additionally, F - ions corrode the Al 2 O 3 oxide film on the cathode surface, accelerating the corrosion of the aluminum cathode plate. This results in increased adhesion of zinc deposition to the damaged aluminum substrate, making it difficult to peel off.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries have drawn increasing attention due to the intrinsic safety, cost‐effectiveness and high energy density. However, parasitic reactions and non‐uniform dendrite growth on the Zn anode side impede their application. Herein, a multifunctional additive, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (NHP), is introduced to regulate uniform zinc deposition and to suppress side reactions. The results show that the NH4+ tends to be preferably absorbed on the Zn surface to form a "shielding effect" and blocks the direct contact of water with Zn. Moreover, NH4+ and (H2PO4)‐ jointly maintain pH values of the electrode‐electrolyte interface. Consequently, the NHP additive enables highly reversible Zn plating/stripping behaviors in Zn//Zn and Zn//Cu cells. Furthermore, the electrochemical performances of Zn//MnO2 full cells and Zn//active carbon (AC) capacitors are improved. This work provides an efficient and general strategy for modifying Zn plating/stripping behaviors and suppressing side reactions in mild aqueous electrolyte.
Zincophilic armor: Phytate ammonium as a multifunctional additive for enhanced performance in aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Abstract:Corrosion and the formation of by-products resulting from parasitic side reactions, as well as random dendrite growth, pose significant challenges for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). In this study, phytate ammonium is introduced into the traditional dilute Zinc sulfate electrolyte as a multi-functional additive. Leveraging the inherent zincophilic nature of the phytic anion, a protective layer is formed on the surface of the zinc anode. This layer can effectively manipulate the deposition process, mitigate parasitic reactions, and reduce the accumulation of detrimental by-products. Additionally, the competitive deposition between dissociated ammonium ions and Zn2+ promotes uniform deposition, thereby alleviating dendrite growth. Consequently, the modified electrolyte with a lower volume addition exhibits superior performance. The zinc symmetric battery demonstrates much more reversible plating/stripping, sustaining over 2000 hours at 5 mA cm-2 and 1 mA h cm-2. A high average deposition/stripping efficiency of 99.83% is achieved, indicating the significant boosting effect and practical potential of our strategy for high-performance aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Screening Ammonium‐Based Cationic Additives to Regulate Interfacial Chemistry for Aqueous Ultra‐Stable Zn Metal Anode

Abstract:The interfacial chemistry on Zn anode can be regulated by cationic additive strategy, proving as an efficient approach suppressing side reaction and maintaining Zn deposition behavior. As a proof‐of‐concept, the quaternary methylammonium cationic additive endows the Zn anode with a ultralong cycle life and high Coulombic efficiency in aqueous batteries. The interfacial dynamics and chemistry at the electrolyte/metal interface, particularly the formation of an adsorption interphase, is paramount in dictating the reversibility of Zn metal deposition and dissolution processes in battery systems. Herein, a series of different cationic ammonium‐based electrolyte additives are screened that effectively modulate the interfacial chemistry of zinc anodes in aqueous electrolytes, significantly improving the reversibility of Zn metal plating/stripping processes. As initially comprehensive investigation by combining theoretical calculation and molecular dynamic simulation, the tetramethylammonium cation, with its specific molecular structure and charge distribution, is identified as pivotal in mediating the Zn(H2O)62+ solvation shell structure at the electrode/electrolyte interface and shows the strong resistance against electrolyte corrosion as revealed by X‐ray and optical measurements. As a result, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell with optimal electrolyte lasts for over 4400 h of stable plating/stripping behaviors, and the Zn||Cu asymmetric cell stabilizes for 2100 cycles with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.8%, which is much better than the‐state‐of‐art progress. Consequently, full‐cells coupled with various cathodes showcase improved electrochemical performance, displaying high capacity‐retention and low self‐discharge behaviors. These findings offer essential insights of cationic additives in ameliorating zinc anode performance.

Abstract:Recently, zinc metal has been considered as a promising metal anode for aqueous rechargeable metal ion batteries due to its low electrochemical potential and high theoretical capacity. However, zinc metal suffers from hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and dendrite growth during plating/stripping. Here, we propose a low-cost, effective and non-toxic electrolyte additive, tetramethylammonium sulfate hydrate (TMA2SO4), as a simple cationic surfactant additive for zinc-ion batteries, to trigger the smooth Zn deposition during charging and discharging process. It is found that TMA2SO4 enable the realization of the deposition of Zn ions along the surface of zinc foil laterally without stacking and thus dendrite growth and side reactions are greatly mitigated by the electrolyte additive of TMA2SO4 even when the amount of the additive is as low as 0.25 mM. As a result, the TMA2SO4 additive induces excellent cycling stability over 1800 h at the current density of 0.5 mA cm−2 with the limited capacity of 0.5 mAh cm−2 for the Zn-Zn symmetrical cell. Moreover, the electrolyte with TMA2SO4 can well match with MnO2 cathode, which achieves the high initial capacity of 181.3 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and long-term cycling stability with the capacity retention of 98.72 % after 200 cycles for the Zn/MnO2 full cell. This work provides a general electrolyte design strategy to suppress zinc dendrite growth and side reactions to achieve long-lifespan zinc metal anodes for aqueous zinc ion batteries by electrostatic shielding effect.

Fluorinated Hybrid Interphases Enable Anti-Corrosion and Uniform Zinc Deposition for Aqueous Zinc Metal Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc (Zn) metal batteries (AZMBs) have become the most promising option for large-scale energy storage systems because they utilize low-cost, high-safety aqueous electrolytes. However, the poor reversibility of the Zn anode due to inferior stability in aqueous electrolytes has severely impeded the practical applications of AZMBs. Herein, we propose a fluorine (F)-rich hybrid artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI) to solve the above issue by coating Zn surface with fluorinated graphite and exploiting the interfacial reaction between fluorinated graphite and Zn. The interaction between the electrolyte and Zn was effectively restricted by the hydrophobic fluorinated graphite, thereby improving the corrosion resistance of the Zn anode. Furthermore, the F-rich hybrid interphase comprising fluorinated graphite and in situ generated ZnF 2 facilitated the desolvation of Zn 2+ and homogenized the Zn 2+ flux, effectively inhibiting side reactions and dendrite growth. Consequently, the symmetric cell showed stable cycle performance for over 1400 h at 10 mA cm −2 and 1 mA h cm −2 and for 200 h at 30 mA cm −2 and 10 mA h cm −2 , significantly exceeding the performance of the cell with a bare Zn anode. Moreover, the Zn/MnO 2 full cell with the MnO 2 loading of 6 mg cm −2 maintained more than 80% capacity after 2000 cycles at 1 A g −1 . This strategy for constructing fluorinated hybrid ASEI is a promising approach for the design of high-performance AZMBs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for grid-scale energy storage. However, the practical application of AZIBs is challenged by side reactions and unsatisfactory performance. Electrolyte additives are reported that can inhibit side reactions on the Zn anode and enlarge the working potential window of aqueous electrolytes. Here we propose that trace amounts of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) can facilitate long-term reversible Zn deposition in AZIBs due to perfluorinated n-octyl chains ordered orientation adsorbing on the electrode surface. Benefitting from its intrinsic surfactant properties, PFOA additives can reduce the surface tension of electrolytes and improve the wettability of electrolytes on the electrode. Symmetric Zn cells survived up to 2200 hours owing to the self-adjusting absorption layer. The molecular dynamics results show that the as-formed electronegative adsorption layer acts as a zincophilic layer to regulate the ions in the electrolyte. With adding PFOA, the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolyte enlarged to 2.1 V. Owing to the ultra-low additive usage amount, this strategy provides a facile and low-cost method to tackle common issues in AZIBs.

Dimers of silver nanospheres: facile synthesis and their use as hot spots for surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Abstract:This paper describes a simple, one-pot method that generates dimers of silver nanospheres in one step without any additional assembly steps. The dimers are consisted of single-crystal silver nanospheres approximately 30 nm in diameter and separated by a gap of 1.8 nm wide. The key to the success of this method lies in the control of colloidal stability and oxidative etching by optimizing the amount of chloride added to a polyol synthesis. The dimers provide a well-defined system for studying the hot spot phenomenon (hot spot: the gap region of a pair of strongly coupled silver or gold nanoparticles), an extremely important but poorly understood subject in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Because of the relatively small size of the silver nanospheres, only those molecules trapped in the hot spot region are expected to contribute to the detected SERS signals. By correlating SERS measurements with SEM imaging, we found that the SERS enhancement factor within the hot spot region of such a dimer was on the order of 2 x 10(7).

Abstract:Trace small molecular/nano‐colloidal multiscale electrolyte additives, zinc acetylacetonate, enable ultra‐long lifespan of zinc metal anodes (e.g., a superb cumulative plating capacity of 15 Ah cm−2). The slightly water‐soluble additives exist not only as soluble small molecules, which efficiently regulate Zn2+ ion solvation structure, but also as insoluble nano‐colloids, which in situ form a robust solid electrolyte interface film on zinc anodes. Electrolyte additives are efficient to improve the performance of aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs), yet the current electrolyte additives are limited to fully water‐soluble additives (FWAs) and water‐insoluble additives (WIAs). Herein, trace slightly water‐soluble additives (SWAs) of zinc acetylacetonate (ZAA) were introduced to aqueous ZnSO4 electrolytes. The SWA system of ZAA is composed of a FWA part and a WIA part in a dynamic manner of dissolution equilibrium. The FWA part exists as soluble small molecules, which efficiently regulate Zn2+ ion solvation structure, while the WIA part exists as insoluble nano‐colloids, which in‐situ form a thick and robust solid electrolyte interface film on zinc metal anodes (ZMAs). Such small molecular/nano‐colloidal multiscale electrolyte additives of ZAA are capable to not only improve ionic conductivity and transference number but also inhibit corrosion, hydrogen evolution, and Zn dendrite on ZMAs. The SWA‐based Zn∥Zn half battery delivers a superb cumulative plating capacity of 15 Ah cm−2 under 1 mAh cm−2 and 20 mA cm−2, and the SWA‐based NH4V4O10∥Zn pouch cell obtains a capacity retention of 67.8% within 4000 cycles under 4 A g−1. The study provides innovative insights for rational design of electrolyte additives, which may pave the way for the practicality of AZIBs.

Abstract:Herein, N‐methyl formamide (NMF), a multi‐function electrolyte additive is applied to enhance the electrochemical performance. Studied via advanced synchrotron radiation spectroscopy and DFT calculations, it is evidenced that NMF additive can simultaneously modify the Zn2+ solvation structure and ensure uniform zinc deposition, thus suppressing both parasitic side reactions and dendrites formation. Parasitic side reactions and dendrites formation hinder the application of aqueous zinc ion batteries due to inferior cycling life and low reversibility. Against this background, N‐methyl formamide (NMF), a multi‐function electrolyte additive is applied to enhance the electrochemical performance. Studied via advanced synchrotron radiation spectroscopy and DFT calculations, the NMF additive simultaneously modifies the Zn2+ solvation structure and ensures uniform zinc deposition, thus suppressing both parasitic side reactions and dendrite formation. More importantly, an ultralong cycling life of 3115 h in the Zn||Zn symmetric cell at a current density of 0.5 mA cm−2 is achieved with the NMF additive. Practically, the Zn||PANI full cell utilizing NMF electrolyte shows better rate and cycling performance compared to the pristine ZnSO4 aqueous electrolyte. This work provides useful insights for the development of high‐performance aqueous metal batteries.

Abstract:An interfacial engineering strategy is proposed to construct alkaline earth fluoride modified metal Zn electrodes with long lifespan and high capacity retention. The fluoride layer is revealed to guide uniform Zn stripping/plating, accelerate the transfer/diffusion of Zn2+ via Maxwell‐Wagner polarization, and act as a compact barrier between Zn electrode and electrolyte to hold back H2 evolution. Metallic zinc (Zn) is a highly promising anode material for aqueous energy storage systems due to its low redox potential, high theoretical capacity, and low cost. However, rampant dendrites/by‐products and torpid Zn2+ transfer kinetics at electrode/electrolyte interface severely threaten the cycling stability, which deteriorate the electrochemical performance of Zn‐ion batteries. Herein, an interfacial engineering strategy to construct alkaline earth fluoride modified metal Zn electrodes with long lifespan and high capacity retention is reported. The compact fluoride layer is revealed to guide uniform Zn stripping/plating and accelerate the transfer/diffusion of Zn2+ via Maxwell‐Wagner polarization. A series of in situ and ex situ spectroscopic studies verified that the fluoride layer can guide uniform Zn stripping/plating. Electrochemical kinetics analyses reveal that positive effect on the removal of Zn2+ solvation sheath provided by fluoride layer. Meanwhile, this fluoride coating layer can act as a barrier between the Zn electrode and electrolyte, providing a high electrode overpotential toward hydrogen evolution reaction to hold back H2 evolution. Consequently, the fluoride‐modified Zn anode exhibited a capacity retention of 88.2% after 4000 cycles under10 A g−1. This work opens up a new path to interface engineering for propelling the exploration of advanced rechargeable aqueous Zn‐ion batteries.

Abstract:The practical application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) is limited due to the inherent side reactions and dendrites growth of Zn anode. Herein, we propose a solution to the issue of AZIBs by creating a versatile electrolyte through the addition of trifluoroacetamide (TFA). The CO group of TFA interacts strongly with Zn2+, leading to a change in the inherent structure of Zn(H2O)62+ and an enhancement in the transport of Zn2+. The interaction between TFA and H2O disrupts the H bonds network structure of H2O, resulting in a reduction of active H2O and stabilization of the electrolyte's pH value. Moreover, TFA, with a low LUMO value, breaks down into Zn4CO3(OH)6•H2O and ZnF2, forming a robust SEI that results in uniform Zn2+ deposition and improved Zn2+ transport kinetics. As a result, Zn//Zn symmetric cells with TFA electrolyte remain stable for over 1360 h and 800 h at high current densities of 5 mA cm-2 and 40 mA cm-2, respectively. TFA electrolyte also enables Zn//5,7,12,14-pentacenetetrone full cells and Zn//Active carbon capacitors to perform steadily for 10,000 cycles at 25°C and 70°C, respectively. This research provides valuable insights into the use of electrolyte additives and promotes the long-term stability of AZIBs even under ultra-high current densities.

Water‐induced parasitic reaction, e.g., spontaneous corrosion and hydrogen evolution reaction, has been widely recognized as a culprit of the poor electrochemical performance of Zn anode in aqueous electrolyte. Nevertheless, how the interfacial water, the pertinent participant of the Zn electrochemistry, affects the parasitic reaction occurring on Zn anode remains incompletely understood. Herein, a step forward toward understanding the relationship of the hydrogen‐bond network of interfacial water and the electrochemical performance of Zn anode is reported, where the structure of interfacial water can be regulated by (aminomethyl)phosphonic acid (AMPA), a molecular additive that can specifically adsorb on Zn surface. Direct spectral evidence coupled with theoretical calculation reveals that the AMPA preferentially adsorbs on the Zn anode surface that serves as a shield for water dissociation (i.e., spontaneous corrosion). Moreover, AMPA can promote interfacial water toward ordered H‐bond network with high electrochemical stability at electrified interface. As a result, water‐induced parasitic reaction has been significantly suppressed, enabling a dendrite‐free Zn2+ deposition, an exceptional high coulombic efficiency, prolonged longevity of model Zn/Zn cells, and improved Zn//NH4V4O10 full battery. The results presented here underscore the ramifications of interfacial water structure and provide design criteria for versatile electrolytes of rechargeable Zn batteries.

Integrated Interfacial Modulation Strategy: Trace Sodium Hydroxyethyl Sulfonate Additive for Extended-Life Zn Anode Based on Anion Adsorption and Electrostatic Shield

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are poised to play a pivotal part in meeting the growing demands for energy storage and powering portable electronics for their superior security, affordability, and environmentally friendly characteristics. However, the detrimental side reactions occurring at the zinc anode and the dendrite caused by uneven zinc plating/stripping have greatly compromised the cycling life of AZIBs, thereby impeding their practical prospects. In this study, the interfacial comodulation strategy was employed by combining the "electrostatic shielding" effect of cations with the characteristic adsorption of anions. Two molar ZnSO4 served as the matrix, and sodium hydroxyethyl sulfonate (SHES) was selected as a low-cost, nontoxic additive. Experimental results confirm that SHES and zinc anode exhibit robust interactions that lead to the formation of an electrostatic shield and a dynamic adsorption layer at the interface, thereby suppressing hydrogen evolution and corrosion. The combined "electrostatic shielding" effect of sodium ions and the robust characteristic adsorption of hydroxyethyl sulfonate anions serve to guide the directed three-dimensional (3D) diffusion of Zn2+, facilitating rapid, stable, and uniform deposition of zinc. Due to these effects, incorporating 0.2 M SHES as an additive extends the cycle life beyond 3600 h and enables a highly reversible process of deposition and stripping in symmetric cells. Additionally, the Zn-Cu half-cell exhibits reliable cycling for over 1400 cycles, achieving an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.6%. Moreover, the introduction of this additive substantially enhances the performance of Zn-MnO2 and Zn-NH4V4O10 full cells. This study demonstrates the practical feasibility of achieving anodes with high reversibility in AZIBs through the implementation of a strategy that involves anion adsorption at the interface, which holds paramount significance for the practical application of AZIBs.

Abstract:Uncontrolled dendrites growth and serious parasitic reactions in aqueous electrolytes, greatly hinder the practical application of aqueous zinc-ion battery. On the basis of in situ-chemical construction and performance-improving mechanism, multifunctional fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) is introduced into aqueous electrolyte to construct a high-quality and ZnF2 -riched inorganic/organic hybrid SEI (ZHS) layer on Zn metal anode (ZMA) surface. Notably, FEC additive can regulate the solvated structure of Zn2+ to reduce H2 O molecules reactivity. Additionally, the ZHS layer with strong Zn2+ affinity can avoid dendrites formation and hinder the direct contact between the electrolyte and anode. Therefore, the dendrites growth, Zn corrosion, and H2 evolution reaction on ZMA in FEC-included ZnSO4 electrolyte are highly suppressed. Thus, ZMA in such electrolyte realize a long cycle life over 1000 h and deliver a stable coulombic efficiency of 99.1 % after 500 cycles.
