Abstract:Plants can recruit soil microorganisms into the rhizosphere when experiencing various environmental stresses, including biotic (e.g., insect pests) and abiotic (e.g., heavy metal pollution, droughts, floods, and salinity) stresses. However, species coexistence in plant resistance has not received sufficient attention. Current research on microbial coexistence is only at the community scale, and there is a limited understanding of the interaction patterns between species, especially microbe‒microbe interactions. The relevant interaction patterns are limited to a few model strains. The coexisting microbial communities form a stable system involving complex nutritional competition, metabolic exchange, and even interdependent interactions. This pattern of coexistence can ultimately enhance plant stress tolerance. Hence, a systematic understanding of the coexistence pattern of rhizosphere microorganisms under stress is essential for the precise development and utilization of synthetic microbial communities and the achievement of efficient ecological control. Here, we integrated current analytical methods and introduced several new experimental methods to elucidate rhizosphere microbial coexistence patterns. Some advancements (e.g., network analysis, coculture experiments, and synthetic communities) that can be applied to plant stress resistance are also updated. This review aims to summarize the key role and potential application prospects of microbial coexistence in the resistance of plants to environmental stresses. Our suggestions, enhancing plant resistance with coexisting microbes, would allow us to gain further knowledge on plant-microbial and microbial-microbial functions, and facilitate translation to more effective measures.

Abstract:In the past four decades, tremendous progress has been made in understanding how plants respond to microbial colonization and how microbial pathogens and symbionts reprogram plant cellular processes. In contrast, our knowledge of how environmental conditions impact plant-microbe interactions is less understood at the mechanistic level, as most molecular studies are performed under simple and static laboratory conditions. In this review, we highlight research that begins to shed light on the mechanisms by which environmental conditions influence diverse plant-pathogen, plant-symbiont, and plant-microbiota interactions. There is a great need to increase efforts in this important area of research in order to reach a systems-level understanding of plant-microbe interactions that are more reflective of what occurs in nature.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses are the most significant factors reducing agricultural productivity. Plants face extreme environmental conditions that may affect their biological mechanisms, thereby influencing their growth and development. Microorganisms possess substantial metabolites that aid in helping plants mitigate abiotic stresses. Plants’ interaction with microbes constitutes a diversified ecosystem, as sometimes both the partners share a mutualistic relationship. Endophytes, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs), and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) are examples of microorganisms that play an essential role in alleviating abiotic stresses and, hence, improving plant growth. The plant–microbe interaction leads to the modulation of complex mechanisms in the plant cellular system. Moreover, the residing microbial flora also inhibits the phytopathogens, therefore, it becomes part of plants’ innate defense system. Keeping in view the growing environmental concerns, it is important to identify the role of the plant microbiome in the transportation of nutrients to maintain sustainable production. Furthermore, it is important to identify the factors enabling plants to recruit beneficial microbial species and how to deal with the potential pathogens. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the impacts of various abiotic stressors on agricultural productivity and the role of beneficial microorganisms in mitigating the negative effects of abiotic stresses. The literature review also shows that the beneficial microbes, including PGPRs, AMFs, and endophytes, adopt various mechanisms for ameliorating the negative effects of various stresses. It has been observed that biochar and microbes, either individually or in combination, can play a significant role in maintaining plant growth under stress conditions. Although conventional inoculation of beneficial microbes mitigates abiotic stresses and enhances productivity, the advancement in genetic engineering would help transfer specific genes from the microbes to plants to aid in abiotic stress mitigation.

Abstract:Crop plants are continuously exposed to various abiotic stresses like drought, salinity, ultraviolet radiation, low and high temperatures, flooding, metal toxicities, nutrient deficiencies which act as limiting factors that hampers plant growth and low agricultural productivity. Climate change and intensive agricultural practices has further aggravated the impact of abiotic stresses leading to a substantial crop loss worldwide. Crop plants have to get acclimatized to various environmental abiotic stress factors. Though genetic engineering is applied to improve plants tolerance to abiotic stresses, these are long-term strategies, and many countries have not accepted them worldwide. Therefore, use of microbes can be an economical and ecofriendly tool to avoid the shortcomings of other strategies. The microbial community in close proximity to the plant roots is so diverse in nature and can play an important role in mitigating the abiotic stresses. Plant-associated microorganisms, such as endophytes, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), are well-documented for their role in promoting crop productivity and providing stress tolerance. This mini review highlights and discusses the current knowledge on the role of various microbes and it's tolerance mechanisms which helps the crop plants to mitigate and tolerate varied abiotic stresses.

Abstract:The interaction between plants and microbes is an interesting and worth exploring issue, and abiotic stress is an important factor affecting the interaction. Abiotic stress can greatly affect the growth and development of crops, thereby negatively affecting food production and threatening the survival and development of human beings. Wheat is one of the important crops. With the continuous deterioration of the global ecological environment, many stress factors such as drought, high salt, and heavy metal pollution have reduced the yield and quality of wheat. Using the interaction between plants and microbes, and excavating beneficial microbes to interact with wheat, has positive effects such as enhancing stress resistance and promoting growth, which can provide solutions for ensuring wheat yield and quality under abiotic stress. This chapter started with the ubiquitous interaction between plants and microbes and the abiotic stress resistance brought by this interaction to plants, further revealed the plant-microbe interactions in wheat to deal with abiotic stress and its molecular mechanisms, the source of the microbes, the interaction of wheat-microbe-abiotic stress and finally introduced the application of omics in the study of the interaction between microbes and wheat. It provides clues and lays a theoretical foundation for the future exploration of antistress microbial inoculants for wheat planting, ensuring wheat yield and quality, and is of great significance to wheat production under the deteriorating global ecological environment.

Abstract:Endophytes are typically non-pathogenic microbes that at some period in their life cycles colonize the interior spaces of plant tissues. There is a growing interest in the role of the endophytes in ameliorating various stresses on plants, including biotic stress (such as pathogenic microbes) and abiotic stress (such as drought and salt stress), because endophytes can produce phytohormones, fixing nitrogen, antagonistic substances, enzymes, which plays an important role in plants respond to biotic and abiotic stress. Previously researchers have reviewed endophytes promote plant growth through direct or indirect mechanisms. In order to further clarify the interactions between endophytes and it’s host plants, we reviewed the biological properties of endophytes isolated from different parts of plant, the methods of plant inoculation with endophytes and the beneficial effects of endophytes to mitigate biotic and abiotic stress in plants.

Research Advances of Beneficial Microbiota Associated with Crop Plants

Abstract:Plants are associated with hundreds of thousands of microbes that are present outside on the surfaces or colonizing inside plant organs, such as leaves and roots. Plant-associated microbiota plays a vital role in regulating various biological processes and affects a wide range of traits involved in plant growth and development, as well as plant responses to adverse environmental conditions. An increasing number of studies have illustrated the important role of microbiota in crop plant growth and environmental stress resistance, which overall assists agricultural sustainability. Beneficial bacteria and fungi have been isolated and applied, which show potential applications in the improvement of agricultural technologies, as well as plant growth promotion and stress resistance, which all lead to enhanced crop yields. The symbioses of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, rhizobia and Frankia species with their host plants have been intensively studied to provide mechanistic insights into the mutual beneficial relationship of plant-microbe interactions. With the advances in second generation sequencing and omic technologies, a number of important mechanisms underlying plant-microbe interactions have been unraveled. However, the associations of microbes with their host plants are more complicated than expected, and many questions remain without proper answers. These include the influence of microbiota on the allelochemical effect caused by one plant upon another via the production of chemical compounds, or how the monoculture of crops influences their rhizosphere microbial community and diversity, which in turn affects the crop growth and responses to environmental stresses. In this review, first, we systematically illustrate the impacts of beneficial microbiota, particularly beneficial bacteria and fungi on crop plant growth and development and, then, discuss the correlations between the beneficial microbiota and their host plants. Finally, we provide some perspectives for future studies on plant-microbe interactions.

Abstract:Diverse plant genes are positively involved in reshaping the microbiota in response to stresses, which might be a novel layer of stress tolerance strategies during evolution.Canonical plant stress biology research has focused mainly on the dynamic regulation of internal genetic pathways in stress responses. Increasingly more studies suggest that plant‐mediated timely reshaping of the microbiota could also confer benefits in responding to certain biotic and abiotic stresses. This has led to the "cry for help" hypothesis, which is supported by the identification of plant genetic regulators integrating biotic/abiotic stress signaling and microbiota sculpting. Although diverse genetic mutants have been reported to affect microbiota composition, it has been challenging to confirm the causal link between specific microbiota changes and plant phenotypic outputs (e.g., fitness benefits) due to the complexity of microbial community composition. This limits the understanding of the relevance of plant‐mediated microbiota changes. We reviewed the genetic bases of host‐mediated reshaping of beneficial microbiota in response to biotic and abiotic stresses, and summarized the practical approaches linking microbiota changes and "functional outputs" in plants. Further understanding of the key regulators and pathways governing the assembly of stress‐alleviating microbiota would benefit the design of crops that could dynamically enlist beneficial microbiota under conditions of stress.

Abstract:Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) are highlighted for their beneficial effects on plant development and stress tolerance. Plant-growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPMs), including various bacterial and fungal species, are identified as key players in enhancing plant growth, nutrient absorption, and disease resistance. The interactions between plants and soil microbes, such as nutrient mobilization and disease prevention, are explored in detail. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding plant-microbe interactions for developing sustainable agricultural practices. It discusses the potential of beneficial microorganisms, such as biological control agents (BCA) and plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), in improving crop productivity and disease management. The molecular mechanisms underlying plant defense responses and microbial interactions are investigated to develop innovative crop protection strategies. Furthermore, the review article delves into the role of microorganisms in mitigating abiotic stresses, such as salt, drought, and pollution. Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria (PGPB) are highlighted for their ability to enhance nutrient absorption, nitrogen fixation, and resistance to salt stress through induced systemic tolerance (IST). Phytoremediation techniques, which utilize bacteria coexisting with plants to remove organic contaminants and heavy metals from soils, are also discussed. Overall, the review article underscores the significance of plant-microbe interactions in agriculture and environmental remediation. It calls for further research to elucidate the complex mechanisms underlying these interactions and to develop effective strategies for harnessing the potential of beneficial microorganisms in promoting plant growth, nutrient uptake, and stress tolerance.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses affect the plant growth in different ways and at different developmental stages that reduce the crop yields. The increasing world population continually demands more crop yields; therefore it is important to use low-cost technologies against abiotic stresses to increase crop productivity. Soil microorganisms survive in the soil associated with plants in extreme condition. It was demonstrated that these beneficial microorganisms promote plant growth and development under various stresses. The soil microbes interact with the plant through rhizospheric or endophytic association and promote the plant growth through different processes such as nutrients mobilization, disease suppression, and hormone secretions. The microorganisms colonized in the rhizospheric region and imparted the abiotic stress tolerance by producing 1-aminocyclopropane-1- carboxylate (ACC) deaminase, antioxidant, and volatile compounds, inducing the accumulation of osmolytes, production of exopolysaccharide, upregulation or downregulation of stress genes, phytohormones and change the root morphology. A large number of these rhizosphere microorganisms are now patented. In the present review, an attempt was made to throw light on the mechanism of micro-organism that operates during abiotic stresses and promotes plant survival and productivity.

Abstract:Rhizosphere microbiomes and plant-microbiome interactions govern many key biogeochemical processes important for plant nutrition and their ability to tolerate biotic and abiotic stresses. Several studies suggest interactions of microbes with crop plants play a prominent role in adaptation, maintenance, and survival of both the partners as well as for soil health in a number of abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, heavy metal contamination, etc., by regulating changes in terms of biochemical, physiological, and molecular processes of plants. The strain specificity plays crucial role in exploiting characteristic potential of candidate microbe to provide tolerance and alleviate negative impact of abiotic stresses in plants. During stress management, plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) have been shown to activate plant antioxidant defense machinery by regulating the activity of scavenging key enzymes to level over produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and by regulating the amounts of proteins, polysaccharides, and important phytohormones. Many Rhizobacteria have also been shown to produce ACC deaminase enzyme initiating a cascade of physiological and biochemical changes in the plant thereby helping them withstand effects of abiotic stresses. Some of the examples for such PGPB include Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Bacillus, Bradyrhizobium, Burkholderia, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, Methylobacterium, and Variovorax. In view of the projections from climate-smart agriculture research, predictions for reduced rainfall and increased effects of other abiotic stresses such as salinity across many agricultural regions worldwide are being calculated, exploitation of the beneficial plant–microbe interactions to alleviate abiotic stress effects in crops should be one of the key approaches to improving global food production.
