Abstract:Coring/logging data and physical property measurements from International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 349 are integrated with, and correlated to, reflection seismic data to map seismic sequence boundaries and facies of the central basin and neighboring regions of the South China Sea. First‐order sequence boundaries are interpreted, which are Oligocene/Miocene, middle Miocene/late Miocene, Miocene/Pliocene, and Pliocene/Pleistocene boundaries. A characteristic early Pleistocene strong reflector is also identified, which marks the top of extensive carbonate‐rich deposition in the southern East and Southwest Subbasins. The fossil spreading ridge and the boundary between the East and Southwest Subbasins acted as major sedimentary barriers, across which seismic facies changes sharply and cannot be easily correlated. The sharp seismic facies change along the Miocene‐Pliocene boundary indicates that a dramatic regional tectonostratigraphic event occurred at about 5 Ma, coeval with the onsets of uplift of Taiwan and accelerated subsidence and transgression in the northern margin. The depocenter or the area of the highest sedimentation rate switched from the northern East Subbasin during the Miocene to the Southwest Subbasin and the area close to the fossil ridge in the southern East Subbasin in the Pleistocene. The most active faulting and vertical uplifting now occur in the southern East Subbasin, caused most likely by the active and fastest subduction/obduction in the southern segment of the Manila Trench and the collision between the northeast Palawan and the Luzon arc. Timing of magmatic intrusions and seamounts constrained by seismic stratigraphy in the central basin varies and does not show temporal pulsing in their activities.
Mesozoic and Early Cenozoic Tectonic Convergence-To-Rifting Transition Prior to Opening of the South China Sea

Abstract:We have investigated Mesozoic geological problems around the South China Sea (SCS) based on gravimetric, magnetic, seismic, and lithofacies data. Three-dimensional analytical signal amplitudes (ASA) of magnetic anomalies clearly define the inland tectonic boundaries and the residual Mesozoic basins offshore. The ASA suggest that the degree of magmatism and/or the average magnetic susceptibility of igneous rocks increase southeastwards and that late-stage A-type igneous rocks present along the coast of southeast China possess the highest effective susceptibility. The geophysical data define Mesozoic sedimentary and tectonic structures and reveal four major unconformities [Pz/T-J, T-J/J, J/K, and Mesozoic/Cenozoic (Pz, Palaeozic; T, Triassic; J, Jurassic; K, Cretaceous)], corresponding to regional tectonic events revealed by nine palaeogeographic time slices based on prior geological surveys and our new fieldwork. Showing both sedimentary and volcanic facies and regional faults, our palaeogeographic maps confirm an early Mesozoic northwestward-migrating orogeny that gradually obliterated the Tethyan regime, and a middle-to-late Mesozoic southeastward migration and younging in synchronized extension, faulting, and magmatism. Three major phases of marine deposition developed but were subsequently terminated by tectonic compression, uplift, erosion, faulting, rifting, and/or magmatism. The tectonic transition from the Tethyan to Pacific regimes was completed by the end of the Middle Triassic (ca. 220 Ma), reflecting widespread Mesozoic orogeny. The transition from an active to a passive continental margin occurred at the end of the Early Cretaceous (ca. 100 Ma); this was accompanied by significant changes in sedimentary environments, due likely to an eastward retreat of the palaeo-Pacific subduction zone and/or to the collision of the West Philippine block with Eurasia. The overall Mesozoic evolution of southeast China comprised almost an entire cycle of orogenic build-up, peneplanation, and later extension, all under the influence of the subducting palaeo-Pacific plate. Continental margin extension and rifting continued into the early Cenozoic, eventually triggering the Oligocene opening of the SCS.

Abstract:Timing, distribution, and intensity of magmatism are critical to understanding deep lithospheric processes in the opening of the South China Sea (SCS). Based primarily on multichannel seismic reflection data, and aided with gravity and magnetic anomalies, we identify various igneous features, such as sills, stocks, volcanic edifices, and volcanoes, which are often characterized by high positive seismic amplitudes, and/or by chaotic or blank reflections beneath them because of their seismic shielding effect. We estimate the timing of igneous activities and analyze their areal distribution in the SCS region based on seismic stratigraphy. We confirm that most igneous emplacements in the SCS margins occurred after the cessation of seafloor spreading, and are sparse and volumetrically small during the rifting and seafloor spreading phases, supporting magma-poor margins prior to the breakup of the continental lithosphere. By contrast, post-spreading magmatic activities are widespread in the continental slope areas and in the central SCS basin, and are most likely triggered by extension in relation to cooling and subsidence of the oceanic and attenuated continental lithosphere, which could accumulate a total thermal contractional displacement up to 24km.

Abstract:Compared to the northern South China Sea continental margin, the deep structures and tectonic evolution of the Palawan and Sulu Sea and ambient regions are not well understood so far. However, this part of the southern continental margin and adjacent areas embed critical information on the opening of the South China Sea (SCS). In this paper, we carry out geophysical investigations using regional magnetic, gravity and reflection seismic data. Analytical signal amplitudes (ASA) of magnetic anomalies are calculated to depict the boundaries of different tectonic units. Curie-point depths are estimated from magnetic anomalies using a windowed wavenumber-domain algorithm. Application of the Parker–Oldenburg algorithm to Bouguer gravity anomalies yields a 3D Moho topography. The Palawan Continental Block (PCB) is defined by quiet magnetic anomalies, low ASA, moderate depths to the top and bottom of the magnetic layer, and its northern boundary is further constrained by reflection seismic data and Moho interpretation. The PCB is found to be a favorable area for hydrocarbon exploration. However, the continent–ocean transition zone between the PCB and the SCS is characterized by hyper-extended continental crust intruded with magmatic bodies. The NW Sulu Sea is interpreted as a relict oceanic slice and the geometry and position of extinct trench of the Proto South China Sea (PSCS) is further constrained. With additional age constraints from inverted Moho and Curie-point depths, we confirm that the spreading of the SE Sulu Sea started in the Early Oligocene/Late Eocene due to the subduction of the PSCS, and terminated in the Middle Miocene by the obduction of the NW Sulu Sea onto the PCB.
Thermal Subsidence and Sedimentary Processes in the South China Sea Basin

Abstract:We coupled analysis of regional reflection seismic data with core data from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 349 and found differences in both depositional features and calculated subsidence between the East and Southwest Subbasins. We calculated the original (decompacted) thicknesses of sediment for different time slices. The depositional features of the basin show that the sedimentation is controlled by both climate and tectonics. Decoupling of sedimentation rates and fluxes is often observed between the continental margin and deep basin. An abrupt increase in sedimentation rates since the Pliocene suggests that glacial–interglacial climate variability impacted erosion rates. The sedimentation rate peaked during the Pliocene in the Southwest Subbasin, but peaked during the Quaternary in the East Subbasin, showing strong influence of surrounding tectonic events, such as the buildup of Taiwan Orogen, on erosion rates. We examine thermal subsidence of the two subbasins by fitting the isostatically balanced basement depths from the seismic profiles with the half space cooling model. The estimated thermal diffusivity of the lithosphere in the Southwest Subbasin is much higher than in the East Subbasin. These contrasting observations suggest that lithospheric rock compositions may contribute to different tectonic subsidence curves between the East and the Southwest Subbasins.

Abstract:The South China Sea (SCS) is the largest marginal sea in the Western Pacific Ocean. Major advances in understanding SCS tectonic processes have been made in the last several decades, especially through the implement-ation of five international ocean drilling expeditions during 1999-2018 and the "South China Sea Deep" major re-search program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2011-2019). Critical data have been acquired and important scientific results have been obtained, which have changed our view of how the SCS marginal sea basin developed and evolved. Major progresses have been made in multiple aspects: (1) the SCS is proposed as a new type of "plate-edge rifting" model, which differs from the classic Atlantic-type "intra-plate rifting" model; (2) Ocean drilling obtained the SCS basement basalt samples for the first time, which together with the first deep-towed magnetic survey, enabled the determination of SCS basin ages and revealing that the SCS seafloor spreading propagated stepwise from east to west; (3) Magmatism appeared rapidly during thinning of lithosphere in the SCS northern margin, in sharp contrast to serpentinite exposure by relatively slow rifting of the Atlantic Ocean; (4) Mag-matic activity is still significant after the cessation of SCS seafloor spreading, being controlled by multiple tectonic and mantle processes; (5) Geochemical evidence and geodynamic simulations show that the SCS magmatism is af-fected by the surrounding subduction zones. At present, marine geoscience research of the SCS is being extended to studies of its interaction with surrounding ocean basins. Through conducting large-scale research programs, build-ing ocean drilling platform, and strengthening international collaboration, China’s contributions to marine geoscience research are expected to increase.
Structures of the Northeasternmost South China Sea Continental Margin and Ocean Basin: Geophysical Constraints and Tectonic Implications

Abstract:The northeastern part of the South China Sea is a special region in many aspects of its tectonics. Both recent drilling into the Mesozoic and new reflection seismic surveys in the area provide a huge amount of data, fostering new understanding of the continental margin basins and regional tectonic evolution. At least four half-grabens are developed within the Northern Depression of the Tainan Basin, and all are bounded on their southern edges by northwestward-dipping faults. One of the largest half-grabens is located immediately to the north of the Central Uplift and shows episodic uplift from the late Oligocene to late Miocene. Also during that period, the Central Uplift served in part as a material source to the Southern Depression of the Tainan Basin. The Southern Depression of the Tainan Basin is a trough structure with deep basement (up to 9 km below sealevel or 6 km beneath the sea bottom) and thick Cenozoic sedimentation (>6 km thick). Beneath the Southern Depression we identified a strong landward dipping reflector within the crustal layer that represents a significant crustal fault. This reflector coincides with a sharp boundary in crustal thicknesses and Moho depths. We show that the northeasternmost South China Sea basin, which may have undergone unique evolution since the late Mesozoic, is markedly different from the central South China Sea basin and the Huatung Basin, both geologically and geophysically. The Cenozoic evolution of the region was largely influenced by pre-existing weaknesses due to tectonic inheritance and transition. The South China Sea experienced multiple stages of Cenozoic extension.
Analysis of Characteristics and Main Controlling Factors of Shallow Geological Hazards in the Zhongsha Islands Region of the South China Sea

Abstract:This study utilized single-channel seismic, multi-channel seismic, and multibeam bathymetric data to examine the distribution and geomorphological background of geological hazards in the Zhongsha Islands region of the South China Sea. We elucidate the regional geological structure and its evolution while focusing on the types and characteristics of submarine hazards since the Quaternary Period. By integrating geomorphological, tectonic, and sedimentary factors, we analyzed the primary drivers of shallow geological hazards in the region. Our findings reveal that seabed topography, tectonic activity, and sedimentary processes critically influence hazard formation, particularly in geomorphic units prone to disasters, such as submarine slopes and canyons. Igneous rocks in the region display medium-acid to medium-basic compositions, with notable developmental stages during the Himalayan and Yanshan periods. From the Paleogene to the Middle Miocene, tectonic activity intensified, significantly thinning the lithosphere. By the Middle Miocene, the crust stabilized into its present configuration, marking the formation of key tectonic units in the region. Multiple phases of sedimentary evolution, influenced by the Cenozoic tectonic movements, further contribute to the region's susceptibility to geological hazards.

Tidal‐Driven Submarine Groundwater Discharge and Its Influences on the Carbonate System of a Coastal Coral Reef in the Northern South China Sea

Abstract:The driving mechanisms of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in Sanya Bay in the northern South China Sea were investigated using a combination of time-series observation and modeling, as well as the influences of SGD on the carbonate system of a coastal coral reef. SGD flux, characterized by high variability on flood-ebb and spring-neap tidal cycles, was found to be mainly driven by tidal pumping. SGD posed more significant impacts on coastal water at the ebb phase during the spring tide (higher SGD flux and extended offshore reach of SGD impact), with nearshore water to be more heavily affected. Under the influence of SGD, the diurnal ranges of the carbonate variables observed in the coral reef system were 124 - 313 mu mol kg(-1) for dissolved inorganic carbon, 29 - 101 mu mol kg(-1) for total alkalinity, 179 - 717 mu atm for partial pressure of CO2, and 0.20 - 0.45 for pH. The variations of the CO2 system were dominated by the enhanced SGD input during the spring tide, while biological metabolism of coral reef played a predominant role during the neap tide. The intensified SGD input resulted in higher diurnal variations of the carbonate variables, enhanced acidification, and oceanic CO2 emission during the spring tide. The SGD-associated inorganic carbon flux is an additional stressor influencing coastal acidification in the context of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Abstract:Various geological processes and features that might inflict hazards identified in the South China Sea by using new technologies and methods. These features include submarine landslides, pockmark fields, shallow free gas, gas hydrates, mud diapirs and earthquake tsunami, which are widely distributed in the continental slope and reefal islands of the South China Sea. Although the study and assessment of geohazards in the South China Sea came into operation only recently, advances in various aspects are evolving at full speed to comply with National Marine Strategy and ‘the Belt and Road’ Policy. The characteristics of geohazards in deep-water seafloor of the South China Sea are summarized based on new scientific advances. This progress is aimed to aid ongoing deep-water drilling activities and decrease geological risks in ocean development.

Abstract:In this paper, we have identified two types of submarine geohazards: direct geohazards and indirect geohazards on the northwestern continental slope and Xisha Uplift of the South China Sea. We conclude the formation of submarine geohazards is constrained by multiple factors, such as tectonic activity, sediment supply and relative changes in sea level. Submarine geohazards significantly threaten human economic activities and essential infrastructure. Based on multi‐beam data and high‐resolution 2D seismic data, two types of submarine geohazards are identified: direct and indirect geohazards on the northwestern continental slope and the Xisha Uplift of the South China Sea (SCS). Direct geohazards include submarine landslides and active faults, while indirect geohazards include buried channels, submarine canyons, pockmarks, volcanoes and magma diapirs. This study comprehensively analyzes geomorphological features, including their characteristics, genesis and distribution. Statistical analysis reveals that the gradient of the Xisha Uplift slope is steeper than the shelf break, making it a more unstable region. However, assessing disaster potential indicates that submarine geohazards at the shelf break pose a greater threat than those at the Xisha Uplift. Many factors, including tectonic activity, sediment supply and relative sea‐level changes, influence submarine geohazards' formation. These hazards do not occur in isolation but often interact with one another. The research results provide a scientific basis for predicting deep‐sea geohazards near the northern continental margin and Xisha Island in the SCS.

Abstract:The South China Sea region is potentially threatened by tsunami hazards originated from multiple sources: the Manila subduction zone in the east, the Littoral Fault Zone (LFZ) in the north, numerous submarine landslides on the continental slopes and the volcanic islands in the Luzon Strait. Infrequent but potentially devastating tsunami hazard poses a great threat to the populous coastal region, fishery, oil and gas exploitation in the deep sea, etc. Here we review the recent progress in tsunami hazard assessment in the South China Sea region, focusing on two primary sources: submarine earthquakes and landslides. We sort and review the literature by the two commonly used approaches: deterministic and probabilistic tsunami hazard assessment for both source types. By simulating tsunamis generated by typical earthquakes originated from the Manila Trench, the LFZ and landslides in the continental slopes, we investigate their tsunamigenic mechanism and key tsunami characteristics in the South China Sea region. We point out the research gaps and highlight the key issues to be addressed in the future.

Décollements, detachments and rafts in the extended crust of Dangerous Ground, South China Sea: the role of inherited contacts

Abstract:We investigate the crustal structure of the Dangerous Ground (South China Sea) through processing and interpretation of coincident wide-angle reflection and refraction seismic data. Continental crust of Dangerous Ground has been moderately thinned, down to 15 km, so that most of the structures accompanying the early opening of the South China Sea from Cretaceous to Miocene have been preserved. Subbasement reflectors as well as refraction velocities image an interpreted dismantled Mesozoic metamorphic unit in the southernmost section of our study area. A rollover structure indicates that the reflective base of the unit was used as a decollement where low-angle normal faults root and blocks rafted. The metamorphic unit is discontinued in a nearby basin located immediately to the north, where the refraction velocity model shows thinning of the crust from 20 to 15 km, with the presence of a 5-km-high mantle dome. In this deeper basin, mass transport deposits are found lying on a strong amplitude basement reflector interpreted as the footwall of an similar to 15 km offset crustal detachment surface that we link down to the mantle dome. We infer that the detachment reactivated an inherited low-angle contact most probably related to the Yanshanian belt. In map view, the reactivated structure forms a half-graben basin oriented NNE-SSW oblique to the generally accepted direction of extension. This orientation follows the general trend of a granitic belt that spanned the South China margin prior to extension, related to the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific.
The Latest Activity of the Slope Fault Zone (pearl River Mouth) in Northern South China Sea and Implications for Earthquake Hazard Assessments

Abstract:In the northern region of the South China Sea, located at the intersection of the continental shelf and slope, there have been recorded four earthquakes with magnitudes M≥6.0. This pattern of seismic activity suggests the presence of a previously unidentified active submarine fault. Notably, no active faults have been documented in this area prior to our investigation, with earlier studies predominantly focusing on the structural morphology and sedimentary basin evolution associated with the South China Sea's spreading phenomenon. Through the examination of seismic profiles and historical earthquake records, we have identified a newly discovered fault, termed the Slope Fault Zone (SFZ). The SFZ exhibits diverse structural components, including a listric normal fault in the western sector and a strike-slip fault zone in the eastern sector. Analysis of shallow seismic profiles and borehole data has revealed that the SFZ intersects with strata from the late Pleistocene epoch, confirming its classification as an active fault. The derived fault parameters indicate that the western segment of the SFZ has the potential to generate earthquakes of considerable magnitude, ranging from M 6.7 to 7.2. Furthermore, given the significant occurrence of submarine landslides along the southern boundary of the SFZ, there exists a risk that such seismic events could trigger slope failures and subsequent tsunamis. In summary, our research has unveiled the presence of an active fault capable of precipitating submarine earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis.

Abstract:Geological hazards can cause significant harm to the construction and maintenance of reef infrastructure projects in the Xisha Sea area. This study uses high-resolution multichannel earthquake data, single-channel seismic profiles, and multi-beam survey data to identify and analyze the geological hazards in the Xisha Sea area since the Miocene. Based on the geophysical data interpretation, the destructive geological disaster factors that are active, such as active faults, shallow gas, diapers, landslides, multistage scarps (steps), scouring troughs, and canyons, as well as the restrictive geological disaster factors without activity ability, such as buried paleochannels, pockmarks, reefs, and undersea volcanoes, are identified and analyzed. This paper discusses the causes and hazards of geological hazards and, for the first time, draws a comprehensive plane layout of the geological hazards. The above analysis demonstrates that the scarps are mainly located around the atolls or platforms, and the slope of the southeast seabed topography is significantly higher than that of the northwest. There are seven medium and large landslides, mainly located around Yongxing Plateau and Yongle Plateau, caused by gravity and faulting. Shallow gas is mainly developed in the southern part of the North Reef and is indicated by diaper structures, faults, and gas chimneys. A series of shallow faults are developed in the study area, mainly steep normal faults. The scouring troughs are primarily distributed near the Yongxing Platform, Zhongjian North Platform, and Huaguang Platform. Submarine canyons are primarily located in the northern and southern parts of the Shidao Platform. Affected by multiple factors such as hydrodynamic conditions, the stability of sedimentary layers, and sediment supply, the scour degree varies, with the general depth ranging from several meters to several hundred meters. Underwater infrastructure in the study area should not be constructed in areas with active and destructive geological hazards. The results of this study can serve as a guide for further exploration in the Xisha area and disaster prevention and mitigation during construction activity in the area.

Abstract:Fault activities in sea areas always produce devastative marine geohazards. For marine geohazard assessment, it is important to know the location, geometric structure, and activity regularity of active faults. In this study, highresolution multi -channel seismic and topographic data are used to investigate the exact location, geometric structure and latest activity of the Continental Slope Fault Zone (CSFZ) in the northern South China Sea. The results show that the Qiongdongnan (QDN) segment of the CSFZ is a 194 km long NEE -trending fault zone that developed near the transition of continental shelf and slope. In its geometric structure, the CSFZ (QDN segment) cuts through the Cenozoic basement and breaks upward to near the seafloor with high -angle dip. According to whether it ruptures to the seafloor, it can be divided into eastern and western segments. In the western segment, the fault scarps about 8 similar to 9 m high can clearly be seen on the seafloor. Whereas in the eastern segment, the fault shows a blind characteristic below the seafloor. The analysis of fault throws and expansion indices show that CSFZ (QDN segment) have remained active since the late Pleistocene. Due to the CSFZ is an active fault and geographically adjacent steep slope, which may cause large interpolate landslides, and then leading to destructive tsunamis. As a result, the CSFZ has great seismogenic potential and may produce marine geohazard chain. Thus, it is of great significance to the assessment of marine geohazard chain posed by the CSFZ for improving hazard mitigation.
On the Cenozoic tectonics and basin dynamics of the South China Sea

Abstract:The South China Sea is located at the conjunction of the Eurasia, India-Australia and Philippine plates, and is the largest marginal sea in the western Pacific area. The mechanism and tectonic evolution of the South China Sea, which will shed great insights into the interaction between the Tethyan and Pacific tectonic realms and the assessment of the oil and gas potential, are still open to intense debate. Based on the existing srtructural and tectonic information of the South China Sea and its adjacent areas, we tentatively dicussed the tectonic evolution of regions around the South China Sea during the Early and Late Tertiary through the Quaternary. The origin and evolution of the South China Sea were largely restrained by the India-Asian collision and the rotation of continental blocks along the Red River fault during the Cenozoic. South China Sea developed under the rift-strike tectonic background with the levorotaroty of Red River fault transfer to dextrorotation accompanying the convergency of India-Asian plate. Cenozoic subduction of the Pacific plate beneath to the Erasian continent result the disintegration of accumulated East Asian terranes during the Mesozoic. Continous continental subduction of South China Sea casused the underplate of basalt and uplifted the continental curst, and initite the broad magmatisms during the Mid-Miocene, and formed the miniature of modern South China Sea's deformation and tectonic framework. Generally, the South China Sea experienced initial marginal rifting in early and Middle of the Early Tertiary, strike-slipping pull-apart and oceanic extension during the later Early Tertiary to the early Late Tertiary, and Neotectonism from later Late Titary to Quaternary, respectively. Meanwhile, sedimentary sequences correspongding to the relevant tectonic setting. Cenozoic basins within the South China Sea have undergone different formation times, continental marginal deformation and basin characteristics because of the multiple plate tectonic dynamics around it. The northern South China Sea is a typical extensional continental margin result from the extension of oceanic crust, while its southeast is a compressional margin and its west is a transfer extensional continental margin.

Abstract:Rocks in extensional settings are generally sensitive to destruction and erosion, resulting in poor preservation potential and accumulation of their eroded components. The South China margin was dominated by a prolonged extensional setting from Late Mesozoic to Early Cenozoic, and this geological history is exactly archived in sediments within and surrounding the present South China Sea. However, the sedimentary evolution of the region, especially prior to the continental breakup and oceanic spreading, remains an issue of uncertainty and controversy, mostly due to limited borehole penetration and poor seismic reflection data for deeply buried sequences, as well as the lack of reliable regional stratigraphic framework. Here, we illustrate the Cretaceous–Palaeogene sedimentary evolution of the South China Sea region by synthesizing relevant data from previous literature and our own observations and displaying the evolution of lithofacies in sequential palinspastic reconstructions. The preferred palaeogeographic scenarios incorporate the latest interpretations of the conjugate relationship between continental margins as well as the birth and demise of the hypothetical Proto‐South China Sea. The patterns of lithofacies and depositional environments at regional scales, along with available provenance data, clearly reveal sedimentary responses to the significant Mesozoic–Cenozoic transition of plate geodynamics and magmatism along the Asian margin and provide implications for the potential mechanism of Cenozoic extension represented by distinct yet continuous processes of continental rifting and oceanic spreading.

Abstract:The northern South China Sea (SCS) continental margin has a very complex geological history within a multiplate convergent setting and has experienced multiphase tectonic movements, during which the largest significant petroliferous basin, the Pearl River Mouth Basin (PRMB), developed. Along the northern boundary of the PRMB, a prominent wide ENE-striking intraplate deformation zone, the Littoral Fault Zone (LFZ), stretches from west to east and is considered to be the major fault structure that formed during the spreading of the SCS and rifting of the northern continental margin. However, a lack of direct constraints on stratigraphic records and fault intersections due to difficulties with offshore geophysical exploration has resulted in uncertainty about the nature of the LFZ, especially the location, geometry and deep–shallow structural coupling, which are still unclear. In this paper, we use newly collected enhanced images provided by 2D long-offset multichannel seismic reflection profiles across the LFZ Pearl River Mouth (PRM) segment to analyse the deep structural and stratigraphic elements along the LFZ. Combining these data with previous findings, we attempt to advance the understanding of the NE–ENE-striking LFZ nature, evolutionary history and controlling effect on the tectonic and sedimentary processes that led to the formation of the PRMB. The results of this work shed new light on the geodynamic processes surrounding the PRMB. We suggest that the LFZ acted as a northern boundary fault with a three-phase transition over time. The first phase of fault activity initiated as a low-angle basement decollement (phase 1), followed by high-angle SE-dipping normal faults, which were mostly inherited from basement faults and reactivated during the Zhuqiong movement (phase 2). Above these two structures, the faults are characterized by strike-slip faulting, which occurred in the Oligocene (phase 3). The overall geometry of the LFZ shows right-step dextral features in the PRM segment that are obviously segmented by NW–WNW-trending faults. Our results highlight the significant role of this ENE-striking fault system in the basin sub-basin (sag) formation on the northern continental margin of the SCS.
