Abstract:Distortion coordination between pile and soil in composite ground under rigid foundation was seldom considered so far in the computation of settlement of the foundation. Analyzing of data from several field tests showed that the distribution of side friction of pile and settlements of pile and soil could be analyzed by load transfer method,Mindlin solution and elasticity solution respectively. The equation was then established for solving the settlement of composite ground under rigid foundation considering distortion coordination; and the corresponding computer program was developed at the same time. Optimization back analysis was used for identifying parameters in the program. Finally,the method presented in this paper is proved reliable from a case study.
On the Dissipation of Negative Excess Porewater Pressure Induced by Excavation in Soft Soil

Abstract:Unloading induces negative excess porewater pressure in soil mass around a foundation pit during excavation. In this work, the dissipation rule of negative excess porewater pressure after excavation was studied. Analytical formulas for calculating the negative excess porewater pressures and the effective stresses were derived based on one-dimensional consolidation theory and Terzaghi's effective stress principle. The influence of the dissipation of negative excess porewater pressure on earth pressure inside and outside a foundation pit and the stability of the retaining structure were analyzed through a numerical example. It was indicated that the dissipation of negative excess porewater pressure is harmful to the stability of the retaining structure and that rapid construction can make full use of the negative porewater pressure.

Abstract:Excavation will induce negative excess pore water pressure in soft soil. In this work, the dissipation rule of negative excess pore water pressure was studied. Analytical formulas for calculating the negative excess pore water pressure and the heave of pit base were derived based on one-dimensional consolidation theory and Terzaghis effective stress principle. Finally, the influence of the permeability coefficient and the stiffness of soil mass on the heave of pit base was analyzed through a numerical example. The calculated result showed that the dissipation of the negative pore water pressure causes the decrease of effective stress and the heave of pit base.

Abstract:As it has long been recognized that negative skin friction resistance most possibly exists on piles when the soil around pile move downward relative to the pile,especially in collapsible loess in Northwest China.Once it is disposed improperly,the pile foundation will lose its efficacy.So to determine the distribution law of the negative skin friction is of important practical significance in engineering.Concerning the many factors,which always influence the disiribution and numerical value of negative skin friction, the field immersion test under static load is still the most effective method in measuring the negative friction.Combined with the experiment of foundation disposal of a power plant in Shanxi Province,the distribution law of negative friction and the influence of collapsible deformation on the bearing capacity of piles are analyzed;and some beneficial results are obtained through these analysis, that will provide instruction for the engineering application.
A Method for Determining Critical Thickness of Base Soil of Foundation Pit Subjected to Confined Water

Abstract:The change of pore water pressure and soil effective stress in foundation pit base, subjected to fast increase of confined water pressure due to sudden rise of the influent river during flood peak, have been analyzed. Based on soil permeability and its two damage mechanisms (i.e. tensile failure and shear failure), a new method for determining critical thickness of base plate of foundation pit is presented based on elastic theory. The new method is compared with traditional method to calculate the critical thickness of base soil of foundation pit by case study. Results show that the new method considering indices c(u), phi(u), and the size of foundation pit base, is more reasonable than the traditional method. However, the results calculated by the method in this paper reduce to the results by traditional method as for highly permeable soil like sand.

Abstract:The negative friction existing on the surface of working single piles will change their vertical capacity character,when the field apparently settled under large-scale vertical loads.The negative friction was calculated when the neutral point was on different depth,a new method was introduced to get the Q-S curve of negative frictional pile from the Q-S curve of field-tested pile.Calculation proved the validity of this method.The results showed that the neutral point depth is the key to fixing the Q-S curve of negative frictional pile.Different depth of neutral point will yield different Q-S curves;and the deeper the neutral point depth,the greater the foundation settlement and pile axial force.One case study was carried out to show the application of the present method for designing the capacity of negative frictional piles.

Abstract:A new earth pressure calculation model was proposed based on the p-y curve equation of horizontal load piles by introducing the factor of time effect and considering the arching effect's influence on pile-anchor supporting structure.The nonlinear influence of the protecting structure's displacement and the contribution of time and arching effect on the earth pressure were considered.The numerical results accorded with the experimental results.The influence of the partially and the fully developed wall friction on the earth pressure of bolt point was analyzed.Results show that the value of wall friction is related to the earth pressure distribution of bolt point.The fully developed wall friction shall be adopted in engineering computation.

Abstract:The negative skin friction resistance caused by collapsible deformation after water soaking into collapsible loess will reduce the vertical bearing capacity of piles.The principle and variation rule of the negative skin friction of piles in collapsible loess were analyzed.With the analysis of on-the-spot survey curves and the prior research results,a new negative friction distribution curve,which is applicable to collapsible loess,was brought out.Based on the effective stress method,a calculation method of negative skin friction resistance in collapsible loess area was also put forward.

Abstract:Based on the imperial college pile(ICP) method,a new method is proposed to calculate the bearing capacity of large-diameter-tubular-pile,in which the contribution of soil plug is considered.However the inner pile friction is not taken into account due to the small value,not full-length distributed and conservative consideration.In this approach,the end resistance is the average value of tip resistance from the pile tip to the depth of 2 times of the pile diameter.In view of the unpopularity of ring shear test,the peak value of direct shear test is used for the friction angle of the interface by amplification of 1.2,which is verified through test results.The radial effective stress is very important in bearing capacity calculation,and a simplified method with a few parameters is put forward.This new approach is much simpler than ICP method,and could have satisfactory estimations if compared with α-method,Randolph methods and VF method.The test results prove that the new method is reliable.

Abstract:Surcharge loading, phreatic level decline and other factors cause negative skin friction on the peripheral surface of piles, which increases engineering insecurity. Negative skin friction has been researched deeply by filed, scale and numerical test. However, few studies have considered the influences of drainage boundary conditions on pile settlement considering consolidation of surrounding soils. Based on 1D perfect elasto-plastic model, this paper demonstrates that pile-soil elastic relative displacement at the position of neutral point is zero, and derives a simplified settlement calculation method. Calculation results show that change of neutral point position makes the pile-soil relative displacement not zero. Finally, the proposed method is verified by FEM method and used to analyze the influence of different drainage cases on the pile settlement.

Abstract:The revised density method is improved based on analysis of interactions between ground soil, fill and piles in flow sliding. The density of fill outside the center of sliding surface needn't be revised. The density of soils among piles outside the center of sliding surface is increased due to the positive frictional stress over the tensile neutral plane and decreased due to the negative frictional stress below the tensile neutral plane. The influences of tensile strength of piles on position of the tensile neutral plane and the revised density of soils among piles are taken into account. The counterforce of end resistance of piles is transformed into the soil density below piles. It is shown by analysis that the safety factor of stability is affected little by change of the revised method for density of fills and soils among piles outside the center of sliding surface, but is obviously affected by the revision of density of soils below piles when there is soft substratum. It is shown that the results of stability analysis of a sliding project by the improved revised density method for rigid-pile composite foundation coincides with the project practices.

Abstract:The pile foundation of bridges under unregulated surcharge loads experiences a complex force pattern, which is subject to active loads and passive loads. In this paper, a more comprehensive calculation method for the response of active-passive piles was proposed, which considered the effect of pile-soil interface friction and soil stress states on the passive loads. First, the Ito theory was improved by adopting the adhesion c a and external friction angle φ a to characterize the pile-soil interface friction. Then, the soil around the pile in elastic, elastoplastic, and plastic flow states was considered to calculate the variation of the passive load. Finally, a nonlinear p - y curve was introduced to establish the calculation model of active-passive piles, and the finite difference program CPAPP was prepared for the solution. The results show that the pile response calculated by CPAPP is consistent with the field measurement, indicating that the proposed calculation method has high accuracy. When the soil is in an elastic state, the pile-soil interface friction does not affect the passive load. When the soil is in a plastic state, the passive load is closely related to soil strength parameters and pile-soil interface friction parameters.

Abstract:A simplified approach was proposed to analyze the negative skin friction calculation of special-shaped pile considering pile-soil interaction under surcharge. Based on the concentric cylinder shearing theory, considering the changes of pile shape (such as, taper angle and diameters of pile base, etc.), the load-transfer of special-shaped pile was built. The accuracy of the developed simplified approach was verified by numerical simulation model with the same condition. Then, the influence factors, such as, taper angles, the diameter of pile base, surcharge, and pile-soil interface parameters were analyzed and discussed. The results show that the developed simplified approach can calculate NSF of special-shaped pile under surcharge effectively. A limited parametric study indicates that in many practical situations special-shaped piles (such as belled wedge pile shown in this work) offer a design option that is more economical than traditional uniform cross-section piles.

Abstract:Based on the feature of vertical crack of pile caps and settlement of angled pile in a piled wharf, we think the reason lies in that the angled piles in the piled wharf do not enter into favorable bearing stratum and the oblique piles are acted by negative frictional resistance. It is proposed that the thixotropy of soft ground during pile driving and the river deposition can also exert the negative friction resistance to the pile. The coefficient value of negative friction resistance is compared between the silty ground and sandy soil.
FEM Analysis and Design of Long Short Pile Composite Foundation

Abstract:A practical case of the long short pile composite foundation is presented,in which the long and short piles are made of reinforced concrete and cement soil respectively.The stress distribution and displacement of the long short pile composite foundation、whole long pile composite foundation、whole short pile composite foundation and nature foundation under the same geological condition have been calculated and compared by FEM. The results show that by use of the long short pile composite foundation, the whole settlement is reduced effectively and the settlement difference of foundation slab is cut down. Long pile makes shallow soil stress reducing and deeper soil displacement falling. A design method of the long short pile composite foundation is introduced. After comparing the calculated value of the settlement with the actual measurement , it is proved that the design method is available.
Numerical analysis on the performance of a cushioned foundation with a mixture of both rigid and flexible piles

Abstract:The composite foundation supported by piles with various stiffness is a recently developed ground improvement method for resisting vertical load in the thick soft soils. In this composite foundation system, the flexible piles are designed to strengthen shallow soft soil, while the rigid piles are used to reduce settlement of the foundation system. A flexible cushion below the rigid foundation cap is used to redistribute the external load and to adjust stress levels acting on the piles and surrounding soils. The soft soil underneath the cushion can also resist a portion of the applied load. As a result, the composite foundation system can resist much higher load with less settlement. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses are conducted to investigate the performance of the cushioned composite foundation system with a combination of both rigid and flexible piles. The effects of several factors, such as, stiffness of the flexible pile, length of rigid pile, stiffness of cushion, that might affect the consolidation behavior of the composite foundation are studied by using the commercial software ABAQUS. The numerical investigation results indicate that there are optimized values existed among these factors. The loading induced pore pressure in the soft subsoil has minimal influence on the stiffness of flexible piles. Whereas, the settlement of composite foundation can be adjusted by changing the length of rigid piles. Copyright ASCE 2009.

Abstract:The measured internal force in bracing of foundation pit is always larger than that calculated with the classical earth pressure theory. One of the important reasons is the decrease of the amount of passive earth pressures inside pits. Based on the excavation, a new method to calculate the effective vertical stress of excavated soils was proposed. The after-excavated vertical stress was the same as the self weight of soils before excavation added the minus stress superimposed stress caused by excavation, at the same time, the over-consolidation strength index was used to calculate passive earth pressure.

Abstract:The interaction between pile and soil of discrete material piles composite foundation is studied. Experimental investigation indicates that the pile is damaged under some depth to the top. So the composite foundation is divided into 3 different sections: expanding, un-expanding and substratum. According to deformation compatibility condition, a new method to calculate the settlement of the composite foundation is deduced by elastic mechanics. An example is given; and the calculation result is consistent well with the on-the-spot monitoring result.

Abstract:To simulate the stress migration in local damage and cracking of piles, ABAQUS software was used to establish a 3-D analytical model of composite foundation improved by rigid piles with concrete damage plasticity model. Stress and failure mechanism of piles were studied in the process of embankment reclamation and loading. The results show that concrete damage model has good performances in predicting the reduction of pill stiffness and redistribution of internal forces; the linear elastic model yielded higher moment and lower displacement; Unlike ultimate moment under pure bending, the maximum moment in pile depends on its location with respect to the embankment; When the embankment is approaching failure, piles outside the shoulder tend to subject to stretch-bending or compression-bending failure while piles close to the embankment center mainly bear vertical pressure; pile failure could hardly occur in the first place as it is usually caused by failure of embankment slope; Shear failure unlikely occur in rigid piles.
