Abstract:Scientific instruments and facilities used for calibrating the dynamic angle error of inertial instruments have played more and more important roles in mechanism error research and accuracy improvement. Present attitude measurement methods can not simultaneously meet the requirements of the inertial instrument angle error calibration in dynamic environments such as linear or angular vibration. Based on the collaborative integration and modeling calculation of single-point laser Doppler vibrometer, this paper proposes a dynamic attitude measurement system that can completely realize non-contact real-time accurate three-dimensional rotation angle measurement, filling in the blank of non-contact dynamic angle error calibration of inertial instrument. Besides, we propose a distance calibration method to reduce the angle measurement error from 0.34 degrees to 0.0072 degrees, which fully satisfies the non-contact measurement requirements of the inertial instrument.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for intrinsic calibration of a multi-beam LIDAR system. Existing approach to solve the problem by taking the distance instrumental error model of the LIDAR as a constant, however, further research demonstrates the linear model is more accurate to describe the distance error of a laser measurement system. We use linear instrumental error model to calibrate the multi-beam LIDAR system. The optimization process is based on comparison the scan data with the ground truth environment. Experimental results show the efficacy of the calibration.

Abstract:Absolute interferometric testing of spherical surfaces is one of effective methods for ultra-precision testing, which can eliminate the systematic errors. In this paper, we discuss the absolute measurement of spherical surfaces and analyze the influence of errors existed in the organism comprehensively. To improve the testing precision, it is necessary to remove the alignment errors such as tilt and defocus. The traditional methods remove alignment errors by low-level approximation, so they may be not effective for the small F-number surface. To solve this problem, we propose a novel measurement with high-order approximation model. The simulation and experiment results show that: while the error between high-order approximation model and low-level approximate model is small on tilt, it is large on defocus, and the error will become larger when the F-number of testing surface becomes smaller; alignment errors can be well adjusted by our high-order approximation model.

Abstract:The basic principle of coordinate system registration method was introduced in order to evaluate the measurement accuracy of large‐scale metrology system in aircraft assembly .Then an explicit model was derived to mathematically describe the transformation parameter errors and the registration error .The model reveals the impacts of the layout of the enhanced reference system ( ERS ) points and the measurement errors of the ERS points of the laser tracker . T he uncertainty evaluation of the transformation parameter errors and the estimation of the registration error were fulfilled based on the derived model . Monte‐Carlo simulation was performed to simulate the coordinate system registration process .The proposed uncertainty evaluation method and the estimation method were validated .

Abstract:The geolocation accuracy of satellite laser altimeters is significantly influenced by on-orbit misalignment and ranging biases. Few researchers have investigated the weight matrix determination method, which plays a critical role in bias estimation. In this article, a systematic misalignment and ranging bias model was deduced. Based on the least squares criterion, a bias calibration method was designed for use with solid natural surfaces; and the weight matrix was defined according to the ranging uncertainty theory. Referring to the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (glas) parameters, the established model and method were verified using programming simulations, which indicated with a misalignment of tens of arc-seconds in the pitch and roll directions and a ranging bias of several centimeters, by using the weight matrix, the estimation accuracies of the misalignment and ranging bias increased by 0.22 and 2cm, respectively. Consequently, the geolocation accuracy increased by approximately 0.64m horizontally and 3cm vertically for a 1° sloping surface.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-accuracy calibration method for errors resulted from aberration in long focal length measurement, is presented. Generally, Gaussian Equation is used for calculation without consideration of the errors caused by aberration. However, the errors are the key factor affecting the accuracy in the measurement system of a large aperture and long focal length lens. We creatively introduce an effective way to calibrate the errors, with detailed analysis of the long focal length measurement based on divergent light and Talbot interferometry. Aberration errors are simulated by Zemax. Then, we achieve auto-correction with the help of Visual C++ software and the experimental results reveal that the relative accuracy is better than 0.01%. By comparing modified values with experimental results obtained in knife-edge testing measurement, the proposed method is proved to be highly effective and reliable.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the causes and effects of error in the Strapdown Micro-Electro-Mechanical System Inertial Measurement Unit (MEMS-IMU), utilizing a sensor calibration method based on a two-axis turntable. By considering deterministic errors such as sensor bias, scale factor, and non-orthogonality of the sensitive axis, an error model was established to assess their impact on measurement accuracy. An expression was provided to represent the relationship between sensor data collection and external input stimuli, storing the error parameters of the accelerometer and the gyroscope separately in parameter matrices. The error parameter matrix between input and output quantities was fitted using the least squares method, and error compensation was completed in conjunction with the error model. By comparing the original data with the error-compensated data, the calibration results were obtained. This improved the consistency of the measurements from the sensitive axes to the stimulus source, reduced the zero bias error of each sensitive axis, and enhanced the positioning accuracy of the Strapdown MEMS-IMU.

Abstract:The rotational inertial navigation system (INS) has received wide attention in recent years because it can achieve high precision without using costly inertial sensors. However, the introduction of the turntable causes additional errors, including mounting errors between the inertial measurement unit (IMU) axes and the turntable axes. Analysis, calibration and compensation of the mounting errors are necessary in rotational INS. In this paper, the mounting errors are introduced into the sensor model of a dual-axis rotational INS. Analysing the improved model indicated that the mounting errors’ effect on the IMU errors is inconspicuous, but the effect on the output attitude is significant. If the output attitude is not required, the mounting errors can be ignored; conversely, it is important to calibrate and compensate for such errors. A calibration method for the mounting errors is designed using the thin-shell (TS) algorithm, and the method's precision has the same order of magnitude as the residuals of gyro misalignment in the simulation test. Laboratory experimental results validate the theory and proved that the calibration and compensation method for mounting errors proposed in this paper helps improve the output attitude's precision without a precise installation.

Abstract:Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) are an emerging technology that has the potential for a multitude of uses. MEMS sensors are cost-effective units with small dimensions, but suffer from large random errors compared with their mechanical predecessors. It is hard to have an accurate description of sensor errors because the characteristics of errors are quite different among the MEMS inertial sensors with the same specifications. Installation errors result from the imperfection in welding the MEMS sensor which consists of a triaxial accelerometer and a triaxial gyroscope on a single-chip. Low-precision MEMS inertial sensors exhibit biases, scale factors, and large installation errors. According to the error characteristics of MEMS inertial sensors, a mathematical model was analyzed. The validity of the six-position test was verified by using the correction between the triaxial accelerometer and the triaxial gyroscope on one single-chip. One method to identify the intersection angle among the sensitive axes and the measured vector was analyzed. The test results show that the calibration can effectively correct the bias, scale factor and installation error of MEMS inertial sensors.
Geometric Analysis of Measurement Errors in a Surface Metrology Class with Closed-Loop Probes

Abstract:This paper presents a novel measurement error model for closed-loop surface metrology. In these surface metrology systems, the motion of the probe tip is strictly constrained on a parallel surface that is separated from the measured sample surface of constant displacement by closed-loop controllers. Examples of such metrology systems include constant signal mode scanning probe microscopes and coordinate measuring machines. The combined effect of volumetric errors and surface tracking controllers on the final measurement error was analyzed using an error model developed based on multi-body system theory and surface geometry. A comprehensive overview of the errors of a typical large-scale scanning tunneling microscopy system is provided as an example. Simulations were performed to illustrate the influence of the systematic errors on the final accuracy. Experiments were also conducted on the measurement of a typical micro-structured surface to both verify the proposed error model and establish a possible compensation scheme.

Abstract:Spacecrafts with the pure gravity environment are of great significance in precision navigation, gravity field measurement for celestial bodies, and basic physics experiments. The radiometer effect is one of the important interfering factors on the proof mass in a purely gravitational orbit. For the gravity field measurement system based on the inner-formation flying, the relationship between the radiometer effect on the innersatellite and the system parameters is studied by analytical and numerical methods. An approximate function of the radiometer effect suitable for the engineering computation and the correction factor are obtained. The analytic results show that the radiometer effect on the inner-satellite is proportional to the average pressure while inversely proportional to the average temperature in the outer-satellite cavity. The radiometer effect increases with the temperature difference in the cavity, and its minimum exists when the cavity radius increases. When the minimum of the radiometer effect arrives, the ratio of the cavity radius to the inner-satellite radius is 1.189 4. This constant is determined by the spherical cavity configuration and independent of the temperature and pressure distributions. When the ratio of the cavity radius to the inner-satellite radius is more than 10, it is believed that the cavity is large enough, the radiometer effect is approximately proportional to the square of the inner-satellite radius, and the influence of the outer-satellite cavity radius on the radiometer effect can be ignored.

Abstract:A space-stable inertial navigation system is characterized by long-term high accuracy and a complex error model. It is now in pressing need to calibrate the accelerometer at system level to guarantee high precision. The main challenge is how to simultaneously calibrate the overall 9 accelerometer errors in mooring state. We propose a new calibration method at system level by arousing different gravity cones of the platform to excite all the accelerometer errors. Firstly, observability of accelerometer errors are surveyed by grids means. We find that at least 3 orientations of the platform are required to calibrate all the accelerometer errors. Secondly, we determine the optimal combination of platform orientations by minimizing the condition number of observation matrix. Simulation results confirm a calibration accuracy at 1 x 10(-6) g. In addition, our method is easy to implement and can be applied in a relatively low cost.

Abstract:This paper proposes a theoretic error analysis framework as well as corresponding calibration methods for a mobile 3D data acquisition system equipped with LiDAR and GPS/IMU. Our framework considers inherent errors of variable sensors, installation errors, and time synchronization errors among different sensors. Our framework is enhanced by an empirical error analysis method based on a triangulated irregular network structure. Experimental results prove that the proposed error analysis methodology can provide accurate and efficient evaluation for mobile 3D data acquisition systems.
Joint On-Manifold Gravity and Accelerometer Intrinsics Estimation for Inertially Aligned Mapping

Abstract:Aligning a robot's trajectory or map to the inertial frame is a critical capability that is often difficult to do accurately even though inertial measurement units (IMUs) can observe absolute roll and pitch with respect to gravity. Accelerometer biases and scale factor errors from the IMU's initial calibration are often the major source of inaccuracies when aligning the robot's odometry frame with the inertial frame, especially for low-grade IMUs. Practically, one would simultaneously estimate the true gravity vector, accelerometer biases, and scale factor to improve measurement quality but these quantities are not observable unless the IMU is sufficiently excited. While several methods estimate accelerometer bias and gravity, they do not explicitly address the observability issue nor do they estimate scale factor. We present a fixed-lag factor-graph-based estimator to address both of these issues. In addition to estimating accelerometer scale factor, our method mitigates limited observability by optimizing over a time window an order of magnitude larger than existing methods with significantly lower computational burden. The proposed method, which estimates accelerometer intrinsics and gravity separately from the other states, is enabled by a novel, velocity-agnostic measurement model for intrinsics and gravity, as well as a new method for gravity vector optimization on $S^2$. Accurate IMU state prediction, gravity-alignment, and roll/pitch drift correction are experimentally demonstrated on public and self-collected datasets in diverse environments.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of center-of-mass measurement platform kinematics,and using the matrix complete differential-coefficient theory,the relationship between structure parameter error and moved platform pose error was derived,thereby the error model was presented.The error model was verified by computer simulation,and the result indicates that the error model established can approximately report the changing trend of the actual pose errors.

Abstract:The integral multi-station measurement system represented by indoor GPS (iGPS), workshop Measuring and Positioning System (wMPS) or a multi-camera system, realizes high-precision 3D measurement in large-scale space by constructing a global measurement field within a unified temporal-spatial reference. In advanced equipment manufacturing sites such as robot machining, large component (the fuselage or wing of airplanes) assembly and monitoring, the integral multi-station measurement system overcomes the drawbacks of the single-station measurement system such as laser tracker that can hardly balance the measurement range and accuracy. However, with the improvement of automation and intelligence degree in equipment manufacturing, the requirements on accuracy and robustness has become more and more strict, which is a huge challenge to existing measuring technologies. Limited by the measurement principle of multi-observation intersection, the change of geometry constraint in the integral multi-station measurement field will lead to spatially non-continuous error, degrading the performance of the integral multi-station measurement system. In this paper we first analyze the mechanisms and characteristics of spatially non-continuous error at the geometry constraint level. Basing on the error propagation model, a criterion for evaluating the significance of non-continuous error is then proposed for error identification. Finally, simulations and experiments are carried out, and this proposed criterion is verified to be effective.

Abstract:The Earth’s gravity field can be measured with high precision by constructing the purely gravitational orbit of the inner-satellite in Inner-formation Flying System (IFS), which is independently proposed by Chinese scholars and offers a new way to carry out gravity field measurement by satellite without accelerometers. In IFS, for the purpose of quickly evaluating the highest degree of recovered gravity field model and geoid error as well as analyzing the influence of system parameters on gravity field measurement, an analytical formula was established by spectral analysis method. The formula can reflect the analytical relationship between gravity field measurement performance and system parameters such as orbit altitude, the inner-satellite orbit determination error, the inner-satellite residual disturbances, data sampling interval and total measurement time. This analytical formula was then corrected by four factors introduced from numerical simulation of IFS gravity field measurement. By comparing computation results from corrected analytical formula and the actual gravity field measurement performance by CHAMP, the correctness and rationality of this analytical formula were verified. Based on this analytical formula, the influences of system parameters on IFS gravity field measurement were analyzed. It is known that gravity field measurement performance is a monotone decreasing function of orbit altitude, the inner-satellite orbit determination error, the inner-satellite residual disturbances, data sampling interval and the reciprocal of total measurement time. There is a match relationship between the inner-satellite orbit determination error and residual disturbances, in other words, the change rate of gravity field measurement performance with one of them is seriously restricted by their relative size. The analytical formula can be used to quantitatively evaluate gravity field measurement performance fast and design IFS parameters optimally. It is noted that the analytical formula and corresponding conclusions are applied to any gravity satellite which measures gravity field by satellite perturbation orbit.
Performance Analysis and Error Budget for Gravity-Measuring Satellite

Abstract:The aim of the gravity-measuring satellite, like GOCE, is to provide accurate model of the Earth's gravity field and of the geoid with high accuracy and spatial resolution. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to provide the classification of the error sources affecting the gravity field measurements and allocate performance requirements to the identified errors, which is an important task during all design phases and even beyond. The detailed study of the errors affecting the gravity-measuring satellite is complex, however a complete scheme of error analysis and allocation has been developed in this paper. Moreover, a simulation platform is designed based on simulink, which is served as the test bed for the performance analysis and error budget method of gradiometric satellites, providing good interaction and extensibility. Overall, the numerical simulation results, based on the well-established platform, clearly establish that error budget on the GGT trace is compliant with the specified requirements. It is illustrated sufficiently that the established platform is helpful for performance analysis and error budget of gravity-measuring satellite.

Abstract:By rotating a strapdown inertial navigation system (INS) over one or more axes, a number of error sources originating from the employed sensors cancel out during the integration process. Rotary angle accuracy has an effect on the performance of rotational INS (RINS). The application of existing calibration methods based on gyroscope measurements is restricted by the structure of the inertial measurement unit (IMU) and scale factor stability of the gyroscope. The multireadhead method has problems in miniaturization and cost. Hence, optical angle encoder calibration methods using accelerometers are proposed, on the basis of navigation error and accuracy requirement analyses for a single-axis RINS. The test results show that the accuracy of calibration methods proposed is higher than 4 arcsec (1σ).
