Abstract:Abiotic stresses are important factors affecting plant growth and development and limiting agricultural production worldwide. Plants have evolved complex regulatory mechanisms to respond and adapt to constantly changing environmental conditions. C2H2 zinc finger proteins form a relatively large family of transcriptional regulators in plants. Recent studies have revealed that C2H2 zinc finger proteins function as key transcriptional regulators in plant responses to a wide spectrum of stress conditions, including extreme temperatures, salinity, drought, oxidative stress, excessive light and silique shattering. Here, we summarize recent functional analysis on C2H2 zinc finger proteins in plant responses to abiotic stresses and discuss their roles as part of a large regulatory network in the perception and responses by plants to different environmental stimuli.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses usually affect plant growth and development, indirectly or directly causing crop production reduction and even plant death. To survive, plants utilize different mechanisms to adapt themselves to continuously changing surrounding environmental stresses. Homeodomain‐leucine zipper (HD‐Zip) transcription factors are unique to the plant kingdom and divided into four different subfamilies (HD‐Zip I∼IV). Many HD‐Zip I members have been shown to play critical roles in the regulation of plant developmental processes, signaling networks and responses to environmental stresses. This review focuses on the role of HD‐Zip I transcription factors in plant responses to various abiotic stresses, including abscisic acid‐mediated stress, drought and cold stress, oxidative stress, helping to identify the potential regulatory mechanisms that alleviate abiotic stress in plants.

Abstract:ASR(the abscisic acid,stress,ripening protein)proteins are a suite of important family proteins found in organisms,which are generally involved in osmoregulation.They will be induced in plants under stress conditions,such as drought,low temperature,salt stress and ABA.The overexpression of ASR proteins can reduce plant injure by stress.ASR proteins can stabilize the cell membrane structure,and as molecular chaperones,can combine ions and prevent oxidation.In current paper,the classification and structure of ASR proteins,encoding genes,the expression and regulation of ASR proteins,and the relationship among ASR gene expression,ASR protein accumulation and plant stress tolerance has been summarized.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses, such as low or high temperature, deficient or excessive water, high salinity, heavy metals, and ultraviolet radiation, are hostile to plant growth and development, leading to great crop yield penalty worldwide. It is getting imperative to equip crops with multistress tolerance to relieve the pressure of environmental changes and to meet the demand of population growth, as different abiotic stresses usually arise together in the field. The feasibility is raised as land plants actually have established more generalized defenses against abiotic stresses, including the cuticle outside plants, together with unsaturated fatty acids, reactive species scavengers, molecular chaperones, and compatible solutes inside cells. In stress response, they are orchestrated by a complex regulatory network involving upstream signaling molecules including stress hormones, reactive oxygen species, gasotransmitters, polyamines, phytochromes, and calcium, as well as downstream gene regulation factors, particularly transcription factors. In this review, we aimed at presenting an overview of these defensive systems and the regulatory network, with an eye to their practical potential via genetic engineering and/or exogenous application.

Abstract:As a consequence of irregular and rapid changes in the external environment, plants are constantly exposed to a diverse range of stresses, including desiccation, high salinity, extreme temperatures, and metal toxicity. To contend with these stresses, plants have evolved an elaborate array of defense mechanisms and defense‐related molecules, including a range of regulatory proteins. Stress‐associated proteins (SAPs), a novel subclass of zinc‐finger proteins, have been established to play key roles in plant stress responses. These SAPs, which tend to be structurally conserved among different plant species and are typically characterized by a combination of the A20, AN1, and C2H2 domains, have attracted considerable interest in recent decades on account of their involvement in diverse abiotic stress responses. In this review, we aim to provide a brief overview of the discovery and identification of SAPs in plants, with a particular focus on their roles in response to different abiotic stresses. In this regard, phenotypic analyses using transgenic plants have highlighted the dual regulatory role of SAPs in modulating stress responses, wherein by inducing physiological and morphological alterations at the cellular level, they can contribute to both positive and negative effects. However, despite significant advances in the characterization of these proteins, their precise functions remain incompletely understood. This review consolidates our current knowledge regarding SAPs and delineates potential avenues for future research, which we anticipate will unravel the intricate functional dynamics of SAPs in plant stress responses.

Abstract:The graphical abstract illustrates the role played by plant stress‐associated proteins (SAPs) during environmental stress conditions. A comprehensive understanding of SAPs diversity, structure, localization, and expression highlights their involvement in stress signaling pathways and critical biological processes. Thus, SAPs can facilitate the development of crops resistant to multiple stresses without yield penalties. Every year, unfavorable environmental factors significantly affect crop productivity and threaten food security. Plants are sessile; they cannot move to escape unfavorable environmental conditions, and therefore, they activate a variety of defense pathways. Among them are processes regulated by stress‐associated proteins (SAPs). SAPs have a specific zinc finger domain (A20) at the N‐terminus and either AN1 or C2H2 at the C‐terminus. SAP proteins are involved in many biological processes and in response to various abiotic or biotic constraints. Most SAPs play a role in conferring transgenic stress resistance and are stress‐inducible. The emerging field of SAPs in abiotic or biotic stress response regulation has attracted the attention of researchers. Although SAPs interact with various proteins to perform their functions, the exact mechanisms of these interactions remain incompletely understood. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of SAPs, covering their diversity, structure, expression, and subcellular localization. SAPs play a pivotal role in enabling crosstalk between abiotic and biotic stress signaling pathways, making them essential for developing stress‐tolerant crops without yield penalties. Collectively, understanding the complex regulation of SAPs in stress responses can contribute to enhancing tolerance against various environmental stresses through several techniques such as transgenesis, classical breeding, or gene editing.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses usually cause protein dysfunction. Maintaining proteins in their functional conformations and preventing the aggregation of non-native proteins are particularly important for cell survival under stress. Heat-shock proteins (Hsps)/chaperones are responsible for protein folding, assembly, translocation and degradation in many normal cellular processes, stabilize proteins and membranes, and can assist in protein refolding under stress conditions. They can play a crucial role in protecting plants against stress by re-establishing normal protein conformation and thus cellular homeostasis. Here, we summarize the significance of Hsps and chaperones in abiotic stress responses in plants, and discuss the co-operation among their different classes and their interactions with other stress-induced components.

Abstract:Summary Defense against stress and active suppression of growth are two complementary strategies by which plants respond to adverse environments. Although beneficial for plant survival, active growth inhibition is often undesirable for crop productivity. Compared with the knowledge on how plants defend against stress-caused cellular impairment, much less is known about how stress signaling regulates plant growth and vice versa. Here, we review recent progress in this area and discuss recent studies suggesting that reciprocal regulation between stress-response and growth-control pathways occurs at multiple levels. Understanding this regulatory network will be critical for resetting the balance between stress resistance and growth in order to engineer stress-resistant and high-yielding crops.

Abstract:Abiotic stress is the adverse effect of any abiotic factor on a plant in a given environment, impacting plants’ growth and development. These stress factors, such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, are often interrelated or in conjunction with each other. Plants have evolved mechanisms to sense these environmental challenges and make adjustments to their growth in order to survive and reproduce. In this review, we summarized recent studies on plant stress sensing and its regulatory mechanism, emphasizing signal transduction and regulation at multiple levels. Then we presented several strategies to improve plant growth under stress based on current progress. Finally, we discussed the implications of research on plant response to abiotic stresses for high-yielding crops and agricultural sustainability. Studying stress signaling and regulation is critical to understand abiotic stress responses in plants to generate stress-resistant crops and improve agricultural sustainability.

Abstract:In eukaryotic cells, gene expression is greatly influenced by the dynamic chromatin environment. Epigenetic mechanisms, including covalent modifications to DNA and histone tails and the accessibility of chromatin,create various chromatin states for stress-responsive gene expression that is important for adaptation to harsh environmental conditions. Recent studies have revealed that many epigenetic factors participate in abiotic stress responses, and various chromatin modifications are changed when plants are exposed to stressful environments. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the cross-talk between abiotic stress response pathways and epigenetic regulatory pathways in plants. Our review focuses on epigenetic regulation of plant responses to extreme temperatures, drought,salinity, the stress hormone abscisic acid, nutrient limitations and ultraviolet stress, and on epigenetic mechanisms of stress memory.

Abstract:Due to the present scenario of climate change, plants have to evolve strategies to survive and perform under a plethora of biotic and abiotic stresses, which restrict plant productivity. Maintenance of plant protein functional conformation and preventing non-native proteins from aggregation, which leads to metabolic disruption, are of prime importance. Plant heat shock proteins (HSPs), as chaperones, play a pivotal role in conferring biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Moreover, HSP also enhances membrane stability and detoxifies the reactive oxygen species (ROS) by positively regulating the antioxidant enzymes system. Additionally, it uses ROS as a signal to molecules to induce HSP production. HSP also enhances plant immunity by the accumulation and stability of pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins under various biotic stresses. Thus, to unravel the entire plant defense system, the role of HSPs are discussed with a special focus on plant response to biotic and abiotic stresses, which will be helpful in the development of stress tolerance in plant crops.

Abstract:To adapt to fluctuations in light intensity, temperatures, and water/nutrient availability, plants have to dynamically and flexibly adjust their metabolism and growth processes. Specifically, hormone synthesis and signal transduction promptly respond to environmental stimuli. Understanding the mechanisms by which plants adapt to their environment is a hot spot of plant biology research. In this editorial, we provide a summary of recent advances in the roles and underlying mechanisms of abscisic acid (ABA) in coping with various stresses. Additionally, we highlight the functions of newly discovered hormones such as strigolactone. Furthermore, we emphasize future research directions aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of how plants maintain cellular homeostasis with the goal of improving crop yield in the background of global change.

Abstract:Plants are subjected to abiotic stresses throughout their developmental period. Abiotic stresses include drought, salt, heat, cold, heavy metals, nutritional elements, and oxidative stresses. Improving plant responses to various environmental stresses is critical for plant survival and perpetuation. WRKY transcription factors have special structures (WRKY structural domains), which enable the WRKY transcription factors to have different transcriptional regulatory functions. WRKY transcription factors can not only regulate abiotic stress responses and plant growth and development by regulating phytohormone signalling pathways but also promote or suppress the expression of downstream genes by binding to the W-box [TGACCA/TGACCT] in the promoters of their target genes. In addition, WRKY transcription factors not only interact with other families of transcription factors to regulate plant defence responses to abiotic stresses but also self-regulate by recognising and binding to W-boxes in their own target genes to regulate their defence responses to abiotic stresses. However, in recent years, research reviews on the regulatory roles of WRKY transcription factors in higher plants have been scarce and shallow. In this review, we focus on the structure and classification of WRKY transcription factors, as well as the identification of their downstream target genes and molecular mechanisms involved in the response to abiotic stresses, which can improve the tolerance ability of plants under abiotic stress, and we also look forward to their future research directions, with a view of providing theoretical support for the genetic improvement of crop abiotic stress tolerance.

The Role of Major Transcription Factors in Solanaceous Food Crops under Different Stress Conditions: Current and Future Perspectives

Abstract:Plant growth, development, and productivity are adversely affected by environmental stresses such as drought (osmotic stress), soil salinity, cold, oxidative stress, irradiation, and diverse diseases. These impacts are of increasing concern in light of climate change. Noticeably, plants have developed their adaptive mechanism to respond to environmental stresses by transcriptional activation of stress-responsive genes. Among the known transcription factors, DoF, WRKY, MYB, NAC, bZIP, ERF, ARF and HSF are those widely associated with abiotic and biotic stress response in plants. Genome-wide identification and characterization analyses of these transcription factors have been almost completed in major solanaceous food crops, emphasizing these transcription factor families which have much potential for the improvement of yield, stress tolerance, reducing marginal land and increase the water use efficiency of solanaceous crops in arid and semi-arid areas where plant demand more water. Most importantly, transcription factors are proteins that play a key role in improving crop yield under water-deficient areas and a place where the severity of pathogen is very high to withstand the ongoing climate change. Therefore, this review highlights the role of major transcription factors in solanaceous crops, current and future perspectives in improving the crop traits towards abiotic and biotic stress tolerance and beyond. We have tried to accentuate the importance of using genome editing molecular technologies like CRISPR/Cas9, Virus-induced gene silencing and some other methods to improve the plant potential in giving yield under unfavorable environmental conditions.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses restrict plant growth and development, and reduce harvest index of many crop species worldwide. Maintenance of native conformation of proteins and reducing the accumulation of non-native proteins are imperative for survival under stress conditions as such stresses frequently lead to protein aggregation causing metabolic dysfunction. Heat shock proteins (HSP) play a key role in conferring abiotic stress tolerance. Plants protect themselves from numerous stresses by inducing HSP, besides some stress-responsive proteins, suggesting analogous response mechanisms. A close association between the HSP and ROS also co-exists, indicating that plants have evolved to gain a higher degree of regulation over ROS toxicity and can use ROS as elicitor to induce HSP for better adaptations through activating an array of molecules. Therefore, unraveling the mechanisms of plant response against various stress and the role of HSP in acquired stress tolerance is utmost important to delineate their specific function as a part of stress-responsive module. The HSP have been well characterized in different crop species, albeit the knowledge about their correlation with genome sequence information as well as their functional plasticity is limited.

Abstract:Agricultural production continues to be constrained by a number of biotic and abiotic factors that can reduce crop yield quantity and quality. Potassium (K) is an essential nutrient that affects most of the biochemical and physiological processes that influence plant growth and metabolism. It also contributes to the survival of plants exposed to various biotic and abiotic stresses. The following review focuses on the emerging role of K in defending against a number of biotic and abiotic stresses, including diseases, pests, drought, salinity, cold and frost and waterlogging. The availability of K and its effects on plant growth, anatomy, morphology and plant metabolism are discussed. The physiological and molecular mechanisms of K function in plant stress resistance are reviewed. This article also evaluates the potential for improving plant stress resistance by modifying K fertilizer inputs and highlights the future needs for research about the role of K in agriculture.

Abstract:Agriculture production faces many abiotic stresses, mainly drought, salinity, low and high temperature. These abiotic stresses inhibit plants' genetic potential, which is the cause of huge reduction in crop productivity, decrease potent yields for important crop plants by more than 50% and imbalance agriculture's sustainability. They lead to changes in the physio-morphological, molecular, and biochemical nature of the plants and change plants' regular metabolism, which makes them a leading cause of losses in crop productivity. These changes in plant systems also help to mitigate abiotic stress conditions. To initiate the signal during stress conditions, sensor molecules of the plant perceive the stress signal from the outside and commence a signaling cascade to send a message and stimulate nuclear transcription factors to provoke specific gene expression. To mitigate the abiotic stress, plants contain several methods of avoidance, adaption, and acclimation. In addition to these, to manage stress conditions, plants possess several tolerance mechanisms which involve ion transporters, osmoprotectants, proteins, and other factors associated with transcriptional control, and signaling cascades are stimulated to offset abiotic stress-associated biochemical and molecular changes. Plant growth and survival depends on the ability to respond to the stress stimulus, produce the signal, and start suitable biochemical and physiological changes. Various important factors, such as the biochemical, physiological, and molecular mechanisms of plants, including the use of microbiomes and nanotechnology to combat abiotic stresses, are highlighted in this article.
