Abstract:Heterostructure engineering is crucial for enhancing gas sensing performance. However, achieving rapid response for room-temperature NO 2 sensing through rational heterostructure design remains a challenge. In this study, a Bi 2 Se 3 /SnSe 2 2D/2D heterostructure was synthesized by hydrothermal method for the rapid detection of NO 2 at room temperature. By combining Bi 2 Se 3 nanosheets with SnSe 2 nanosheets, the Bi 2 Se 3 /SnSe 2 sensor demonstrated and the lowest detection limit for NO 2 a short response time (15 s) to 10 ppm NO 2 at room temperature, reaches 25 ppb. Furthermore the sensor demonstrates significantly larger response to NO 2 than to other interfering gases, including 10 ppm NO 2 , H 2 S, NH 3 , CH 4 , CO, and SO 2 ,demonstrating its outstanding selectivity. And we discuss the mechanism of related performance enhancement.

Abstract:Heterostructure construction is an effective strategy for enhancing the properties of functional materials. However, the problems of lattice mismatch and weak built-in field in the heterointerface usually degrade the interfacial charge transfer efficiency, severely limiting the improvement of sensing properties for gas sensors. To break through this limitation, we attempted to build a lattice-matched SnS2/SnSe2 in-plane heterostructure as a NO2 gas sensor, for which the capability was revealed by DFT calculations. The SnS2/SnSe2 in-plane heterostructures with atomically sharp interfaces were synthesized by the topotactic anion-exchange method. The content and spatial arrangement of in situ grown SnSe2 can be tuned in the heterostructures by adjusting the Se precursor. Ultrahigh response (1165.2%), sensitivity (322.0% ppm(-1)) and rapid response/recovery (80/78 s) to NO2 (4 ppm) were realized at room temperature for the optimal SnS2/SnSe2 in-plane heterostructure. The response value was 24.7 and 9.5 times higher than that of the common SnS2/SnSe2 heterostructures prepared by mechanical mixing and solvothermal deposition, respectively. The response and recovery times were also improved by a factor of 3.5/8.9 and 1.6/4.9, respectively. The superior sensing properties are attributed to the atomic-level sharp in-plane SnS2/SnSe2 heterointerface with a lateral built-in field that not only improves NO2 adsorption but also boosts the interfacial charge transfer along the 2D plane. The ion-exchange growth of the 2D in-plane heterostructure is expected to expand to other 2D nanomaterial systems for applications in sensors, photoelectronics, and catalysts.
A Reusable and High Sensitivity Nitrogen Dioxide Sensor Based on Monolayer SnSe

Abstract:The sensing properties of monolayer tin selenium (SnSe) for CO, CO2, NH3, H2O, and NO2 gas molecules are theoretically investigated by the first-principle calculation based on density functional theory. The adsorption energy, equilibrium distance, and Mulliken charge transfer are calculated to evaluate the adsorption properties of the SnSe monolayer for these gas molecules. All the molecules show physisorption nature on the SnSe monolayer. The results demonstrate that SnSe is sensitive to NO2 gas molecules with moderate adsorption energy and superior charge transfer. Furthermore, only the adsorption of NO2 can modify the densities of states of SnSe near the Fermi level. The current-voltage (I-V) curves reveal that the conductivity of the SnSe monolayer is distinctly increased after NO2 adsorption. The recovery time of the SnSe sensor at T = 300 K is estimated to be quite short for NO2, which satisfies the demand of sustainable use. Therefore, our results can provide a theoretical basis for the potential applications of monolayer SnSe in NO2 detecting at room temperature.

Abstract:Layered tin diselenide (SnSe2) has aroused widespread scientific interest by virtue of its exceptional chemical, physical, and electrical characteristics. The distinctive features of SnSe2 enable it to be an ideal candidate for efficient detection of NO2 at room temperature. Herein, hierarchical SnSe2 assembled from thin nanosheets was designed and prepared through a facile solvothermal method. An ultralow detection limit (10 ppb) and considerable NO2 sensing performance were obtained at room temperature. A sensor based on hierarchical SnSe2 demonstrated a high response value of 1200% (triple that of SnSe2 nanosheets) and short response/recovery time of 50/55 s toward 10 ppm NO2. These remarkable sensing properties are uncommon in two-dimensional (2D) materials at room temperature. Additionally, the sensor exhibited superb selectivity, reliable reproducibility, and excellent long-term stability within 5 months. These enhanced sensing properties could be ascribed to the unique hierarchical structures, which possess large accessible space that enhances the adsorption and diffusion of gas molecules. This study offers a new strategy to improve the sensing performance of SnSe2 through rational morphology and structure design.

Abstract:Advanced semiconductor heterostructures based on 2D materials present fascinating chemical, electronic, and geometric effects on chemical sensing and hold a great promise for developing high-performance gas sensors. However, the conventional tandem heterostructures may suffer from severe defect scattering as well as inferior heterointerface, thus limiting their sensing performance as the result of hindered interfacial charge transfer. Herein, we present a hierarchical assembly of SnO2-rGO/SnS2 heterostructure with 2D reduced graphene oxide (rGO) acting as a transfer highway to bridge n-type SnO2 nanowires and n-type SnS2 nanoflakes, resulting in novel ternary n-g-n junctions for the improvement of charge transport efficiency and thus enabling ultra-sensitive NO2 gas detection. Compared to pure SnO2/SnS2 and SnS2 sensors, the sensing response of n-g-n junctioned SnO2-rGO/SnS2 sensor reaches 1064 toward 10 ppm NO2, exceeding the corresponding sensors by a factor of 18 and 35, respectively. The SnO2-rGO/SnS2 sensor also exhibits an extremely low detection limit down to 10 ppb, short response and recovery times (42 and 111 s, respectively), excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and humidity resistance. We believe such a ternary architectural design with the novel n-g-n heterojunction engineering would provide a new approach towards future ultrahigh-performance gas sensing.

Abstract:The effective detection of hazardous gases has become extremely necessary for the ecological environment and public health. Interfacial engineering plays an indispensable role in the development of innovative materials with exceptional properties, thus triggering a new revolution in the realization of high-performance gas sensing. Herein, the rational designed Ag2S/SnS2 heterostructures were synthesized via a facile in-situ cation-exchange method. The coshared S atoms derived from in-situ interfacial engineering enable intimate atomic-level contact and strong electron coupling between SnS2 and Ag2S, which efficiently assist interfacial charge redistribution and transport as confirmed theoretically and experimentally. Benefiting from the high-quality interface of the heterostructures, the resultant Ag2S/SnS2 sensor delivered an ultrahigh response (286%) together with short response/recovery time (17 s/38 s) to 1 ppm NO2. The sensor also demonstrated superior sensing selectivity and reliable repeatability at room-temperature. Such excellent sensing performance could be synergistically ascribed to the junction effect and interfacial engineering of Ag2S/SnS2 heterostructures, which not only modulates the electronic properties of SnS2 but also provides abundant adsorption sites for gas sensing. This study offers guidance for engineering heterostructures with high-quality interface, which might stimulate the exploitation of other novel materials and widen their potential applications.

Abstract:The detection of air pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is of great importance arising from its great harm to the ecological environment and human health. However, the detection range of most NO2 sensors is ppm-level, and it is still challenging to achieve lower concentration (ppb-level) NO2 detection. Herein, 2D tin diselenide nanoflakes decorated with 1D zinc oxide nanowires (SnSe2/ZnO) heterojunctions were first reported by facile hydrothermal and ultra-sonication methods. The response of the fabricated SnSe2/ZnO sensor enhances 3.41 times on average compared with that of pure SnSe2 sensor to 50-150 ppb NO2 with a high detection sensitivity (22.57 ppm-1) at room temperature. In addition, the SnSe2/ZnO sensor has complete recovery, negligible cross-sensitivity, and small relative standard deviation (6.98%) during the 1 month sensing test, which can meet the requirements for NO2 detection in environmental monitoring. The enhanced NO2 sensing performance can be attributed to the n-n heterojunction constructed between SnSe2 and ZnO. The as-prepared sensor based on SnSe2/ZnO hybrid significantly promotes the development of the low detection limit of the NO2 sensor at room temperature.

Abstract:Increasing the efficiency of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensing has been researched in-depth owing to the destructive and pernicious impacts of the gas on both the environment and human health. In this work, a novel n-n FeSe2/ hematite heterojunctions have been constructed through the controllable surface oxidation of FeSe2 nanoparticles and used for NO2 detection. Theoretical calculations suggest that the FeSe2/Fe2O3 interface can facilitate the electron and mass transfer through the n-n junction and oxygen spillover effect, energetically contributing to enhanced NO2 adsorption. In terms of NO2 sensing, the FeSe2/Fe2O3 nanocomposite exhibits a higher response (14.1-100 ppm) and faster sensing kinetics (10-30 s) than its FeSe2 and Fe2O3 counterparts. Such a heterostructure also demonstrates a ppb-level detection capacity, outstanding stability and selectivity to NO2 gas against other interfering gases at low temperatures (110 celcius). In situ Raman and Mott-Schottky measurements were further conducted to analyze the interface electronic properties and NO2 gas adsorption behaviors. The results from this investigation suggest that the NO2 gas could be reversibly chemi-adsorbed and desorbed on the surface of the FeSe2/Fe2O3 heterostructure for fast sensing response and recovery. This study presents fundamental insights into the rational design and implementation of highly efficient NO2 sensing materials through oxide/chalcogenide interface coupling.

Abstract:Novel ZnSe/NiO heterostructure nanocomposites were successfully prepared by one-step hydrothermal method. The ZnSe/NiO-based sensor exhibits a response of ~ 96.47% to 8 × 10−6 NO2 at 140 °C, which is significantly higher than those of intrinsic ZnSe-based (no response) and NiO-based (~ 19.65%) sensors. The theoretical detection limit (LOD) of the sensor is calculated to be 8.91 × 10−9, indicating that the sensor can be applied to detect the ultralow concentrations of NO2. The effect of NiO content on the gas-sensing performance of the nanocomposites was investigated in detail. The optimal NiO content in the nanocomposite is determined to be 15.16% to achieve the highest response. The as-fabricated sensor also presents an excellent selectivity to several possible interferents such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, benzene, ammonia and formaldehyde. The enhanced sensing performance can be attributed to the formation of p–p heterostructures between ZnSe and NiO, which induces the charge transfer across the interfaces and yields more active sites.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) 2 ) is one of the most common toxic gases, which not only impairs human health but also produces secondary pollutants induced by sunlight via associated photochemical reactions. Herein, we design a high-performance NO2 2 sensor based on the N-doped carbon dots/SnS2 2 (N-CDs/SnS2) 2 ) heterostructure using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT results approve that the decoration of N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) onto the SnS2 2 nanosheet enhances adsorption capacity and electron transportation compared with those of pure SnS2, 2 , significantly enhancing the sensing responses. In addition, these in-situ synthesized N-CDs onto SnS2 2 nanosheet leads to band alignment, thereby significantly improves conductivity and enhances transportation and storage properties of carriers via a synergistic interaction. Furthermore, employment of UV illumination significantly increases active adsorption sites and enhances response and recovery kinetics. As a result, the developed NO2 2 sensor achieves fast responses of a few seconds and a limit of detection down to sub-ppb-level with the help of UV illumination. It also shows good linearly, operated in both air and oxygen-free environments, at both room or low temperature (238 K) conditions. The developed multi-framework offers an efficient and precision detection of NO2 2 with ultrafast responses and ultralow concentrations in multiple environments.

Abstract:In this work, the adsorption and sensing behavior of Ag-doped MoSe2/ZnO heterojunctions for H2, CH4, CO2, NO, CO, and C2H4 have been studied based on density functional theory (DFT). In gas adsorption analysis, the adsorption energy, adsorption distance, transfer charge, total electron density, density of states (DOS), energy band structure, frontier molecular orbital, and work function (WF) of each gas has been calculated. Furthermore, the reusability and stability of the Ag-doped MoSe2/ZnO heterojunctions have also been studied. The results showed that Ag-doped MoSe2/ZnO heterojunctions have great potential to be a candidate of highly selective and responsive gas sensors for NO detection with excellent reusability and stability.

Abstract:Heterojunction engineering plays an indispensable role in improving gas-sensing performance. However, rational heterojunction engineering to achieve room-temperature NO2 sensing with both high response and rapid recovery is still a challenge. Herein, a 2D/2D heterojunction of g-C3N4/SnS2 is designed to improve the sensing performance of SnS2 and used for ultrasensitive and rapid-recoverable NO2 detection at room temperature. The pristine SnS2 fails to work at room temperature because of its high resistivity and weak adsorption to NO2. After combination with g-C3N4 nanosheets, the g-C3N4/SnS2-based sensor exhibits an extremely high response (503%) and short recovery time (166 s) towards 1 ppm NO2 at room temperature. The improved sensing performance is primarily attributed to the increased adsorption sites and enhanced charge transfer induced by the 2D/2D heterojunctions with large interface contact area. This achievement of g-C3N4/SnS2 2D/2D heterostructures demonstrates a promising pathway for the design of sensitive gas-sensing material based on a 2D/2D heterojunction strategy.
Few-Layer PdSe 2 Nanofilm/Si Heterojunction for Sensing NO 2 at Room Temperature

Abstract:Palladium diselenide (PdSe2), a noble transition metal dichalcogenide has attracted increasing attention in recent years due to its outstanding semiconductor properties. In this study, 2D PdSe2 nanofilms with thicknesses ranging from 2 to 28 nm and their heterostructures with Si substrates (PdSe2/Si heterostructures) were synthesized via a simple selenization method. Electrical transport characterizations based on field-effect transistor devices indicate that the few-layer PdSe2 nanofilms exhibit a p-type semiconducting behavior. The optimal sensing performance of the PdSe2/Si-8 sensor (8 nm-thick PdSe2) exhibits a comparable response toward NO2 gas (ΔR/Ra = ∼7.2% to 100 ppb and ∼18% to 1 ppm) at room temperature (RT). This response may result from the heterostructure effect and maze-type surface. Additionally, the PdSe2/Si-8 sensor has selectivity toward NO2 compared with other gases including NO, H2, CO, NH3, and C2H5OH. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the largest adsorption energy and charge transfer between NO2 and the PdSe2 surface, which coincides well with the experimental results. Moreover, the PdSe2/Si-8 sensor also exhibits repeatability and long-term stability during about 4 months at RT. Preparation of SnS2/MoS2 with p-n heterojunction for NO2 sensing

Abstract:Conventional metal sulfide (SnS2) gas-sensitive sensing materials still have insufficient surface area and slow response/recovery times. To increase its gas-sensing performance, MoS2 nanoflower was produced hydrothermally and mechanically combined with SnS2 nanoplate. Extensive characterization results show that MoS2 was effectively integrated into SnS2. Four different concentrations of SnS2-MoS2 composites were evaluated for their NO2 gas sensitization capabilities. Among them, SnS2-15% MoS2 at 170 °C demonstrated the greatest response values to NO2, 7.3 for 1 ppm NO2, which is about three times greater than the SnS2 sensor at 170 °C (2.58). The creation of pn junctions following compositing with SnS2 was determined to be the primary reason for the composite's faster recovery time, while the heterojunction allowed for the rapid separation of hole-electron pairs. Because the MoS2 surface has multiple vacancy defects, the adsorption energy of these vacancies is significantly higher than that of other places, resulting in increased NO2 adsorption. Furthermore, MoS2 can serve as active adsorption sites for SnS2 micrometer sheets during gas sensing. This study may help to build new NO2 gas sensors.

Abstract:The unique features of SnS2 make it a sensitive material ideal for preparing high-performance nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensors. However, sensors based on pristine tin disulfide (SnS2) fail to work at room temperature (RT) owing to their poor intrinsic conductivity and weak adsorptivity toward the target gas, thereby impeding their wide application. Herein, an ultrasensitive and fully recoverable room-temperature NO2 gas sensor based on SnS2/SnS p-n heterojunctions with an accumulation layer was fabricated. The amounts of SnS2/SnS heterojunctions can be effectively controlled by tuning the ratios of tin and sulfur precursors in the easy one-step solvothermal synthesis. Compared with pristine SnS2, the conductivity of SnS2/SnS heterostructures improved considerably. Such improvement was caused by the electron transfer from p-type SnS to n-type SnS2 because the Fermi level of SnS was higher than that of SnS2. The sensing response of optimized SnS2/SnS toward 4 ppm NO2 was 660% at room temperature, which was higher than most reported sensitivity values of other two-dimensional (2D) materials at room temperature. The superior sensing response of SnS2/SnS heterostructures was attributed to the enhanced electron transport and the increased adsorption sites caused by the SnS2/SnS p-n heterojunctions. Moreover, the SnS2/SnS sensor showed good selectivity and long-term stability. These achievements of SnS2/SnS heterostructured sensors make them highly desirable for practical applications.
2D/2D heterojunction of g–C 3 N 4 /SnS 2 : room-temperature sensing material for ultrasensitive and rapid-recoverable NO 2 detection

Abstract:Abstract Heterojunction engineering plays an indispensable role in improving gas-sensing performance. However, rational heterojunction engineering to achieve room-temperature NO 2 sensing with both high response and rapid recovery is still a challenge. Herein, a 2D/2D heterojunction of g–C 3 N 4 /SnS 2 is designed to improve the sensing performance of SnS 2 and used for ultrasensitive and rapid-recoverable NO 2 detection at room temperature. The pristine SnS 2 fails to work at room temperature because of its high resistivity and weak adsorption to NO 2 . After combination with g–C 3 N 4 nanosheets, the g–C 3 N 4 /SnS 2 -based sensor exhibits an extremely high response (503%) and short recovery time (166 s) towards 1 ppm NO 2 at room temperature. The improved sensing performance is primarily attributed to the increased adsorption sites and enhanced charge transfer induced by the 2D/2D heterojunctions with large interface contact area. This achievement of g–C 3 N 4 /SnS 2 2D/2D heterostructures demonstrates a promising pathway for the design of sensitive gas-sensing material based on a 2D/2D heterojunction strategy.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has sparked immense interests as a novel gas sensing material due to its inherent layered structure and large surface-to-volume ratio. However, the obstacles of insufficient sensitivity and poor recoverability for MoS2-based gas sensors need to be resolved for the further applications. Herein, we report the construction of MoS2 nanosheets based p-n heterostructures for the purposes of achieving excellent NO2 detection at room temperature. After functionalized with fin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles, the optimal MoS2/SnO2 heterostructure-based gas sensor exhibits a response of 18.7 to 5 ppm nitrogen dioxide (NO2), an outstanding selectivity compared with other gases, and an excellent long-term stability for 4 weeks. The enhanced sensing performance of MoS2/SnO2 heterostructures can be ascribed to the unique 2D/0D nanostructures and the formation of numerous p-n heterojunctions. Therefore, construction of p-n heterostructures provides a versatile solution to overcome the sensing issues of MoS2-based gas sensors and also paves a new way for others room temperature sensor applications.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a common gas that can cause irreversible damage to human health, emphasizing the essentiality of developing highly sensitive NO2 sensors with good selectivity and low consumption. Here, a facile in–situ cation exchange method was employed to successfully synthesize interlayer expansion Ag intercalated SnS2 with S vacancies for NO2 gas sensing. The presence of S vacancies strongly improves the electronic structure of SnS2 and significantly facilitates the interaction of NO2 with the sensor. Moreover, the interlayer spacing of SnS2 is expanded by 0.48 Å after Ag intercalation, prompting diffusion behavior of NO2 molecules between the interlayers. Benefiting from the factors above, SnS2–Ag exhibited excellent gas sensing performance for NO2 with a high response to 5 ppm NO2 (response value = 8.37) and detection limits as low as 200 ppb at a low temperature of 100 °C. This work combines defect engineering with interlayer engineering to provide a new perspective for extending the application of SnS2 gas sensors.
