Abstract:The main principle, developing history and present status of multi-parameter and multi-functional fiber grating sensing techniques are introduced. And the technology of multi-parameters measurement at the same time with one fiber-grating sensor is explained. The discrimination techniques for cross-sensitivity of temperature and strain have been discussed in detail. The multi-parameter sensing head configurations involving fiber-grating devices have been overviewed and sorted. Novel multi-functional fiber grating sensing systems have been proposed and analyzed.

Abstract:The combination of mid-IR fiber optics and FTIR has made the non-invasive determination of samples in situ, with long distances, and in vivo possible. In this paper domestic mid-IR fiber optics was improved to investigate the transmission ability of fiber optics and its application to the sample determination. New design was applied to obtaining one bare fiber optics, which has a minor energy loss and higher signal-to-noise ratio. The spectra of H2O/EtOH and tissue samples were measured using the new designed fiber optics and the results show that home-made mid-IR fiber optics can be applied to the field of determination of general and biological samples.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is an important tool for material characterization. However, due to the diffraction limit, conventional infrared spectroscopy cannot be applied to nanoscale material. In the past decade, FTIR nano-spectroscopy (nano-FTIR), combining scanning near-field optical microscopy and FTIR, has made significant progress. It provides scientists a powerful tool to study polymers, 2D-materials, semiconductor devices, and biomaterials at the nanoscale. In this review, we introduce the development and working mechanism of nano-FTIR, and summarize some typical applications in different research fields. The purpose of this review is to allow readers to understand the basic principles of nano-FTIR, its current development status, and the application potential of this technology. Finally, we briefly summarize current challenges faced by this technology and present some research directions that deserve attention in the future.

Abstract:Advances in on-chip spectroscopy are resulting in improved chemical and biological sensing applications. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) technology, a leading spectroscopy system, exhibits an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio over other spectroscopy designs by utilizing Fellgett’s advantage. To achieve this, FTIR spectrometers have a variable arm path length and use modulation of the index of refraction to enable spectral decomposition of light from the interferogram. However, this approach often requires discrete optical elements resulting in a costly and bulky design. In addition, it results in increased system complexity from mechanical moving parts and reduced system robustness. Many on-chip spectrometers use spectrum splitting, a much less effective spectrometry system, due to size and power constraints. These designs have a reduced signal-to-noise ratio because they lack the Fellgett advantage present in FTIR spectrometers.

Abstract:Fiber strain sensor based on principle of F-P interference technology,has been one of the optical sensors which are developing rapdily in recent years.The existing research results are integrated,the working principle of F-P interferometer is introduced,which includes intrinsic and extrinsic F-P sensors and other strain sensors based on F-P,and demodulation algorithm of interferential cavity length,types of FFPI sensors and applications of FFPI sensing technology in structure strain monitoring and its related problems and development direction.

Abstract:FTIR microspectroscopy has many advantages,such as high sensitivity,tiny area analysis etc.It has wide applications in material science,medicine,biology,and so on.Because of the low brightness of traditional in- frared light source,the spatial resolutio and the signal-to-noise (S/N) will do lower.It has restricted the application of FTIR microspectroscopy.Synchrotron infrared radiation has become the ideal light source to FTIR microspectroscopy because of its high brightness.The spatial resolution is incresased close to infrared wavelength and diffraction limit. The quality of the infrared micropectroscopy has an evident improvement.

Abstract:The mid-infrared fiber lasers in the 2–3.5 μm spectral regions have been extensively applied in many application fields, such as biomedicine, telecommunications, military and nonlinear optics. With the improvements of the fiber components, the pumping regimes and other related technologies, the mid-infrared fiber lasers have made significant progress over the past decades and gradually become comparable with or supersede the traditional lasers in terms of certain lasing performance. In this review, from the beginning with the overview of fiber materials for the mid-infrared regions, we briefly summarize and review the latest research progress of mid-infrared continuous-wave (CW) and short pulse fiber lasers, including Tm3+-, Ho3+-doped, Tm3+-Ho3+ co-doped silicate fiber lasers for the 2 μm region and Er3+-, Ho3+-doped, Ho3+-Pr3+ co-doped ZBLAN fiber lasers for the 2.8–3.5 μm region. The advances of saturable absorbers applied in the mid-infrared pulse fiber lasers are also explored. Finally, the future prospects and challenges concerning the further development of mid-infrared fiber lasers are discussed and highlighted.

Multifunctional Portable Optical Measuring Instrument Based on Y-Fiber Optics

Abstract:Based on grating diffraction principle, optical fiber transmission principle and optical interference principle, a multi-functional portable optical measuring instrument is constructed in this paper. The optical measurement visualization spectrometer based on CCD photoelectric image sensor is designed and assembled. The "Y" optical signal transmission fiber optical path suitable for multi-function measurement is improved and designed. The multi-function optical measurement system is built by combining with remote controlled multi-color LED lights. The spectral analysis, solution concentration monitoring and film thickness measurement are realized. The experimental results show that the observable wavelength range of the spectrometer is about 340-1050nm and the resolution is 1nm. The solution concentration can be obtained by measuring absorbance with optical fiber spectrometer. The film thickness measuring instrument can accurately measure the thickness of the micron film, and the measurement accuracy can reach 1.25 {\mu}m. It is proved that the instrument integrates multiple functions, has high measurement accuracy and wide range, and realizes non-contact measurement.

Abstract:Distributed fiber-optic sensing (DFOS) is one of the most important parts in the fiber-optic sensing field, due to the following advantages: 1) there is no need to manufacture sensors on the fiber; 2) fibers are able to realize transmission and detection simultaneously; 3) long-distance/large-scale sensing and networking can be accomplished prospectively; 4) the spatial distribution and measurement information of physical parameters such as temperature, strain and vibration, can be obtained continuously along the fiber link, and the number of sensing points on a single fiber can be up to several tens of thousands. Due to the above tremendous superiority, DFOS has found wide application prospects, including perimeter security, oil/gas exploration, electrical facilities and structure monitoring, etc. This paper overviews recent progress in ultra-long distributed fiber-optic static (Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer) and dynamic (phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer) sensing at Key Laboratory of Optical Fiber Sensing and Communications, UESTC. This paper summarizes our work on both basic and application studies.

Functional fiber-optic sensors get the temperature by the nature of fiber-optic such as phase,polarization,intensity.But fiber-optic in transmitted ones plays the role of transmitting the optic sign in order to avoid the surroundings disturbance. In the end there are ideas about fiber-optic sensors' development trend and characteristics in the future.

Abstract:We design an optical fiber spectrometer based on optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In optical fiber Fourier transform spectrometer spectra information is obtained by Fourier transform of interferogram, which recording intensity change vs. optical path difference. Optical path difference is generated by stretching one fiber arm which wound around fiber stretch drive by high power supply. Information from detector is linear with time rather than with optical path difference. In order to obtain high accuracy wavenumber, reference beam is used to control the optical path difference. Optical path difference is measured by reference laser interference fringe. Interferogram vs. optical path difference is resampled by Brault algorithm with information from reference beam and test beam. In the same condition, one-sided interferogram has higher resolution than that of two-sided interferogram. For one-sided interferogram, zero path difference position must be determined as accurately as possible, small shift will result in phase error. For practical experiment in laboratory, position shift is inevitable, so phase error correction must be considered. Zero order fringe is determined by curve fitting. Spectrum of light source is obtained from one-sided interferogram by Fourier cosine transform. A spectral resolution of about similar to 3.1cm(-1). is achieved. In practice, higher resolution is needed. This compact equipment will be used in emission spectra and absorption spectra, especially in infrared region.

Abstract:Based on many years research, a number of novel fiber-optic sensors and systems are developed by the Fiber Optics Group at University of Electronic Science & Technology of China (UESTC). This paper presents a review of the applications of these sensors and systems developed in recent years, including: (1) Micro fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensors for high temperature strain measurement applications; (2) Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for safety monitoring applications in transportations industry; (3) Long-distance Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) for high performance temperature/strain measurement; (4) Fiber-optic fences based on FBG and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (F-OTDR) for intrusion monitoring applications.

Abstract:Various applications of fiber optic current sensor are explored now. In this paper a new full-optical current sensor is designed. The fiber-optic current sensor is based on the Faraday rotation effect, and moreover, in this paper the mechanism of Faraday rotation effect of cylinder fiber model is explained. In the present research experimental platform has been set up. And then the Comsol software has been used to simulate the system' transmission field, which could be achieved by calculating the transmittance of light propagating through POF. Finally the results obtained respectively by traditional structure and new structure are compared. The results may be helpful for the further research on the fiber optic current sensor.

Abstract:Optical frequency comb is a kind of broad spectrum coherent light source, which is composed of a series of discrete spectral lines with equal frequency interval and has ultrahigh time-frequency accuracy. Since its birth, optical frequency comb has brought revolutionary changes to the development of precision spectroscopy, optical measurement, coherent optical communication, optical clock and other applications. In recent years, researchers have extended the frequency comb to the mid-infrared spectrum region (2-20 μm) by using novel laser gain media, nonlinear frequency conversion and micro-resonator techniques, and further expand the application range of optical frequency comb. In this paper, the generation mechanism, latest development and application of mid-infrared frequency comb are introduced.

Abstract:Fiber optic imaging elements is a general term for optical fiber products including fiber optic plate (FOP), fiber optic inverter (FOI), and fiber optic taper (FOT), which is a light and image transmission array made of optical glass fibers that are drawn, regularly arranged, vacuum melted-pressed, secondary thermal processed and optically processed. They are mainly used in photomultiplier devices for low-light-level night vision and particle detection equipment. Its devices have been widely used in many fields such as low-light night vision, electronics, aerospace, nuclear diagnostics, high-speed photography, etc., especially in the field of military operations at night combat, guidance, early warning, and electro-optical countermeasures. With the continuous development of glass fiber material, preparation technology and performance requirements, the optical fiber imaging element has been significantly improved, and its application field has been continuously expanded. This paper reviews the materials, structures, principles, characteristics, preparation processes and detection technologies of optic fiber imaging elements. It mainly summarizes the development situation, latest technological progress, and several major devices in optical applications. And the bottlenecks in the preparation and detection of fiber-optic imaging elements at present are analyzed. Furthermore, the development trend and challenges of fiber-optic imaging elements evolving to larger size with smaller diameter of fiber, higher contrast, higher resolution, lower distortion, ultra-short and ultra-light are prospected.

Abstract:Fiber-based optical frequency combs, characterized by compact configuration and outstanding optical properties, have been developed into state-of-the-art precision instruments which are no longer used just for optical frequency metrology, but for a number of applications, including optical clocks, attosecond science, exoplanet searches, medical diagnostics, physicochemical processes control and advanced manufacturing. This short perspective presents some of the milestones and highlights in the evolution of fiber-based optical frequency combs and the technical revolution that are brought by them for a wide range of applications. Along the way, both the challenges and opportunities in the future development of the fiber-based optical frequency comb technology have been described as well.

Abstract:This article reviews my new optical fiber sensing (OFS) research activities in China for the last ten years at Chongqing University and University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, since I returned from UK in 1999. The research progress in long period fiber gratings (LPFGs), distributed fiber sensing systems and microfiber sensors is introduced. For LPFGs, the processing method with high-frequency CO2 laser pulses types of LPFGs fabricated and the related applications for both optical sensing and optical communication are described. For distributed fiber sensing systems, the fiber-optic polarization optical time domain reflectometer (POTDR), fiber-optic phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR) and Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) are developed, respectively. For microfiber sensors, we mainly focus on the knot resonator and its application for sensing of the refractive index and acceleration, etc.
