Abstract:In this paper we develop general formulas for the subdifferential of the pointwise supremum of convex functions, which cover and unify both the compact continuous and the non-compact non-continuous settings. From the non-continuous to the continuous setting, we proceed by a compactification-based approach which leads us to problems having compact index sets and upper semi-continuously indexed mappings, giving rise to new characterizations of the subdifferential of the supremum by means of upper semicontinuous regularized functions and an enlarged compact index set. In the opposite sense, we rewrite the subdifferential of these new regularized functions by using the original data, also leading us to new results on the subdifferential of the supremum. We give two applications in the last section, the first one concerning the nonconvex Fenchel duality, and the second one establishing Fritz-John and KKT conditions in convex semi-infinite programming.

Set-Valued and Variational Analysis

Abstract:We provide new characterizations of the -subdifferential of the supremum of an arbitrary family of convex functions. The resulting formulas only involve approximate subdifferentials of adequate convex combinations of the data functions. Families of convex functions with a concavity-like property are introduced and their relationship with affine models is studied. The role of the lower semi-continuity of the data functions is also analyzed.

Abstract:An integral-like representation is provided for the -subdifferential of the supremum of an arbitrary family of convex functions. Our characterizations are expressed through appropriate discrete sums performed on the data functions 's together with specific singular measures operating on them. Moreover, as long as the underlying space is a reflexive Banach space or a separable normed space, we substitute these additional measures with related limits that involve the data functions. All the objects involved in our characterizations rely intrinsically on the data functions that are (almost) active at the reference point.

Abstract:In the paper, we extend the widely used in optimization theory decoupling techniques to infinite collections of functions. Extended concepts of uniform lower semicontinuity and firm uniform lower semicontinuity as well as the new concepts of weak uniform lower semicontinuity and robust infimum are discussed. We study the uniform and robust minimum, and provide conditions under which these minimality concepts reduce to the conventional one. The main theorem gives fuzzy subdifferential necessary conditions (multiplier rules) for a quasiuniform local minimum of the sum of an infinite collection of functions without the traditional Lipschitz continuity assumptions. We consider a general infinite convex optimization problem, and develop a methodology for closing the duality gap and guaranteeing strong duality. In this setting, application of the fuzzy multiplier and sum rules for infinite sums produces general optimality conditions/multiplier rules.

Abstract:This paper deals with the regularization of the sum of functions defined on a locally convex spaces through their closed-convex hulls in the bidual space. Different conditions guaranteeing that the closed-convex hull of the sum is the sum of the corresponding closed-convex hulls are provided. These conditions are expressed in terms of some epsilon-subdifferential calculus rules for the sum. The case of convex functions is also studied, and exact calculus rules are given under additional continuity/qualifications conditions. As an illustration, a variant of the proof of the classical Rockafellar theorem on convex integration is proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, we study $$\sigma $$-subdifferentials of $$\sigma $$-convex functions. Two equivalent conditions for $$\sigma $$-convexity are given. The formula for the $$\sigma $$-subdifferential of a sum of two functions is established. In terms of $$\sigma $$-subdifferential and Clarke’s normal cone, some Fermat’s rules for minimization problems are obtained.

Abstract:Subdifferentials (in the sense of convex analysis) of matrix-valued functions defined on that are convex with respect to the Löwner partial order can have a complicated structure and might be very difficult to compute even in simple cases. The aim of this paper is to study subdifferential calculus for such functions and properties of their subdifferentials. We show that many standard results from convex analysis no longer hold true in the matrix-valued case. For example, in this case the subdifferential of the sum is not equal to the sum of subdifferentials, the Clarke subdifferential is not equal to the subdifferential in the sense of convex analysis, etc. Nonetheless, it is possible to provide simple rules for computing nonempty subsets of subdifferentials (in particular, individual subgradients) of convex matrix-valued functions in the general case and to completely describe subdifferentials of such functions defined on the real line. As a by-product of our analysis, we derive some interesting properties of convex matrix-valued functions, e.g. we show that if such function is nonsmooth, then its diagonal elements must be nonsmooth as well.

This study is motivated by applications to problems of vector and set optimization with various constraints in infinite dimensions. The main results establish new sum and chain rules for major subdifferential constructions associated with ordered set-valued mappings under appropriate qualification and sequentially normal compactness conditions.

Abstract:In this note we provide a full conjugacy and subdifferential calculus for convex convex-composite functions in finite-dimensional space. Our approach, based on infimal convolution and cone-convexity, is straightforward and yields the desired results under a verifiable Slater-type condition, with relaxed monotonicity and without lower semicontinuity assumptions on the functions in play. The versatility of our findings is illustrated by a series of applications in optimization and matrix analysis, including conic programming, matrix-fractional, variational Gram, and spectral functions.

Abstract:Motivated by the optimality principles for non-subdifferentiable optimization problems, we introduce new relative subdifferentials and examine some properties for relatively lower semicontinuous functions including $\epsilon$-regular subdifferential and limiting subdifferential relative to a set. The fuzzy sum rule for the relative $\epsilon$-regular subdifferentials and the sum rule for the relative limiting subdifferentials are established. We utilize these relative subdifferentials to establish optimality conditions for non-subdifferentiable optimization problems under mild constraint qualifications. Examples are given to demonstrate that the optimality conditions obtained work better and sharper than some existing results. We also provide different versions of mean value theorems via the relative subdifferentials and employ them to characterize the equivalences between the convexity relative to a set and the monotonicity of the relative subdifferentials of a non-subdifferentiable function.

Abstract:Level proximal subdifferential was introduced by Rockafellar recently as a tool for studying proximal mappings of possibly nonconvex functions. In this paper we give a systematic study of level proximal subdifferntial, characterize variational convexity of the function by locally firm nonexpansiveness of proximal mappings or locally relative monotonicity of level proximal subdifferential, and investigate pointwise Lipschitz smoothness of the function. Integration and single-valuedness of level proximal subdifferential are also examined.

Abstract:Abstract convexity generalises classical convexity by considering the suprema of functions taken from an arbitrarily defined set of functions. These are called the abstract linear (abstract affine) functions. The purpose of this paper is to study the abstract subdifferential. We obtain a number of results on the calculus of this subdifferential: summation and composition rules, and prove that under some reasonable conditions the subdifferential is a maximal abstract monotone operator. Another contribution of this paper is a counterexample that demonstrates that the separation theorem between two abstract convex sets is generally not true. The lack of the extension of separation results to the case of abstract convexity is one of the obstacles in the development of abstract convexity based numerical methods.

Abstract:In this paper, by revisiting intersection rules for normal cones, we give formulas for estimating or computing the Fréchet/Mordukhovich/Moreau–Rockafellar subdifferentials of optimal value functions of constrained parametric optimization problems under metric qualification conditions. The results are then applied to derive chain rules for composite functions in both convex and nonconvex situations. Illustrative examples and comparisons to existing results, including those of Mordukhovich and Shao (Trans Amer Math Soc 348:1235–1280, 1996), Mordukhovich et al. (Math Program Ser B 116:369–396, 2009) and of An and Jourani (J Optim Theory Appl 192:82–96, 2022), are also addressed.

Abstract:We consider the optimization problem $(P_{A})$ $\inf_{x\in X}\{f(x)+g(Ax)\}$ where $f$ and $g$ are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces $X$ and $Y$, respectively, and $A$ is a linear operator from $X$ to $Y$. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugated functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality and the strong converse Fenchel duality of $(P_{A})$ are provided. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the stable Fenchel duality and for the total Fenchel duality are also derived.

Abstract:The most important open problem in Monotone Operator Theory concerns the maximal monotonicity of the sum of two maximally monotone operators provided that Rockafellar's constraint qualification holds. In this paper, we prove the maximal monotonicity of $A+\partial f$ provided that $A$ is a maximally monotone linear relation, and $f$ is a proper lower semicontinuous convex function satisfying $\dom A\cap\inte\dom \partial f\neq\varnothing$. Moreover, $A+\partial f$ is of type (FPV). The maximal monotonicity of $A+\partial f$ when $\intdom A\cap\dom \partial f\neq\varnothing$ follows from a result by Verona and Verona, which the present work complements.
