Abstract:By using PDP (plasma display panel) characteristics of self-luminescence, thin structure, high brightness and uniform luminescence, a novel surface lamp-house based on PDP technology was developed to apply in a special space which needs thin illuminator. To overcome PDP'S shortage of low luminous ef- ficiency, many important modifications are accomplished in panel structure, phosphors material, working gas, manufacturing process and drive circuit. The improved surface lamp-house has parameters as follows.thickness less than 4 ram, luminance more than 350 cd/m2, color temperature 6500 K and luminous effi-ciency 4 lm/w. The study result of surface light source PDP will help to improve the photoelectric proper-ties of image PDP.
Optical Design in Packaging and Illuminating System for High Power Light-Emitting Diodes for Projection System

Abstract:High power Light-Emitting Diodes are used as the illuminating system of the portable projection system more recently. Through analysis the optical structure of high-power LEDs, the LED's optical model and package were simulated and the luminous intensity distribution diagram was obtained. According to the rectangle illuminating requirement of the projection system (the ratio of illuminating length and width is 4:3), a pair of reflective fly eye lens illuminating system with the characteristic of high-bright and uniformity illuminating was designed. Experimental results showed that greater than 85% of the uniform degree of illumination, the output light energy utilization ratio of 80% and the angle of divergence of 38 degree on the object plane were obtained while using the white LED as the light source with illuminating model of Lambertian distribution, luminous flux of 120lm and angle of divergence of 150 degree. This system will be fit for the portable and mini-projection system and other small light-emitting area, uniformity illuminating projection system.

Abstract:A mercury-free flat fluorescent lamp with an arclike electrode is developed to improve luminance and luminous efficacy and to prevent discharge contraction. The influences of the rising time of a driving waveform and the gas mixture under different gas pressures on luminance and luminous efficacy are studied. The experimental results show that the luminance and luminous efficacy increase as the gas pressure and Xe content increase. The luminance of about 7500 cd/m(2) can be achieved at a pressure of 60 kPa with Ne-Xe (30%). The maximum luminous efficacy of the system, including the inverter, is about 23.7 lm/W at a pressure of 50 kPa with Ne-Xe (30%). Compared with the gas mixture of Ne-Xe (30%), when the gas mixture of Ne-Xe (32%)-He (8%) is used, the luminance and ignition voltage increase. In addition, the luminous efficacy for a steep rising edge of a waveform within 400 ns can be increased about 10% higher than that for a gradual rising edge above 800 ns.

Abstract:Through analyzing the effects of ultra high pressure (UHP) mercury lamp's dimension and its distance from the detector on the measurement of light distribution curve, an automatic equipment based on computer interface technique and photoelectric conversion technique was constructed to obtain the exact light distribution curve of UHP lamps. Program time delay and software filtering were used to delete the interference of the drive current and the mechanical vibration, so the measuring precision was improved. The data measured by the equipment not only can comply with the requirement of illumination system simulation, but also can help the light source designer to ameliorate the UHP lamp's burner and electrode.
Research on the Dimming Characteristics of Short Arc Ultra-high Pressure Mercury Lamps for Projection Applications

Abstract:The voltage, current and power are measured for short arc ultra-high pressure mercury lamps (UHP) with rating power 250 W driven by 50 Hz square waveform power supply. It is found that the curve slope of voltage-current characteristics is positive in most of the power range, and negative around 170 W. The photometric, colorimetric and electric parameters are measured with an integrating sphere system couple with a spectrometer in UHP dimming experiments. The results show luminous flux increases with power linearly. The luminous efficacy and color rendering index (CRI) reduce with power reduction because of the decrease of spectral continuum. The mercury pressure are calculated with the full width at the half maximum (FWHM) of 546 nm spectral band, which is 6.2-11.0 nm according to the mercury pressure 15.3-25.8 MPa for UHP power 43-258 W.

Abstract:In recent years, the rare-earth elements in white light-emitting phosphors have a problem of increased demand and high price. To overcome these disadvantages, defects have been considered to act as new efficient luminescent centers to replace rare-earth elements. In this work, a rare-earth free self-activated orange light emitting phosphor of single-phase magnesium boron nitride, Mg3BN3, was successfully designed and synthesized by a relatively simple solid-state reaction. Its crystal structure and electronic structure have been measured using Rietveld refinement on the basis of X-ray diffraction data and density functional theory (DFT). The results show that Mg3BN3 crystallizes in a centrosymmetric hexagonal phase with plenty of N[double bond, length as m-dash]B[double bond, length as m-dash]N double bonds and has a direct bandgap. The SEM and TEM images and Raman spectra exhibit the sample's good dispersibility and great crystallinity. Under excitation at 397 nm, a broad emission band with orange light emission peaked at 617 nm can be obtained. It is speculated to result from the defect energy levels formed by vacancies, which can also lead to tunability of the emission peak at about 100 nm. The thermal quenching shows that Mg3BN3 at 200 °C still has more than 40% of the initial intensity at room temperature. All these results indicate that the self-activated light emitting phosphors of Mg3BN3 are a potential candidate for n-UV LED applications.

Abstract:Non-rare-earth Mn4+-activated red-emitting oxide phosphors have emerged as potential alternatives of typical Eu2+ doped nitrides owing to broad-band absorption, narrow-band emission, high color purity and low cost. In this work, highly efficient CaAl12O19:Mn4+ microspheres with uniform size distributions were first prepared by combining an epoxide-driven sol-gel method with heat treatment in oxygen atmosphere. The spherical morphology is beneficial to reduce scattering of light to enhance the photoluminescence of the phosphor. This phosphor shows red emission attributed to Mn4+: 2Eg → 4A2g spin-forbidden transition in the range of 600~750 nm under excitation at 340 nm. Partitioning Mg2+ in the host was found to enhance Mn4+ luminescence because of charge balance effect and the proposed mechanisms were discussed. The luminescence quantum yield of CaAl11.7576O19:0.0024Mn4+, 0.24Mg2+ microspheres which were heat treated for 4 h at 1300 °C was measured to be 56.1%. The white LED device based on the glass ceramic containing phosphors was found to show a high-color-rendering index of 96 and a low correlated color temperature of 4522 K. The results indicate that CaAl12O19:Mn4+ microspheres have great potential for near-ultraviolet LEDs on full-spectrum lighting.

Abstract:Efficient and low-cost lighting technologies can alleviate energy and environmental crises and help achieve the goal of "dual carbon". Traditional cold white light is not suitable for indoor lighting as the blue light emitted damages the human eye, stimulates the nerves, and causes physical and psychological damage. Hence, the TbSSA@ZnO/SnO 2 green phosphor with a wire-in-tube structure was constructed and mixed with commercial blue and red phosphors to assemble a warm white light emitting diode (W-WLED). The shell of ZnO/SnO 2 can effectively protect the homemade terbium complex (TbSSA) core to resist the high operating temperature of 200 °C, and the introduction of Sn 4+ promotes the luminescence intensity. The assembled W-WLED has a related color temperature (CCT) of 2858 K, color purity ( R a ) of 89.8, and external quantum efficiency of 12.4%, while stable illumination is retained under the floating driving currents. The prepared W-WLED also has high color reproduction and warm white color temperature, which has important practical significance in the field of semiconductor lighting with complex working environment and high color rendering requirements.

Abstract:For many years the low pressure mercury lamps are widely used in general lighting and ultraviolet radiation. Because of its strong 254 nm ultraviolet and 185 nm vacuum ultraviolet radiation, it has played a very active role in environment, agriculture and medical fields. In environmental treatments, 254 nm radiation has been used for disinfecting the air and water, while the 185 nm radiation is applied to the degradation of organic matter. In this paper, the 185 nm radiation of high output low pressure mercury lamp, with 80 cm in length, was measured in a customized vacuum chamber based on Keitz method. The radiant characteristics of the lamp was discussed, indicating that the 185 nm radiant efficiency reached the maximum of 11% at the cold spot temperature 70 degrees C while it is negatively related to the discharge current.
A novel green‐emitting luminescent materials with broad‐band emission for high‐quality warm white LED indoor lighting

Abstract:Following the rapid growth of lighting technology, and in order to satisfy the higher requirement of people for lighting, the high‐quality warm white lighting for indoors has stolen much limelight of researchers. Herein, a novel green phosphor Ce3+ doped Ca2GdHf2(AlO4)3 with garnet structure which can be used for warm white LED was developed by solid state method. Under 410 nm light excitation, the phosphor exhibits broad emission spectrum from 450 nm to 700 nm with FWHM more than 120 nm, and it also owns high internal quantum efficiency of 83.6%. The energy transfer among the activators was identified according to the concentration quenching and decrease of decay time, which belongs to dipole‐dipole interaction. The calculated activation energy is about 0.255 eV, indicating the moderate thermal stability. The fabricated white LED device with low CCT (3807K) and high CRI (Ra=89.2) demonstrates its superiority and possibility of practical application in high‐quality warm white LED fields for indoor lighting fields.

Abstract:As a promising alternative to traditional light sources, the phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) have rapidly emerged in the fields of lightings and displays. In our work, a novel single-component warm white phosphor Ca2Sr(PO4)2:Mn2+, Eu2+ was successfully designed and synthesized based on multicenter emission and crystal site engineering. The phosphors were confirmed to have a high phase purity according to X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Further XRD Rietveld refinements unraveled the preferential site occupations of both alloying element (Sr) and dopants (Mn and Eu). The feasible site engineering can confine the Mn and Eu dopants in different Ca sites, resulting in regulated optical behaviors. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also employed to shed light on the site engineering from the theoretical aspects, which suggest an enlarged formation energy gap for different site occupations after Sr alloying. Finally, a single-component WLED based on a near-ultraviolet (n-UV) chip was successfully fabricated with high color rendering index (Ra = 91.2) and luminous efficacy (65.2 lm/W). The device has also proved its excellent stability via a series of tests, showing the great potential of Ca2Sr(PO4)2:Mn2+, Eu2+ as phosphors in lighting applications.

Abstract:Emission from nanocarbon as a point white-light source is studied in several scientific experiments, i.e., a demonstration of chromatic phenomena of a refractive lens, a diffractive Fresnel phase zone plate (FPZP), and a squared zone plate. Results show that white light from nanocarbon exhibits good coherent properties and can be an ideal point light source in comparison with other normal lighting sources, e.g., a light-emitting diode (LED), a He-Ne laser, and a semiconductor laser diode (LD). Dispersion and even diffraction phenomena could be analyzed this way as well.

Abstract:The existing white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are mostly fabricated with downshifting phosphors and ultraviolet (UV) or blue light LED chips. To achieve unconventional upconversion white-light-emitting phosphors, a novel strategy by encapsulating upconversion nanoparticles and organic dyes into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) at room temperature is put forward. Herein, lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (NaYF4:Yb, Tm@NaYF4 core-shell UCNPs), dye 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl 6 (p dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) and dye Coumarin 6 (C6) with blue, red and green light emission, respectively, are encapsulated together into ZIF-8 through a facile one-pot solid-confinement conversion process. Owing to their appropriate spectral overlaps and efficient energy transfer processes between two pairs of UCNPs/DCM and UCNPs/C6 within ZIF-8, the optimized UCNP/DCM/C6@ZIF-8 thin film exhibits high-quality white-light emission upon a commercial 980 nm LED chip with ideal CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.33), high color rendering index (CRI) value of 93 and moderate correlated color temperature (CCT) value of 5567 K. This strategy paves the way for other upconversion phosphorous nanoparticles and fluorescent molecules for WLEDs applications excited by near infrared light.

Abstract:High-luminance light sources are challenging to achieve with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to power droop. Since laser diodes (LDs) do not suffer from power droop, they can be used as an alternative. A novel, to the best of our knowledge, high-luminance white light source was developed utilizing LDs combined with a sediment silicone/phosphor composite. The deposition of this sediment phosphor inside an aluminum spacer on top of a sapphire backplate ensures optimal thermal management. To enhance the optical performance, the sapphire plate is coated with a custom-designed blue pass filter in order to recycle most of the converted light that is emitted in the backward direction. The maximal obtained luminance of this light source is 103 MCd/m2 at a luminous flux of 3119 lm.

Abstract:The white light emitting diodes(W-LEDs) were fabricated by using InGaN-based blue LED chip as primary light source and YAG phosphors as luminescence conversion materials.The current illumination characteristic of W-LED,the power efficiency of the integrated lighting source were studied and discussed for the practical application.Luminance performances of the W-LED lamp integrated in series were studied.The preferable applied qualifications are supplied as follows: the uniformity of the W-LED devices and the stable current supplied by drive circuit are should be guaranteed,showing that the W-LED lamp processes much lower power consumption and longer lifetime.
White-Light Emission From A Single-Emitting-Component Ca9gd(Po4)(7):Eu2+,Mn2+ Phosphor With Tunable Luminescent Properties For Near-Uv Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Ca9Gd(PO4)(7) and Ca9Gd(PO4)(7):xEu(2+), yMn(2+) were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The refinement confirmed that Ca9Gd(PO4)(7) belongs to space group R3c (No. 161) with unit cell parameters a = 10.4526 angstrom, c 37.3769 angstrom, V 3536.61 angstrom(3), and Z = 6. Upon the excitation from 250 to 430 nm, the Ca9Gd(PO4)(7):xEu(2+), yMn(2+) phosphors exhibit a broad blue-green emission band at 490 nm and a red emission band at 645 nm, which originate from the Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions, respectively. The varied emitted color from blue-green through white and eventually to red can be achieved by properly tuning the relative ratio of the Eu2+ to Mn2+ ions in the phosphors through the energy transfer from the Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions. The energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ was demonstrated to be a resonant type via a dipole-quadrupole reaction by the luminescence spectra, energy transfer efficiency, and decay curves of the phosphors. Furthermore, the critical distance of the Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions has also been calculated. More importantly, compared to the multiple emitting components of white LEDs system, single-emitting-component phosphors would enable easy fabrication with perfect stability and color reproducibility.
Closing the Deep-Blue Gap: Realizing Narrow-Band Deep-Blue Emission with Strong n-UV Excitation by Cationic Substitution for Full-Spectrum Warm W-LED Lighting

Abstract:Since the strong blue light from the conventional blue chip has negative effects on human health, near-ultraviolet (n-UV) white light-emitting diodes (W-LEDs) have been widely studied. However, the photoluminescence spectrum generated by tricolor (blue, green, and red) phosphors contains a notable cavity in the deep-blue region (400–430 nm), which reduces the color quality. In this work, we report a novel series of narrow-band deep-blue-emitting phosphors with strong n-UV excitation, Ln2Si2O7:Bi3+ (Ln = Gd, Y, Lu, Sc), and realize the tuning of emission from 422 to 403 nm via cationic substitution, which bridges the deep-blue gap. All of these phosphors are effectively excited by n-UV radiation at approximately 370 nm and exhibit narrow-band deep-blue emission with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) < 50 nm. Among them, Sc2Si2O7:Bi3+ generates 403 nm deep-blue emission with a 38 nm FWHM under 372 nm n-UV excitation, with high luminescence intensity and excellent thermal stability. Finally, 365 nm n-UV-pumped phosphor-converted (pc) W-LED devices are fabricated by combining Sc2Si2O7:Bi3+ and commercially available phosphors, and they have a high color-rendering index (Ra) of 95.4 and a low correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3736 K. This result suggests that these phosphors have potential applications in full-spectrum warm white lighting.
