Abstract:Motivated by the unique geometries and novel properties of penta-graphene (PG) and its derivatives, we propose a new stable 3D carbon allotrope, penta-C72, which is composed of PG nanotubes by connecting adjacent tubes in a tip-to-tip manner. Using first-principles calculations, we confirm its dynamical, thermal, and mechanical stabilities and find that penta-C72 is semiconducting with an indirect bandgap of 2.12 eV. Its lattice thermal conductivities at 300 K are found to be anisotropic with values of 97.32 and 179.35 W/mK along the and directions, respectively, which are much lower than that of diamond (2664.93 W/mK) and carbon nanotube-based bct-C4 (1411.02 W/mK). A detailed analysis of both harmonic and anharmonic properties suggests that the soften acoustic phonon modes, the low Young's modulus, and strong anharmonicity are the key factors for the low lattice thermal conductivity. The study expands the family of carbon materials by assembling PG nanotubes.

Abstract:Stimulated by the high thermal conductivity of diamond together with the light mass and rich resources of carbon, a great deal of effort has been devoted to the study of the thermal conductivity of carbon-based materials. In this work, we systematically study the thermal transport properties of a three dimensional (3D) C-20 fullerene-assembled carbon allotrope, HSP3-C-34, in which all carbon atoms are in sp(3) hybridization. The stability of HSP3-C-34 is confirmed and its thermal conductivity is obtained by using first principles calculations combined with solving the linearized phonon Boltzmann transport equation. At room temperature, the thermal conductivity of HSP3-C-34 is 731 W m(-1) K-1, which is larger than those of many 3D carbon allotropes, such as BCO-C-16 (452 W m(-1) K-1), 3D graphene (150 W m(-1) K-1) and T-carbon (33 W m(-1) K-1). A detailed analysis of its phonons reveals that three acoustic branches are the main heat carriers at room temperature, and the optical branches gradually become important with increasing temperature. A further study on the harmonic and anharmonic properties of HSP3-C-34 uncovers that the main reasons for the high thermal conductivity are the weak anharmonicity and large group velocity resulting from the strong sp(3) bonding. This study provides new insights on searching for carbon allotropes with high thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Carbon enjoys a vast number of allotropic forms, each possessing unique properties determined by the lattice structures and bonding characters. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose a new three-dimensional carbon allotrope--hC28. We show that hC28 possesses exceptional energetic, dynamical, thermal, and mechanical stability. It is energetically more stable than most other synthesized or proposed carbon allotropes. The material has a relatively small bulk modulus, but is thermally stable at temperatures as high as 2000 K. The structural, mechanical, x-ray diffraction, and electronic properties are systematically investigated. Particularly, we show that its low-energy band structure hosts multiple unconventional emergent fermions, including the quadratic-contact-point fermions, the birefringent Dirac fermions, and the triple-point fermions. We construct effective models to characterize each kind of fermions. Our work not only discovers a new carbon allotropic form, it also reveals remarkable mechanical and electronic properties for this new material, which may pave the way towards both fundamental studies as well as practical applications.

Abstract:Exploring two-dimensional (2D) tetragonal carbon nitride materials is significant for unlocking new physical properties beyond those offered by traditional hexagonal lattices. In this work, we propose three theoretically stable 2D carbon nitride monolayers with tetragonal lattices, namely T-C3N, P-C3N, and PH-C5N4. Electronic structure calculations indicate that all three monolayers exhibit semiconducting characteristics, with T-C3N showing interesting flat band features. Additionally, these three carbon nitrides exhibit anisotropic and high carrier mobilities and excellent light absorption capabilities in the visible-light and near-infrared regions. Meanwhile, the calculated thermal conductivity (κp) of PH-C5N4 is 63.9 Wm−1K−1 at room temperature, significantly outperforming T-C3N (12.2 Wm−1K−1) and P-C3N (18.9 Wm−1K−1). Phonon scattering rates and Grüneisen parameters confirm the origin for the relatively high κp in PH-C5N4. Our study proposes three tetragonal carbon nitride structures with novel physical properties, which lays a theoretical foundation for the multifunctional applications of 2D carbon nitride materials.

Orthorhombic C36: a Sp2–sp3 Carbon with Pressure-Induced Metallization and Superconductivity

Abstract:Because of their particular characteristics, searching for potential sp2–sp3 hybridized carbon allotropes has become the foundation of new functional materials in the future. Here, we design a novel carbon phase constructed by sp2–sp3 hybridized bonding networks with a 36-atom body-centered orthorhombic unit cell, termed oC36. oC36 shows thermodynamic stability comparable to most of the theoretically predicted sp3 carbons. The elastic and dynamical stability of oC36 is confirmed by the calculation results of elastic constants and phonon spectra. Analysis of electronic properties reveals that oC36 changes from semiconductivity to one-dimensional conductivity with external pressure exceeding approximately 4 GPa. The conductivity arises from the overlap of the valance and conduction bands owing to sp2 hybridized nonbonding carbon interactions as the lattice constant decreases. Electron–phonon coupling calculations indicate the superconductivity of oC36 under 25 GPa, and its λ and TC values are 0.50 and 10.7 K, respectively. Strikingly, the estimated hardness, tensile strength, and shear strength of oC36 reach remarkably high values of 69.5, 79.1, and 78.9 GPa, respectively, indicating its superhardness and ultra-incompressibility. Our research expands the scope of sp2–sp3 carbon allotropes and provides new ideas for the later theoretical design of carbon allotropes with switchable properties.
Newly Designed 3D Carbon Allotrope with High Hardness and Strong UV–Vis Light Absorption

Abstract:Designing cage-based three-dimensional (3D) carbon allotropes is of significant interest due to their unique chemical and physical properties, along with fascinating applications in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, and nanomechanics. Among the many studied carbon polymorphs, however, it is urgent to find 3D-ordered porous architectures with high hardness, mechanical strength, and thermal stability as an alternative to the expensive diamond. Therefore, motivated by the synthesis of the V-carbon, we design a new superhard 3D monoclinic carbon structure (dubbed 3D m-C-16) in which all carbon atoms are coordinated through sp(3)-hybridized bonding in 5-, 6-, and 7-membered rings. Its optimized structure exhibits excellent dynamic, mechanical, and thermal stability. Unlike the small direct band gap with a semiconducting nature in Z-ACA carbon, the porous 3D m-C-16 shows a wide indirect band gap with an insulating nature and high cohesive energy. Also, the computed mechanical properties of this system are comparable to those found in V-carbon and diamond. Equally important, they carry anisotropic elasticity, high refractive index, excellent UV-Vis light absorption, and strong phonon inelastic scattering. Our study expands the cage-based 5-6-7 carbon rings family with new features.

Abstract:Although cyclobutene consisting of 4-membered rings of C atoms is highly unstable, one-and twodimensional (1D, 2D) carbon allotropes, called tetrahexcarbon (th-C) consisting of 4-and 6 membered rings, have been reported recently, which shows novel properties with prominent applications in nano-electronics, optoelectronics, and nano-mechanics. Going beyond the studies of 1D and 2D tetrahexcarbon, in this study we propose a 3D-tetrahexcarbon structure (3D th-C12), which shows dynamical, mechanical, and thermal stability. Different from the mixed sp(2)-sp(3) features in 1D and 2D tetrahexcarbon structures, all the C atoms are 4-coordinated in the 3D tetrahexcarbon. Moreover, different from the metallic and highly ductile 2D tetrahexcarbon sheet, the 3D tetrahexcarbon is brittle with high hardness, and it is semiconducting with an indirect bandgap of 3.92 eV at HSE06 level, exhibiting anisotropic elasticity, good optical absorption in visible and UV regions, strong phonon inelastic scattering. Abstract:A structurally stable crystalline carbon allotrope is predicted by means of the first-principles calculations. This allotrope can be derived by substituting each atom in diamond with a carbon tetrahedron, and possesses the same space group Fd^1 3m as diamond, which is thus coined as T- carbon. The calculations on geometrical, vibrational and electronic properties reveal that T-carbon, with a considerable structural stability and a much lower density 1.50 g/cm3, is a semiconductor with a direct band gap about 3.0 eV, and has a Vickers hardness 61.1 GPa lower than diamond but comparable with cubic boron nitride. Such a form of carbon, once obtained, would have wide applications in photocatalysis, adsoption, hydrogen storage and aerospace materials.
Two semiconducting three-dimensional all-sp2 carbon allotropes

Abstract:Using first-principles method, we investigate the energetic stability, dynamic stability and electronic properties of two three-dimensional (3D) all-sp2 carbon allotropes, sp2-diamond and cubic-graphite. The cubic-graphite was predicted by Michael O'Keeffe in 1992 (Phys. Rev. Lett., 68, 15, 1992.) possessing space group of Pn-3m (224), whereas the sp2-diamond with the space group Fd-3m (227) same as that of diamond has not been reported before. Our results indicate that sp2-diamond is more stable than previously proposed K4-carbon and T-carbon, and cubic-graphite is even more stable than superhard M-carbon, W-carbon and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Z-carbon.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> calculations on vibrational properties show that both structures are dynamically stable. Interestingly, both sp2-diamond and cubic-graphite behave as semiconductors which are contrary to previously proposed all-sp2 carbon allotropes. The sp2-diamond is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 1.66 eV, and cubic-graphite is an indirect semiconductor with band gap of 2.89 eV. The very lower densities and entirely sp2 configures of sp2-diamond and cubic-graphite can be potentially applied in hydrogen-storage, photocatalysts and molecular sieves.

Abstract:A new two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope, Hexa-C20, composed of C20 fullerene is proposed. State-of-the-art first principles calculations combined with solving the linearized phonon Boltzmann transport equation confirm that the new carbon structure is not only dynamically and thermally stable, but also can withstand temperatures as high as 1500 K. Hexa-C20 possesses a quasi-direct band gap of 3.28 eV, close to that of bulk ZnO and GaN. The intrinsic lattice thermal conductivity κlat of Hexa-C20 is 1132 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature, which is much larger than those of most carbon materials such as graphyne (82.3 W m-1 K-1) and penta-graphene (533 W m-1 K-1). Further analysis of its phonons uncovers that the main contribution to κlat is from the three-phonon scattering, while the three acoustic branches are the main heat carriers, and strongly coupled with optical phonon branches via an absorption process. The ultrahigh lattice thermal conductivity and an intrinsic wide band gap make the Hexa-C20 sheet attractive for potential thermal management applications.
Exotic Cubic Carbon Allotropes

Abstract:Elemental carbon exists in various aesthetically pleasing architectures. These forms include a group of synthesized allotropes with cubic modifications that have taken controversial or even unidentified crystal structures, which makes determining their physical properties difficult. In this study, four novel cubic carbon polymorphs (fcc-C-10, fcc-C-12, bcc-C-20, and fcc-C-32) that exhibit lattice parameters within the lame range as those of undetermined cubic carbon allotropes are proposed by employing a newly developed ab initio particle-swarm optimization methodology for crystal structure prediction. The four structures are all three-dimensional polymers consisting of unique, small C-10, C-12, C-20, and C-32 cages with quite low density. Investigation of their electronic and mechanical properties illustrate that the cage like cubic carbons are all semiconductors with excellent mechanical performance, specifically superhardness and high ductility. Moreover, we readily explain a long-standing controversial experimentally synthesized cubic carbon (viz., the so-called "superdense" carbon) using the previously proposed bcc C-6 based on the coincident lattice constant and electron diffraction data between the theoretical and experimental results.

Abstract:A new sp–sp 2-hybridized tetragonal carbon allotrope, namely Tetra-carbon, is predicted through the evolutionary particle swarm structural search. Tetra-carbon has a 3D framework composed of sp 2 carbon helixes connected by linear sp carbon chains, similar to the interconnected network of propadienyl groups, which forms the well-proportioned microporous structure. Tetra-carbon is thermodynamically more stable than known graphdiyne and carbyne carbon and also shows mechanical and dynamic stabilities at ambient pressure. Tetra-carbon is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 3.27 eV and has anisotropic tensile strengths with an unexpected large tensile strain of 0.64 along the [001] direction. Base on the analysis of Poisson’s ratios as well as the tensile strains, it is significantly revealed that Tetra-carbon is a mechanically ductile microporous carbon allotrope in contrast with the known brittle carbons such as diamond, potentially applied in the fields where the ductile metals are available.

Abstract:The sp 2–sp 3-hybridized carbon allotropes with the advantage of two hybrid structures possess rich and fascinating electronic and mechanical properties and they have received long-standing attention. We design a class of versatile sp 2–sp 3 carbons composed of graphite and diamond structural units with variable sizes. This class of sp 2–sp 3 carbons is energetically more favorable than graphite under high pressure, and their mechanical and dynamical stabilities are further confirmed at ambient pressure. The calculations of band structure and mechanical properties indicate that this class of sp 2–sp 3 carbons not only exhibits peculiar electronic characteristics adjusted from semiconducting to metallic nature but also presents excellent mechanical characteristics, such as superhigh hardness and high ductility. These sp 2–sp 3 carbons have desirable properties across a broad range of potential applications.
Four Carbon Allotropes Form COT Structures

Abstract:On the basis of first-principles calculations, four carbon allotropes that form COT structures, c-C72, t-C80, t-C88, and c-C96 carbons, are identified in this work. The microstructures of these four carbon allotropes are highly similar, and all have a porous structure and a density lower than those of most of the reported carbon allotropes. The dynamic and mechanical stability of c-C72, t-C80, t-C88, and c-C96 carbons have been certified by elastic parameters and phonon spectra. The total energy of c-C72 carbon is only 0.163 eV/atom greater than that of diamond, and it is more energetically favorable in comparison to the previously predicted carbon structures (such as oP144, C96, C5, Pmmm C18, etc.) at zero pressure. The electronic band calculations suggest that c-C72 carbon exhibits semiconductor character with an indirect band gap of 2.27 eV, while t-C80, t-C88, and c-C96 carbons have metallic nature. Due to their lower energy and lighter weight, c-C72, t-C80, t-C88, and c-C96 carbons may possess the possibility of being applied in hydrogen storage and electronics.

A New Two-Dimensional Semiconducting Carbon Allotrope with Direct Band Gap: a First-Principles Prediction

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials with an appropriate band gap play important roles in the various electronics fields. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we predict a new 2D carbon allotrope containing 32 atoms, consists of pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal and decagonal rings. This new allotrope is named as Po-C32, which possesses P4/MMM symmetry with a tetragonal lattice and has a vertical distance of 2.22 Å between the uppermost and undermost atoms. The cohesive energy, phonon band structure,ab initiomolecular dynamics simulations and elastic constants fitting confirm Po-C32 has high stabilities. The fitted in-plane Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio alongaandbdirections areYa=Yb= 244 N m-1andva=vb= 0.14, respectively, exhibiting the same mechanical properties alongaandbdirections. Interestingly, Po-C32 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 2.05 eV, comparable to that of phosphorene, exhibiting great potential in nanoelectronics. Moreover, two stable derivative allotropes are also predicted based on Po-C32. Po-C24-3D is an indirect narrow band gap (1.02 eV) semiconductor, while Po-C32-3D possesses a wider indirect band gap of 3.90 eV, which can be also applied in optoelectronic device.
Stability And Physical Properties Of A Tri-Ring Based Porous G-C4n3 Sheet

Abstract:Due to their porosity and biocompatibility, C-N based graphitic sheets are currently attracting much attention. Here we present our findings on a new structure of a g-C4N3 sheet composed of the tri-ring heptazine-like units, which is energetically more stable, more elastic and isotropic than the previously proposed structure consisting of the single-ring triazines. Dynamics and thermal stability of the new structure are confirmed using phonon spectrum calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. Based on hybrid density functional theory, we demonstrate that the tri-ring unit based g-C4N3 is a semiconductor with a small band gap, sharp optical absorption peaks and high absorption intensity. Although the new structure is nonmagnetic, ferromagnetism can be introduced and the optical absorption can be tuned by applying a small strain.
Prediction of highly stable 2D carbon allotropes based on azulenoid kekulene

Abstract:Despite enormous interest in two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotropes, discovering stable 2D carbon structures with practically useful electronic properties presents a significant challenge. Computational modeling in this work shows that fusing azulene-derived macrocycles – azulenoid kekulenes (AK) – into graphene leads to the most stable 2D carbon allotropes reported to date, excluding graphene. Density functional theory predicts that placing the AK units in appropriate relative positions in the graphene lattice opens the 0.54 eV electronic bandgap and leads to the appearance of the remarkable 0.80 eV secondary gap between conduction bands – a feature that is rare in 2D carbon allotropes but is known to enhance light absorption and emission in 3D semiconductors. Among porous AK structures, one material stands out as a stable narrow-multigap (0.36 and 0.56 eV) semiconductor with light charge carriers ( m e = 0.17 m 0 , m h = 0.19 m 0 ), whereas its boron nitride analog is a wide-multigap (1.51 and 0.82 eV) semiconductor with light carriers ( m e = 0.39 m 0 , m h = 0.32 m 0 ). The multigap engineering strategy proposed here can be applied to other carbon nanostructures creating novel 2D materials for electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Two novel three-dimensional tetragonal symmetry carbon allotropes with space group P4/mmm are proposed based on density-functional theory in this work. The two carbon allotropes (denoted as tP24-II carbon and tP32 carbon) possess dynamic stability and mechanical stability, and tP24-II carbon and tP32 carbon are theoretically more favorable in energy compared to most other carbon allotropes. The Young's modulus E, shear modulus G and bulk modulus B of tP24-II carbon are greater than that of other P4/mmm phases (tP8, tP12, tP16, tP24 carbon, tP32 carbon), the E and G of tP32 carbon is the smallest among the P4/mmm phases in this work, while the B of tP32 carbon is greater than that of tP12 and tP24 carbon. For elastic anisotropy, the tP32 carbon has great elastic anisotropy in shear modulus and Young's modulus. Both tP24-II carbon and tP32 carbon are indirect band gap semiconductor materials, while the tP32 carbon is a wide band gap semiconductor material. Both tP24-II carbon and tP32 carbon may be potential materials for electronic devices.
