Abstract:Motivated by observations of localized electrostatic wavepackets by the Voyager 1 and 2 and Cassini missions in Saturn's magnetosphere, we have investigated the evolution of modulated electrostatic wavepackets in a dusty plasma environment. The well-known dust-ion acoustic (DIA) mode was selected to explore the dynamics of multi-dimensional structures, by means of a Davey-Stewartson (DS) model, by taking into account the presence of a highly energetic (suprathermal, kappa-distributed) electron population in combination with heavy (immobile) dust in the background. The modulational (in)stability profile of DIA wavepackets for both negative as well as positive dust charge is investigated. A set of explicit criteria for modulational instability (MI) to occur is obtained. Wavepacket modulation properties in 3D dusty plasmas are shown to differ from e.g. Maxwellian plasmas in 1D. Stronger negative dust concentration results in a narrower instability window in the $K$ (perturbation wavenumber) domain and a suppressed growth rate. In the opposite manner, the instability growth rate increases for higher positive dust concentrations and the instability window gets larger. In a nutshell, negative dust seems to suppress instability while positive dust appears to favor the amplitude modulation instability mechanism.

A Statistical Survey of Low‐Frequency Magnetic Fluctuations at Saturn

Abstract:Low‐frequency waves are closely related to magnetospheric energy dissipation processes. The Cassini spacecraft explored Saturn's magnetosphere for over 13 years, until September 2017, covering a period of more than a complete solar cycle. Using this rich heritage data set, we systematically investigated key physical parameters of low‐frequency waves in Saturn's magnetosphere, including their local time distribution and the dependence on solar activity. We found that the wave activity peaked in the near noon sector. For the nightside, the wave intensity also appeared to peak pre and postmidnight. Due to the limited local time coverage for each solar phase, we were not able to draw a firm conclusion on the wave's dependence on solar activity. In general, the wave power showed a monotonically decreasing trend toward larger distances in nightside sectors especially during the declining phase, which implied that low‐frequency waves mainly originate from the relatively inner regions of the magnetosphere. On the dayside, stronger waves were mostly located at/within ∼25 Rs, near the magnetopause. The study shows a global picture of low‐frequency waves in Saturn's magnetosphere, providing important implications for how magnetospheric energy dissipates into Saturn's polar ionosphere and atmosphere.

Abstract:We study wave instability in an collisionless, rarefied hot plasma (e.g. solar wind or corona). We consider the anisotropy produced by the magnetic field, when the thermal gas pressures across and along the field become unequal. We apply the 16-moment transport equations (obtained from the Boltzmann-Vlasov kinetic equation) including the anisotropic thermal fluxes. The general dispersion relation for the incompressible wave modes is derived. It is shown that a new, more complex wave spectrum with stable and unstable behavior is possible, in contrast to the classic fire-hose modes obtained in terms of the 13-moment integrated equations.

Abstract:Near-parallel and highly oblique magnetosonic/whistler (M/W) mode waves are frequently observed in solar wind and interplanetary shocks. These observed waves are usually analyzed by the plasma kinetic and fluid theories. This study compares the dispersion surface and electromagnetic responses of the M/W mode wave under both kinetic and fluid theories in the plasmas with beta(p) = beta(e) similar or equal to 1 in detail. In comparison with the kinetic theory, it proposes that the hot fluid theory is suitable to obtain the dispersion relation, the ratio of the parallel to perpendicular magnetic fluctuation B-z/B-perpendicular to, and the ratio of the electric to magnetic fluctuation E/B. Except the near-parallel low-frequency M/W mode, the hot fluid theory would be used to calculate the ratio between two magnetic fluctuations perpendicular to the wave vector B-1/B-2, the magnetic helicity sigma, and the ratio of the parallel to perpendicular electric fluctuation E-z/E-perpendicular to of the M/W mode waves. The cold fluid theory is good at describing the magnetic responses including B-z/B-perpendicular to, B-1/B-2, and sigma, but it underestimates omega, E/B, and E-z/E-perpendicular to for the obliquely propagating M/W mode wave. Furthermore, both hot and cold fluid theories can obtain the ratio of the longitudinal to transverse electric fluctuation relative to the wave vector E-L/E-P of the obliquely propagating low-frequency M/W mode. These results provide an indicator about how to choose the adequate theory to analyze the observations of the M/W mode waves in the solar wind and interplanetary shocks. Besides, from the dispersion surface in kinetic theory, it shows that the relative weak damping arises for the low-frequency branch at the angle around 0 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees and for the high-frequency branch with omega similar to [omega(cp), 300 omega(cp)] at the normal angle smaller than 60 degrees, which indicates the possible angle and frequency of the freely propagating M/W mode waves. Abstract:A planet's magnetosheath extends from downstream of its bow shock up to the magnetopause where the solar wind flow is deflected around the magnetosphere and the solar wind embedded magnetic field lines are draped. This makes the region an important site for plasma turbulence, instabilities, reconnection and plasma depletion layers. A relatively high Alfvén Mach number solar wind and a polar-flattened magnetosphere make the magnetosheath of Saturn both physically and geometrically distinct from the Earth's. The polar flattening is predicted to affect the magnetosheath magnetic field structure and thus the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. Here we investigate the magnetic field in the magnetosheath with the expectation that polar flattening is manifested in the overall draping pattern. We compare an accumulation of Cassini data between 2004 and 2010 with global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations and an analytical model representative of a draped field between axisymmetric boundaries. The draping patterns measured are well captured and in broad agreement for given upstream conditions with those of the MHD simulations (which include polar flattening). The deviations from the analytical model, based on no polar flattening, suggest that non-axisymmetry is invariably a key feature of the magnetosphere's global structure. Our results show a comprehensive overview of the configuration of the magnetic field in a non-axisymmetric magnetosheath as revealed by Cassini. We anticipate our assessment to provide an insight to this barely studied interface between a high Alfvénic bow shock and a dynamic magnetosphere.

Abstract:Kinetic‐scale magnetic dips (KSMDs), with a significant depression in magnetic field strength, and scale length close to and less than one proton gyroradius, were reported in the turbulent plasmas both in recent observation and numerical simulation studies. These KSMDs likely play important roles in energy conversion and dissipation. In this study, we present observations of the KSMDs that are labeled whistler mode waves, electrostatic solitary waves, and electron cyclotron waves in the magnetosheath. The observations suggest that electron temperature anisotropy or beams within KSMD structures provide free energy to generate these waves. In addition, the occurrence rates of the waves are higher in the center of the magnetic dips than at their edges, implying that the KSMDs might be the origin of various kinds of waves. We suggest that the KSMDs could provide favorable conditions for the generation of waves and transfer energy to the waves in turbulent magnetosheath plasmas.

Abstract:A comprehensive theoretical model for a homogeneous plasma system of hot, tenuous Maxwellian ring-distributed protons and the cold background of Maxwellian ions and electrons is used to study the resonant instabilities of magnetosonic (MS) waves. The perpendicular velocity integrals associated with the Maxwellian ring distribution have no analytical solution, hence, are solved numerically, while the parallel velocity integrals are solved analytically by invoking series expansion of the plasma dispersion function. For the plasma parameters relevant to Earth's inner magnetosphere, the theoretical model generates MS waves with frequencies from 5 times the local proton cyclotron frequency to above the lower hybrid frequency for a propagation angle of 89.5°. Hydrogen (H + ) band electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves are also excited by the Maxwellian ring protons for the same set of plasma parameters. A detailed analysis reveals that a sufficiently large ring velocity, as well as a smaller perpendicular and parallel thermal velocity, can enhance the MS wave growth. The study also explores the role of background plasma parameters in modulating the waves. The present theoretical model reproduces the harmonics of the MS waves observed by the Van Allen Probes in the Earth's inner magnetosphere. Further, the model can generate MS waves in other plasma environments, e.g., Mars, where the presence of ring protons has been established by MAVEN in connection with the MS wave observations.

Abstract:The differential heating of electrons and ions by turbulence in weakly collisional magnetized plasmas and the scales at which such energy dissipation is most effective are still debated. Using a large data sample measured in Earth's magnetosheath by the magnetospheric multiscale mission and the coarse-grained energy equations derived from the Vlasov-Maxwell system, we find evidence of a balance over two decades in scales between the energy cascade and dissipation rates. The decline of the cascade rate at kinetic scales (in contrast with a constant one in the inertial range), is balanced by an increasing ion and electron heating rates, estimated via the pressure strain. Ion scales are found to contribute most effectively to ion heating, while electron heating originates from both ion and electron scales. These results can potentially impact the current understanding of particle heating in turbulent magnetized plasmas as well as their theoretical and numerical modeling. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.235201 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Jupiter's magnetosheath is a natural yet complex laboratory for analyzing compressible plasma turbulence. Recent observations by the Juno mission provide a promising opportunity for the first time to reckon the energy cascade rate in the magnetohydrodynamic scales in the vicinity of Jupiter's space. In the present work, a two-dimensional model is constructed for a whistler wave that is nonlinearly coupled with a wave magnetic field via ion density perturbation. The dynamics of whistler wave propagating in the direction of the magnetic field are derived within the limit of the two-fluid modeling approach. The magnetic field localization along with magnetic field spectra and spectral slope variations are estimated to realize the turbulence generation and energy cascade from large to small scales in the Jovian magnetosheath region. The simulated magnetic field spectrum in the wave number (in the unit of ion inertial length ρi) consists of turbulence in the inertial range with a spectral slope of -1.4 and a spectral knee at kρi = 1. Subsequently, the spectral slope increases to -2.6 and the spectrum becomes steeper. The simulated magnetic field spectrum in the wave number is further translated into the frequency domain using the whistler wave dispersion relation and by considering the Taylor frozen-in condition. The analytically estimated magnetic field spectrum slopes, i.e., -1.8 and -4.2 at low and high frequencies are further compared with recent Juno mission observations. The comparison further affirms the existence of Kolmogorov scaling, a spectral knee, and steepening in the spectrum at high frequencies. Furthermore, it is found that the two-fluid model can reasonably simulate the turbulence effects in Jovian magnetosheath in terms of magnetic field spectral distribution in wave number and frequency domains.

Abstract:Recent research has shown that distinct physical regions in the Venusian induced magnetosphere are recognizable from the variations of strength and of wave/fluctuation activity of the magnetic field. In this paper the statistical properties of magnetic fluctuations are investigated in the Venusian magnetosheath, terminator, and wake regions. The latter two regions were not visited by previous missions. We found 1/f fluctuations in the magnetosheath, large‐scale structures near the terminator and more developed turbulence further downstream in the wake. Location independent short‐tailed non‐Gaussian statistics was observed.

Abstract:A comprehensive overview is presented of recent observational and theoretical results on solar wind structures and fluctuations and magnetohydrodynamic waves and turbulence, with preference given to phenomena in the inner heliosphere. Emphasis is placed on the progress made in the past decade in the understanding of the nature and origin of especially small-scale, compressible and incompressible fluctuations. Turbulence models to describe the spatial transport and spectral transfer of the fluctuations in the inner heliosphere are discussed, and results from direct numerical simulations are dealt with. Intermittency of solar wind fluctuations and their statistical distributions are briefly investigated. Studies of the heating and acceleration effects of the turbulence on the background wind are critically surveyed. Finally, open questions concerning the origin, nature and evolution of the fluctuations are listed, and possible avenues and perspectives for future research are outlined.
Interactions Between Energetic Electrons and Realistic Whistler Mode Waves in the Jovian Magnetosphere

Abstract:The role of plasma waves in shaping the intense Jovian radiation belts is not well understood. In this study we use a realistic wave model based on an extensive survey from the Plasma Wave Investigation on the Galileo spacecraft to calculate the effect of pitch angle and energy diffusion on Jovian energetic electrons due to upper and lower band chorus. Two Earth-based models, the Full Diffusion Code and the Versatile Electron Radiation Belt code, are adapted to the case of the Jovian magnetosphere and used to resolve the interaction between chorus and electrons at L = 10. We also present a study of the sensitivity to the latitudinal wave coverage and initial electron distribution. Our analysis shows that the contribution to the electron dynamics from upper band chorus is almost negligible compared to that from lower band chorus. For 100keV electrons, we observe that diffusion leads to redistribution of particles toward lower pitch angles with some particle loss, which could indicate that radial diffusion or interchange instabilities are important. For energies above >500keV, an initial electron distribution based on observations is only weakly affected by chorus waves. Ideally, we would require the initial electron phase space density before transport takes place to assess the importance of wave acceleration, but this is not available. It is clear from this study that the shape of the electron phase space density and the latitudinal extent of the waves are important for both electron acceleration and loss.
