Abstract:Butyl ethanoate was synthesized by esterification of ethanoic acid and n butyl alcohol using p toluene sulphonic acid as a catalyst. When ethanoic acid is 100mmol, n(ethanoic acid) ∶n(butyl alcohol) ∶n(catalyst)=3 ∶1 ∶0.006, the yield was 99.14% after 1.5h reaction with no water carrying reagent.

Abstract:SnCl 4/SiO 2 was applied as a new catalyst to the esterification of acetic acid and sec-butyl alcohol. It has high activity and excellent selectivity as well as no corrosion to the facilities. Various reaction parameters such as ratio of alcohol to acid, catalyst amount, reaction time and reaction temperature were carefully studied. The optimum reaction conditions were: molar ratio of acetic acid to sec-butyl alcohol 1.8∶1, amount of catalyst was 1.5 g, reaction time was 6 h, reaction temperature 150 ℃. The conversion of acetic acid reached 89.31 % and the selectivity of esterification was 100% under the optimum conditions.

Abstract:5-Bromo-2-hydroxy-3-(1-propionyl) benzoic acid methyl ester was synthesized by using salicylic acid as raw material.The mass of catalyst,molar ratio of methanol to salicylic acid in the esterification,the effects of the solvent,feeding mode and molar ratio of reactants in the C-acylation were respectively investigated. The product was characterized by IR and GC-MS.The result indicated that the optimum technical conditions were as follows:m(ion exchange resin):m(salicylic acid)=1.00%,n(methanol):n(salicylic acid) = 7:1,chloroform as solvent;ester was added into the chloroform solution of aluminum chloride;n(aluminum chloride):n(5- bromo-salicylic acid methyl ester):n(propionic anhydride) = 2:1:1.Under these conditions,the total yield of desired product was 74.52%.

Abstract:The catalytic amination of n-butylamine and methanol,which is high in atom utilization,was conducted to produce N,N-dimethyl-n-butylamine economically and environmentally.The catalysts were prepared by impregnation of Cu,Ni,Co on the phosphoric acid treated γ-Al2O3 and the processes were studied in a tubular fixed-bed reactor.The characteristics of the catalysts and the reaction conditions were observed experimentally.Results showed that the catalyst with Co mass fraction of 30%～31% and Ni mass fraction of 9%～10% performed better in the amination.The conversion of 81.7% of the n-butylamine and the selectivity of 72.9% for the desired product were obtained under the proper reaction conditions at 0.3 MPa,160 ℃,0.3 h-1 and molar ratio of methanol∶butylamine=6∶1.
Methanesulfonic Acid As a More Efficient Catalyst for the Synthesis of Lauraldehyde Glycerol Acetal

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to describe a more efficient catalyst for the synthesis of lauraldehyde glycerol acetal. Catalytic effect of methane sulfonic acid and p-toluenesulfonic acid were compared. With a mixture of 0.67 wt.% methanesulfonic acid in relation to lauraldehyde, equimolar amounts of glycerol and lauraldehyde being stirred at 110 degrees C for 2.5 h, the yield of the product was 76.32 %. When p-toluenesulfonic acid was used, the amount of the catalyst was 0.91 wt.% and the yield of the product was 62.91 % after reacting for 2.5 h at 120 degrees C. The result reveals that methane sulfonic acid is more efficient. Surface tension measurements showed that critical micelle concentration of the product catalyzed by methanesulfonic acid was 5.33 x 10(-5) mol . L-1, and at this point the surface tension could achieve about 24 mN m(-1).

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous strong acid catalyst has been synthesized through the copolymerization of p -toluenesulfonic acid and paraformaldehyde with sulfuric acid as catalyst. The novel catalyst owns the strong acidity as much as 4.0 mmol/g, while Nafion and Amberlyst-15 only has the acidity of about 0.8 mmol/g. Furthermore, the catalyst possesses the advantages of the high thermal stability (200 °C) and low cost for the simple synthetic procedure. The catalytic activities of the novel catalyst were taken through esterification of acetic acid and ethanol and acetalization of benzolaldehyde and 1,2-ethandiol. The results showed that the novel catalyst showed much higher activities than the Amberlyst-15 and owned even the comparative activity to sulfuric acid, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the replacement of the traditional homogeneous catalyst for the green process.

Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.

Abstract:Abstract:Copper p-toluenesulfonate was prepared and used as the catalyst in the esterification of cinnamic acid with butanol.The effects of alcohol / acid molar ratio,reaction time and amount of catalyst have been investigated.The products was characterized by means of refractive index, elemental analysis and FT-IR.The yield can be over 95%under the optimum conditions that molar ratio of butanol to cinnamic acid,2:1;amount of catalyst,1.5%(molar percentage of cinnamic acid);120 minutes reaction time and reflux temperature.The catalyst can be reused by simple phase-separation after reaction.It is used repeatedly for 5 times without obvious loss of activity and with the yield still over 90.0%.

Abstract:The alkylation of toluene with tert-butyl alcohol(TBA) is carried out with phosphotungstic acid supported H-mordenite(PW/HM) as catalyst in a 100 mL stainless steel batch reactor equipped with a stirrer.The physicochemical properties of PW/HM with different PW loadings are characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),ammonia program temperature desorption(NH3-TPD) and thermogravimetric(TG) techniques.Their catalytic performances are investigated for the tert-butylation of toluene.When the PW loading is as high as 25%,PW can be highly dispersed on the surface of HM.The calcination temperature of catalyst is 350℃.The influences of various reaction conditions on 25% PW/HM catalyst are discussed.It is found that,when using 25% PW/HM as catalyst,36.3% conversion of toluene and 82.1% selectivity of p-tert-butyltoluene(PTBT) can be obtained under following optimal conditions: 160℃ of reaction temperature,0.6 MPa of initial pressure,3 of molar ratio of tert-butyl alcohol to toluene,5 of w(reactant)/w(catalyst).

Abstract:Diisopentyl oxalate was synthesized from oxalic acid and isopentyl alcohol with copper p-toluene sulfonate as catalyst. The optimal conditions were: 0.2 mol oxalic acid, molar ratio of isopentyl alcohol to oxalic acid 3. 5 : 1, 1.5 g catalyst, 20 mL cyclohexane as water carrying agent, reaction time 2.5 h at reflux temperature. The esterification yield was up to 98.5 % under the optimal conditions. Copper p-toluene sulfonate can be reused after simple phase separation. The esterification yield was still up to 96% after the catalyst was reused for 7 times.

Abstract:p-tert-butylbenzoic acid(PTBA) was synthesized from oxidation of p-tert-butyltoluene(PTBT) in a tailored bubbling reactor over cobalt acetylacetonate(Ⅱ) catalyst.The oxidant was air,and the reactor was operated under atmospheric condition.A serial reaction mechanism for PTBT oxidation was proposed based on the distribution of oxidation products.The effects of reaction condition such as air flow rate,reaction temperature and catalyst concentration on PTBT oxidation were investigated,and the appropriate reaction conditions were obtained.PTBT conversion and PTBA yield reached 54.9% and 94.8% after reaction 8 h,respectively,under the conditions of air flow rate of 150 mL/min,reaction temperature of 150 ℃ and mass fraction of Co 0.003%.

Abstract:Green oxane was synthesized from isobutyraldehyde and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol(TMPD) catalyzed by different copper salts.Copper p-toluene sulfonate was chosen as most effective catalyst for the reaction.Effects of different solvents,catalyst dosage,mole ratio of aldehyde to diol and reaction time on conversion of TMPD and selectivity to green oxane were investigated.Optimum reaction conditions are:n(isobutyraldehyde)∶n(TMPD) 3∶1,catalyst 0.34 mmol,toluene 10 mL,reaction time 1.5 h and reaction temperature 110 ℃.Under the conditions,conversion of TMPD and selectivity to green oxane is 94.4% and 99.8%,respectively.Copper p-toluene sulfonate catalyst can be reused.After 5 recycles,conversion of TMPD is 90.1% and selectivity to green oxane keeps at 99.2%.Moreover,copper p-toluene sulfonate is a very efficient catalyst in other acetalization and ketalization processes.

Abstract:Dibutyl succinate was synthesized from succinate acid and n-butanol with nanometer H3PW12O40/SiO2complex heteropoly acid as catalyst and toluene as azeotropic water stripping agents. The experimental results showed that nanometer H3PW12O40/SiO2was an ideal catalyst for the synthesis of dibutyl succinate.The optimum technical conditions were summed up as follows: when the amount of succinate acid was 0.1 mol, mole ratio of n-butanol to succinate acid was 3.0:1, the dosage of catalyst was 2.0% of the total quality of succinate acid, the use level of water-carring tobuene was 10mL,refluent reaction time was 120min. Under this conditions, the esterification yield was 99.3%.
An Experimental Modification to the Preparation of di-n-butyl ether from 1-butanol for the Undergraduate Teaching Course of Organic Laboratory

Abstract:To explore a greener and safer experimental preparation method for di-n-butyl ether, a modification to the preparation of di-n-butyl ether from 1-butanol was used in this study by replacing the traditional concentrated sulfuric acid as the catalyst with p-toluenesulfonic acid under the guidance of computational calculations. The effects of reaction temperature, catalyst quantity, and other parameters on the reaction were investigated. The catalyst's recovery and reuse were explored. The results reveal that p-toluenesulfonic acid has a catalytic efficiency comparable to that of concentrated sulfuric acid in this experiment, that it is safer and easier to operate, and that it can be recovered and reused using simple procedures, which meets the requirements of green chemistry. The findings of this study may be utilized to enhance the di-n-butyl ether preparation experiment, which can be used in the Organic Chemistry Laboratory course at colleges.

Abstract:Ethyl chloroacetate was synthesized from chloroacetic acid and ethyl alcohol with nanosized rare earth composite solid superacid SO_4~(2-)/ZrO_2-La_2O_3 as catalyst.The effects of molar ratio of chloroacetic acid to ethyl alcohol,catalyst dosage,water-carrying agent(cyclohexane)dosage and reaction time on the yield of ester were discussed.Experimental results showed that nanosized rare earth composite solid superacid SO_4~(2-)/ ZrO_2-La_2O_3 was an excellent catalyst.The optimum reaction conditions were as follows:chloroacetic acid 0.1 mol,molar ratio of alcohol to acid 3.0:1,nanosized rare earth composite solid superacid SO_4~(2-)/ZrO_2- La_2O_3 1.0 g,cyclohexane as water-carrying agent 15mL,reaction time 2 hours.The esterification ratio was up to 94.3% under the above optimum conditions.

Abstract:Cerous methanesulfonate was synthesized and used as the catalyst in the esterification of citric acid with butanol.The effects of amount of catalyst,alcohol/acid molar ratio and reaction temperature have been investigated.The products were analyzed by means of FT-IR spectroscopy.The optimum conditions for the synthesis of TBC over cerous methanesulfonate are : molar ratio of butanol to citric acid,4.50∶1;amount of catalyst,0.25%(molar percentage of citric acid) and reaction temperature,120～130℃.The yield can reach to 98.6%.The catalyst can be reused by simple phase-separation after reaction.It is used repeatedly for 5 times without obvious loss of activity and with the yield still over 90.0%.

Abstract:An SBA-15 loaded CuSO 4 catalyst was designed and prepared for the highly selective production of 2,6-di- tert -butyl- p -cresol (BHT) from p -cresol and isobutylene. The acidity of solid acid catalysts was altered by varying the loading amount of CuSO 4 . Among them, 10% CuSO 4 /SBA-15 exhibited the greatest catalytic performance in the alkylation reaction with a BHT yield of 85.5%. After four cycles, the yield of BHT exceeded 70%. Overall, the catalyst has excellent catalytic performance and can be utilized as a catalyst for efficient BHT production.

Abstract:The effective method of synthesis of 3-methyl-2-butenoic acid,the cheap 2-Methyl-3-butyn-2-ol was taken as starting material,by Meyer-Schuster rearrangement to 3-Methyl-2-butenal.After oxidized 3-Methyl-2-butenal by air,the title compound was obtained.The conditions of Meyer-Schuster rearrangement and oxidation reaction were investigated in detail.The result showed that using liquid paraffin as solvent,rearrangement reacting at 115～125℃ for 3 hrs,3-methyl-2-butenal 85% yield with more than 98% purity was obtained.Using traces CuCl as catalyst,blowing air into 3-methyl-2-butenal below 35℃,3-methyl-2-butenoic acid 90% yield with more than 97.5% purity was obtained.The method was considered a good one with advantages such as short procedure,high yield,starting material cheap and easy to get and environmentally friendly.
