Abstract:Annual loss of crop yields due to agricultural insect pests are approximately 10％. Effective and safe management of insect pests would reduce the loss of crop production. Insects live in an environment where they need to deal with biological and non-biological factors that impact their physiological and developmental activities to survive and expand their population. These environmental factors include, but not limited to, phytochemicals in the host plants they feed on, toxic compounds, such as insecticides sprayed by human, parasitoid, microbes, temperature and drought stress. In the long-term evolution, insects have developed sophisticated strategies to adapt the harmful factors against them. For example, to feed on different host plants, insects develop effective and comprehensive olfactory and gustatory receptor systems and detoxification enzyme systems to deal with the secondary toxic phytochemicals.

Abstract:Insect herbivores resemble one of the most significant biotic stresses to plants in natural and agricultural ecosystems, due to their high diversity and abundance (Wu and Baldwin, 2010).In the long-term coexistence between plants and insect herbivores, plants have evolved a diverse array of defense machineries to fend offattacks from insect herbivores;similarly, insect herbivores have evolved various strategies to mitigate and adapt to plant defense machineries to sustain their own survival.Plant resistance traits such as physical barriers and toxic chemicals may hinder the feeding of insect herbivores.And many plant resistance traits are controlled by plant hormone pathways (Erb and Reymond, 2019).Dissecting how insect herbivores respond and adapt to the hostile environment imposed by their host plants may contribute to a better understanding of insect-plant interactions, and more importantly offer targets for the management of these insect herbivores.

Abstract:There are complex chemical interactions between plants and phytophagous insects. On the one hand, when infested by phytophagous insects, plants can recognize herbivore-associated molecular patterns and trigger early signaling events and phytohormone-mediated signaling pathways. The activated signaling pathways thus result in the reconfiguration of transcriptomes and metabolomes as well as the increases in direct and indirect defensive compounds in plants, which in turn enhance the resistance of plants to phytophagous insects. On the other hand, phytophagous insects can recognize defense responses in plants and then inhibit or adapt to plant chemical defenses by secreting effector, sequestrating and detoxifying defensive compounds, and/or reducing sensitivity to defensive compounds. The deep analysis of chemical interactions between plant and phytophagous insects could improve the understanding of the relationship between insects and plants in theory and also provide important theoretical and technical guidance for the development of new technologies for crop pest control in practice.
The influence of water stress on the plant-herbivore interactions

Abstract:Water as an important environment factor that plays a vital role in the growth and development of terrestrial life. With global warming and the consequent more frequent occurrence of abnormal weather conditions, water stress has become an important adverse stress factor which influences the growth and development of both plants and herbivores. This article describes both the direct and indirect influence of water stress on phytophagous insects. Direct effects include humidity, rainfall and soil moisture content and indirect effects include the effects of water stress on the host plants and the natural enemies of herbivorous insects. The object of this review is to provide a theoretical reference for understanding the effects of water stress on agricultural pests and to thereby improve their prevention and control.
Major advance on the interaction mechanism among plants,pest insects and natural enemies in China

Abstract:During 2006-2010,with support from a grant from the"National Basic Research Program of China"(973 Program)(No.2006CB102000),Chinese entomologists have conducted a lot of researches on the interactions among plants,pest insects and natural enemies.Many outstanding findings have been published in important journals,such as Science,New Phytology and Plant Journal.In this paper,we review major new findings in Chinese entomology over the past 5 years.For example,silencing the OsHI-LOX gene makes rice more susceptible to chewing herbivores but enhances resistance to a phloem-feeder;larval feeding by two sibling species of induced different defensive responses in tobacco;plants release the common chemical(3Z)-hexen-ol to attract parasitic wasps to defend them from insect pests;functional synchronization of biological rhythms exhibits a tritrophic system;ecological trade-offs between jasmonic acid-dependent direct and indirect plant defenses exist in tritrophic interactions;elevated CO2 changes interactions between nematodes and tomato genotypes with different JA pathways;and mirid bug outbreaks in multiple crops were correlated with the wide-scale adoption of Bt cotton in China.These results have greatly improved understanding of the mechanisms of interaction between plants,pest insects and their natural enemies.

Abstract:Attacks on plants by both viruses and their vectors is common in nature. Yet the dynamics of the plant-virus-vector tripartite system, in particular the effects of viral infection on plant-insect interactions, have only begun to emerge in the last decade. Viruses can modulate the interactions between insect vectors and plants via the jasmonate, salicylic acid and ethylene phytohormone pathways, resulting in changes in fitness and viral transmission capacity of their insect vectors. Virus infection of plants may also modulate other phytohormones, such as auxin, gibberellins, cytokinins, brassinosteroids and abscisic acid, with yet undefined consequences on plant-insect interactions. Moreover, virus infection in plants may incur changes to other plant traits, such as nutrition and secondary metabolites, that potentially contribute to virus-associated, phytohormone-mediated manipulation of plant-insect interactions. In this article, we review the research progress, discuss issues related to the complexity and variability of the viral modulation of plant interactions with insect vectors, and suggest future directions of research in this field.

Abstract:There is a growing demand for high-quality agricultural products and more countries have adopted landscape management by sowing flowering plants in agricultural fields as an important branch of conservation biological control. However, there has been less concern over the interactions and trade-offs between floral plants and entomophagous arthropods. This paper review progress in pollen/nectar feeding habits of entomophagous insects including parasitoids and predators which are important natural enemies of crop pests in agricultural fields. Factors that influence the preference of different guilds of natural enemies are reviewed to guide the selection of flowering plants in conservation biological control practices. Most studies find that floral resources have positive effects on both biological traits of natural enemies and their abundance and diversity, and this is believed to contribute greatly to pest control. Furthermore, the potential impacts of floral resources on crop yields are also discussed with an emphasis on a guild of entomophagous insects that provides both pest control and pollination services. Chemical and Biological Technologies in Agriculture

Abstract:Insect's resilience to adverse conditions poses a significant challenge for integrated pest control. This has resulted in huge economic losses to agriculture and forestry production as well as a range of severe ecological issues. As a physiological mechanism of insects, digestive physiology plays an important role in the process of adaptation to stress factors. However, there has been no systematic review of what stresses insects can adapt to through digestive physiology and how digestive physiology is involved in insect adaptation to stresses. In this review, the potential link between digestive physiology and adaptation of insects to biotic and abiotic stresses, including plant defense mechanisms, chemical insecticides, and entomopathogenic microorganisms, is analyzed. We point to that digestive physiology composed of digestive enzymes and gut microbial communities is an important strategy for insects to resist plant physical defense (e.g., hemicellulose, pectin, and microfibers), chemical defense (e.g., azadirachtin, diterpenoid acids, and phenolic glycosides), chemical insecticide stress, and entomopathogenic microorganism infection. In addition, the primary function of the digestive physiology in insects is to ensure energy supply during biotic and abiotic stress, assist in the metabolism of exogenous toxins (e.g., anti-insect proteins, primary metabolites, secondary metabolites, and insecticides), and improve their innate immunity against entomopathogenic microorganisms. This review is helpful to elucidate the mechanism of pest adaptation to adversity, and provide a breakthrough point for analyzing the causes of pest outbreaks.

Effects of Elevated Carbon Dioxide on Insect-Plant Interactions

Abstract:Advances in rese arch on effects of elevated carbon dioxide on insect-plant interactions were reviewed in this paper.It has been well demonstrated that plants exhibited physiological and biochemical alterations under elevated CO_2 conditions,which in turn affect phytophagous insects at different levels.The feeding pattern,growth and development of chewing herbivores were all influenced by elevated CO_2,who increased feeding intensity and time for enough nitrogen nutrition,which in turn made them more subjected to their natural enemies and decreased their growth,breeding and survival rates.Most of the sap-sucking insects showed no significant reactions to the elevated CO_2,with some increase in population number.Some suggestions for future research were put forward.

Subtropical Tritrophic Interactions Under Elevated CO2 and Temperature Conditions

Abstract:The effects of climate change and extreme weather conditions on plants and animals have been documented extensively. However, the possible effects of these factors on plant-insect interactions in subtropical regions are relatively unexplored. The present study investigated the consequences of elevated CO2 and temperature on a tritrophic system (plant-insect-parasitoid) in subtropical regions. The experimental conditions were as follows: ambient CO2, 500 ppm; elevated CO2, 1,000 ppm; ambient temperature, 24/21°C (day/night); and elevated temperature, 29/26°C (day/night). Brassica oleracea var. italica foliar primary metabolites were quantified 6 wk after germination and insect feeding bioassays were subsequently conducted. Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae were fed directly on these plants until pupal development. In addition, the second instar S. litura larvae were exposed to the parasitoid Snellenius manilae (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) under the same plant treatment conditions. The results suggested that elevated CO2 has a major influence on plant performance and foliar quality. Elevated CO2 also affected the leaf area, foliar fresh and dry weights, and total nitrogen and carbohydrate contents. Elevated temperature reduced the larval development time and increased the growth rate of S. litura. Sn. manilae had a higher parasitism rate and shorter development time at elevated temperature compared with ambient temperature. These results suggested that the dynamic and communal structure of S. litura and its parasitoids requires comprehensive evaluation in terms of the changes in nutritional quality (bottom-up control) caused by the interactive effects of CO2 and temperature.

Abstract:Phenotypic plasticity, prevalent in all domains of life, enables organisms to cope with unpredictable or novel changes in their growing environment. Plants represent an interesting example of phenotypic plasticity which also directly represents and affects the dynamics of biological interactions occurring in a community. Insects, which interact with plants, manifest phenotypic plasticity in their developmental, physiological, morphological or behavioral traits in response to the various host plant defenses induced upon herbivory. However, plant-insect interactions are generally more complex and multidimensional because of their dynamic association with their respective microbiomes and macrobiomes. Moreover, these associations can alter plant and insect responses towards each other by modulating the degree of phenotypic plasticity in their various traits and studying them will provide insights into how plants and insects reciprocally affect each other's evolutionary trajectory. Further, we explore the consequences of phenotypic plasticity on relationships and interactions between plants and insects and its impact on their development, evolution, speciation and ecological organization. This overview, obtained after exploring and comparing data obtained from several inter-disciplinary studies, reveals how genetic and molecular mechanisms, underlying plasticity in traits, impact species interactions at the community level and also identifies mechanisms that could be exploited in breeding programs.

Abstract:In natural ecosystems, plants interact with biotic components such as microbes, insects, animals and other plants as well. Generally, researchers have focused on each interaction separately, which condenses the significance of the interaction. This limited presentation of the facts masks the collective role of constantly interacting organisms in complex communities disturbing not only plant responses but also the response of organisms for each other in natural ecological settings. Beneficial microorganisms interact with insect herbivores, their predators and pollinators in a bidirectional way through the plant. Fascinatingly, insects employ diverse tactics to protect themselves from parasites or predators. Influences of microbial and insects attack on plants can bring changes in info-chemical frameworks and play a role in the food chain also. After insect herbivory and microbial pathogenesis, plants exhibit intense morpho-physiological and chemical reprogramming that leads to repellence/attraction of attacking organism or its natural enemy. The characterization of such interactions in different ecosystems is receiving due consideration, and underlying molecular and physiological mechanisms must be the point of concentration to unveil the evolution of multifaceted multitrophic interactions. Therefore, we have focused this phenomenon in a more realistic setting by integrating ecology and physiology to portray these multidimensional interfaces. We have shown, in this article, physiological trajectories in plant-microbe and insect relationship and their ecological relevance in nature. We focus and discuss microbial pathogenesis in plants, induced defense and the corresponding behavior of herbivore insects and vice-versa. It is hoped that this review will stimulate interest and zeal in microbes mediated plant-insect interactions along with their ecological consequences and encourage scientists to accept the challenges in this field.
