Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel concept for an abstract algebra course at the secondary school level. Against the backdrop of findings from mathematics education research, we discuss benefits that arise from teaching abstract algebra to secondary school students. We derive suitable content items as well as educational ideas on how to implement them into mathematics classrooms. We build on frameworks from mathematics education research to design a teaching-learning sequence that enables a beneficial learning trajectory across three units—the result is a coherent teaching concept that encompasses Magmas in a hands-on way. It can be used for either extra-curricular activities or advanced courses in mathematics classes, and can be of benefit for mathematics learners.

Abstract:We provide a theoretical framework for analysing and comparing different forms of organizing introductions to mathematical analysis at the secondary level, then illustrate it by two characteristic examples from certain periods of change in the 20th century, as they occurred in Denmark. We conclude by extracting from this a fundamental dilemma for the teaching of analysis at secondary level in view of the requirements and affordances provided by computer algebra systems on the one hand, and contemporary utilitarian school pedagogies on the other hand.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the information platform—intelligent cloud of vocational education (ICVE), this paper integrates ideological and political education into Advanced Mathematics teaching and, through the teaching content design of two courses—with the second important limit formula and the concept of definite integral and the content display of its application in classroom teaching, briefly introduces the curriculum reform and its results of Advanced Mathematics teaching in our school. Different from the traditional mathematics teaching methods, the arrangement of pre-class tasks improves students’ ability of investigation and practice, and the introduction of cases makes students see through the trap of campus loans. Through the idea of division in the concept of definite integral, it can also be similar to the idea of the Chinese thinker Xunzi’s thought “perseverance makes a great learner,” which shows that “hard work” leads to students’ mastery of knowledge and skills which can not be achieved overnight, thus achieving the purpose of ideological and political education for students. Teachers do not spend most of their time in explaining and using formulas, but draw relevant formulas and definitions vividly through the introduction of cases, and then combine actual cases to apply mathematical knowledge. In this way, they impart mathematical ideas and carry out ideological and political education as well.

Abstract:The book "A Course in Constructive Algebra" (1988) shows the way of understanding classical basic algebra in a constructive style similar to Bishop's Constructive Mathematics. Classical theorems are revisited, with a new flavour, and become much more precise. We are often surprised to find proofs that are simpler and more elegant than the usual ones. In fact, when one cannot use magic tools as the law of excluded middle, it is necessary to understand what is the true content of a classical proof. Also, usual shortcuts allowed in classical proofs introduce sometimes useless detours. In order to understand clearly a problem, prescience may be a handicap.

Abstract:With the increasing enrollment of general higher vocational colleges every year, the inconsistency between the knowledge level and ability of the enrolled students and ideological and political education hinders the realization of the teaching purpose of the school to a great extent. Advanced mathematics is a compulsory basic course for college students and an important subject for realizing the teaching purpose. In order to achieve the teaching purpose and improve the teaching quality and level of mathematics in higher vocational colleges, we must deepen the reform of teaching contents in advanced mathematics courses in colleges, and integrate mathematical knowledge with ideological and political education organically, giving full play to the teaching characteristics of advanced mathematics courses while fulfilling the ideological and political education for students. Moreover, ideological and political education is also combined with interactive advantages by means of interactive teaching. This paper briefly discusses how to integrate advanced mathematics course with ideological and political education. By analyzing the actual teaching cases of ideological and political education and advanced mathematics courses, the content of classroom teaching is discussed.

Abstract:Undergraduate students of mathematics continue to solve equations in virtually any course they attend, just as they did in secondary school -- yet what do they learn about equations and their solutions at university? Are they capable to combine elements of abstract algebra and real analysis to assess what it means to solve an equation, in particular, what it means for an equation to be solvable -- or not? In this paper, we present a mathematical and didactical analysis of these questions, illustrated by examples from a capstone course for future Danish high school teachers.

Abstract:We describe the design and implementation of lessons in undergraduate abstract algebra that integrate applications to teaching high school mathematics. Each lesson consists of a pre-activity, class activity, homework set, assessment questions and detailed instructor notes. The included applications intend to bridge advanced mathematics concepts to secondary school mathematics content for prospective secondary mathematics teachers, as well as provide instructors with a useful resource. Each lesson includes four guiding features: addressing meaningful content; making connections to mathematics teaching; emphasizing active learning; and providing comprehensive notes for instructors. Interviews with instructors and their students document how the instructors adapted the lessons to their classrooms and how the lessons influenced undergraduates' mathematical understanding.

Abstract:Linear algebra is a professional basic course for science and engineering students in colleges and universities. This course focuses on discussing the linear theory of finite dimensional space, which is highly logical and abstract. Examination is an important way and means to urge students to study consciously and check the effects of teaching and learning. It is also an effective guiding measure for learning behavior, and it is also a method often used to distinguish, discover and select talents. It is an important measure to integrate the idea of mathematical modeling into the reform of mathematics teaching in colleges and universities. Based on the idea of mathematical modeling, this paper calculates the assessment parameters by MCMC method, and realizes the accurate test of online learning achievement. Experimental results show that user satisfaction and performance are high.
