Abstract:Superstructured fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology has emerged as an attractive means to produce compact, and potentially low-cost in-fiber devices for a variety of lightwave applications. In this paper, a secure optical communication system based on tunable FBG arrays is described. Utilizing the inherent characteristics of FBG array to decompose broadband pulses simultaneously in wavelength and time, one broadband light pulse reaching a series of different Bragg gratings may be split into a number of separated pulses, each with different wavelength and is positioned at different time. To recover the original pulse, an inverted grating array is needed at the receiver side, i.e., the transmission is secure in case that the exact structure of the FBG array is unknown. Some of the factors affecting the process of encryption/decryption are indicated. To further increase the security of the system, theories about bent functions are presented and applied to generate bent sequences so as to charge the modes of FBG arrays because of the bent functions' excellent cryptographic properties. Simulations results are presented and analyzed to show the feasibility of the system. The paper is concluded with a discussion of the advantages for such an optical encryption/decryption system.

Abstract:A novel wavelength detection and demodulation technique of fiber Bragg gratings sensors is put forward. The principle, experimental setup and results of the sensor are analyzed. The new technique converts detections of shift of center reflecting wavelength into detection of light intensity extremum. Furthermore, a spatial division multiplexing system of Bragg gratings sensors based on the novel technique is developed. The multiplexing numbers are not confined by bandwidth of light source and tunable scope of single fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:The large scale fiber grating array sensing system has found lots of applications in fields distributed in underwater, land, sky and space, which is often configured using TDM/WDM multiplexing schemes. In recent years, the integrated fabrication method without any fiber splicing points plays important roles in providing the largest system high reliability and robust detection performance. However, in such fiber grating array, the synthesis of fiber grating array without bringing any damage becomes a difficult problem. The existing reconstruction algorithms are only used for single fiber bragg grating. This paper will start with the fiber grating array which is formed by two low reflectivity FBGs and regarded as a special chirp fiber grating, then a proposal of synthesis the fiber grating array in time domain ispresented, which can also suppressthe multi-reflections induced signal crosstalk. The research results will provide a solution tothe synthesis of the integrated fiber grating array and a new signal processing method to suppress the array signal crosstalk.

Abstract:A review of the key technologies which limited the wide applications of fiber Bragg grating sensors (FBG) were given. The first important technology was the practicability of the de-modulators of wavelength shift. The second was the discrimination between strain and temperature effects, either of which could cause wavelength shift. An analysis and comparison of four main interrogating configurations, such as F-P filter, were presented, including their measurement principles, advantages, disadvantages and applications. The methods of discriminating stain and temperature effects were concluded.

Abstract:The current status of the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor technology was reviewed. Owing to their salient advantages, including immunity to electromagnetic interference, lightweight, compact size, high sensitivity, large operation bandwidth, and ideal multiplexing capability, FBG sensors have attracted considerable interest in the past three decades. Among these sensing physical quantities, temperature and strain are the most widely investigated ones. In this paper, the sensing principle of FBG sensors was briefly introduced first. Then, we reviewed the status of research and applications of FBG sensors. As very important for industrial applications, multiplexing and networking of FBG sensors had been introduced briefly. Moreover, as a key technology, the wavelength interrogation methods were also reviewed carefully. Finally, we analyzed the problems encountered in engineering applications and gave a general review on the development of interrogation methods of FBG sensor.

Abstract:In-fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are one of the most exciting developments in the field of optical fibre sensors in recent years. Compared with conventional fibre-optic sensors, FBG sensors have a number of distinguishing advantages. Significant progress has been made in applications to strain and temperature measurements. FBG sensors prove to be one of the most promising candidates for fibre-optic smart structures. This article presents a comprehensive and systematic overview of FBG sensor technology regarding many aspects including sensing principles, properties, fabrication, interrogation and multiplexing of FBG sensors. It is anticipated that FBG sensor systems will be commercialized and widely applied in practice in the near future due to the maturity of economical production of FBGs and the availability of cost effective interrogation and multiplexing techniques.

Abstract:Fiber lasers have wide applications in fiber communication, and laser micromachining. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is one of the key components of all fiber lasers. The fabrication technique of FBG that uses femtosecond laser has received considerable attention owing to its advantages such as wide applicability for various fiber materials, simple process, and fabricated FBG with high temperature resistance compared with the traditional FBG inscription technique. It has been widely used in all fiber lasers. This study introduces the basic methods, characteristics, and advantages of the technique of inscribing FRG with a femtosecond laser. Then, the latest research advances in the application of femtosecond laser-inscribed FI-IGs on fiber lasers with different wavelengths and types arc demonstrated. Finally, the future development of this technology is discussed.

Abstract:To achieve data-driven intelligence in engineering applications, the key requirements for distributed optical fiber sensor networks are large capacity, long distance, dense distribution, fast response, and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Combining the traditional optical reflectometry techniques with the large-scale fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array fabricated on-line by a fiber drawing tower, multiplexing and demodulation of thousands of FBG sensors is successfully demonstrated, which greatly expands the application of FBG sensors to the field of distributed sensing. In this work, the fabrication, demodulation, and applications of large-scale FBG arrays are reviewed. Firstly, the on-line fabrication technology and process of large-scale FBG arrays are introduced. Secondly, the demodulation techniques including wavelength demodulation based on optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) and optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR), as well as phase demodulation based on phase-sensitive OTDR are reviewed, where we mainly focus on the key parameters such as multiplexing capacity, demodulation speed, spatial resolution, and SNR. Last, the applications of the large-scale FBG arrays are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg grating has embraced the area of fiber optics since the early days of its discovery, and most fiber optic sensor systems today make use of fiber Bragg grating technology. Researchers have gained enormous attention in the field of fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensing due to its inherent advantages, such as small size, fast response, distributed sensing, and immunity to the electromagnetic field. Fiber Bragg grating technology is popularly used in measurements of various physical parameters, such as pressure, temperature, and strain for civil engineering, industrial engineering, military, maritime, and aerospace applications. Nowadays, strong emphasis is given to structure health monitoring of various engineering and civil structures, which can be easily achieved with FBG-based sensors. Depending on the type of grating, FBG can be uniform, long, chirped, tilted or phase shifted having periodic perturbation of refractive index inside core of the optical fiber. Basic fundamentals of FBG and recent progress of fiber Bragg grating-based sensors used in various applications for temperature, pressure, liquid level, strain, and refractive index sensing have been reviewed. A major problem of temperature cross sensitivity that occurs in FBG-based sensing requires temperature compensation technique that has also been discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) are one of the most popular technology within fiber-optic sensors, and they allow the measurement of mechanical, thermal, and physical parameters. In recent years, a strong emphasis has been placed on the fabrication and application of chirped FBGs (CFBGs), which are characterized by a non-uniform modulation of the refractive index within the core of an optical fiber. A CFBG behaves as a cascade of FBGs, each one reflecting a narrow spectrum that depends on temperature and/or strain. The key characteristic of CFBGs is that their reflection spectrum depends on the strain/temperature observed in each section of the grating; thus, they enable a short-length distributed sensing, whereas it is possible to detect spatially resolved variations of temperature or strain with resolution on the order of a millimeter over the grating length. Based on this premise, CFBGs have found important applications in healthcare, mechanical engineering, and shock waves analysis, among others. This work reviews the present and emerging trends in CFBG sensors, focusing on all aspects of the sensing element and outlining the application case scenarios for which CFBG sensors have been demonstrated.

Abstract:Fiber optic shape sensing has a great potential for diverse medical and industrial applications to measure curvatures and even shapes. Featuring small footprint, strong immunity to radiation and high flexibility integration, fiber optic shape sensing opens up a new era in the fields of position tracking, human wearable devices, catheter navigation, bending detection and deformation monitoring. This paper focuses on a branch of fiber optic shape sensing techniques, with an emphasis on shape sensing based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Key technologies of shape sensing based on FBG are introduced in detail together with a critical view of its evolutionary trend. In addition, the major problems that exist in FBG shape sensing have been discussed in the end.

Abstract:Abstract Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is the most widely used optical fiber sensor due to its compact size, high sensitivity, and easiness for multiplexing. Conventional FBGs fabricated by using an ultraviolet (UV) laser phase-mask method require the sensitization of the optical fiber and could not be used at high temperatures. Recently, the fabrication of FBGs by using a femtosecond laser has attracted extensive interests due to its excellent flexibility in creating FBGs array or special FBGs with complex spectra. The femtosecond laser could also be used for inscribing various FBGs on almost all fiber types, even fibers without any photosensitivity. Such femtosecond-laser-induced FBGs exhibit excellent thermal stability, which is suitable for sensing in harsh environment. In this review, we present the historical developments and recent advances in the fabrication technologies and sensing applications of femtosecond-laser-inscribed FBGs. Firstly, the mechanism of femtosecond-laser-induced material modification is introduced. And then, three different fabrication technologies, i.e., femtosecond laser phase mask technology, femtosecond laser holographic interferometry, and femtosecond laser direct writing technology, are discussed. Finally, the advances in high-temperature sensing applications and vector bending sensing applications of various femtosecond-laser-inscribed FBGs are summarized. Such femtosecond-laser-inscribed FBGs are promising in many industrial areas, such as aerospace vehicles, nuclear plants, oil and gas explorations, and advanced robotics in harsh environments.
