Abstract:We propose a two-bit reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication system and further design a prototyping system to perform practical measurement under multiple different scenarios. The carrier frequency is set at 3.5 GHz, and the RIS array possesses 16 16 units, each of which adopts two-bit phase quantization. We× adopt a self-developed broadband intelligent communication system 40MHz-Net (BICT-40N) terminal to fully acquire the channel information. The terminal mainly consists of a baseband board and a radio frequency (RF) front-end board, where the latter is capable of achieving 26dB transmitting link gain and 33dB receiving link gain. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is used, where the bandwidth is 40MHz and the subcarrier spacing is 625KHz. The terminal also supports a series of modulation modes, including QPSK, QAM, etc. Through tests, we demonstrate several properties and functions of the RIS as below. Specifically, we test both the static and the dynamic power consumption of the RIS. If the RIS codebook switching frequency increases 1KHz, then the dynamic power consumption of the whole RIS array will increase about 1mW. Besides, we verify the existence of the imaging interference in RIS-aided systems, where two-bit phase quantization can suppress the imaging interference about 10 dBm. In addition, we demonstrate that the RIS can significantly improve the channel stationarity compared to the metal plate.
