Abstract:A new sp–sp 2-hybridized tetragonal carbon allotrope, namely Tetra-carbon, is predicted through the evolutionary particle swarm structural search. Tetra-carbon has a 3D framework composed of sp 2 carbon helixes connected by linear sp carbon chains, similar to the interconnected network of propadienyl groups, which forms the well-proportioned microporous structure. Tetra-carbon is thermodynamically more stable than known graphdiyne and carbyne carbon and also shows mechanical and dynamic stabilities at ambient pressure. Tetra-carbon is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 3.27 eV and has anisotropic tensile strengths with an unexpected large tensile strain of 0.64 along the [001] direction. Base on the analysis of Poisson’s ratios as well as the tensile strains, it is significantly revealed that Tetra-carbon is a mechanically ductile microporous carbon allotrope in contrast with the known brittle carbons such as diamond, potentially applied in the fields where the ductile metals are available.
Two semiconducting three-dimensional all-sp2 carbon allotropes

Abstract:Using first-principles method, we investigate the energetic stability, dynamic stability and electronic properties of two three-dimensional (3D) all-sp2 carbon allotropes, sp2-diamond and cubic-graphite. The cubic-graphite was predicted by Michael O'Keeffe in 1992 (Phys. Rev. Lett., 68, 15, 1992.) possessing space group of Pn-3m (224), whereas the sp2-diamond with the space group Fd-3m (227) same as that of diamond has not been reported before. Our results indicate that sp2-diamond is more stable than previously proposed K4-carbon and T-carbon, and cubic-graphite is even more stable than superhard M-carbon, W-carbon and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Z-carbon.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> calculations on vibrational properties show that both structures are dynamically stable. Interestingly, both sp2-diamond and cubic-graphite behave as semiconductors which are contrary to previously proposed all-sp2 carbon allotropes. The sp2-diamond is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 1.66 eV, and cubic-graphite is an indirect semiconductor with band gap of 2.89 eV. The very lower densities and entirely sp2 configures of sp2-diamond and cubic-graphite can be potentially applied in hydrogen-storage, photocatalysts and molecular sieves.

Abstract:The sp 2–sp 3-hybridized carbon allotropes with the advantage of two hybrid structures possess rich and fascinating electronic and mechanical properties and they have received long-standing attention. We design a class of versatile sp 2–sp 3 carbons composed of graphite and diamond structural units with variable sizes. This class of sp 2–sp 3 carbons is energetically more favorable than graphite under high pressure, and their mechanical and dynamical stabilities are further confirmed at ambient pressure. The calculations of band structure and mechanical properties indicate that this class of sp 2–sp 3 carbons not only exhibits peculiar electronic characteristics adjusted from semiconducting to metallic nature but also presents excellent mechanical characteristics, such as superhigh hardness and high ductility. These sp 2–sp 3 carbons have desirable properties across a broad range of potential applications.
Thermal Transport in Planar Sp2-Hybridized Carbon Allotropes: A Comparative Study of Biphenylene Network, Pentaheptite and Graphene

Abstract:The biphenylene network with periodically arranged four-, six-, and eightmembered rings has been successfully synthesized in very recent experiments. This novel two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope has potentials in applications of lithium storage and carbon-based circuitry. Understanding the thermal transport properties of biphenylene network is of critical importance for the performance and reliability of its practical applications. To this end, the thermal transport in biphenylene network is comprehensively investigated in this paper with the aid of molecular dynamics simulations together with first-principles calculations. For the sake of comparison, the thermal conductivities of other 2D sp2-hybridized carbon allotropes including graphene and pentaheptite are also investigated using the same method. It is found that the thermal conductivities of biphenylene network and pentaheptite are, respectively, only about one-thirteenth and one-eighth of graphene. Through the analysis of phonon property, mechanical property and electron density distribution, it is demonstrated that the great reduction in the thermal conductivity of biphenylene network and pentaheptite arises from the decline in their structural symmetry, which leads to the decrease of phonon group velocity and the reduction of phonon mean free path.
A New Two-Dimensional Semiconducting Carbon Allotrope with Direct Band Gap: a First-Principles Prediction

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials with an appropriate band gap play important roles in the various electronics fields. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we predict a new 2D carbon allotrope containing 32 atoms, consists of pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal and decagonal rings. This new allotrope is named as Po-C32, which possesses P4/MMM symmetry with a tetragonal lattice and has a vertical distance of 2.22 Å between the uppermost and undermost atoms. The cohesive energy, phonon band structure,ab initiomolecular dynamics simulations and elastic constants fitting confirm Po-C32 has high stabilities. The fitted in-plane Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio alongaandbdirections areYa=Yb= 244 N m-1andva=vb= 0.14, respectively, exhibiting the same mechanical properties alongaandbdirections. Interestingly, Po-C32 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 2.05 eV, comparable to that of phosphorene, exhibiting great potential in nanoelectronics. Moreover, two stable derivative allotropes are also predicted based on Po-C32. Po-C24-3D is an indirect narrow band gap (1.02 eV) semiconductor, while Po-C32-3D possesses a wider indirect band gap of 3.90 eV, which can be also applied in optoelectronic device.

Abstract:The vibrational properties, electronic structures and optical properties of novel carbon allotropes, such as monolayer penta-graphene (PG), double-layer PG and T12-carbon, were studied by first-principles calculations. Results of phonon calculations demonstrate that these exotic carbon allotropes are dynamically stable. The bulk T12 phase is an indirect-gap semiconductor having a quasiparticle (QP) bandgap of ∼5.19 eV. When the bulk material transforms to a two-dimensional (2D) phase, the monolayer and double-layer PG become quasi-direct gap semiconductors with smaller QP bandgaps of ∼4.48 eV and ∼3.67 eV, respectively. Furthermore, the partial charge density analysis indicates that the 2D phases retain part of the electronic characteristics of the T12 phase. The linear photon energy-dependent dielectric functions and related optical properties including refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption spectrum, reflectivity, and energy-loss spectrum were also computed and discussed. Additionally, the chemical stability of monolayer PG and the electronic and optical properties of double-side hydrogenated monolayer PG were also investigated. The results obtained from our calculations are beneficial to practical applications of these exotic carbon allotropes in optoelectronics and electronics.

D-carbon: A New sp3 Carbon Allotrope

Abstract:We have investigated the structural, mechanical and electronic properties of D-carbon by ab initio calculations, a new phase of crystalline sp3 carbon (pace group D2h5, Pmma-orthorhombic). Total-energy calculations demonstrate that D-carbon is energetically more favorable than previously proposed T6 structure. State-of-the-art theoretical calculations show that this new phase is dynamic, mechanical, and thermal stable at zero pressure, and more stable than graphite beyond 63.7 GPa. Importantly, the calculations reveal that D-carbon possesses high Vickers hardness (86.58 GPa) and bulk modulus (369 GPa), which are comparable to diamond. D-carbon is a semiconductor with a band gap of 4.33 eV, lower than diamond's gap (5.47 eV). The simulated X-ray diffraction pattern is in satisfactory agreement with the previously experimental data in chimney or detonation soot, suggesting its possible presence in the specimen. Equally important, the possible transition path from diamond to D-carbon has been investigated, indicating a possible approach to synthesize this new phase.

Abstract:A 2D metastable carbon allotrope, penta-graphene, composed entirely of carbon pentagons and resembling the Cairo pentagonal tiling, is proposed.State-of-the-art theoretical calculations confirm that the new carbon polymorph is not only dynamically and mechanically stable, but also can withstand temperatures as high as 1000 K. Due to its unique atomic configuration, penta-graphene has an unusual negative Poisson's ratio and ultrahigh ideal strength that can even outperform graphene.Furthermore, unlike graphene that needs to be functionalized for opening a band gap, penta-graphene possesses an intrinsic quasi-direct band gap as large as 3.25 eV, close to that of ZnO and GaN.Equally important, penta-graphene can be exfoliated from T12-carbon.When rolled up, it can form pentagon-based nanotubes which are semiconducting, regardless of their chirality.When stacked in different patterns, stable 3D twin structures of T12-carbon are generated with band gaps even larger than that of T12-carbon.The versatility of penta-graphene and its derivatives are expected to have broad applications in nanoelectronics and nanomechanics.
PCF-Graphene: A 2D Sp(2)-Hybridized Carbon Allotrope with a Direct Band Gap

Abstract:Motivated by the recent progress in synthesizing graphene by using aromatic benzene molecules as precursors, herein, we propose a new two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope by using nonaromatic molecule cyclooctatetraene as the precursor from a bottom-up approach. In this structure, all the carbon atoms are threefold coordinated, similar to the sp2-hybridized atoms in graphene; thus, we name the poly-cyclooctatetraene framework as PCF-graphene. First-principles calculations reveal that although PCF-graphene is metastable compared with graphene, it is thermally, mechanically, and dynamically stable. Different from graphene with a single-atomic thickness and zero band gap, PCF-graphene has a finite thickness of 2.45 A and is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 0.77 eV. It exhibits anisotropies in mechanical properties, carrier mobility, and optical adsorption because of its anisotropic lattice. Twin graphene: A novel two-dimensional semiconducting carbon allotrope

Abstract:Graphene has been expected to revolutionize the electronics, but suffered from its zero bandgap that will lead to an unacceptable leakage current in graphene-based transistors. Although a bandgap engineered graphene structure may have a bandgap, such bandgap is sensitively dependent on the geometry of the structure. Finding new two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting carbon allotropes is therefore extremely important for the new emerging all-carbon electronics. Based on first principles calculations, here we predict a new 2D semiconducting carbon allotrope, referred to as twin graphene. The allotrope has an intrinsic direct bandgap, very close to that of silicon and tunable by in-plane strain, indicating its great potential in nanoelectronics. The stability of twin graphene is carefully verified by both the first principles calculations and the molecular dynamics simulations. We determine also the mechanical properties of twin graphene, including the in-plane stiffness, Poisson’s ratio, shear stiffness and bending stiffness. Its excellent electronic and mechanical properties suggest that twin graphene may have a significant impact on many disciplines and fields related to nanotechnology.

Three Dimensional Graphdiyne Polymers with Tunable Band Gaps

Abstract:Four three-dimensional graphdiyne polymers, namely Tri-C18, Hex-C36, Tri-C54, and Orth-C72, are predicted with first principles calculations. These carbon allotropes are constituted with interlinked sp3-hybridized carbon pillars and sp2-hybridized graphene-like nanoribbons. Graphdiyne polymers are energetically more stable than C60 and graphdiyne, and show lower phase transition energy barriers from AA-graphdiyne than that of graphite–diamond transition. Except for the semimetallic Tri-C18, these polymers show narrow direct (or quasi-direct) band gap of 1.55–1.74eV. The porous structure and the high in-plane Young’s modulus of graphdiyne sheet are inherited by these polymers. Meanwhile, a greatly enhanced Young’s modulus as high as ca. 1TPa along the direction perpendicular to graphdiyne sheet and high hardness are developed in these systems.

Abstract:The carrier mobility of two-dimensional tetragonal carbon allotrope (T-CA) from porous graphene is investigated by first-principles calculations. T-CA can be constructed from divacancy and Stone–Thrower–Wales defects from graphene. T-CA is a direct semiconductor with a band gap of 0.4 eV at Γ point. T-CA possesses a high carrier mobility of the order of 104 cm2 V–1 s−1. As our study demonstrates, T-CA has potential applications for next-generation electronic materials.

Abstract:Two novel three-dimensional tetragonal symmetry carbon allotropes with space group P4/mmm are proposed based on density-functional theory in this work. The two carbon allotropes (denoted as tP24-II carbon and tP32 carbon) possess dynamic stability and mechanical stability, and tP24-II carbon and tP32 carbon are theoretically more favorable in energy compared to most other carbon allotropes. The Young's modulus E, shear modulus G and bulk modulus B of tP24-II carbon are greater than that of other P4/mmm phases (tP8, tP12, tP16, tP24 carbon, tP32 carbon), the E and G of tP32 carbon is the smallest among the P4/mmm phases in this work, while the B of tP32 carbon is greater than that of tP12 and tP24 carbon. For elastic anisotropy, the tP32 carbon has great elastic anisotropy in shear modulus and Young's modulus. Both tP24-II carbon and tP32 carbon are indirect band gap semiconductor materials, while the tP32 carbon is a wide band gap semiconductor material. Both tP24-II carbon and tP32 carbon may be potential materials for electronic devices.

Two dimensional Dirac carbon allotropes from graphene

Abstract:Using a structural search method in combination with first-principles calculations, we found lots of low energy 2D carbon allotropes and examined all possible Dirac points around their Fermi levels. Three amazing 2D Dirac carbon allotropes have been discovered, named as S-graphene, D-graphene and E-graphene. By analyzing the topology correlations among S-, T, net W graphene and graphene, we found that a general rule is valuable for constructing 2D carbon allotropes that are keen to possess Dirac cones in their electronic structures. Based on this rule, we have successfully designed many new 2D carbon allotropes possessing Dirac cones. Their energy order can be well described by an Ising-like model, and some allotropes are energetically more stable than those recently reported. The related electronic structures of these Dirac allotropes are anisotropy distinguished from those of graphene. Moreover, the fact that D- and E-graphene present Dirac cones suggests that sp hybridization or sp(3) hybridization could not suppress the emerging of Dirac features. Our results demonstrate that the Dirac cone and carrier linear dispersion is a very common feature in 2D carbon allotropes and can exist beyond the limitations of fundamental structure features of graphene.

Abstract:Motivated by the unique geometries and novel properties of penta-graphene (PG) and its derivatives, we propose a new stable 3D carbon allotrope, penta-C72, which is composed of PG nanotubes by connecting adjacent tubes in a tip-to-tip manner. Using first-principles calculations, we confirm its dynamical, thermal, and mechanical stabilities and find that penta-C72 is semiconducting with an indirect bandgap of 2.12 eV. Its lattice thermal conductivities at 300 K are found to be anisotropic with values of 97.32 and 179.35 W/mK along the and directions, respectively, which are much lower than that of diamond (2664.93 W/mK) and carbon nanotube-based bct-C4 (1411.02 W/mK). A detailed analysis of both harmonic and anharmonic properties suggests that the soften acoustic phonon modes, the low Young's modulus, and strong anharmonicity are the key factors for the low lattice thermal conductivity. The study expands the family of carbon materials by assembling PG nanotubes.
Penta-Pt2N4: an Ideal Two-Dimensional Material for Nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional (2D) materials have paved a new routine for designing high-performance nanoelectronic devices. To facilitate the device applications, there are three key requirements for a material: sizeable band gap, high carrier mobility and robust environmental stability. However, for the hottest 2D materials studied in recent years, graphene is gapless, transition metal dichalcogenides have low carrier mobility, and black phosphorene is environmentally sensitive. So far, these three characteristics can seldom be satisfied in one single material. Therefore, it becomes a great challenge for finding an ideal 2D material to overcome such a limitation. In this work, we theoretically predict a novel planar 2D material: Penta-Pt2N4, which are designed by the fantastic Cario pentagonal tiling as well as the rare nitrogen double bond. Most significantly, the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 exhibits excellent intrinsic properties, including large direct band gap up to 1.51 eV, high carrier mobility up to 105 cm2V-1s-1, giant Young's module up to 0.70 TPa, and robust dynamic, thermal and chemical stability. Moreover, Penta-Pt2N4 is a global minimal with PtN2 stoichiometry in 2D, so we also propose a CVD/MBE scheme to enable its experimental synthesis. We envision that the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 may find a wide application for future nanoelectronics.
T-Carbon: A Novel Carbon Allotrope

Abstract:A structurally stable crystalline carbon allotrope is predicted by means of the first-principles calculations. This allotrope can be derived by substituting each atom in diamond with a carbon tetrahedron, and possesses the same space group Fd^1 3m as diamond, which is thus coined as T- carbon. The calculations on geometrical, vibrational and electronic properties reveal that T-carbon, with a considerable structural stability and a much lower density 1.50 g/cm3, is a semiconductor with a direct band gap about 3.0 eV, and has a Vickers hardness 61.1 GPa lower than diamond but comparable with cubic boron nitride. Such a form of carbon, once obtained, would have wide applications in photocatalysis, adsoption, hydrogen storage and aerospace materials.
A novel two-dimensional all-carbon Dirac node-line semimetal

Abstract:Carbon allotropes have vast potential in various applications, including superconductivity, energy storage, catalysis, and photoelectric semiconductor devices. Recently, there has been significant research interest in exploring new carbon materials that exhibit unique electronic structures. Here, we propose a novel two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope called TCH-SSH-2D, which possesses a Dirac node-line (DNL) semimetallic state. The structure of TCH-SSH-2D is derived from the TCH-type Archimedean polyhedral carbon cluster units, combined with the SSH lattice model, possessing a space group of tetragonal P4/mmm. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the system is dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable. It exhibits an energetically favorable structure with no imaginary frequency in the phonon dispersion curves and elastic constants satisfying the Born-Huang stability criterion. Our findings not only contribute to a deeper understanding of the carbon allotrope family but also provide an opportunity to explore unique Dirac states in two-dimensional pure carbon systems.

Abstract:A novel carbon allotrope is predicted by first-principles calculations. This allotrope is obtained by replacing one of the two atoms in the primitive cell of diamond with a carbon tetrahedron, thus it contains five atoms in one primitive cell, termed T5-carbon. The stabilities of T5-carbon are checked in structural, thermal and vibrational calculations. T5-carbon is a wide band gap semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 4.30 eV, and has a lattice thermal conductivity of 409 W/mK. Mechanical analyses reveal that T5-carbon shows good mechanical performances. Furthermore, by modifying T5-carbon with replacing some carbon atoms with Si or Ti atoms, we can obtain SiC4 or TiC4 structures. Importantly, the TiC4 system has a moderate conduction and valance band edges, comparable larger absorption capacity of visible light and smaller effective masses of electron and hole carriers than TiO2, confirming its photocatalysis applications.

Abstract:Carbon enjoys a vast number of allotropic forms, each possessing unique properties determined by the lattice structures and bonding characters. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose a new three-dimensional carbon allotrope--hC28. We show that hC28 possesses exceptional energetic, dynamical, thermal, and mechanical stability. It is energetically more stable than most other synthesized or proposed carbon allotropes. The material has a relatively small bulk modulus, but is thermally stable at temperatures as high as 2000 K. The structural, mechanical, x-ray diffraction, and electronic properties are systematically investigated. Particularly, we show that its low-energy band structure hosts multiple unconventional emergent fermions, including the quadratic-contact-point fermions, the birefringent Dirac fermions, and the triple-point fermions. We construct effective models to characterize each kind of fermions. Our work not only discovers a new carbon allotropic form, it also reveals remarkable mechanical and electronic properties for this new material, which may pave the way towards both fundamental studies as well as practical applications.
