Abstract:Aeolian deposits are frequently used for palaeoenvironmental change studies. Their formation depends on an array of requirements: the supply of material suitable for aeolian transport and favorable conditions of sediment availability and wind strength. In order to infer palaeoenvironmental information from aeolian sand deposits these factors need to be carefully evaluated. We present a study from northern Chinese Hexi Corridor, based on 11 optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dated sediment sections. These represent interchanging aeolian and alluvial deposits under gravel surfaces and aeolian sand in dune fields interrupted by interdunal flood deposits. Investigations in two subareas reveal contrasting geomorphologic and sedimentary histories: (1) sediment deposition during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition (similar to 12 ka) followed by deflation during the Holocene and (2) frequent sediment recycling revealed by a wide spectrum of ages throughout the Holocene. The late glacial sediment pulse recorded in the western Hexi Corridor is attributed to high sediment supply, generated by efficient (peri-)glacial sediment production during glacial times in the adjacent Qilian Shan (<5700 m asl) and a moisture increase inducing the reworking of those (glacio-)fluvial deposits during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. The absence of a powerful reworking agent preserved these late glacial deposits in the western Hexi Corridor in contrast to moister eastern parts where Holocene sediment reworking prevailed.Geomorphological and hydrological preconditions of the subareas are discussed and reveal the controlling influence of fluvial processes on sand supply for the aeolian system. While a perennial drainage is missing in the drier western part, the Hei River drainage is fed by higher monsoonal precipitation in the central Hexi Corridor. It maintains a sediment recycling system and has ensured a sufficient sediment supply throughout the Holocene. The study promotes closer consideration of the fluvial influence on aeolian archives in palaeoenvironmental studies from central Asian and other drylands. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Discriminating Sediment Archives and Sedimentary Processes in the Arid Endorheic Ejina Basin, NW China Using a Robust Geochemical Approach

Abstract:Geochemical characteristics have been intensively used to assign sediment properties to paleoclimate and provenance. Nonetheless, in particular concerning the arid context, bulk geochemistry of different sediment archives and corresponding process interpretations are hitherto elusive. The Ejina Basin, with its suite of different sediment archives, is known as one of the main sources for the loess accumulation on the Chinese Loess Plateau. In order to understand mechanisms along this supra-regional sediment cascade, it is crucial to decipher the archive characteristics and formation processes. To address these issues, five profiles in different geomorphological contexts were selected. Analyses of X-ray fluorescence and diffraction, grain size, optically stimulated luminescence and radiocarbon dating were performed. Robust factor analysis was applied to reduce the attribute space to the process space of sedimentation history. Five sediment archives from three lithologic units exhibit geochemical characteristics as follows: (i) aeolian sands have high contents of Zr and Hf, whereas only Hf can be regarded as a valuable indicator to discriminate the coarse sand proportion; (ii) sandy loess has high Ca and Sr contents which both exhibit broad correlations with the medium to coarse silt proportions; (iii) lacustrine clays have high contents of felsic, ferromagnesian and mica source elements e.g., K, Fe, Ti, V, and Ni; (iv) fluvial sands have high contents of Mg, Cl and Na which may be enriched in evaporite minerals; (v) alluvial gravels have high contents of Cr which may originate from nearby Cr-rich bedrock. Temporal variations can be illustrated by four robust factors: weathering intensity, silicate-bearing mineral abundance, saline/alkaline magnitude and quasi-constant aeolian input. In summary, the bulk-composition of the late Quaternary sediments in this arid context is governed by the nature of the source terrain, weak chemical weathering, authigenic minerals, aeolian sand input, whereas pedogenesis and diagenesis exert only limited influences. Hence, this study demonstrates a practical geochemical strategy supplemented by grain size and mineralogical data, to discriminate sediment archives and thereafter enhance our ability to offer more intriguing information about the sedimentary processes in the arid central Asia. Gone with the tides? Reassessing possible eolian strata in the Paleoarchean Moodies Group in the context of the Archean eolian record

Abstract:It is unresolved when eolian processes began to significantly affect global mean sand composition and texture through abrasion and enhanced sorting. Reports of Proterozoic eolian textures and sedimentary structures are common, in particular from 1.8 Ga on, but the Archean (4.0–2.5 Ga) geologic record possesses only seven reported eolian occurrences which generally do not manifest more than a few diagnostic features of eolian transport. We investigate in detail sandstone units within the Moodies Group (ca. 3.22 Ga) of the Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa, one of the oldest well-preserved terrestrial–marine sandy successions. Eight examined locations show terrestrial facies associations, high degrees of compositional and textural maturity, and large-scale foresets; however, none show convincing evidence of eolian transport but several can be excluded with confidence. In comparison to recent eolian strata, grains are generally slightly too coarse-grained, too angular and mostly too poorly sorted. The common presence of shale laminations, granules, rare pebbles, and shale rip-up clasts demonstrates that the investigated strata were either of aqueous origin or had been formed by eolian processes but were subsequently aqueously reworked. This is vexing because the sandy-gravelly fluvial, coastal floodplain, and estuarine depositional environments of Moodies Group strata may have been hospitable to potentially powerful and long-lasting Archean eolian processes. Early Archean eolian strata may have had a limited depositional area, may have been extensively reworked, or formed under non-actualistic conditions. Thus, the significance of eolian processes on early Earth and their potential contribution to the high degree of textural and compositional maturity of Archean quartzarenites remains poorly constrained.

Abstract:The idea that dryland fluvial environments are somehow distinctive or even unique compared to fluvial environments in wetter and/or cooler climatic settings has arisen in much of the literature, despite the fact that drylands are themselves inherently diverse, covering a wide range of local climatic, tectonic, structural, lithological, and phytogeographical settings. Focusing on rivers in warm drylands, this chapter outlines the main characteristics of dryland rivers, including flow and sediment transport conditions, channel forms and dynamics, channel and floodplain sedimentology, and equilibrium and nonequilibrium behavior. Although dryland rivers are commonly ascribed a set of restricted characteristics that have been derived mainly from studies in short, steep, tectonically active catchments, investigations in larger, lower-gradient, tectonically stable catchments have revealed much greater diversity in river character both within and between drylands, and have demonstrated overlap with river characteristics in other climatic settings. With this global perspective, I argue that many previous statements regarding the distinctiveness of dryland river characteristics either can no longer be sustained as generalizations, or, at the very least, the geographical and geomorphological contexts for those generalizations need to be clarified. One of the key priorities for future research will be to identify and explain the spatial extent and frequency of occurrence of river styles across different drylands. In particular, research into the controls of meandering, straight, and anabranching rivers characteristic of some moderate-to low-energy Southern Hemisphere drylands has not only contributed to greater appreciation of the global diversity of dryland rivers but is also leading to a better understanding of rivers in general. Technological and methodological developments (especially in geochronology) are enhancing understanding of dryland river process, form, and change, and this will continue to facilitate interdisciplinary work in diverse scientific and applied contexts.

Abstract:Understanding the factors that control the temporal and spatial evolution of the Lower Triassic Buntsandstein Group, eastern France, is important not just for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction but also because it is an important reservoir for the lithium-rich geothermal brines in the Upper Rhine Graben region. The interval of interest in this study, the Lower Grès Vosgien Formation (LGV), is made up of c. 200 m of clastic deposits of mixed fluvial and aeolian origin. Given the proximity between the outcrops and the areas of mineral and heat exploration, this region offers a unique opportunity for quantitative analysis and correlation between outcrops and reservoir. The LGV is the thickest Formation in the Buntsandstein Group. However, hitherto, no detailed architectural analysis has been published to reveal the controlling factors of its depositional elements. In this study, high-resolution facies analysis was applied to thirteen outcrops, and a core, to quantify fluvial and aeolian depositional architectures, and to comprehend palaeoenvironmental conditions during their deposition. Two facies associations were identified. The fluvial channel facies association, composed mainly of sandstones deposited in poorly confined, occasionally ephemeral channels, corresponds to 93 % of the total thickness. The analysis of >800 sets of strata characterised by lower-, transitional-, and upper-flow regime sedimentary structures, distributed within different architectural elements, enabled the distinction of temporal and spatial variabilities, and an estimate of fluvial palaeohydraulic characteristics. The wind- and water-laid facies association, which accounts for 7 % of the total thickness, records an architecture controlled by a fluctuating water-table level, and ephemeral floods. Results revealed that aeolian dunes and sand sheets accumulated in distinct temporal moments. The vertical trends, recorded in the core, indicate an upward increase in the frequency of intercalations between the two facies associations, and a decrease in the occurrences of thicker cross-bedded sandstone sets of fluvial origin, which, associated with the overall retrogradational stacking pattern of the LGV, is interpreted as the preserved record of a large distributive fluvial system (DFS). The occurrence of laterally extensive aeolian deposits, overlying fluvial deposits, is often associated by authors with periods of relatively more arid conditions at a regional scale. However, evidence indicates channel belt avulsion as an alternative interpretation for the establishment of the two facies associations. The findings enhance the knowledge about the depositional controlling factors in braided fluvial and aeolian systems, and improves predictive models that account for reservoir heterogeneity in accumulated successions of this type.

A salty snapshot: extreme variations in basal erosion patterns preserved in a submarine channel

Abstract:The bases of active submarine channels are marked by large erosional features, such as knickpoints and plunge pools. However, their presence in ancient channel-fills has rarely been documented, so their importance in submarine channel morphodynamics requires investigation. Using seismic reflection data calibrated by wells from a buried submarine channel-fill, we document erosional features hundreds of metres long and tens of metres deep, here interpreted as knickpoints and a plunge pool, and provide a mechanistic process for their transfer into the stratigraphic record. Channel incision patterns are interpreted to record a transient uplift in an otherwise subsiding depocentre. Local structural complexities in the channel slope formed zones of preferential scouring. A switch to a depositional regime preserved the irregular channel base, inhibiting both the upstream migration of scours and smoothing of the channel base. The formation and preservation of these scours record the responses to salt tectonics and provide a unique snapshot of the formative processes of an ancient submarine channel. The presence of these exceptional basal scours indicates that headward erosion processes did not operate rapidly, challenging the paradigm that knickpoint migration controls channel evolution. Our results show that the primary erosion of the main channel surface and long-term channel evolution are both dominated by far more gradual processes.

Aeolian-fluvial Interplay History Recorded by Sediment Sequences from Huanghe Terrace in Semi-arid Environment During the Late Stage of Last Glacial Period

Abstract:The interactions of fluvial and Aeolian processes are a pronounced feature in dry land environments, which can significantly change Earth surface morphology. The interactions of fluvial and Aeolian processes are common in the Lanzhou-Yinchuan reach of Huanghe river catchment at present, but it is rarely reported in the geological time. Here, we analysis the sedimentology including grain size distribution of a sediment sequence on the T2 terrace of the Huanghe River in this area. Aeolian sand dunes (2-3.8 m thickness) situated between fluvial coarse sands and floodplain silts are distinguished, which show mass structure, and mainly composed of well sorted very fine sand. The poor sorting laminar silt mixed with clay and very fine silt covers these dunes. We consider this sediment unit (laminar silt) as floodplain sediment including some aeolian dust input, settling from static water. The grain size of the aeolian dune is slightly smaller than that of the underlying horizontal fluvial sand. Both of the amounts of the coarse and fine component in the sand dunes are less than that in the underlying fluvial sand. These may indicate that the aeolian sand dunes in this region are built through the wind eroding, sorting, carrying the underlying fluvial sand and accumulating in situ. The elemental compositions of the aeolian sand dunes are consistent with the underlying fluvial sand and different from the sandy loess in this area. This also indicates that the source of the dunes on the terrace is the fluvial sand below the dunes. The OSL ages show that the aeolian dunes were deposited during 21～16 ka, and the covering floodplain silts deposited during 14～13 ka. The correlation of the deposit of dunes with climate change records in this area show the sand dunes were built during the period of strong winter monsoon with cold and dry climate during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). And the dunes were covered by floodloam later, when the period of strong summer monsoon with warm and wet climate during the last deglaciation. The sediment sequence composed by fluvial gravel, sand, aeolian dune, floodloam on the second terrace of the Huanghe river in this area show the interactions of fluvial and Aeolian process as a response to the climate and environment changes since LGM in this semi-arid environments.
Wind-reworked fluvial deposits as an archaeological environment: the Agnes Banks Sand of the Quaternary Hawkesbury–Nepean sequence of southeast Australia

Abstract:The deposits of Sydney's rivers are thought to have experienced widespread aeolian modification during the Quaternary. The resultant sediments form archaeologically important landscapes upon which are found several of the oldest archaeological sites in the Sydney district. Unfortunately, little is known of the processes and products of aeolian reworking. The context of the archaeological discoveries is therefore enigmatic. This study focusses on the Agnes Banks Sand, a Cenozoic sand body that may represent the only sedimentary unit in the Sydney area that preserves reliable evidence of the action of aeolian processes on fluvial sediments. Our work confirms that the sands are indistinguishable from inland dune deposits worldwide, with the deposits reworked from alluvial sediments within and adjacent to the channel of the nearby Nepean River. The sands form east–west-aligned linear dunes, whilst the sediment body fines to the east, a pattern consistent with entrainment by westerly winds. Three other aeolian depositional bodies have been identified alongside the Hawkesbury–Nepean River. Together, these form an assemblage of source-bordering dunes that lies downwind of the river across the northern part of the Cumberland Basin. Deposition here began in Marine Isotope Stages 3–2 and continued into Marine Isotope Stage 1, a period corresponding with a general episode of dune activation across southeast Australia. Although it is widely believed that the Agnes Banks Sand was formed sometime between the Pliocene and the Middle Pleistocene, we present evidence that its deposition post-dates 65 ka and that the deposits are contemporaneous with the other fluvio-aeolian units in the catchment. The true importance of Agnes Banks, however, is as a type locality from which it has been possible to derive sedimentological and geomorphological signatures that may be applied to appraisals of the fluvio-aeolian record within (and perhaps beyond) the Sydney area.

Abstract:As major sites of carbon burial and remineralization, continental margins are key components of the global carbon cycle. However, heterogeneous sources of organic matter (OM) and depositional environments lead to complex spatial patterns in sedimentary organic carbon (OC) content and composition. To better constrain the processes that control OM cycling, we focus on the East Asian marginal seas as a model system, where we compiled extensive data on the OC content, bulk isotopic composition (δ13C and Δ14C), total nitrogen, and mineral surface area of surficial sediments from previous studies and new measurements. We developed a spatial machine learning modeling framework to predict the spatial distribution of these parameters and identify regions where sediments with similar geochemical signatures drape the seafloor (i.e., "isodrapes"). We demonstrate that both provenance (44%–77%) and hydrodynamic processes (22%–53%) govern the fate of OM in this margin. Hydrodynamic processes can either promote the degradation of OM in mobile mud‐belts or preserve it in stable mud‐deposits. The distinct isotopic composition of OC sources from marine productivity and individual rivers regulates the age and reactivity of OM deposited on the sea‐floor. The East Asian marginal seas can be separated into three main isodrapes: hydrodynamically energetic shelves with coarser‐grained sediment depleted in OC, OM‐enriched mud deposits, and a deep basin with fine‐grained sediments and aged OC affected by long oxygen exposure times and petrogenic input from rivers. This study confirms that both hydrodynamic processes and provenance should be accounted for to understand the fate of OC in continental margins.

Abstract:The Holocene, Ahead of Print. Aeolian-fluvial processes are crucial in shaping landforms. Despite the advancements in understanding the sedimentary processes of aeolian-fluvial interactions, the sedimentary patterns of these interactions are complex in spatiotemporal scale, and the records of Holocene small-scale aeolian-fluvial interaction sedimentary is insufficient, especially in the Tibetan Plateau region. Therefore, this study focuses on analyzing the sedimentary patterns of aeolian-fluvial interactions and their response to climate change in the Paiku Co basin of the southern Tibetan Plateau (TP). Through the examination of aeolian-fluvial sequences, Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating is utilized to establish a chronological framework. Furthermore, proxy indices are explored to identify potential sediment models and their reactions to climate change. The findings indicate that fluvial activity predominated during a relatively warm and wet period around 5.1–4.6 ka, while thicker aeolian sands accumulated extensively during 4.6–4.1 ka as the climate transitioned to cold and dry conditions. On a millennial scale, the aeolian-fluvial interaction sedimentation is characterized by alternating deposition of clay layers and medium to fine sand. This sedimentation pattern is predominantly influenced by climate change. Overall, the findings shed light on the complex coupling between aeolian and fluvial processes in response to past climate changes, which has important implications for understanding the landscape evolution and environmental changes in this sensitive high-altitude region.

Earth Surface Processes and Landforms

Abstract:Coastal dunes are found along the sandy coasts of oceans, seas, and large lakes all around the world. They are dynamic landforms that evolve along complex morphological and biological continua in response to a range on controls linked to climate, sea‐level, sediment movement, vegetation cover and land use. By collating research across the full spectrum of processes shaping different types and sizes of dunes and smaller aeolian bedforms, special issues can aid researchers to identify new research directions and methods emerging from the discipline. This editorial summarises the 25 contributions to the special issue Coastal dunes: links between aeolian processes and landform dynamics. We grouped the contributions into four broad themes: 1. Long term dune evolution, 2. Short term aeolian transport, 3. Research methods and 4. Coastal dune management. Contributions to the special issue demonstrate that research interest in coastal dunes, and particularly the impacts of human interventions on dunes, continues to grow. It also shows how aeolian research on coastal dunes covers a range of temporal and spatial scales, from ripple dynamics and instantaneous airflow‐transport processes to dune field evolution with rising sea levels and large‐scale dune stage shifts. We highlight potential avenues for future research including vegetation roughness characteristics and their effect on wind flow and sediment transport, the challenges of upscaling short‐ and small‐scale results to larger and longer spatiotemporal scales, and the study of both natural and managed dune landscapes.

Seawater chemistry of a modern subtropical ‘epeiric’ sea: Spatial variability and effects of organic decomposition

Abstract:Direct studies of recent epeiric seawater chemistry and their geological significance are relatively few compared to the far more abundant studies from ancient epeiric marine carbonates. Acknowledging the limitations of analogue studies in the modern glaciated world, we propose that the recent Abu Dhabi offshore and lagoonal areas share important attributes with the shallow-marine coastal zones of a subtropical epeiric carbonate sea. The study area in Abu Dhabi is dwarfed by the vast epeiric seas of the geological past, but its seawater properties and related geochemistry have relevance for paleoenvironmental interpretations for similar ancient systems. This study documents the geochemical properties of seawater along the Abu Dhabi coast, and discusses their trends within a spatial context. Results show a positive correlation between salinity, temperature, elemental concentrations, and oxygen isotopic composition of seawater, indicating a significant influence of evaporation on seawater chemistry. A distal-to-proximal negative correlation between seawater Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios may be related to a landward increase in abundance of high-Mg calcite foraminifera. After normalization to chloride, seawater elemental (Ca2+, Mg2+, Sr2+) concentrations and alkalinity show decreasing trends in a landward direction, consistent with seawater aging from the open marine to restricted lagoonal settings. Lower ΔAlk (alkalinity change) : ΔCa2+ (Ca2+ change) ratios in seawater compared with the theoretical value, and more negative δ13CDIC values relative to typical (sub)tropical oceans in the study area indicate an influence of factors apart from CaCO3 precipitation on properties of aged seawater. An input of alkalinity and 12C-enriched carbon by organic carbon decomposition (via sulfate reduction) during early diagenesis is proposed to account for these deviations from typical values. The input of alkalinity and 12C-enriched carbon by organic carbon decomposition may be further related to reduced seawater pCO2 and early-marine cementation. Findings discussed here suggest that organic carbon decomposition during early-marine diagenesis may influence the geochemical properties of the coastal areas of shallow epeiric seas, and thus assumedly produce significant differences in proxy data compared with those from carbonates deposited in open oceans.

Fluvial‐Aeolian Interaction and Compositional Variability in the River‐Fed Yarlung Tsangpo Dune System (southern Tibet)

Abstract:River-fed dune fields characterized by relatively low quartz content are much more common on Earth than generally assumed, and the aeolian dune field system in the Yarlung Tsangpo (Upper Brahmaputra) river catchment is considered a typical example. As one of the highest-altitude fluvial-aeolian systems on Earth, the dune fields in different wide tracts of the Yarlung Tsangpo valley, made of sand entirely blown from the adjacent river bed, provides an excellent natural laboratory in which to investigate the diverse factors controlling textural and compositional changes induced by aeolian processes. To this aim, the textural (grain-size, roundness) and compositional (petrography, heavy minerals) properties of multiple size classes of fluvial and aeolian sands were quantified. The results show that sediment composition is markedly controlled by grain size, with greater intrasample than intersample variability. Grain-size controlled compositional differences cannot be exclusively ascribed to hydraulic-sorting effects. Independent of their density or shape, quartz, sedimentary rock fragments, zircon, apatite, and epidote grains are observed to be on average smaller than feldspars, volcanic rock fragments, and pyroxenes. This indicates that the original size of minerals in source rocks also played a significant role, limiting their availability in finer (e.g., garnet) or coarser (e.g., apatite) classes. In the river-fed dune system, the lower content of phyllosilicates and higher grain roundness could represent useful criteria to distinguish aeolian from fluvial sand. The efficient aeolian abrasion of river-fed sediments on the Tibetan Plateau may be an effective mechanism for the production of dust deposited as vast loess covers during the Quaternary.

Abstract:Abstract The appearances of palaeosurfaces intercalated into palaeo-dune fields on Fuerteventura are multifaceted. Although reddened layers in these dune sediments might suggest that strong soil-formation processes have taken place, the combination of aridity and parent material, namely biogenic carbonate sand of shelf origin, reveals that strong soil formation seems unlikely. These sediments rather represent de- and recalcification processes only. Solely in the case of admixed material of volcanic origin and dust deposits further soil-forming processes seem to be possible. Hematite-rich Saharan dust contributes to reddish colouration of the palaeosurfaces. In addition, CaCO 3 -coated iron particles appear to be ingredients of dust being leached after deposition and transformed to hematite. Overall, we propose much weaker soil-forming processes during the Pleistocene than previously postulated. Our findings support the relevance of local environments. Carbonate sands of shelf origin hinder strong soil formation and the reddish layers separating dune generations are palaeosurfaces, which mainly consist of Saharan dust. After deposition of allochthonous material, these layers are overprinted by weak soil-forming processes. The formation of palaeosurfaces primarily depends on morphodynamically stable periods during limited sand supply. Our data suggest a cyclicity of processes in the following order: (1) sand accumulation, (2) dust accumulation and weak soil formation, and (3) water-induced erosion. For the Canary Islands, we support the assumption of glacial maxima being periods of increased levels of moisture. In combination with rising sea level, we propose that favorable conditions of surface stability occur immediately after glacial maxima during periods of starting transgression, whereas regression periods immediately after sea-level high stands seem to yield the highest sand supply for the study area.

Abstract:During expedition 202 aboard the RV Sonne in 2009, 39 seafloor surface sediment sites were sampled over a wide sector of the North Pacific and adjoining Bering Sea. The data served to infer land–ocean linkages of terrigenous sediment supply in terms of major sources and modes of sediment transport within an over-regional context. This is based on an integrated approach dealing with grain-size analysis, bulk mineralogy and clay mineralogy in combination with statistical data evaluation (end-member modelling of grain-size data, fuzzy cluster analysis of mineralogical data). The findings on clay mineralogy served to update those of earlier work extracted from the literature. Today, two processes of terrigenous sediment supply prevail in the study area: far-distance aeolian sediment supply to the pelagic North Pacific, and hemipelagic sediment dispersal from nearby land sources via ocean currents along the continental margins and island arcs. Aeolian particles show the finest grain sizes (clay and fine silt), whereas hemipelagic sediments have high abundances of coarse silt. Exposed sites on seamounts and the continental slope are partly swept by strong currents, leading to residual enrichment of fine sand. Four sediment sources can be distinguished on the basis of distinct index minerals revealed by statistical data analysis: dust plumes from central Asia (quartz, illite), altered materials from the volcanic regions of Kamchatka and the Aleutian Arc (smectite), detritus from the Alaskan Cordillera (chlorite, hornblende), and fluvial detritus from far-eastern Siberia and the Alaska mainland (quartz, feldspar, illite). These findings confirm those of former studies but considerably expand the geographic range of this suite of proxies as far south as 39°N in the open North Pacific. The present integrated methodological approach proved useful in identifying the major modern processes of terrigenous sediment supply to the study region. This aspect deserves attention in the selection of sediment core sites for future palaeoenvironmental reconstructions related to aeolian and glacial dynamics, as well as the recognition of palaeo-ocean circulation patterns in general.
When the river meets the sea: Transport and provenance in a long‐lived estuary

Abstract:Coastal plains and continental shelves in passive margin settings, as exemplified by the Perth area in southwest Australia, are characterized by abundant sediment reprocessing and homogenized provenance. However, source input from river catchments can remain locally well preserved in the detrital zircon record, here demonstrated for the modern Swan River estuary and a flooded continental margin offshore. Unravelling source‐to‐sink relationships of sediment in coastal regions can be particularly challenging due to a variety of transport directions and mixing within varying local environments in response to sea level fluctuations. Post‐glacial sea level rise in the Holocene has resulted in the flooding of former continental margins, locally leading to the separation of islands such as Rottnest in southwest Australia. Rottnest lies approximately 20 km offshore from the mouth of the Swan River, one of the largest permanent river systems across thousands of kilometres of west Australian coastline. In this contribution, we investigate the size, U–Pb age distribution and α‐dose values of detrital zircon grains within 13 sand samples collected from three upstream tributaries that drain the Archean Yilgarn Craton, the Swan River estuary, offshore waters surrounding Rottnest Island and modern beaches. We explore sediment derivation, storage and mixing on this passive margin. Carbonate–silicate sands of the region contain detrital zircon with Archean, Mesoproterozoic and Cambro‐Neoproterozoic age modes, reflecting regional crystalline basement. Eo‐ to Paleoarchean zircon grains, including a previously enigmatic >3500 Ma component, are traced from offshore into the estuary, and specifically the Avon River tributary. Detrital mixing models imply an overall fluvial contribution to the estuary and offshore systems of up to 50–65%. By contrast, modern beach samples are dominated by Swan Coastal Plain recycled sediment of up to 96%. The α‐dose values of the prominent 3300–3150 Ma age component suggest more efficient fluvial discharge in the Paleo‐Swan River than in more recent times. Modern estuary samples have lower average and progressively lower downstream zircon α‐dose values, consistent with prolonged chemical and physical reworking and loss of metamict grains with transport distance in the river. We conclude that fluvial drainage networks distribute a locally persistent catchment signal whilst coastal plains in tectonically quiescent settings appear characterized by sediment reprocessing and mixed provenance.

Abstract:Green marine clays, known as glaucony and verdine facies, are unique iron-rich minerals typically found in shallow marine sedimentary environments covering large areas of continental shelves today. While on some occasions they have been used effectively as paleoenvironmental indicators associated with transgressive and highstand system tracts, their occurrence can vary in different sedimentary environments. This paper aims to provide a review of the nomenclature and mineralogical composition of these facies, their habits and morphologies, as well as the physico-chemical characteristics of their genesis. This includes water depth, temperature, and geochemical factors that influence the local environments and characteristics of their formation. The article also presents examples from the NW Galician Continental Shelf and discusses the variety of mechanisms behind their genesis and evolution, as well as the challenges surrounding their chronology. Comparisons are drawn with the old facies (ironstone), which can occur in a wider range of marine environments and are sometimes found alongside glaucony and verdine facies in ancient deposits. This highlights the importance of accurately reconstructing the environment of each deposit. The literature reveals many exceptions in relation to the zonal and bathymetric distribution, sedimentation rates, age, etc. of these facies, emphasizing the need for further investigation into their genesis in current and ancient environments. Such research would provide valuable insights for paleogeographic, paleoenvironmental, and stratigraphic interpretations.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We investigate the relationship between the cross-sectional geomorphic expression of a submarine channel as observed on the seafloor and the stratigraphic product of long-lived erosion, bypass, and sediment deposition. Specifically, by reconstructing the time–space evolution of an individual channel fill (i.e., channel element) exposed in outcrop, we establish a genetic link between thick-bedded channel-element-axis sandstone to thinly interbedded channel-element-margin deposits. Although the bounding surface between axis sandstone and margin thin beds is sharply defined, it is composed of a series of geomorphic surface segments of various ages; as such, the composite stratigraphic surface (∼ 17 m relief) was formed from numerous incision events that repeatedly sculpted the conduit. By demonstrating the origin of the stratigraphic surface, we conclude that geomorphic surfaces with 2–7 m of erosional relief were largely responsible for the observed intra-channel-element architecture (and ultimately, the composite 17-m-thick element). The widely documented channel element axis-to-margin architecture is a product of submarine-channel thalweg dynamics, primarily recording interactions between the seafloor and the basal high-concentration layers of channelized turbidity currents.

Abstract:Aeolian science is faced with significant challenges that impact its ability to benefit from recent advances in information technology. The discipline deals with high-end systems in the form of ground and satellite based sensors, computer modeling and simulation, and wind tunnel experiments. Aeolian scientists also collect field data manually with observational methods that may differ significantly between studies with little agreement on even basic morphometric parameters and terminology. Data produced from these studies, while forming the core of research papers and reports, is rarely available to the community at large. Recent advances are also superimposed on an underlying semantic structure that dates to the 1800’s or earlier that is confusing, with ambiguously defined, and at times even contradictory, meanings.
