Abstract:Three B2-type inter-metallic AlFe1 - δ phases (0.18 < δ < 0.05) in the Al-Fe binary system were synthesized by smelting and high temperature sinter-ing methods. The exact crystal structure for δ = 0.05 was refined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The amount of vacancy defects at the Fe atom sites was obtained by refining the corresponding site occupancy factor, converging to the chemical formula AlFe0.95, with a structure identical to that of ideal AlFe models inferred from powder X-ray or neutron diffraction patterns.
Preparation and properties of FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx high-entropy alloy

Abstract:The FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx(x=0,0.1,0.2,0.5 mol) high-entropy alloy were prepared by high-frequency induction melting under vacuum condition,and the ingots were processed by solid-solution treatment.According to X-ray diffraction results,the FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx high-entropy alloy has simple fcc structure.Compressive properties of the alloy were tested by WAW-3100 testing machine.It is found that the FeNiMnCuC0.2 high-entropy alloy has high compressive strength,which reaches 5 218 MPa.With the increase of Al content,the compressive strength of the alloy decreases,When x=0.1 mol,a good combination of compressive strength and plastic strain is obtained,which are 4 037 MPa and more than 75%,respectively.When the content of Al reaches x=0.5 mol,the alloy exhibits brittle fracture.The results of microstructure and EDS show that the addition of a small amount of Al(x=0.1,0.2 mol) can make FeNiMnCuC0.2Alx grains finer;while x=0.5 mol,primary dendrite grains grow.EDS finds dendritic segregation area to be Fe,Ni rich,while interdendritic segregation area is found to be Mn,Cu rich.The distribution of C,Al is almost identical.
Magnetic ordering and electron correlation of iron-based superconductor (Ca3Al2O5-x)(Fe2As2) from first-principles study

Abstract:In this paper the density-functional theory calculations are performed on the newly discovered superconductor (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2). Within the LSDA approach, the total-energy calculations show that the ground state is in striped anti-ferromagnetic (S-AFM) order for (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) (x=0 and 0.5) and oxygen vacancy is easily formed at 8g site for (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) (x=0.5). The electronic densities of the states around the Fermi energy (EF) mainly come from the Fe-3d states for both nonmagnetic and S-AFM configurations of (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) (x=0) and the total DOSs (both spins) around the EF become obviously larger when oxygen vacancies are introduced at 8g site. Considering electron correlation, it is found that a strong correlation insulating gap develops with the increase of Hubbard U for the parent compound (Ca3Al2O5)(Fe2As2), and the transition from insulator to metal is forecasted when oxygen vacancies are introduced in (Ca3Al2O5−x)(Fe2As2) system. The ground state of this compound could be ascribed as a correlated insulator and the oxygen vacancy yields its transition from insulator to metal.
Structural stability and electronic properties of the new superconductor (Ca4Al2O6 - X)(Fe2As2) from first-principles study

Abstract:Density-functional theory calculations are performed on (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) to address the structural stability and electronic properties. The total-energy calculations show that the ground state of the parent compound (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) has striped anti-ferromagnetic order with anti-ferromagnetic coupling between Fe layers. The oxygen vacancy formation energy at the 4f site (similar to 6.02 eV) is smaller than that at the 2c site (similar to 6.33 eV) for the (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) (x = 1) phase, which means oxygen vacancies can be easily formed at the 4f site. Further studies show that the ground state of (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) (x = 0.25) is identical to the case of (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2), which implies that the spin density wave (SDW) may coexist with superconductivity in the (Ca4Al2O5.75)(Fe2As2) phase. The densities of states (DOSs) of (Ca4Al2O6-x)(Fe2As2) (x = 0, 0.25) show that both spin-up and spin-down DOSs at the Fermi energy level become larger obviously due to oxygen vacancies being introduced, which means introducing oxygen vacancies in (Ca4Al2O6)(Fe2As2) is beneficial for improving its conductivity. These results will be helpful for synthesizing new 42 622-type structured iron-based superconductors with oxygen vacancies.
Fcc and Bcc Equivalents in As-Cast Solid Solutions of Alxcoycrzcu0.5fevniw High-Entropy Alloys

Abstract:The determination of a material's microstructure is of great importance in understanding its properties, and this of course is no exception for the newly developed high-entropy alloys. The composition is a principal factor in dictating the microstructure formed. It is well known that certain elements can stabilize particular phases in conventional alloys. For convenience, elements which can influence a material's properties in the same way, such as stabilizing a particular phase, can be made to be 'equivalent' to a given reference element. In the present study, the phase fort-ning equivalents of elements in the high-entropy AlxCoyCrzCu0.5NivFew alloy system were investigated by varying the molar ratios of each element (lettered subscripts) within a range of 0 to 3.5, while maintaining the other elements and Cu at 1 and 0.5, respectively. It was shown by X-ray diffraction (XRD) that Ni and Co are FCC stabilizers, Al and Cr are BCC stabilizers and Fe is neutral in the solid-solution phases that form. From energy dispersive spectroscopy chemical analysis and XRD, it was determined that 1.11 Co-FCC is equivalent to Ni-FCC for the FCC stabilizers, and that 2.23 Cr-BCC is equivalent to Al-BCC for the BCC stabilizers. A 45-55 % rule is found for judging whether a phase will be FCC or BCC, wherein a phase has an FCC structure if the % Co-FCC is greater than 45 at. % and a BCC structure if the % CrBCC is greater than 55 at. %.

Abstract:As part of a systematic investigation into the ternary system CaO-Fe 2 O 3 -SiO 2 , we discovered a phase with a general chemical composition of A 14 O 20 (where A represents Ca, Fe, and Si) and previously unknown symmetry. Synthesis experiments were conducted at 1200 °C in air with an oxide ratio of CaO:Fe 2 O 3 :SiO 2 = 3:5:1 in the starting mixture. In addition to β-Ca 2 SiO 4 , and hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ), powder X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the presence of compounds related to the aluminum-free counterpart of a silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA), one of the major bonding phases in iron ore sinter. Single crystals of this so-called SFC phase, large enough for diffraction experiments, were found in the sintered pellet fragments under a digital microscope. The compound with composition Ca 2.68 Fe 10.32 Si 1.00 O 20 crystallizes in space group I 2/ c and has the following basic crystallographic data: a = 10.4643(10) Å, b = 15.2740(11) Å, c = 5.3050(5) Å, β = 110.017(9)°, V = 796.69(13) Å 3 and Z = 2. The final composition, as determined by crystal structure refinement, differs slightly from the weight-specified starting mixture of Ca 3 Fe 10 SiO 20 and suggests the presence of both Fe(III) and small amounts of Fe(II) in the sample. The crystal structure is related to that of the triclinic polytype-1A of SFC, but exhibits a higher degree of disorder due to the partial occupation of additional octahedrally and tetrahedrally coordinated sites. This results in a smaller unit cell and an increased space-group symmetry. The described phase can be regarded as a basic or family structure, from which the two simplest polytypes (1A and hypothetical 2M) can be derived through ordering processes of cations among different possible vacancies. The chemical similarity to one of the phases of the SFCA-family suggests that such disordered compounds could also occur in industrial sinters.

Abstract:Constituent phases, melting behaviors, and microstructure of multicomponent (Fe0.5Co0.5) x (Mo0.1C0.2B0.5Si0.2)100–x alloys (x = 95, 90, 85, 80, and 70) produced by copper mold casting were evaluated by various analysis techniques, i.e., X-ray diffractometry, scanning electronic microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and differential scanning calorimetry. Metastable Fe3C- and Cr23C6-type phases were identified in the chill-cast alloys. A schematic illustration was proposed to explain the evolution of constituent phases and microstructure for the alloys with x = 95, 90, and 85 during the solidification process, which could be applicable to controlling microstructural formation of other multicomponent alloys with similar microstructures by artificially adjusting the composition.

Abstract:FexAg1−x (x=0.20−0.65) and FeyCu1−y (y=0.50−0.75) nano-multilayers were prepared by alternative deposition of pure constituent metals. Ion mixing of the multilayers by 200 keV xenon ions at 77K resulted in the formation of a similar metastable phase with a big lattice of cubic structure, when the ion dose exceeded 1×1016 and 1×1015 Xe+/cm2 for Fe/Ag and Fe/Cu systems, respectively. The fraction of the new phase emerged in the alloy films increased with increasing ion dose in both cases.

Abstract:Among cubic metals, the cubic phase has excellent heat-resistance potential owing to its cube-on-cube orientation relationship with the matrix. In this study, a new cubic phase, Al5Cu6(Li,Mg)2, was identified in an Al-Cu-Li-Mg-X alloy after ageing at 165 °C for 15 h. It has a Pm3 structure similar to that of both Al5Cu6Li2 and Al5Cu6Mg2. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations noted that the precipitation of Al5Cu6Li2 is more energetically favorable than that of Al5Cu6Mg2 in the Al-Cu-Li-Mg-X alloy. Moreover, the formation enthalpy may be further reduced when the Mg atoms replace some Li sites in Al5Cu6Li2, in favor of the formation of Al5Cu6(Li,Mg)2.

Abstract:Fe75Cu25 nano-multilayers were prepared by alternative deposition of pure Fe and Cu metals and then annealed in situ in transmission electron microscopy to investigate the structural phase transformation. A new phase was formed in the Fe-Cu multilayers by interdiffusion at 820°C for about 10 min and was identified to be of fcc structure with a lattice parameter of 0.854±0.005 nm.

Abstract:<p>Separation of Fe-containing intermetallics is an effective method to decrease Fe content in Al-Si alloys. Regular morphology and higher precipitation temperature are necessary for physical separation of Fe-containing phases. So far, there have been few studies about the three-dimensional (3D) morphology evolution, crystal structure variation and physical mechanism for the precipitation temperature improvement of Fe-containing phases. Combined with experiments and first-principles calculations, the effects of Mn on 3D morphology, crystal structure and precipitation temperature of Fe-containing phases are systematically investigated. The DSC and first-principles calculations show that the precipitation temperature of Fe-containing phase improves prominently after the addition of Mn and the high precipitation temperature of α-AlFeMnSi attributes to its stronger chemical bonding strength of Mn-Si validated by binding energy and Mulliken population analysis, which also leads to high Young's modulus and hardness of α-AlFeMnSi. It demonstrates that the crystal structure of Fe-containing intermetallics is transformed from monoclinic β-AlFeSi to cubic α-AlFeMnSi and the morphology changes from plate-like to dodecahedron shapes.</p>

Abstract:Although the Al2Fe phase has similar decagonal-like atomic arrangements as that of the orthorhombic Al5Fe2 phase, no evidence for intergrowth samples of Al2Fe and Al5Fe2 has been reported. In the present work, the co-existence of Al2Fe and Al5Fe2 phases has been discovered from the educts obtained with a nominal atomic ratio of Al:Fe of 2:1 by arc melting. First, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) as well as scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) measurements have been utilized to determine the exact crystal structures of both phases, which are refined to be Al12.48Fe6.52 and Al5.72Fe2, respectively. Second, the orientation relationship between Al2Fe and Al5Fe2 has been directly deduced from the SXRD data sets, and the co-existence structure model has been constructed. Finally, four pairs of parallel atomic planes and their unique orientation relations have been determined from the reconstructed reciprocal-space precession images of (0kl), (h0l), and (hk0) layers. In addition, one kind of interface atomic structure model is constructed by the orientation relations between two phases, correspondingly.

Abstract:Metastable fee Fe-Cu alloys in the L1(0) phase have been prepared by stacking one monolayer of Fe and one monolayer of Cu alternately, [Fe(1 ML)/Cu(1 ML)](n) (where n less than or equal to 25) onto a Cu(001) substrate using pulsed-laser deposition. The observed reflection high-energy electron-diffraction oscillations for each Fe and Cu layer and their growth mode as studied by scanning tunneling microscopy indicate a nearly layer-by-layer growth. Alloys up to n=22 (22 bilayers) have fcc(001) structure, then change from fee to bcc structure. Magnetic hysteresis loops measured using the magneto-optical Kerr effect indicate that for 1 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 25 the films are ferromagnetic with the easy axis of magnetization within the plane of the films. For the basic unit of double-layer configuration a Curie temperature of 130 K is estimated. It increases linearly with the number of stackings reaching a saturation value of 400 K at five double layers and beyond.

Abstract:Fe73.5Cu1Nb3−xTixSi13.5B9 (x=0, 1, 2, 3) amorphous ribbons were prepared by melt spinning technique, then subjected to isothermal treatments for 1h at 500 and 550°C, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements show that the α-Fe(Si) phase can be formed over a wider temperature with the increase of Ti content, from 156°C for x=0 to 164°C for x=3. Volume fraction of nanocrystalline α-Fe(Si) phase also increases with the increase of Ti content after annealing at 500 and 550°C for 1h, which is beneficial to enhance the ferromagnetic exchanging coupling in the alloys. DO3 ordered superstructure phase formed in the samples with Ti content of 2% and 3%. Better soft magnetic properties were obtained after annealing for 1h at 550°C than at 500°C, accompanied by the enhancement of saturation magnetization from 140.68emu/g for x=0 to 148.87emu/g for x=3 and the reduction of coercivity from 3.194G for x=0 to 1.151G for x=3.

Abstract:In the Al-Fe binary system, the Al13Fe3 phase as well as the Al13Fe4 phase has similar icosahedral building blocks like those appearing in quasicrystals. Therefore, it is of vital importance to clarify the formation process of these two phases. Coexistence of the Al13Fe3 and Al13Fe4 phases was discovered from the educts obtained with a nominal atomic ratio of Al/Fe of 9:2 by high-pressure sintering for the first time. Firstly, single crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) combined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) measurement capabilities were adopted to determine the detailed crystal structures of both phases, which were sharply refined with regard to Al13Fe3 and Al13Fe4. Secondly, the orientation relationship between Al13Fe3 and Al13Fe4 was directly deduced from the SXRD datasets and the coexistence structure model was consequently constructed. Finally, seven pairs of parallel atomic planes and their unique orientation relations were determined from the reconstructed reciprocal space precession images. In addition, the real space structure model of the intergrowth crystal along with one kind of interfacial atomic structure were constructed from the determined orientation relations between two phases.
Investigation on structural stability of as-cast Al0.5CrCuFeMnTi high entropy alloy

Abstract:To reveal the bonding effect of alloying elements in high entropy alloys and the source of structural stability of alloys, an as-cast Al0 · 5CrCuFeMnTi high entropy alloy was synthesized by arc melting under argon protection. The results show that the as-cast alloy is composed of a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) and a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure, and there is a distinct phase interface with a disordered arrangement of atoms between the dendritic (DR) and interdendritic (ID) regions. The calibrated (002), (110), and (112) crystal faces determined through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirm that DR phase has the HCP structure, while the ID phase forms solid solutions with the BCC structure by calibrated (110), (01-1), and (12-1) crystal faces. The results from first principles calculations show that the structural stability of the alloy is improved by the strong covalent bonding between Fe and Al, Cr, Fe, Ti atoms in the DR region, and between Al and Cu, Mn atoms in the ID region. The calculated results of solid solution parameters show that the atomic size difference and the mixing enthalpy of this alloy satisfy the criteria for stable solid solutions.

Abstract:The local structures of the immiscible Fe100-xCux alloys (x=0,10,20,40,60,80 and 100)produced by mechanical alloying have been investigated by XAFS.For the Fe100-xCux(x≥40) alloys,the local structures around Fe atoms change from bcc structure to fcc one,and the Cu atoms maintain the original coordination geometry after milling for 160 h. On the contrary, the local structures around Cu atoms in both Fe80 Cu20and Fe90 Cu10 alloys appears a transition from fcc to bcc structure.We found that the disorder factor σ(0.0099nm)of fcc Fe—Cu phase is larger than that (0.0081nm) of bcc Fe—Cu phase,and the σ(0.0099nm) around Fe atoms is larger than that (0.0089nm) of Cu in the Fe100-xCux(x≥40) alloys. This suggests that the mechanically alloyed Fe100-xCux alloys is not a homogeneous supersaturated solid solution,but consists of Fe-rich and Cu-rich regions for various compositions.A possible mechanism for bcc-to-fcc and fcc-to-bcc changes in Fe100-xCux alloys is discussed in relation to the interdiffusion and transition induced by the ball milling.

Abstract:The magnetic properties of annealed Fe84-xSi4B8P4Cux(x=0, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 1.5) soft-magnetic alloys prepared by melt-spinning were investigated. In this alloy system, the appropriate addition of the Cu element promotes the precipitation of alpha-Fe(Si), as well as inhibits the precipitation of other phases. The saturation magnetic flux density B-s increases and the coercivity H-c markedly decreases simultaneously with increasing Cu content until x 1.25. The Fe82.75Si4B8P4Cu1.25 alloy annealed at 873 K for 1.8 ks shows a high Bs of 1.83 T and excellent soft-magnetic properties such as a low H-c of 2.1 A/m and a high effect permeability of 31 600. Abstract:A series of (AlCoCrFeMn)(100 - )Cu-x(x) high-entropy alloys (0, 4, 8, 12, 16 at.-%) were prepared by vacuum arc furnace melting and their phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. The results show that Cu can induce phase transformation from the orthorhombic phase to the Laves phase in (AlCoCrFeMn)(100 - )Cu-x(x) high-entropy alloys and the volume fractions of Laves phase increases from 0 to 70% with increasing Cu content. The compression fracture strain increases from 5 to 16% and the compression fracture strength also increases from 1380 to 2140 MPa with Cu content increases. The increased volume fraction of the Laves phase is the main factor for the ductility increases.
