Abstract:Honeycomb absorbing materials were measured using the method of free space in this paper. The reflectance of honeycomb absorbing materials was calculated and simulated, and it was verified based on the measured results. It was demonstrated that this test method was feasible. Through studying on absorbing properties of honeycomb, the results have showed that the radar absorbing properties of honeycomb are related to electromagnetic parameters, as well as thickness of the dip-coatings. With the increase of thickness of the dipping layer, the radar absorbing capability of high frequency and low frequency wave are significantly increased. It is worth noting that the resonance peak moved to the low frequency with the increase of dipping layer thickness. These results are useful for design of honeycomb absorbing materials.

Abstract:A multisection step-impedance honeycomb absorbing structure is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Excellent intrinsic impedance matching and low reflection are realized by providing a step-impedance transition between air and metal in the microwave band. The wideband absorption mechanism of the honeycomb absorbing structure is analyzed using a step-impedance model, and the particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to obtain the optimal step impedance. Two absorbing structures were simulated: The double-layer structure had an absorption frequency band of 3.9–12.4 GHz and a thickness of 9 mm, and the triple-layer structure had an absorption frequency band of 2.2–12.4 GHz and a thickness of 15 mm. The measured reflectivity values were consistent with the calculated results, thereby confirming the validity of our designs for the absorbing structure.

Abstract:Structural radar absorption material possesses both wave absorption and load bearing functions.Microwave-absorbing composite sandwich structures have been widely used because of its light weight,high strength as well as perfect property of electromagnetic wave absorption.The finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method has been applied to the numerical simulation of electromagnetic scattering for equilateral-hexagon honeycomb sandwich structure and corrugated plate sandwich structure radar absorbing materials.RCS(radar cross section) values of two types of structural wave absorbing materials as well as complete metal structure,which have the same dimension,have been computed by means of numerical simulation.Moreover,electromagnetic scattering characteristics of different shape honeycomb and corrugated plate structures are also studied respectively.Finally,stealth performance curves of honeycomb structure are obtained with respect to different incident frequencies(X-band).

Abstract:Honeycomb sandwich structures are susceptible to liquid ingress, which causes a serious degradation of performance. Herein, a near-field microwave nondestructive detection technique was proposed to detect, identify, and quantitatively evaluate liquid ingress in honeycomb sandwich structures. Based on the microwave reflection spectrums, liquids of different polarity properties were identified. The amplitude of reflection microwaves was found nearly linear with respect to the height of the intruding liquids in the near field of the coaxial adapter probe. A simple characteristic peak method (CPM) based on line scans was presented and applied to quantify the size of liquid ingress region, and it turned out to be quite accurate with relative errors less than 0.5%. In summary, the near-field microwave testing technique proposed in this study is effective to detect, identify, and quantify liquid ingress in honeycomb sandwich structures.

Abstract:This letter proposes a new method for determining the properties of dielectric materials. A dielectric sample in free space illuminated by an incident field from a nearby antenna produces a scattered field, which will affect the input impedance of the antenna. The change of the input impedance of the antenna can then be used to determine the permittivity and the loss of the dielectric sample. The measurement setup using a microstrip antenna has been examined in detail. Experimental results have been presented to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Industries need a better understanding of the materials to shorten design time. The accurate measurement can provide valuable information to properly use the material for solid design or monitoring processes. Every material has a unique electrical characteristic that depends on its dielectric properties. This paper presents the free-space measurements to determine the dielectric properties of the material under test. The main objective was to measure the dielectric properties of different materials at microwave frequencies. The frequency range in this measurement setup is 8–12 GHz (X band). The measurement setup includes a Vector Network Analyzer, horn antennas, calibration kit, and simulation software to determine the dielectric properties of the material under test. In this work, the transmission coefficient (S-parameter) was measured to obtain the amplitude and phase of the material under test. This study developed an extraction procedure by finite element simulation. The measurement setup was remodeled in the HFSS simulation according to all parameters used in the measurement setup settings. Simulations are used to extract the dielectric properties of the material under test from measurement results. The extraction result was tabulated and compared with the other references.

Abstract:A new and simple method based on cavity perturbation theory is presented in this paper, which is for measurement permittivity of dielectric thin films. Through rectangle resonator twice cavity perturbation, thin films permittivity can be obtained by measurement resonator frequency and calculating formula. Experiment results show that measurement precision is good, the measurement error of real permittivity is less than 7%. Some methods to improve measurement imaginary of permittivity is present by taking some calculating formula analyse.

Abstract:A theoretical model was developed to predict the effective thermal conductivities of honeycomb sandwich panel based on the work of others,and the results of an example show that the theoretical values agreed well with those practical ones. To measure the effective thermal conductivities,an experimental apparatus was designed and built,and a sample made of aluminum was measured under steady-state.The standard deviation between measured and predicted was within 7% when the average temperature was higher than 150 ℃.The analysis and experimental methods given in this paper can be used to evaluate the thermal performance of honeycomb sandwich structures.

Abstract:Honeycomb sandwich structures (HSSs) are excellent candidates for light and efficient microwave-absorbing materials. In this work, we design an HSS using SiO2 fiber-reinforced epoxy resin (SiO2f/ER) composites as both the top and bottom layers to improve the impedance matching with free space. Target dielectric properties of the honeycomb and coated lossy material of the HSS were calculated based on the multilayer transmission line theory, metal backplane model, and homogenization theory. In addition, the interface effect between the SiO2f/ER and honeycomb of the HSS was discussed theoretically, experimentally, and numerically, indicating a 1–4% contribution of microwave absorption resulting from the interface. By analyzing the equivalent resistance, equivalent capacitance, as well as equivalent inductance, the enhanced microwave absorption of HSS is attributed to the formation of the interfacial transition zone, which benefits both impedance matching and electromagnetic loss.

Abstract:To determine the dielectric constant of thin film materials with thickness around one or several microns at microwave frequencies, a novel method based on modified cavity perturbation theory is presented. Corresponding measurement fixture is composed of Agilent 8720ES VNA, a rectangular cavity with small slots, and crystal slices used as the carriers of thin films. By measuring the shift in resonant frequency, the dielectric constant of thin film can be determined. 810 nm thick (Mg0.95Ca0.05)TiO3 thin film deposited by RF magnetron sputtering was used as sample to verify the feasibility of this technique, and the measured dielectric constant is 21.1, which is close to that of the bulk material. The measurement error of this method is about 6%, which mainly comes from the measurement errors of resonant frequencies and the thickness of thin film. This error can be reduced by using a cavity with higher Q, or by using thin film samples with larger dielectric constant or with thickness bigger than 1 micron. Experimental results show that the method presented in this paper is feasible and has good accuracy for dielectric thin film.
In situ near-field microwave characterization and quantitative evaluation of phase change inclusion in honeycomb composites

Abstract:Inclusions are common threats for honeycomb composites. Conventional non-destructive testing (NDT) methods mainly focused on inclusions in a specific phase state, while little attention has been paid to phase change inclusions under different service conditions. Herein, we conducted in situ detections of a phase change paraffin inclusion in honeycomb sandwich panels at different temperatures with a near-field microwave method. The scanning amplitude and phase images of subwavelength core cells and inclusions were obtained with super-resolution. The paraffin inclusion (melting point, 58<math>°C</math>) was characterized with a large amplitude decrease and phase delay in both the solid and liquid phases. Besides, the liquid paraffin inclusion at 100<math>°C</math> presented a whole shift of amplitude increase and phase decrease relative to the solid phase at 20<math>°C</math>. The boundaries of the phase change inclusion were accurately characterized using a characteristic peak method (CPM) with relative errors less than 0.5%. In summary, the near-field microwave method is feasible and effective for super-resolution detection and quantitative evaluation of phase change inclusions under varied service conditions.

Abstract:The honeycomb sandwich composite material has been widely applied in engineering due to its excellent mechanical performance. The elastic properties of honeycomb core is of crucial importance in efficient mechanical analysis. An approach on determining the equivalent elastic modulus of honeycomb core using experimental modal data is proposed in this paper. Based on analytically predicted elastic constants of the pure core, the initial finite element model of a honeycomb panel is constructed using a three-layer sandwich theory; according to errors that exist in analytically estimated equivalent parameters and the sensitivity analysis of modal frequencies with respect to system parameters, the out-of-plane shear moduli Gcxz and Gcyz are selected to be determined. Consequently, the two parameters are determined by minimizing an objective function which is formulated with vibration test and numerical modal data. Comparative investigations are conducted to illustrate that the initial values of the parameters with physical significance play an important role in the identification procedure. The presented method can provide accurate and reliable predictions of material constitutive parameters of honeycomb core.

Abstract:In this paper,the principle of the measurement for the quiet zone performance of a microwave anechoic chamber is presented.Detailed measurement procedures to an actual rectangular chamber using a log-periodic antenna and vector network analyzer are simultaneously given.The method and steps provided here are valuable for building,using and maintaining a microwave anechoic chamber,and also useful for the reference to the measurement of antennas and microwave backward scattering conducted in the chamber.

Abstract:Honeycomb structure is increasingly applied in various fields due to its high strength-to-weight ratios. However, due to the complex wave field in the structure, how to detect the defect accurately and efficiently is always an important problem. In this article, the honeycomb core, instead of being an obstacle to obtain the dispersion characteristic for traditional guided wave method, provides a way to calculate the wave propagation by being taken advantage of its space periodicity. By analyzing, simulating, and experimental testing, it is exhibited that there is a gap in the dispersion relation of the honeycomb structure which caused by the interaction between the local resonant vibration of the skins and the bending vibration of the structure. This gap disappears in the debonding area. Then a nondestructive testing method is proposed to detect the debonding defects based on this feature. The detection results of this proposed method are accord with that of ultrasonic C-scan. The results indicate that this method is suitable for detecting and locating the debonding defects in honeycomb structure with quite high sensitivity and efficiency, and it has a great potential to be widely used in filed test of honeycomb structure for its high feasibility.

Abstract:This paper presents a general method of calculating the effective thermal conductivity of the material with honeycomb structure, performing the heat transfer analysis for structure element, with which the effective thermal conductivity of the material with different regular honeycomb structures (including transparent and non-transparent honeycomb structures) and different films can be estimated. As an illustration, the effective thermal conductivity of some honeycomb in use is calculated.

Abstract:By replacing the cell wall of traditional rhombus honeycomb with a curved surface, two kinds of honeycombs with curved cell walls were designed and fabricated by fused deposition modeling(FDM) method. In-plane compressive experiments were conducted by the electronic universal testing machine to investigate the quasi-static mechanical response and deformation evolution of the specimens. Finite element models of the proposed honeycombs with different relative densities and gradient arrangements were established based on solid elements. Numerical simulations were performed by ABAQUS and the reliability of the numerical simulation results is verified by comparison with experimental results. Meanwhile, the effects of relative density and gradient type on the mechanical properties and energy absorption performance of honeycombs with curved cell walls were analyzed. It was revealed that with the relative density increases, the strength and relative stiffness of intersecting curved honeycomb(ICH) are significantly enhanced. The intersecting curved honeycomb(ICH) with a continuous gradient exhibits the best energy absorption performance compared with the conventional honeycombs.

Furthermore, honeycomb-like SnO2 configuration with various pore sizes can be prepared by altering the size of polystyrene (PS) nano-sphere. The microstructure, crystallographic structure, elemental chemical state and MA properties of honeycomb-like SnO2 were measured by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric-difffferential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and Vector network analyzer (VNA), respectively. Interestingly, the microwave absorption properties were determined by their honeycomb configurations. Furthermore, honeycomb SnO2 prepared using 148 nm PS spheres as template, presented a minimal RL of −47.4 dB at 11.1 GHz with the layer thickness of 3.2 mm. Meanwhile, the value of RL less than -10 dB was found in the range of 9.8–15.2 GHz. The combination of interfacial polarization, dielectric loss and cellular structure can inhibit the propagation of electromagnetic waves and dissipate microwave energy through heat or other forms. It is believed that the honeycomb-like structures could be expected to be candidates for a new generation of absorbing materials.

Abstract:For measurements of dielectric properties of planar slabs of ceramic and composite materials, the authors have developed a free-space measurement system in the frequency range of 14.5-17.5 GHz. The key components of the measurement system are a pair of spot-focusing horn lens antennas, a network analyzer, and a computer. Because of the far-field focusing ability of horn lens antennas, the free-space measurements can be made at microwave frequencies in a relatively compact and simple measurement setup. The time-domain gating feature of the network analyzer and the thru, reflect, and line calibration technique were used to eliminate the effects of undesirable multiple reflections. The dielectric constants and loss tangents were measured for standard materials such as fused quartz, Teflon, and polyvinylchloride (PVC). Dielectric properties for Teflon and PVC were also measured in a waveguide medium for purposes of comparison with the free-space method.<>
