Abstract:It is a radical but pressing problem to measure the group refractive index of dispersive material both accurately and rapidly in optical engineering field. In this paper, a white-light spectral interferometric system employing a fiber-optic spectrometer is developed for solving this problem. The system takes advantage of the characteristic of fiber-optic spectrometer which can get all the interferometric information by a single shot image without any mechanical scanning. Compared with the traditional windowed Fourier transform, a wavelet transform algorithm is used to directly extract the group delay rather than the phase from the interferogram. Therefore, the new method can provide a simple and fast solution, while still maintaining high accuracy. Based on this white-light Michelson interferometric system, fused silica and BK7 glass samples are measured respectively and the results agree well with the theoretical values over a broad spectral range. At the end of this paper, different mirror positions are used to verify the repeatability of our method.

Abstract:In this paper, a new method of calculating the diffraction efficiency for diffraction / refraction infrared hybrid system is given. By using this method, an automatic measurement system is designed. This system covers the wavelength range of 1 similar to 3 mu m, 3 similar to 5 mu m and 8 similar to 12 mu m. We use a blackbody as the energy source, put the lens which is to be measured above a computer controlled turntable in order to gain different results in different filed of view. We also have several relay lenses to cope with long or negative focal length. We use two types of detectors to deal with wavelength range of 1 similar to 3 mu m and 3 similar to 12 mu m. Both the detector and preamplifier are assembled together so we can easily change them for different wavelength ranges. To improve the accuracy of the measurements, a new theory of measuring the main energy is developed to minimize the negative impacts of other diffraction orders and the environment. We use an adjustable slit cooperating with a two-axis stage to scan the focal point and by adjusting the width of the slit we can reduce the energy of other diffraction orders and the environment that may come into our detector. During the experiment process we can manually control the slit and two-axis stage to improve the efficiency and use our computer program to improve the accuracy. The energy modulator and lock-in amplifier also help to improve the accuracy of our system. We designed two standard lenses for the 3 similar to 5 mu m wavelength range. Both of them are made of the same material, have the same focal length of 200mm and their shape is almost the same. The only difference between them is that one of them is pure refraction piece which acts as a reference and the other one has a diffraction surface to achromatic aberration. The result fits our theory well and the possible causes of the differences are discussed. This system has a practical meaning in the quality evaluating of infrared hybrid system.

Abstract:The development of photonic quantum information technologies requires research on the properties of optical adhesives at cryogenic temperatures. In the process of developing microfiber (MF)-coupled superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs), we invented a cryogenic-temperature refractive index (RI) measurement method based on a kind of MF device. The device was put into the cryostat to observe the variance of MF transmittance with temperature. Then an RI–temperature relationship was established through the correspondence between the confinement conditions of MFs of various diameters in an optical adhesive– M g F 2 environment and transmittance–temperature curves. Using this method, we analyzed the thermal-optical properties of a commercial fluorinated acrylic optical adhesive and obtained the RI values of the adhesive at various temperatures. The results were successfully applied in the development of broadband and high-efficiency MF-coupled SNSPDs.

Abstract:The optical properties of solids is of great importance in condensed matter physics, and can be characterized by a set of optical constants. The most common experimental practice is to measure the sample's reflectivity at normal incidence over a broad frequency range, and then obtain the optical constants via the Kramers-Kronig transformation. In this article we introduce the basics of Fourier transform infrared reflectivity spectroscopy, the experimental setup, and an in-situ overcoating technique which can measure the reflectivity of samples, including those of small size or irregular shape, from several meV to several eV. This method should thus play an important role in the study of various single particle excitations or collective excitations in solids.

Abstract:Despite considerable efforts in developing curve-fitting protocols to evaluate the crystallinity index (CI) from X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, in its present state XRD can only provide a qualitative or semi-quantitative assessment of the amounts of crystalline or amorphous fraction in a sample. The greatest barrier to establishing quantitative XRD is the lack of appropriate cellulose standards, which are needed to calibrate the XRD measurements. In practice, samples with known CI are very difficult to prepare or determine. In a previous study, 14 we reported the development of a simple algorithm for determining fiber crystallinity information from Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Hence, in this study we not only compared the fiber crystallinity information between FT-IR and XRD measurements, by developing a simple XRD algorithm in place of a time-consuming and subjective curve-fitting process, but we also suggested a direct way of determining cotton cellulose CI by calibrating XRD with the use of CI IR as references.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a widely used characterization technique for studying chemical compositions and light-matter interactions in the infrared range. However, it remains challenging to use conventional FTIR equipment to characterize materials that are environmentally sensitive and/or have rough surfaces due to their dynamic response to external stimuli (e.g., humidity) and light scattering from the sample surface. Here, we describe an approach enabling quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurements of these challenging samples, including transmittance, reflectance, and emissivity. We designed and 3D-printed a miniaturized environmental chamber that can be directly inserted into the sample holder of a conventional integrating sphere to perform total transmission and reflection measurements in controlled environments. Moreover, a calibration method was developed to exclude light scattering from rough surfaces of the sample and the distortion created by infrared windows. To illustrate the potential application of this method, we have performed quantitative infrared measurements, both specular and diffusive, on a sapphire standard reference with a specular surface, as well as a textile sample that has a rough surface and is dynamically responsive to changes in humidity. The calibrated results measured with the equipped chamber match those measured without the IR windows, demonstrating the viability of our environmental chamber and the proposed calibration method. This quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurement technique may help advance fields such as metasurfaces and adaptive textiles, where samples are often rough, dynamically responsive, and/or environmentally sensitive.

Abstract:The surface orientation of polyester fibers has been studied by a modified sampling technique using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The fiber axes were arranged parallel to incident radiation first, and then perpendicular to it. The differences in total absorbance and relative intensity changes in the spectra obtained show the features of specular reflection. The technique has the advantage over ATR that there is no optical contact problem.

Abstract:Although polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been widely studied as metal-free photocatalyst, the description of its structure still remains a great challenge. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy can provide complementary structural information. In this paper, we reconsider the representative crystalline melamine and develop a strategic approach to theoretically calculate the IR vibrations of this triazine-based nitrogen-rich system. IR calculations were based on three different models: a single molecule, a 4-molecule unit cell, and a 32-molecule cluster, respectively. By this comparative study the contribution of the intermolecular weak interactions were elucidated in detail. An accurate and visualized description on the experimental FTIR spectrum has been further presented by a combinatorial vibration-mode assignment based on the calculated potential energy distribution of the 32-molecule cluster. The theoretical approach reported in this study opens the way to the facile and accurate assignment for IR vibrational modes of other complex triazine-based compounds, such as g-C3N4.

Abstract:Information on boll distribution within a cotton plant is critical to evaluate the adaptation and response of cotton plants to environmental and biotic stress in cotton production. Cotton researchers have applied available conventional fiber measurements, such as the high volume instrument (HVI) and advanced fiber information system (AFIS), to map the location and the timing of boll development and distribution within plants and further to determine within-plant variability of cotton fiber properties. Both HVI and AFIS require numerous cotton bolls combined for the measurement. As an alternative approach, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy was proposed to measure fiber maturity (MIR) and crystallinity (CIIR) of a sample as little as 0.5 mg lint. Extending fiber maturity and crystallinity measurement into a single boll for node-by-node mapping, FT-IR method might be advantageous due to less sampling amount compared with HVI and AFIS methods. Results showed that FT-IR technique enabled the evaluation of fiber MIR and CIIR at a boll level, which resulted in average MIR and CIIR values highly correlated with HVI micronaire (MIC) and AFIS maturity ratio (M). Hence, FT-IR technique possesses a good potential for a rapid and non-destructive node-by-node mapping of cotton boll maturity and crystallinity distribution.

Abstract:Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is a well-established nondestructive method for highly selective identification and real-time tracing of LCPs chemical species. Additionally, the development of polarized IR, time-resolved IR and two-dimensional correlation IR gives more information about LCPs. In this review, current progress in characterization of LCPs by traditional FT-IR and novel spectra analysis technologies (mainly two-dimensional correlation analysis) is presented, especially in the investigation of hydrogen-bonds in LCPs, compatibility of liquid crystalline copolymers and blends, and orientation behaviors upon different perturbations (temperature, electric field, light, strain). Concrete examples in each case are also presented here helping illustrate the applications of different infrared spectral analysis methods.
Measurement of the Elasticooptic Effect of Crystal Using Fiber White-light Interferometry

Abstract:Starting from the index ellipsoid, the elasticooptic effect of crystal is analyzed. The relation between the stress along the optical axis of trigonal crystallographic system and the refractive index is established. The optical property of crystal is anisotropic and the change of refractive index with the stress is little. The ability of the white-light interferometry is explored to measure the refractive index of anisotropic material using high spatial resolving power of the white-light interferometry. Moreover, an improved method using white-light interferometry and all polarization-maintaining fiber Michelson interferometer to measure group refractive index is introduced, using grating displacement sensor to increase the displacement precision of scanning mirror. The change of quartz crystal refractive index is measured under the different outside force, and the elasticooptic coefficient is determined. The elasticooptic coefficients of quartz crystal P33 and P13 are 0.110 and 0.279 respectively, the precision reaches 0.001.

Abstract:The rapid development of flexible electronics industry has stimulated a great deal of research interest on ultrathin organic films. To analyze the molecular orientation change of the ultrathin films or molecular layers under different conditions is essential for understanding the physics of the film growth or crystallization process and for optimizing the performance of the relevant devices. With this respect, IR spectroscopy seems more desirable than the various diffraction techniques due to its advantages of simple facility, ease of operation and nondestructive measurement, etc. In this short review, the basic experimental approaches and capabilities of two IR techniques, namely, polarized Transmission Infrared Spectroscopy (TIRS) and Infrared Reflection Absorption Spectroscopy (IRRAS), are briefly introduced. In particular, their application for analyzing the molecular orientation are demonstrated through examples of films of two typical organic materials used in flexible electronics: the small molecule semiconductor pentacene and the ferroelectric copolymer P(VDF-TrFE). Finally, two other relevant IR techniques, PM-IRRAS and polarized Attenuated Total Reflection FTIR (ATR-FTIR), are briefly discussed.

Abstract:On the basis of ω-scan x-ray diffraction (XRD), quantitative and qualitative characterization methods for fiber texture are proposed. The physical meaning of ω-scan curve is discussed in detail, and it is shown that the relative intensity curve of ω-scan XRD for a certain crystal plane is proportional to the pole density of the plane. Then qualitative and quantitative characterization methods for fiber texture are proposed from the concept of pole density. The proposed methods can be used in any crystal system. As an example for experimental verification, an orientation distribution function (ODF) experiment and a series of ω-scan XRD experiments are performed on a sputtered platinum film. From the comparison between the result of the ODF experiment and that of the analyses on the ω-scan XRD experiments, it is proved that the proposed qualitative and quantitative methods are effective and simple.

Abstract:Bone mineral crystallinity is an important factor determining bone quality and strength. The gold standard method to quantify crystallinity is X-ray diffraction (XRD), but vibrational spectroscopic methods present powerful alternatives to evaluate a greater variety of sample types. We describe original approaches by which transmission Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), attenuated total reflection (ATR) FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy can be confidently used to quantify bone mineral crystallinity. We analyzed a range of biological and synthetic apatite nanocrystals (10–25 nm) and found strong correlations between different spectral factors and the XRD determination of crystallinity. We highlight striking differences between FT-IR spectra obtained by transmission and ATR. In particular, we show for the first time the absence of the 1030 cm −1 crystalline apatite peak in ATR FT-IR spectra, which excludes its use for analyzing crystallinity using the traditional 1030/1020 cm −1 ratio. The ν 4 PO 4 splitting ratio was also not adequate to evaluate crystallinity using ATR FT-IR. However, we established original approaches by which ATR FT-IR can be used to determine apatite crystallinity, such as the 1095/1115 and 960/1115 cm −1 peak ratios in the second derivative spectra. Moreover, we found a simple unified approach that can be applied for all three vibrational spectroscopy modalities: evaluation of the ν 1 PO 4 peak position. Our results allow the recommendation of the most reliable analytical methods to estimate bone mineral crystallinity by vibrational spectroscopy, which can be readily implemented in many biomineralization, archeological and orthopedic studies. In particular, we present a step forward in advancing the use of the increasingly utilized ATR FT-IR modality for mineral research.

These techniques include X-ray diffraction, thermal analytical techniques, molecular vibrational spectroscopy, microscopy observation techniques, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, nuclear quadrupole spectroscopy, etc. This work will provide a comprehensive guide to scientists and engineers in this field to characterize crystals in pharmaceutics and foods.

Abstract:<span>Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is an important tool for material characterization. However, due to the diffraction limit, conventional infrared spectroscopy cannot be applied to nanoscale material. In the past decade, FTIR nano-spectroscopy (nano-FTIR), combining scanning near-field optical microscopy and FTIR, has made significant progress. It provides scientists a powerful tool to study polymers, 2D-materials, semiconductor devices, and biomaterials at the nanoscale. In this review, we introduce the development and working mechanism of nano-FTIR, and summarize some typical applications in different research fields. The purpose of this review is to allow readers to understand the basic principles of nano-FTIR, its current development status, and the application potential of this technology. Finally, we briefly summarize current challenges faced by this technology and present some research directions that deserve attention in the future.</span>

Structural information of biopolymer nanofibrils by infrared nanospectroscopy

Abstract:<p>Biopolymer nanofibrils, such as chitin and silk nanofibrils, are abundant and critical structural components in nature and materials engineering. However, characterizing these nanofibrils at single fibrillar scale is still a challenging task. Herein, infrared nanospectroscopy (nanoIR), a technique that combines the advances of both atomic force microscopy and infrared spectroscopy, was applied to detect the chemical and structural information of single chitin and silk nanofibrils. The results of this study reveal that nanoIR is a powerful approach to identify the single biopolymer nanofibrils with spatial resolution reaching up to ∼10 nm. In addition, for silk nanofibrils, the results support that nanoIR can be used to analyze the relative content of each secondary structure by deconvolution, because the content of each secondary structure is consistent with the results obtained from the deconvolution of the traditional infrared spectrum. However, the prerequisite for this semi-quantitative analysis is the use of high signal-to-noise ratio spectra, and characteristic peak positions of each secondary structure in nanoIR spectra were predetermined.</p>

Abstract:This article aims to overview infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Simultaneously, it outlines mid-infrared (MIR), near-infrared (NIR), and far-infrared (FIR) or terahertz (THz) spectroscopy separately, and compares them in terms of principles, characteristics, advantages, and applications. MIR spectroscopy is the central spectroscopic technique in the IR region, and is mainly concerned with the fundamentals of molecular vibrations. NIR spectroscopy incorporates both electronic and vibrational spectroscopy; however, in this review, I have chiefly discussed vibrational NIR spectroscopy, where bands due to overtones and combination modes appear. FIR or THz spectroscopy contains both vibrational and rotational spectroscopy. However, only vibrational FIR or THz spectroscopy has been discussed in this review. These three spectroscopy cover wide areas in their applications, making it rather difficult to describe these various topics simultaneously. Hence, I have selected three key topics: hydrogen bond studies, applications of quantum chemical calculations, and imaging. The perspective of the three spectroscopy has been discussed in the last section.
