Abstract:The application of the membrane technology in removal of CO2 from closed spaces in recent years was summarized.The current status of study,advantages and disadvantages of supported liquid membranes,a membrane-based gas absorption,hydrogel membranes and novel facilitated transport composite membranes used for the removal of CO2 from closed spaces were presented respectively.In view of the shortages of these membrane technologies in removal of CO2 from closed spaces,the development trend of the research was also proposed.
Study on the kinetics of Ca-based CO2 sorbent of carbonation and calcination for adsorption enhanced reforming process

Abstract:A nanoscale CaCO3 was used as precursor for CO2 adsorbent. The properties of calcination followed by carbonation were studied to pursue the reaction condition of as a criterion of reaction section and diffusion section. The simulation results showed that a relative deviation of CO2 adsorption ratio of the reaction section and diffusion section were lower than 3.5 and 0.86% respectively. The lower decomposition reaction condition under low CO2 partial pressure and easy to be regenerated of nanoscale Ca-based CO2 adsorbent were unparalleled. The nano Ca-based CO2 sorbent has an attractive potential to be used in the adsorption enhanced reforming process for producing hydrogen. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 2008 AIChE Spring National Meeting (New Orleans, LA 4/6-10/2008).

Abstract:This study reports a preparation method of a new moisture swing sorbent for CO2 capture from air. The new sorbent components include ion exchange resin (IER) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a binder. The IER can absorb CO2 when surrounding is dry and release CO2 when surrounding is wet. The manuscript presents the studies of membrane structure, kinetic model of absorption process, performance of desorption process and the diffusivity of water molecules in the CO2 absorbent. It has been proved that the kinetic performance of CO2 absorption/desorption can be improved by using thin binder and hot water treatment. The fast kinetics of P-100-90C absorbent is due to the thin PVC binder, and high diffusion rate of H2O molecules in the sample. The impressive is this new CO2 absorbent has the fastest CO2 absorption rate among all absorbents which have been reported by other up-todate literatures.

Abstract:With the global modernization progress accelerated increasingly,carbon dioxide (CO_2) is emitted at a terrific speed,consequently,which contributes to a succession of disasters like global warming and sea level rise.Developing technologies of CO_2 separation,capture, sequestration and usage have gained an overwhelming focus by international scientists.Recently, adsorption methods to CO_2 capture becomes a potential process with its typical characteristics like low energy consumption,high corrosion resistance and steady performance.Improving adsorbents performance including huge adsorption capacity,high adsorption rate,good selectivity and regenerative stability is the key to success.Therefore,this paper summarizes the recent advances in different kinds of adsorbents such as activated carbon,A/X/Y zeolite, MCM/SBA zeolite,activated alumina and so on.Moreover,some problems which need to be resolved and the research directions of adsorbents in future are presented.

Abstract:Research progress in carbon dioxide absorption process was reviewed,existing methods of absorbing carbon dioxide at home and abroad were introduced,including physical absorption,membrane absorption,chemical absorption,ionic liquid method,electrochemical method and O2/CO2 combustion method.Characteristics of various absorption methods and their research status were introduced,meanwhile the chemical absorption method widely used in industry was emphasisly discussed,advantages and defects of ionic liquid method were analyzed by comparison with other organic solvent,and some new technology methods were prospected.

Abstract:Progress of CO2 adsorption,separation and capture using carbon-based adsorption materials in recent years are reviewed.With the global warming effects becoming significant,how to decrease the emission of CO2 as well as how to concentrate,separate and reuse the emitted CO2 have become one of the key problems that mankind faced.Carbon-based adsorption materials play an important role in the field of gas separation due to their good adsorption performance and well-developed porous structure.Meanwhile,these materials can be employed under very broad working conditions because of their stable chemical properties.Thus,carbon-based adsorption materials,as potential candidates for adsorption,capture and separation of CO2,show many advantages over many other adsorption materials.

Abstract:Due to the intensification of the greenhouse effect and the emphasis on the utilization of CO 2 resources, the enrichment and separation of CO 2 have become a current research focus in the environment and energy. Compared with other technologies, pressure swing adsorption has the advantages of low cost and high efficiency and has been widely used. The design and preparation of high-efficiency adsorbents is the core of the pressure swing adsorption technology. Therefore, high-performance porous CO 2 adsorption materials have attracted increasing attention. Porous adsorption materials with high specific surface area, high CO 2 adsorption capacity, low regeneration energy, good cycle performance, and moisture resistance have been focused on. This article summarizes the optimization of CO 2 adsorption by porous adsorption materials and then applies them to the field of CO 2 adsorption. The internal laws between the pore structure, surface chemistry, and CO 2 adsorption performance of porous adsorbent materials are discussed. Further development requirements and research focus on porous adsorbent materials for CO 2 treatment in industrial waste gas are prospected. The structural design of porous carbon adsorption materials is still the current research focus. With the requirements of applications and environmental conditions, the integrity, mechanical strength and water resistance of high-performance materials need to be met.

Abstract:As atmospheric CO 2 levels rise, the development of physical or chemical adsorbents for CO 2 capture and separation is of great importance on the way towards a sustainable low-carbon future. Porous organic polymers are promising candidates for CO 2 capture materials owing to their structural flexibility, high surface area, and high stability. In this review, we highlight high-performance porous organic polymers for CO 2 capture and summarize the strategies to enhance CO 2 uptake and selectivity, such as increasing surface area, increasing interaction between porous organic polymers and CO 2 , and pore surface functionalization.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) adsorption from air and storage is a developing technology that can achieve negative carbon emissions, therefore easing climate deterioration. However, adsorbing CO 2 from air is still a challenge when compared to the high CO 2 concentration sources such as flue gas and syngas because it is hard to separate the steady and dilute target gas accurately with a moderate approach. Most related literatures focus on the development of adsorbents for higher adsorption capacity and lower regeneration energy consumption. However, studies on practical factors and adsorption processes are also necessary for engineering applications. Based on research of the CO 2 adsorption, an introduction to recent advances in dilute CO 2 adsorption using physical or chemical adsorbents is presented, and practical factors are emphasized. From the aspect of structure-property relationships, porous structure optimization of adsorbents is discussed for better equilibrium capacity and adsorption kinetics. Effects of practical parameters (such as moisture, fluctuating temperature, and oxygen) on working performance, especially stability of adsorbents, are revealed. Moisture influences are complex and multifaceted, so possible mechanisms of the moisture influences are summarized to help readers understand. Adsorption processes of capturing CO2 from air are also discussed and compared, distinguishing from the adsorption processes with other feeds. Energy supply and gas-solid contactors which are vital in practical adsorption process are discussed separately.

Abstract:The development of improving energy efficiency and developing clean energy is relatively slow, so the efficient separation and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas using some porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted much attention. This paper mainly focuses on current research and development on carbon dioxide adsorption in MOFs. Initially, the traditional synthesis methods and the new MOF methods in recent years and the activation methods that improve the shortcomings of new methods are all reviewed. Besides, pristine MOFs with adjusting the ligands is also introduced because it is considered an alternative to enhance the adsorptive performance. Furthermore, MOFs incorporated with graphite oxide, carbon nanotubes, activated carbon, zeolites, and ionic liquids to construct composite materials and apply in CO2 are also summarized. Finally, the expectation on this application is also presented.

Abstract:At present, the excessive emission of carbon dioxide has threatened people 's living environment and future development. More and more countries have begun to pay attention to carbon emission reduction. China has set the dual-carbon strategic goal of “carbon dioxide content reaches its peak” and “carbon neutrality”. According to the research on carbon dioxide capture technology by many scholars at home and abroad, it is found that the use of chemical absorbents to capture carbon dioxide is a relatively low cost, less technical difficulty, and can be widely put into industrial production. In this paper, several common chemical absorbents such as hot potassium alkali method, organic amine absorption method, amino acid salt, ionic liquid and phase change absorbent are reviewed. Through the research of various kinds of absorbents by researchers from various countries, their reaction principle, performance advantages and disadvantages, research status are introduced, and the future development direction of carbon dioxide negative emission technology is analyzed.

Abstract:Building a carbon–neutral world requires the removal of excess CO2 that has already been dumped into the atmosphere. The technologies have been well established to remove carbon dioxide directly from ambient air, or "direct air capture" (DAC). DAC is still in its infancy, with many challenges remaining. Sorbents are central to the capture of CO2 from ambient air. Many sorbents have been reported to take up CO2, but they all have advantages and disadvantages. Recent advances in material synthesis and surface chemistry have resulted in new generations of CO2 sorbents. Development needs to progress quickly, because global warming will not wait. We summarize recent progress on designed sorbents for CO2 capture from ambient air. There are mainly six typical technologies for DAC, including physical sorption, sorption by strong bases, sorption by amine-modified materials, sorption by aqueous amino acid solution followed by precipitation with a guanidine compound, moisture-swing sorption, and electrochemical-swing sorption. Existing research works have put forward future perspectives and directions of sorbent materials for DAC technologies.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been a growing threat to human society. Selective capture of CO2 remains challenging with global importance. Recent works on porous materials demonstrated their potential and effectiveness in ameliorating the CO2 problem. This review will summarize the progress in advanced porous materials such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks and porous organic polymers with tailored pore microenvironment and functionality for selective capture of CO2 over the past decade. The application of porous adsorbents for CO2 capture under important scenarios such as flue streams, biogas and direct air capture is presented. We discuss the design strategies for custom-made structure and functionality of porous materials that have led to high-performance CO2 capture with the separation efficiency (e.g., high capacity, selectivity, molecular sieving, moisture resistance) as well as efficient regeneration performance. In addition, this review also concludes the current existing challenges combined with potential directions for future development of porous materials towards industrial CO2 capture.

Abstract:Fossil fuel-fired thermal power plants are a major source of CO_2 emissions.The direct removal of the latter from high-temperature flue gases can contribute to a decrease in system energy losses.Hence,increasing attention has been directed to the research and development of high-temperature CO_2 adsorbents and absorbents.Analyzed and compared were the carbon-based adsorbents,zeolites and hydrotalcite-like compounds in high-temperature CO_2 adsorbents as well as lithium-based absorbents and calcium-based absorbents in high-temperature CO_2 absorbents.Chemically modified hydrotalcite-like compounds at a temperature in excess of 140℃ possess the highest CO_2 adsorbing capacity among high-temperature adsorbents. At a temperature of 600 ℃ or higher the precipitated calcium carbonate and CaO/Ca_(12)Al_(14)O_(33) in calcium-based absorbents have a relatively high absorbing ability and cyclic reaction activity.In consideration of the existing problems regarding the above-mentioned high-temperature adsorbents and absorbents the authors have proposed as focuses of research the following items: high-temperature adsorption/absorption mechanism,the enhancement of the ability of cyclic adsorption/absorption of CO_2 and the improvement of related preparation technology.

Abstract:The primary challenge that hampers the widespread use of carbon-based adsorbents for CO2 storage is their low adsorption efficiency. There has been a disagreement among researchers regarding how H2O influences CO2 adsorption in these adsorbents. To address this, a detailed study was conducted by density functional theory and adsorption experiments. The adsorption of CO2 by H2O was examined on carbon surfaces modified with different oxygen functional groups at the molecular level. The results demonstrated that carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, improved the polarity of the carbon surfaces. This enhancement facilitated the adsorption of CO2. The introduction of carboxyl groups increased van der Waals interactions between the carbon surface and CO2, while the introduction of hydroxyl groups facilitated the formation of hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl and CO2. These interactions stabilized the adsorption configuration of CO2. Since the local polarity of H2O exceeds that of CO2, H2O preferentially adsorbs, potentially occupying the adsorption site of CO2. Furthermore, the van der Waals interaction formed between H2O and CO2 might impede CO2 adsorption, thereby reducing co-adsorption energy. The experimental results align with the simulation outcomes. This study presents a novel approach for developing carbon-based adsorbents that efficiently capture CO2 under wet conditions.

Abstract:The increasing demand for energy all around the world has led to a rise in greenhouse gases (GHGs), of which carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important. CO2 is largely responsible for global warming and climate change. Processes such as carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), which have an effective role in climate mitigation, seem to be promising. In recent years, porous carbons, particularly activated carbons (ACs), have rapidly emerged as one of the most effective adsorbents of CO2. However, the implementation of pristine ACs in the real world is still hindered due to their physical and weak adsorption, which makes these adsorbents sensitive to temperature and relatively poor in selectivity. Hence, the surface modification of ACs is essential in order to improve their surface area, pore structure and alkalinity. Numerous studies have reported lignocellulose-based ACs as very promising adsorbents of CO2. In this review, the sources, health and environmental effects of CO2, and the abatement methods of GHGs are described. In addition, the capture and separation of CO2 from gas stream using various types of lignocellulose-based ACs are summarized. Furthermore, the key factors controlling the adsorption of CO2 by ACs (characteristics of adsorbents, preparation conditions, as well as adsorption conditions) are comprehensively and critically discussed. Finally, future research needs and prospective research challenges are summarized.

Abstract:Direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 is a carbon-negative technology that is not limited by time and geography, and can contribute to the realization of the “dual-carbon” goal. This paper reviews the current development of direct air capture of CO2, focuses on four mainstream solid adsorption DAC technologies, namely, MOFs, solid amine materials, alkali metal-based adsorbents, and moisture-altering materials, and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages in terms of energy consumption, cyclic stability, and adsorption capacity; in addition, the paper analyzes the engineering applications of solid adsorbent materials and demonstrates the potential of these technologies in practical applications; finally, it summarizes the challenges faced by the existing DAC adsorbent materials and puts forward the future development direction.

Abstract:The quaternary amine (QA) functionalized adsorbent using water swing method has broad application prospects in capturing CO 2 in ambient air. However, poor kinetic performance and limited adsorbents remain a huge challenge. This work used D296 resin powder and polyethersulfone (PES) as the carrier to prepare a structurally controllable D296/PES membrane material. Quantitative studies were conducted on the effects of internal properties (Polyethylene glycol to polyethersulfone ratio, resin powder size) and external environmental conditions (humidity and temperature) on CO 2 adsorption performance of D296/PES membrane materials. The results showed that the porous resin had good kinetics, and the half adsorption time was 6 min, which was much lower than that of the gel resin about 2400 s. The smaller the resin particle size, the larger the specific surface area and pore size of the membrane material, and the larger the surface area of the resin exposed to CO 2 atmosphere. The increase in the contact area between the resin particles and CO 2 gas will promote CO 2 adsorption behavior. The higher the relative humidity, the slower the adsorption rate of the membrane material. Under the condition of high relative humidity of 42.3% and 62.5%, interface water can affect the internal structure of the adsorbent and hinder the diffusion of CO 2 . The increase in temperature has a promoting effect on the CO 2 adsorption process. Higher temperatures increase the diffusion rate of CO 2 and H 2 O, accelerating the adsorption reaction. The research results can provide basic data for the application of CO 2 capture in different situations. Abstract:Rapidly increasing concentration of CO 2 in the atmosphere has drawn more and more attention in recent years, and adsorption has been considered as an effective technology for CO 2 capture from the anthropogenic sources. In this paper, the attractive adsorbents including activated carbons and amine-modified materials were mainly reviewed and discussed with particular attention on progress in the adsorbent preparation and CO 2 adsorption capacity. Carbon materials can be prepared from different precursors including fossil fuels, biomass and resins using the carbonization-activation or only activation process, and activated carbons prepared by KOH activation with high CO 2 adsorbed amount were reviewed in the preparation, adsorption capacity as well as the relationship between the pore characteristics and CO 2 adsorption. For the amine-modified materials, the physical impregnation and chemical graft of polyethylenimine (PEI) on the different porous materials were introduced in terms of preparation method and adsorption performance as well as their advantages and disadvantages for CO 2 adsorption. In the last section, the issues and prospect of solid adsorbents for CO 2 adsorption were summarized, and it is expected that this review will be helpful for the fundamental studies and industrial applications of activated carbons and amine-modified adsorbents for CO 2 capture.
