Abstract:The Changjiang Delta (CD) is one of well-studied large deltas of critical socio-economical and ecological importance regionally and global representativeness. Cumulated field data and numerical modeling has facilitated scientific understanding of its hydro-morphodynamics at multiple spatial and time scales, but the changing boundary forcing conditions and increasing anthropogenic influences pose management challenges requiring integrated knowledge. Here we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the multi-scale deltaic hydro-morphodynamics, discuss their relevance and management perspectives in a global context, and identify knowledge gaps for future study. The CD is classified as a river-tide mixed-energy, muddy and highly turbid, fluvio-deltaic composite system involving large-scale land-ocean interacted processes. Its hydro-morphodynamic evolution exhibits profound temporal variations at the fortnightly, seasonal, and inter-annual time scales, and strong spatial variability between tidal river and tidal estuary, and between different distributary channels. As the river-borne sediment has declined >70%, the deltaic morphodynamic adaptation lags behind sediment decline because sediment redistribution within the delta emerges to play a role in sustaining tidal flat accretion. However, the deltaic channels have become narrower, deepened and growingly constrained under cumulated human activities, e.g., extensive embankment and construction of jetties and groins, possibly initiating a decrease in morphodynamic activities and sediment trapping efficiency. Overall, the CD undergoes transitions from net sedimentation and naturally slow morphodynamic adaptation to erosion and human-driven radical adjustment. A shift in management priority from delta development to ecosystem conservation provides an opportunity for restoring the resilience to flooding and erosion hazards. The lessons and identified knowledge gaps inform study and management of worldwide estuaries and deltas undergoing intensified human interferences.

Abstract:From the 2013 ECSA conference ‘Estuaries and Coastal Areas in Times of Intense Change’ a theme emerged that has ended up being the focus of this Special Issue of Estuarine Coastal and Shelf Science, namely ‘Changes to processes in estuaries and coastal waters due to intense multiple pressures’. Many parts of the world are continuing to experience unprecedented rates of economic growth, and those responsible for managing coastal and estuarine areas must respond accordingly. At the same time, global climate change and sea level rise are also continuing, placing new or more intense pressures on coastal areas that must be dealt with in ways that are as far as possible managed as a result of good scientific understanding. There are other pressures too, which depend on the system concerned. This article provides an overview of the papers contained within the Special Issue and provides a discussion of how these fit within the main theme of intense multiple stressors, considering how a balance can be achieved between the needs of various different stakeholders and interest groups, and the sustainability of the system concerned. We categorise the papers in four main groupings: (1) stressors related to sea level rise; (2) stressors related to changes in fresh water inputs; (3) stressors related to anthropogenic pollution; and (4) the use of indicators as a means of assessing the effects of stressors, and reflect on the fact that despite the diversity of different challenges and geographical regions involved many of the approaches and discussions contained within the Special Issue have strong similarities, leading to a set of overarching principles that should be considered when making recommendations on management strategies.

Abstract:After the construction of more than 50,000 dams, the Yangtze (Changjiang) Delta has been evaluated as the highest vulnerable delta in response to anthropogenic climate change, but most of existent assessments did not take adaptive measures and ecosystem feedbacks into consideration, leading to counterintuitive results. In this study, annual to decadal morphological changes in the North Branch were specifically investigated by using time-series satellite images from 1984 to 2018, and controlling factors and mechanism were analyzed in the context of complex human-earth interactions. The North Branch has naturally evolved from a main distributary channel before the 1840s to the present tide-dominated estuary, infilled continuously with a huge amount of sediments. Annually 102 +/- 7 Mt. sediment (1958-2009) was estimated to deposit in the North Branch, mostly sourced from erosion of the lower and outer estuarine channel. Recent land reclamation projects have further accelerated channel accretion by promoting tidal sandbars accretion and secondary channels siltation. Totally, 196 km(2) of intertidal wetland has been reclaimed in the period 1978-2018. Lavish land reclamation was carried out in the 1990s and 2000s to meet for boosting socioeconomic development in Shanghai and abide the law "no net loss in farmland", producing sharp decrease of saltmarsh and mudflat area. The overexploitation of wetland resources is very short in the Holocene delta life cycle. It is fortunate to see gradually renewing saltmarsh after the new policies have recently been strictly implemented by controlling land reclamation to meet the target of ecological civilization. In the secular human-earth duel, the recent technical and economic development gives human superiority to reduce exposure to natural hazards, but may induce ecological degradation and consequently adverse feedback to coastal societies. Therefore, we stress again to balance sustainable development between human society and coastal ecosystem, coining a new civilization in the Anthropocene.

Abstract:The Changjiang River estuarine-coastal ocean continuum is a well-studied system that is undergoing significant changes due to human activities and climate change. While research has improved our understanding of its ecological importance, the changing external forces present challenges that require integrated knowledge. Here, we provide a comprehensive summary of the natural and man-made stresses on the continuum and identify knowledge gaps for future study. The construction of dams has led to a decrease of approximately 70 % in sediment loads from the Changjiang River, resulting in seabed erosion and a reduction in organic carbon and pollutant reservoirs in the continuum. In contrast, nutrient fluxes from the Changjiang River have shown increasing trends since the 1960 s, leading to changes in nutrient conditions and ecological processes in the continuum. These changes have altered the biomass and community structure of phytoplankton, leading to frequent harmful algal blooms and shifts in dominant species from diatoms to dinoflagellates. We also outline the impacts of coastal engineering and wetland reclamation, which have altered coastal geography, destroyed wildlife habitats, and weakened the filtering effect on pollutants. Additionally, ocean warming has increased threats to the ecosystem, exacerbating harmful algal blooms and facilitating the release of semi-volatile pollutants. In our review of the ecological processes in the continuum, we categorize the changes into three stages: the 1950 s to mid-1980 s (initial state), mid-1980 s to early 2000 s (ecosystem destruction begins), and early 2000 s to the present (critical transition in the continuum). Future research should focus on understanding the ecological responses to these changing processes in the estuarine-coastal ocean continuum. As other continuum ecosystems worldwide may be at different stages, studying the response of the Changjiang River estuarine-coastal ocean continuum will provide a comprehensive case study.

Abstract:Ongoing coastal development and the prospect of severe climate change impacts present pressing estuary management and governance challenges. Robust approaches must recognise the intertwined social and ecological vulnerabilities of estuaries. Here, a new governance and management framework is proposed that recognises the integrated social-ecological systems of estuaries so as to permit transformative adaptation to climate change within these systems. The framework lists stakeholders and identifies estuarine uses and values. Goals are categorised that are specific to ecosystems, private property, public infrastructure, and human communities. Systematic adaptation management strategies are proposed with conceptual examples and associated governance approaches. Contrasting case studies are used to illustrate the practical application of these ideas. The framework will assist estuary managers worldwide to achieve their goals, minimise maladaptative responses, better identify competing interests, reduce stakeholder conflict and exploit opportunities for appropriate ecosystem restoration and sustainable development.

Abstract:The Changjiang (Yangtze River) Estuary plays an important role in the land–ocean interactions of East Asia, particularly in regard to the fate of land-derived materials and their impact on marine ecosystems in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. The 12 papers included in this special issue describe results from the MEcoPAM Study, an IMBER-China project, which occurred in 2011–2015. This project used a multi-disciplinary approach to understand ecosystem function of the Changjiang Estuary in response to multiple stressors (i.e. combined external forcings). The results presented here show that human activities in the watersheds have greatly changed the flux and variation of dissolved and particulate materials from the river. Further interactions between the Changjiang Watersheds and the East China Sea can dramatically modify the pathways of biogeochemistry and food web dynamics of the estuary and adjacent coastal environment at seasonal and inter-annual scales.

Abstract:The Amazon River delta may be currently characterized biophysically as a relatively preserved delta compared to the rampant vulnerability of many of the world’s large deltas. This status of relative preservation is reflected in a number of criteria: The still largely free-flowing nature of many of the rivers and the main stem of the Amazon that feed the delta in sediment, exceptional biodiversity, dominant shoreline accretion, and the absence of anthropogenically-generated subsidence. In this review, we show that these relatively reassuring conditions are progressively being called into question by the effects of dams on fluvial sediment supply to the delta, by increasing demographic, urban, and land development pressures in this still largely underpopulated delta, and by problems of governance that underplay aspects of basin-wide and deltaic environmental deterioration. A major challenge is that of bringing together these contrasting demands that are leading to the emergence of zones of environmental stress that test the resilience of this delta. An integral part of the strategy for the analysis of collective action, management, and conservation is that of considering the Amazon delta in terms of interacting socio-ecological systems. Pressures on the delta will be compounded in the future by decreasing fluvial sediment supply and sea-level rise. Although climate change is projected to generate surplus sediment, the rapid growth of dam constructions upstream of the delta will negatively impact the river’s sediment flux. Conservation and management of the Amazon River system aimed at keeping the delta resilient in the context of sea-level rise and reduction of sediment supply will require clear governance and better planning and anticipation, as well as socio-ecological integration. These are also requirements that will need to be implemented in the 1500 km-long coastal zone of the Guianas countries located west of the Amazon delta and the sediment dynamics and stability of which are largely determined by sediment supply from the Amazon.

Abstract:Natural estuarine wetland shorelines play a crucial role in coastal stabilization and preserving ecological security patterns. The effectiveness of estuarine shoreline engineering in reducing coastal erosion and maintaining the stability of ecosystem structures and functions is tightly linked to their types and structures. Although the living estuarine shorelines have received increasing attention, there have been few systematic literature reviews on the development process, research hotspots and future trends in this field. Here we summarized the literatures, and analyzed them in terms of annual publications, subject categories, co-cited journals, countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords based on OriginPro, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace softwares. Results showed that the studies on living estuarine shorelines have experienced a rapid development phase since 2004, which is mainly categorized into Environmental Sciences and Oceanography, and the research institutions and scholars are mainly from the USA and China. The effects of human activities and climate change on the structures and functions of estuarine ecosystems are the dominant topics. Furthermore, the nature-based management solutions have been proposed to improve the functions and services of estuarine ecosystems. Currently, the habitats of estuarine wetlands worldwide have undergone varying degrees of degradation, therefore, the ecological conservation and restoration of estuarine shorelines urgently require the active participation of the public. It is highly important to integrate multi-disciplinary and multi-technology approaches to construct nature-based, more resilient, multi-service synergistic, and composite living shorelines in coastal zones. The findings of this research can provide scientific guidelines for the adaptive management and conservation of estuarine wetlands.

Abstract:Over 1.3 billion people live on tropical coasts, primarily in developing countries. Many depend on adjacent coastal seas for food, and livelihoods. We show how trends in demography and in several local and global anthropogenic stressors are progressively degrading capacity of coastal waters to sustain these people. Far more effective approaches to environmental management are needed if the loss in provision of ecosystem goods and services is to be stemmed. We propose expanded use of marine spatial planning as a framework for more effective, pragmatic management based on ocean zones to accommodate conflicting uses. This would force the holistic, regional-scale reconciliation of food security, livelihoods, and conservation that is needed. Transforming how countries manage coastal resources will require major change in policy and politics, implemented with sufficient flexibility to accommodate societal variations. Achieving this change is a major challenge - one that affects the lives of one fifth of humanity.
