Abstract:The current status of the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor technology was reviewed. Owing to their salient advantages, including immunity to electromagnetic interference, lightweight, compact size, high sensitivity, large operation bandwidth, and ideal multiplexing capability, FBG sensors have attracted considerable interest in the past three decades. Among these sensing physical quantities, temperature and strain are the most widely investigated ones. In this paper, the sensing principle of FBG sensors was briefly introduced first. Then, we reviewed the status of research and applications of FBG sensors. As very important for industrial applications, multiplexing and networking of FBG sensors had been introduced briefly. Moreover, as a key technology, the wavelength interrogation methods were also reviewed carefully. Finally, we analyzed the problems encountered in engineering applications and gave a general review on the development of interrogation methods of FBG sensor.

Abstract:The fluorescence fiber gratings are fabricated the st ructure of fiber Bragg gratings (shortly FBGs) on Hydrogen-loaded Erbium-doped fluorescence fibers.The properties of temperature and strain for λ _B and τ have been studied experimentally,the fitting equa tions for λ_B(T,ε)and τ(T,ε) are given.The results show,like plain FBGs,the Bragg wavelength of fluor escence fiber gratings have well properties in response to temperature and strai n,the thermal and stress sensitivity is 11.1 pm/℃ and 1.19 pm/με. Moreover, t he lifetime of fluorescence fiber gratings represent good linearity with tempera ture or strain changes,the thermal and stress sensitivity is 0.59 μs/℃ and 6.1 6 ns/με,respectively.Finally,the results also provide novel ways of solving th e cross-talking problem or simultaneously measuring of temperature and strain.

Abstract:With the increase in the demand for large-capacity optical communication capacity, multi-core optical fiber (MCF) communication technology has developed, and both the types of MCFs and related devices have become increasingly mature. The application of MCFs in the field of sensing has also received more and more attention, among which MCF fiber Bragg grating (FBG) devices have received more and more attention and have been widely used in various fields. In this paper, the main writing methods of MCF FBGs and their sensing applications are reviewed. The future development of the MCF FBG is also prospected.

Investigation on Sensing Characteristics of Fiber Bragg Gratings Based on Soft Glass Fibers

Abstract:Soft glass fibers can transmit the wavelengths longer than 2μm, which can realize the sensors in mid-infrared waveband. Compared to the FBG sensors based on silica fibers, FBG sensors based on soft glass fibers have the advantages of high sensitivity. For the first time, the sensing characteristics of FBGs based on different soft glass fibers are analyzed and compared. The sensing characteristics of temperature, strain and pressure of FBGs based on tellurite, chalcogenide and fluoride fibers are numerically simulated and compared. By analyzing and comparing a series of sensitivity curves of FBGs, we get some conclusions. For temperature sensing, the FBG based on the As2S3 fiber has the highest sensitivity coefficient of 175.7 pm/°C, while the FBG based on the silica fiber has the lowest sensitivity coefficient of 11.3 pm/°C. The Bragg wavelengths are red-shifted with the increase of temperature. For strain sensing, the FBG based on the β-ZnS (CVD) fiber has the highest strain sensitivity coefficient of 2.76 pm/με, while the FBG based on the silica fiber has the lowest strain sensitivity coefficient of 1.22 pm/με. The Bragg wavelengths are red-shifted with the increase of strain. For pressure sensing, the pressure sensitivity of the FBG based on the As2S3 fiber is the highest and the Bragg wavelength has is red-shifted; the pressure sensitivity of the FBG based on the silica fiber is the lowest and the Bragg wavelength is blue-shifted. These results will be significant for optical sensing and fiber lasers in mid-infrared waveband.

Abstract:As a special kind of Bragg grating, phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) has attracted extensive attention because of its extremely narrow transmission window and excellent sensing performance. The main purpose of this manuscript is to discuss the PS-FBG with special sensing characteristics and explore the influence of different inscription technologies on the sensing characteristics of PS-FBG by comparing the existing inscription methods. The sensing characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of PS-FBG with different structures are analyzed.

Abstract:We get the binary Taylor expansions of the effective refractive index and period of fiber Bragg grating (FBG), verify theoretically that the temperature-strain and strain-temperature cross sensitivities are the same, and make a conclusion that the thermo-optical coefficient and the elasto-optical coefficient are both proportional to the square of the effective refractive index. The calculation equations of temperature and strain are listed, and the method of calculation is expatiated. The wavelengths of FBG under different temperatures and strains are measured, and the cross sensitivity coefficients of temperature-strain and strain-temperature are -1.4743x10(-6) nm/(degrees C.mu epsilon) and -1.3948x10(-6) nm/(mu epsilon.degrees C). We place the FBG hydrostatic leveling instrument on the open-air balcony for one day, monitor the wavelength changes of FBG, and then calculate and get a more accurate solution to the changes of liquid depth in the hydrostatic level instrument. The experimental results show that using the calculation equations of temperature and strain can improve the measurement accuracy of FBG.

Abstract:Vibration sensing is critical to monitor and ultimately preserve the health state of engineering systems. These systems with a large structure are typically working in some harsh environments including strong magnetic fields. However, traditional electrical sensors are difficult to accurately measure the vibration under harsh environments. Besides these instinct advantages of normal fiber optic sensors (FOS) sensors such as compact size, passive sensing, resistance to electromagnetic interference, etc., fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have a capability of distributed sensing based on wavelength demodulation and resistance to light intensity fluctuation and unwanted fiber bending losses. Such merits lead them to be a hot topic in FOS field and excellent candidates for vibration sensing. Three types of FBG-based vibration sensors have been classified based on the difference of vibration-strain coupling way to FBG in this survey, which are pasted FBG-based, axial property of FBG-based and transverse property of FBG-based, respectively. FBG-based vibration sensors' principles and designs have been introduced and discussed. Recent advances in the applications of FBG-based vibration sensors have been investigated. The limitations and prospects of the FBG-based vibration sensing technologies have been analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pressure sensors have the potential to replace conventional voltage sensors due to their compact size, resistance to electromagnetic interference, excellent safety, distributed sensing, and numerous other intrinsic benefits. It is frequently employed in the domains of civil engineering, aerospace, and medicine. Our work examines two types of sensitized FBG pressure sensors, namely FBG pressure sensors with innately improved sensitivity and FBG pressure sensors with extrinsically increased sensitivity. Our work examines microstructured fiber Bragg grating pressure sensors and polymer fiber Bragg grating pressure sensors for FBG pressure sensors with innately heightened sensitivity. Our research examines metal-mechanical FBG pressure sensors and polymer-mechanical FBG pressure sensors for extrinsically sensitized FBG pressure sensors. This report also summarizes the benefits and drawbacks of various FBG pressure sensors and temperature compensation techniques. Finally, the future of FBG pressure sensors is examined.

Abstract:Abstract Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is the most widely used optical fiber sensor due to its compact size, high sensitivity, and easiness for multiplexing. Conventional FBGs fabricated by using an ultraviolet (UV) laser phase-mask method require the sensitization of the optical fiber and could not be used at high temperatures. Recently, the fabrication of FBGs by using a femtosecond laser has attracted extensive interests due to its excellent flexibility in creating FBGs array or special FBGs with complex spectra. The femtosecond laser could also be used for inscribing various FBGs on almost all fiber types, even fibers without any photosensitivity. Such femtosecond-laser-induced FBGs exhibit excellent thermal stability, which is suitable for sensing in harsh environment. In this review, we present the historical developments and recent advances in the fabrication technologies and sensing applications of femtosecond-laser-inscribed FBGs. Firstly, the mechanism of femtosecond-laser-induced material modification is introduced. And then, three different fabrication technologies, i.e., femtosecond laser phase mask technology, femtosecond laser holographic interferometry, and femtosecond laser direct writing technology, are discussed. Finally, the advances in high-temperature sensing applications and vector bending sensing applications of various femtosecond-laser-inscribed FBGs are summarized. Such femtosecond-laser-inscribed FBGs are promising in many industrial areas, such as aerospace vehicles, nuclear plants, oil and gas explorations, and advanced robotics in harsh environments.

Abstract:Brillouin dynamic gratings (BDGs) in optical fibers have been developed for more than a decade and gained considerable interests in different photonics fields. Based on its features of flexibility and all-optical generation, BDG has been explored for many applications including distributed optical fiber sensing (temperature, strain, transverse pressure, hydrostatic pressure, and salinity), all-optical signal processing, all-optical delay, microwave photonic filter, and ultrahigh resolution optical spectrometry. Especially in recent years, besides the longitudinal BDG in the backward stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), the transverse BDG associated with the forward SBS has been proposed for substance identification and characterization of optical fiber diameter. In this paper, a systematically theoretical analysis of BDG in optical fibers is given and its recent advances in applications is summarized.

Abstract:A review of the key technologies which limited the wide applications of fiber Bragg grating sensors (FBG) were given. The first important technology was the practicability of the de-modulators of wavelength shift. The second was the discrimination between strain and temperature effects, either of which could cause wavelength shift. An analysis and comparison of four main interrogating configurations, such as F-P filter, were presented, including their measurement principles, advantages, disadvantages and applications. The methods of discriminating stain and temperature effects were concluded.

Abstract:In-fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are one of the most exciting developments in the field of optical fibre sensors in recent years. Compared with conventional fibre-optic sensors, FBG sensors have a number of distinguishing advantages. Significant progress has been made in applications to strain and temperature measurements. FBG sensors prove to be one of the most promising candidates for fibre-optic smart structures. This article presents a comprehensive and systematic overview of FBG sensor technology regarding many aspects including sensing principles, properties, fabrication, interrogation and multiplexing of FBG sensors. It is anticipated that FBG sensor systems will be commercialized and widely applied in practice in the near future due to the maturity of economical production of FBGs and the availability of cost effective interrogation and multiplexing techniques.
