Abstract:This research aims to develop a novel dual-active/barrier protective pigment composed of modified micaceous iron oxide (MIO) with polyaniline (PAni) for zinc-rich epoxy coatings. This innovative pigment (PAni@MIO) was synthesized by in-situ polymerization of aniline on the MIO surface. The characterization techniques, such as Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) analysis, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS), confirmed the successful grafting of PAni onto the MIO surface. The corrosion mitigation capabilities of the epoxy coatings with PAni@MIO particles were appraised in intact and scratched conditions by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray tests, respectively. The EIS measurements and the salt-spray test unveiled an extended cathodic protection efficacy of the zinc-rich coatings with PAni@MIO particles. Moreover, the adhesion strength of the coatings in both pre-exposure and post-exposure conditions to salt spray showed superior adhesion strength for the PAni@MIO sample.
