Abstract:The "Surrounding China seas" as a maritime cultural rim refers to the cross border East Asian sea-region surrounding China,in which developed one of the most prosperous maritime civilization in ancient world.The perspective of this "Surrounding China seas" refrains from wrong knowledge of maritime culture in the view of traditional "Chinese History" centralized on "Official Standard History" of ancient Chinese dynasties.The traditional "Chinese History" refers to Huaxia & Han centrism,advocating that ancient China had created its civilization on the base of inland agriculture culture of central plain,ignoring the key role of prehistoric indigenous maritime culture centralized in the southeast shoreline.The archaeological and ethnological investigation discovered that indigenous Baiyue had created a developed prehistoric maritime culture along the southeast shoreline of China and kept the maritime cultural interacted with Austronesian in Southeast Asia and pacific archipelogoes.This native cultural community of Baiyue and proto-Austronesian generated the earliest maritime civilization during the prehistory and early history of China.After then the Huaxia & Han ethnicity succeeded and developed "Sea Silk Road," "Maritime Ceramic Road" in "Surrounding China seas" after the Tang and Song dynasties.According to multidisciplinary investigation of history of ancient maritime ethnicities,seaports and local maritime cultures,the so called "Great Navigation Age" led by Han ethnicity had been inherited from indigenous maritime culture of Baiyue & Austronesian.

Abstract:Regional culture best embodies a featured cultural type within a space,manifested by dialect,food and drink,resident,weddings,funerals,festivals and folk beliefs.Its origin owes grestly to such factors as geographical environment,migration,political power,administrative division,ethnic groups,religion,and outside cultures.Regional culture has enriched the Chinese culture as a whole and it embodies the vitality of the Chinese culture.The research and development of regional culture are conducive to the preservation and continuity of traditional Chinese culture.With the progress in production,transportation,and communication technology,and with the acceleration of population mobility,some regional cultures tend to be integrated into the larger cultural context.Peope used to protect regional cultures passively.Now it is important to preserve them in a positive way so that they will not die out completely.It is urgent to preserve as many ancient relics as possible,not because we wish to go back to the ancient time someday but because we can memorize and cherish ancient civilizations.

Abstract:Abstract This essay explores the non-luxury materialities through which most people experienced the world, argues for the possibilities of a geographically based view of Ming and Qing material history, and demonstrates some methods for approaching hard-to-find sources. It is my contention that not only will learning about and paying attention to such regional materialities open up new areas of research, but historians will also become better equipped to assess what we think we know about “China.” Here, I will concentrate on the geologically homogeneous region of the Greater North China Plain and focus on temple buildings, ritual vessels, and images of gods.

Abstract:The idea that the common ancestor of the human family originated on the African continent about 7 to 5 million years ago is not much disputed by the academic community. However, humans who originated from the same place are nowadays very different. Due to historical origins, customs and living environment, not only are there huge differences in skin color, physique and appearance, but also cultural differences. As the saying goes, one side of the land nurtures one side of the people, and the difference in the geographical environment makes people from different regions not only different from other regions in terms of physiology but also significantly different in terms of culture and psychology. In this paper, we start with the difference in the geographical environment and analyze its influence on the religious, written aspects and science of Eastern and Western cultures. Thus, the conclusion that geographical differences are the root cause of the cultural differences between East and West is drawn to promote economic and cultural exchanges between East and West, and thus better promote the development of world culture.

Abstract:Abstract The archaeological cultures from Neolithic Age to early Iron Age in the Southeast of China including south of Jiangsu (江苏) and Anhui (安徽), Zhejiang (浙江), Jiangxi (江西), southeast of Hunan (湖南), Fujian (福建), Guangdong (广东), Guangxi (广西), Hainan (海南), Taiwan (台湾) and the adjacent coast of Vietnam, compose one of the special segment in the unity of “Assimilation and Integration of Pluralistic Cultures” in prehistoric and early history of China. These regional cultures with the continuingly temporal sequence have developed for thousands of years from early Neolithic Age to early Iron Age, “Relying on Huaxia Nationality of Central Nation and Facing Maritime Barbarians of Austronesian”, are just the material cultural heritages of the indigenous Miao, Man , Bai Yue and their ancestors in the “Southeastern Direction” of the ancient Chinese history.

Abstract:Fang Guozhen’s daring to rebel first in the late Yuan Dynasty, his occupation of the three counties in Eastern Zhengjing province, his lost of the developmental opportunities , his hesitancy and failure, all these behaviors, to a large degree, are due to his character and ways of behavior. And the latter bears close connection with the regional culture of Luqiao, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province. This comes as a typical case of a specific regional culture influencing and constraining people’s thoughts, ways of behavior and results. From this point, we can also find the complexity of the culture in East Zhejing province, especially in Luqiao Area.

Abstract:With the 'culture turn' and 'spatial turn',the past three decades have witnessed a shift from the 'old' super-organic view of culture to the critical 'new' one in the literature of human geography.This paper examines the three core concepts which are culture,meaning and representation,as well as its background.According to the new cultural geography,culture is not an intrinsic,unified whole,but composes of different practice of representation by different power conflict.Examining meaning is the main purpose of this study.How to interpret meaning in power and social relations becomes the central issue.Representation is what the landscape appears to the human and its multiple forms-the words and images-and scales have become the central topics in the study.Furthermore,the authors classify the epistemologies into five schools.Social Marxism which relies on the art historic iconography regards the landscape as a veil.Its duplicity lies in covering the hidden ideology,and the method including the art historic iconography.Later North American Marxists understands it as an unfinished product in the process of capitalism production and a form of social regulation.Thus,they offered a wider and deeper theory than Cosgrove and Daniels'.Based on linguistic post-structuralism,cultural landscape analyzes as text.Its meaning is created during inter-textual communication.UK-based cultural geographers stress cultures of landscape.In the realm of everyday landscape practices,regulatory processes and cultural discourses,it draws upon Michel Foucault's view of subject and discourse,so landscape can be regarded as shuttle.Feminists and post-colonists criticize landscape studies as a way of seeing and treat it as a gaze upon the land,a dominant way to the Others' world,and the eyes swing between the open rationality and the latent visual pleasure.Furthermore,from the perspective of nationality,landscape also contributes to the communism and the sharing particular landscape and history help to establish collective identity.Within the shifts of the ontology and epistemology,the 'new' cultural geography changes to cultural politics and landscape moves from a naturally given one to a politically contested one.The turn has brought other social scientific and humanistic disciplines into the study of cultural geography and attracted increasingly attention cross the boundary of discipline.

Abstract:Abstract In the course of the development of Chinese history, the long history has made the traditional Chinese culture show nationality and rich connotation. Chinese elements, as one of the main signs and symbols of traditional Chinese culture, are an important part of the development of Chinese and world civilization. In the design of each part of the new rural landscape, regional cultural elements such as paper-cut shadows and Chinese calligraphy were used. Can greatly enhance the characteristics of Chinese culture. Therefore, the application of Chinese traditional cultural elements to the modern new rural landscape design is the main task faced by the new rural landscape designer. In the construction of theory and practice, this article discusses the development of the new countryside by using the Chinese element symbol and the concept method of the beautiful countryside, as a reference for the new rural landscape design. This paper obtains the proportion of the importance of the new rural landscape design principles, with inheritance and continuity accounting for 24%. This paper is mainly divided into the gaps that can fill Chinese rural cultural elements in the new rural landscape design. At the same time, I hope that more people who love culture can better understand the local culture and experience the new beautiful rural scenery. It is hoped that the results of this study will re-awaken people’s attention to regional culture.

The Bayu administrative region division before Tang Dynasty: an exploration and explication

Abstract:According to the stage - dividing theory of the ancient Chinese history, textual criticism of the ancient books and records are made to the traditional administrative region division in Chongqing area before Tang Dynasty in the order of pre - state era(Ren Huang, Huang Di, Yao and Shun) , the slave society (Xia, Shang and Zhou) , the bourgeoning time of feudal society (the Spring and the Autumn, the Warring States Period) , the established time of feudal society (Qin and Han) and the developing time of feudal society (San Guo, Wei, Jing, Nanbei Dynasty) . The so - called Bayu Cultural Area can be verified in the historical documents concerning administrative region division before Tang Dynasty, in which three viewpoints were advanced: a. The history of Bayu tribal groups needs to be indited; b. Bayu culture evolved its characteristics and gained development under the influence of multi - cultures; c. The traditional administrative region division in Bayu area provides historical basis of the formation of regional or vernacular culture for the direct government of Chongqing under the central government.

Abstract:The study of the evolution of regional typology of archaeological cultures is essential in understanding the trajectory of cultural evolution from a temporal and spatial perspective. In this paper, we focused on the Taihu Lake region, one of the six major regional typologies of Neolithic archaeological cultures in China. By utilizing archaeological site data from the Neolithic Era in this region, our study investigates the evolution of typologies in archaeological cultures at both regional and sub-regional scales. From a broad perspective, quantitative methods were used to explore the cultural evolution process in the Taihu Lake region. The degree of social integration and intercultural inheritance can be reflected through the size of the site and the superimposition of cultural layers. In addition, climate and environmental data were combined to investigate its driving factors. Moreover, GIS (Geographic Information System) analysis methods were used to cluster and partition the cultures in the Taihu Lake region. By identifying distinct groups of sites, it is possible to deconstruct and analyze the interior of the cultures to study their distribution patterns and to explore the exchanges and expansions within the cultures. By integrating both research approaches, our study provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolutionary characteristics of the regional typology of archaeological cultures within the Taihu Lake region. These findings contribute to the development of quantitative methods for studying the evolutionary trajectory of archaeological cultural systems.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese historical geography is closely related to yange dili. Concepts relating to man-land relations are the underlying theories. The Yugong Society played a key role in the transformation of the Chinese historical geography from yange dili to modern historical geography. In the second half of the twentieth century, Chinese historical geographers made substantial contributions. Two main themes are the geographical change through time and the reconstruction of past geographies. Major research topics include changes of national territories and administrative divisions, changes of physical environments, urban geography, population, agricultural geography, social and cultural aspects, general and regional geographies, historical cartographics, and other aspects. Chinese historical geography is indigenous, but with western influence. Nevertheless, the Chinese historical geography is still very much descriptive and lags behind the west in theoretical research. Most Chinese historical geographers are originally trained historians. Hence they are more interested in studies of changes through time than in researches of spatial variations. Chinese historical geography is maturing as a respected field of study.

Abstract:The prototype of the Huaguo Mountain in the classical Chinese novel A Journey to the West written by Wu Cheng'en is the Yuntai Mountain in ancient Haizhou,known as Lianyungang at present that is long in history and rich in culture.As a matter of fact,the landscapes,local customs and traditions have exerted great influence upon the writing of the novel.The unique sea sight,colorful legends,special slang and idioms,and diversified customs are all reflections of the local sea culture in ancient Haizhou.

Abstract:Did the author of History of Han, the substantial ancestor of Chinese official history works, plagiarize his father's work or take advantage of the compilatory style of Sima Qian without his own originality This paper intends to clarify the truth of relevant individuals and events about History of Han so as to demonstrate it is the political environment and great events in Ban Gu's period that determined his historiographic orientation. However, it is against the traditional research on History of Han to argue that the process of its compilation was in cadence with Ban Gu's political ups and downs. Is this conclusion well-grounded This tentative opinion is open to discussion.

Abstract:This article examines two existing "academic regions" in Chinese anthropology:the Southeastern and Southwestern models of anthropology.The author points out that the "bifurcation" of Southeastern "complex"of communities,lineages,markets,and folk religions and Southwestern "ways of being ethnic"has created a serious problem for the anthropology of Chinese civilization.He also argues that to further "internal understandings"of either region,it is necessary to think "externally" — to bring "external relationships" into "internal structures".The author has written extensively on sinological anthropology and ethnology as well as Chinese social science in general.In this context,he criticizes anthropologies in China and abroad of their common negligence of the relationships which have played important roles in the configuration of the regions under the empire-turned nation.

Abstract:Examining the role of China's sub-national regions in the country's dynamic entanglement with globalization has showed how different regions have played diverse roles both in China's economic and social transformations and in changes in the shape and nature of globalization itself. The dynamic global context for China's development, as well as the strategic political and economic concerns of China's leadership, have informed and been informed by regional development. This chapter suggests that they fall into three broad areas. First, the geographical scale, diversity and complexity of China's regions requires a step change in the way in which governments, businesses, investors and others outside China engage with the country. Abstract:This study explores the revival of folk culture in Zhanjiang communities in Guangdong Province, China, through the lens of local narratives. It examines how local narratives, deeply woven into community practices, traditional rituals, dialects, arts and moral values, can shape cultural identity and foster community cohesion. Adopting an ethnographic approach, collecting data from participatory observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis, the research highlights the innovative use of local narratives in community-based legal education, ritual practices, art-inspired activities and a tourism heritage site. The findings suggest that local narratives not only preserve cultural heritage but also empower communities by enhancing social bonds and encouraging greater participation in cultural revival efforts. The study also reveals the role of local norms and customs in making these narratives resonate more deeply with the community members, thereby taming complexity in the constantly-changing society. The research contributes to the understanding of local narratives as a dynamic process, which helps adapt and re-interpret traditions to address contemporary needs while maintaining a connection to the past. By focusing on the specific case of Zhanjiang, this study offers insights into the broader implications of cultural revival in other regions facing similar challenges of globalization and modernization.

Abstract:Traditional Bayu dwellings in China's mountainous regions embody a rich yet underexplored architectural heritage, characterized by unique cultural and regional attributes. This study addresses the gap by investigating the architectural typologies, spatial distribution, and cultural influences of these dwellings. Employing a mixed-methods approach within the framework of cultural geography, the research integrates qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Data collection was conducted in three phases: (1) field surveys and documentation of 67 heritage-listed dwellings and 164 traditional villages; (2) collection of geographic data using GIS tools, including Digital Elevation Model (DEM) analysis; and (3) comprehensive literature review of historical and cultural records. Data analysis utilized statistical methods, including second-order cluster analysis, and spatial analysis with ArcGIS. The findings identify four primary dwelling types and delineate four architectural cultural zones shaped by geographical segregation, economic exchanges, and ethnic interactions. This study contributes to a broader understanding of the architectural culture and regional characteristics of the Bayu region, offering valuable insights for cultural heritage preservation and informing sustainable development strategies.
