Abstract:This paper establishes calculus upon two physical facts: (1) any average velocity is always between two instantaneous velocities, and (2) the motion of an object is determined once its velocity has been determined. It directly defines derivative and definite integral on an ordered field, proves the fundamental theorem of calculus with no auxiliary conditions, easily reveals the common properties of derivatives, and obtains differentiation formulas for elementary functions. Further discussion shows that the new definitions are in accord with the traditional concepts for continuously differentiable functions. This is a result of the authors' research in the field of educational mathematics, which hopes to provide a more elementary and effective way to teach calculus.

The fundamental theorem of calculus in differential rings

Abstract:In this paper, we study the consequences of the fundamental theorem of calculus from an algebraic point of view. For functions with singularities, this leads to a generalized notion of evaluation. We investigate properties of such integro-differential rings and discuss many examples. We also construct corresponding integro-differential operators and provide normal forms via rewrite rules. They are then used to derive several identities and properties in a purely algebraic way, generalizing well-known results from analysis. In identities like shuffle relations for nested integrals and the Taylor formula, additional terms are obtained that take singularities into account. Another focus lies on treating basics of linear ODEs in this framework of integro-differential operators. These operators can have matrix coefficients, which allow to treat systems of arbitrary size in a unified way. In the appendix, using tensor reduction systems, we give the technical details of normal forms and prove them for operators including other functionals besides evaluation.

Abstract:A very small amount of K\"ahler algebra (i.e. Clifford algebra of differential forms) in the real plane makes x + ydxdy emerge as a factor between the differentials of the Cartesian and polar coordinates, largely replacing the concept of complex variable. The integration on closed curves of closed 1-forms on multiply connected regions takes us directly to a real plane version of the theorem of residues. One need not resort to anything like differentiation and integration with respect to x + ydxdy. It is a matter of algebra and integration of periodic functions. We then derive Cauchy's integral formulas, including the ones for the derivatives. Additional complex variable theory of general interest for phyicists is then trivial. The approach is consistent with the Weierstrass point of view: power series expansions, even if explicit expressions are not needed. By design, this approach cannot replace integrations that yield complex results. These can be obtained with an approach based on the Cauchy point of view, where the Cauchy-Riemann conditions come first and the theorem of residues comes last.

Abstract:We introduce a formalism to analyze partially defined functions between ordered sets. We show that our construction provides a uniform and conceptual approach to all the main definitions encountered in elementary real analysis including Dedekind cuts, limits and continuity.

A Comprehensive Overview of the Lebesgue Differentiation Theorem in Coq

Abstract:Formalization of real analysis offers a chance to rebuild traditional proofs of important theorems as unambiguous theories that can be interactively explored. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the Lebesgue Differentiation Theorem formalized in the Coq proof assistant, from which the first Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (FTC) for the Lebesgue integral is obtained as a corollary. Proving the first FTC in this way has the advantage of decomposing into loosely-coupled theories of moderate size and of independent interest that lend themselves well to incremental and collaborative development. We explain how we formalize all the topological constructs and all the standard lemmas needed to eventually relate the definitions of derivability and of Lebesgue integration of MathComp-Analysis, a formalization of analysis developed on top of the Mathematical Components library. In the course of this experiment, we substantially enrich MathComp-Analysis and even devise a new proof for Urysohn's lemma.

Abstract:We generalise the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus to higher dimensions. Our generalisation is based on the observation that the antiderivative of a function of $n$-variables is a solution of a partial differential equation of order $n$ generalising the classical case. The generalised Fundamental Theorem of Calculus then states that the $n$-dimensional integrals over $n$-dimensional axis-parallel rectangular hypercuboids is given by a combinatorial formula evaluating the antiderivative on the vertices of the hypercuboid.

Abstract:We present a new duality theory for non-convex variational problems, under possibly mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The dual problem reads nicely as a linear programming problem, and our main result states that there is no duality gap. Further, we provide necessary and sufficient optimality conditions, and we show that our duality principle can be reformulated as a min–max result which is quite useful for numerical implementations. As an example, we illustrate the application of our method to a celebrated free boundary problem. The results were announced in Bouchitté and Fragalà (C R Math Acad Sci Paris 353(4):375–379, 2015).

Abstract:This note tries to show that a re-examination of a first course in analysis, using the more sophisticated tools and approaches obtained in later stages, can be a real fun for experts, advanced students, etc. We start by going to the extreme, namely we present two proofs of the Extreme Value Theorem: "the programmer proof" that suggests a method (which is practical in down-to-earth settings) to approximate, to any required precision, the extreme values of the given function in a metric space setting, and an abstract space proof ("the level-set proof") for semicontinuous functions defined on compact topological spaces. Next, in the intermediate part, we consider the Intermediate Value Theorem, generalize it to a wide class of discontinuous functions, and re-examine the meaning of the intermediate value property. The trek reaches the final frontier when we discuss the Uniform Continuity Theorem, generalize it, re-examine the meaning of uniform continuity, and find the optimal delta of the given epsilon. Abstract:We introduce the Frenet theory of curves in dual space $\d^3$. After defining the curvature and the torsion of a curve, we classify all curves in dual plane with constant curvature. We also establish the fundamental theorem of existence in the theory of dual curves, proving that there is a dual curve with prescribed curvature and torsion. Finally we classify all dual curves with constant curvature and torsion.

Abstract:We propose a sheaf-theoretic approach to the theory of differential calculi on quantum principal bundles over non-affine bases. After recalling the affine case we define differential calculi on sheaves of comodule algebras as sheaves of covariant bimodules together with a morphism of sheaves -the differential- such that the Leibniz rule and surjectivity hold locally. The main class of examples is given by covariant calculi over quantum flag manifolds, which we provide via an explicit Ore extension construction. In a second step we introduce principal covariant calculi by requiring a local compatibility of the calculi on the total sheaf, base sheaf and the structure Hopf algebra in terms of exact sequences. In this case Hopf–Galois extensions of algebras lift to Hopf–Galois extensions of exterior algebras with compatible differentials. In particular, the examples of principal (covariant) calculi on the quantum principal bundles and over the projective space are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Pour $K$ un corps global (corps de nombres ou corps de fonctions d'une variable sur un corps fini $F$), on dispose de théorèmes de dualité classiques (Tate, Poitou, Nakayama) pour la cohomologie galoisienne à valeurs dans des tores et des modules abéliens finis. Nous établissons de tels théorèmes pour $K$ le corps des fonctions d'une courbe projective et lisse sur le corps $F={\bf C}((t))$ des séries formelles en une variable sur le corps des complexes. Cela permet de contrôler le défaut du principe de Hasse et l'approximation faible pour les espaces homogènes sous un tore. Il y a ici des différences avec le cas classique ($K$ corps global), et aussi avec le cas récemment étudié où $K$ est un corps de fonctions d'une variable sur un corps $p$-adique. Par exemple, la $K$-rationalité d'un tore n'implique pas ici la validité du principe de Hasse pour ses espaces principaux homogènes. ---------------- Over a global field $K$ (number field, or function field of a curve over a finite field $F$), arithmetic duality theorems for the Galois cohomology of tori and finite Galois modules have long been known. More recent work investigates the case where $K$ is the function fields of of a curve over a $p$-adic field. For $K$ the function field of a curve over the formal series field $F={\bf C}((t))$, we establish analogous duality theorems. We thus control the obstruction to the local-global principle and to weak approximation for homogeneous spaces of tori. There are differences with the afore described cases. For example the Hasse principle need not hold for principal homogeneous spaces of a $K$-rational torus.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the DC calculus introduced by Perelman on finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below. Among other things, our results allow us to define the Hessian and the Laplacian of DC functions (including distance functions as a particular instance) as a measure-valued tensor and a Radon measure respectively. We show that these objects share various properties with their analogues on smooth Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a complete non-archimedean valuation field of characteristic $0$, with non-trivial valuation, equipped with (possibly multiple) commuting bounded derivations. We prove a decomposition theorem for finite differential modules over $K$, where decompositions regarding the extrinsic subsidiary $\partial$-generic radii of convergence in the sense of Kedlaya-Xiao. Our result is a refinement of a previous decomposition theorem due to Kedlaya and Xiao. As a key step in the proof, we prove a decomposition theorem in a stronger form in the case where $K$ is equipped with a single derivation. To achieve this goal, we construct an object $f_{0*}L_0$ representing the usual dual functor and study some filtrations of $f_{0*}L_0$, which is used to construct the direct summands appearing in our decomposition theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, a short review of the calculus of exact finite-differences of integer order is proposed. The finite-difference operators are called the exact finite-differences of integer orders, if these operators satisfy the same characteristic algebraic relations as standard differential operators of the same order on some function space. In this paper, we prove theorem that this property of the exact finite-differences is satisfies for the space of simple entire functions on the real axis (i.e., functions that can be expanded into power series on the real axis). In addition, new results that describe the exact finite-differences beyond the set of entire functions are proposed. A generalized expression of exact finite-differences for non-entire functions is suggested. As an example, the exact finite-differences of the square root function is considered. The use of exact finite-differences for numerical and computer simulations is not discussed in this paper. Exact finite-differences are considered as an algebraic analog of standard derivatives of integer order.
