Abstract:Lightning protection of urban power grids is critical to the safe and stable use of electricity in cities. In the paper, the electromagnetic transient program (EMTP) was used to simulate the lightning protection of a 220kV substation reconstruction project with long cable inlet wire. Using the intersection method, the maximum value of the lightning invasion overvoltage on the substation equipment was calculated when the overhead incoming line connected to the cable was struck by lightning. The internal and external insulation levels of the substation equipment were checked. The simulation results show that the overvoltage exceeds the insulation level of the substation equipment without the arrester installed next to transformer, so it is necessary to install the arrester on the transformer side. The research results can be used as reference for engineering design.
Experimental Study of Protection Measures for Preventing 10 KV Insulated Conductors from Breakage Caused by Lightning Stroke

Abstract:Many protection products of avoiding breakage caused by lightning stroke have been used and have good effect in Beijing. But there are still some breakages existing for the insulated conductors after installing the protection products according to the company technology standard. For these reasons, an experimental research is carried out in order to consummate the former research results of breakage caused by lightning stroke, and provides instructions for the power supply department. The contents of the study are the breakage caused by lightning stroke tests of overhead insulated conductors, the breakage caused by lightning stroke tests of overhead bare conductors, the proof-test of the clamping post insulators and the capability tests of the gaps with the power arc. In the short-time high power arc tests, the two protection products can protect the insulated conductors from being burn down. The problems for those products are analyzed and suggestions are given. Through comparing the burning conditions of the insulated conductors and the bare conductors in case of long-time low power arc tests, it is found that possibilities of the conductors breakage exist when single-phase to earth fault occurs.
A Regionalized Evaluation Method for Indirect Lightning Stroke Flashover Rate in 10kv Distribution Networks

Abstract:Lightning damage is one of the main factors that interfere with the reliable transmission of electrical energy in 10kV distribution networks. An effective lightning risk evaluation is a prerequisite for carrying out the lightning protection design. Due to the low insulation level of 10kV distribution network, induction lightning damage is obvious. Reducing the indirect lightning stroke flashover rate can effectively reduce the overall lightning stroke flashover rate of 10kV distribution network. At the same time, the distribution network has the characteristics of short length, many branches and widely distributed, and lacks detailed line parameters. Compared with the transmission lines of 110kV and above, a regionalized lightning damage evaluation is more needed for 10kV distribution. In this paper, a regionalized evaluation method for indirect lightning stroke flashover rate is proposed. With grid method, the normalized calculated values of the indirect lightning stroke flashover rate in each grid are obtained by considering the relationship between lightning ground flash density, altitude, and the effect of building shielding on the indirect lightning stroke flashover rate, which can be used for lateral comparison of induction lightning damage between regions, discovering areas with serious induction lightning damage, and achieving the optimal allocation of lightning protection resources.
Research on lightning intruding waves in 220 kV GIS substation

Abstract:The lightning intruding waves in 220 kV GIS substation model was built by using ATP-EMTP software, calculate the lightning over-voltages on electric equipment in substation with different running modes, different grounding resistance and lightning shielding failure. The results show that the maximum over-voltage on electric equipment happened in single bus with single transformer; The smaller the grounding resistance, the smaller the over-voltage value on electric equipment in substation; the lightning shielding failure will not cause harm to substation. Finally, this paper used statistical methods to calculate the years of the safe operation of the substation. It is concluded that the safe running times of substation can meet the requirement when arresters were installed at the incoming lines and the entrance of transformer.

Abstract:Experimental methods and models were analyzed,such as standard method,electrical geometric model(EGM),leader progression model(LPM) and shielding failure probability model.The standard method is easy for satisfactory use in lightning protective shield design for normal lines;electric-geometrical model is rational and easy for analyzing EHV and UHV lines,mountainous lines and multi-circuit lines.The leader progression model and shielding failure probability model give a reasonable interpretation of rotated flashover in physical mean,but they have rather complex calculation procedure and for time being can not be widely used for engineering application at long-distance transmission lines.Detailed discussion was made on relevant parameters of electro-geometrical model,from which the calculation of striking distance and striking distance factor was made using equation recommended by IEEE WG.For regions of mean annual thundery day more than 40,the thundering rate at ground surface can be taken as 0.1 time / km2 thundery day.Based on statistics of thundering number on 35～220 kV in China,the thundering rate for some thunderous regions can be calculated using equation recommended by CIGRE.
Simulated Calculation and Analysis of Lightning Performance of UHV A.C. Transmission Line

Abstract:Lightning stroke is the key problem for safe operation of UHV transmission line. Because of the large scale of the tower and the high operation AC voltage, the shielding design of tower became one of the most important aspects of the UHV transmission line design. This paper was based on the typical towers of China 1000 kV AC transmission line: waist-type single-circuit tower, cup-shape single-circuit tower and double-circuit tower. The lightning protection performance of all the three towers was calculated and analyzed with EGM and EMTP. The results show that the cup-shape tower performs best in the prevention of lightning shield failure while the waist-type tower performs worst. And in the prevention from back flashover, the lightning trip-out rate of the double-circuit tower is much bigger than waist-type tower and cup-shape tower, mostly because of its larger height. The lightning stroke trip-out rate of the three types of typical towers for 1000 kV transmission line were compared under different shield angles, ground slope angles and ground resistance. The results also indicate that the trip-out rate of all these types of UHV towers will rise obviously as the shield angle or ground slope angle gets larger.

Abstract:In order to reduce the lightning trip-out rate, a kind of insulated tower head and cross arms are used in 10kV overhead distribution lines, which may lead to the increase of lightning surge amplitude and create hazards to the equipment in substations. It's crucial to analyze the insulation coordination of 10kV substations under such condition. In this paper, an EMTP model for a 10kV distribution line and substation is developed. The lightning surges and influence factors on mean time between failure (MTBF) of substation are analyzed. The results show that overvoltage on equipment of substation are greatly increased and the MTBF of main transformer and surge arrester are reduced and below the allowable limit after the use of insulated tower head and cross arms. The MTBF of main transformer are greatly influenced by the front time of lightning current, the peak current distribution and the pole grounding resistance. An additional arrester at the incoming line and the increase of absorption energy of arrester are adopted as the effective countermeasures to improve the insulation coordination of such 10kV substation.

Abstract:To guarantee the lightning protection reliability of transmission line with ultra-high tower and great span, on the basis of the classical electric geometry method (EGM), lightning strike width of transmission line is calculated with the striking distance theory. Then the lightning strike trip-out rate of transmission line with ultra-high tower and great span is calculated with improved EGM. With such model the effects of striking distance expression, striking distance factor, angle of lightning incidence on lightning strike width and lightning strike trip-out rate are analyzed. For transmission line with ultra-high tower and great span, it is concluded that the lightning strike width based on striking distance theory is much smaller than the calculation result based on regulation method. And the results show that the lightning strike trip-out rate reduces with the reduction of lightning strike width and increase of striking distance factor.

Abstract:The lightningproof measures home and abroad are summarized: the characteristics and limitations of conventional lightningproof measures are analyzed such as erecting lightning conductor,reducing grounding resistance,installing polymeric housed metal oxide line-surge arrester and etc,and the new lightningproof techniques are introduced such as some new structures of transmission lines,lightningproof gap,controllable discharge lightning rod and etc;the direct lightning stroke protection for substation,the protection of incoming section,and the lightningproof measures for transformer,circuit breaker and reactor are discussed,and resistance reduction techniques of substation grounding grid are studied.It is indicated that the study on lightningproof measures for HV transmission lines and substations is a comprehensive subject,and in practice of the lightningproof project,the design of a reasonable comprehensive lightningproof project based on economic and technical comparison and the new lightningproof techniques suitable for special geographical conditions are two main study directions in the future.

Abstract:The insulation coordination of the UHVDC converter station is important for the security and economic of UHVDC system. In this paper we have built the Zhexi station and it's 2kM line in segment's mode, EMTP/PSCAD has been used to analysis the equipment's lightning overvoltage. To analysis the most serious situation, the selection of AC field's operation mode has been discussed in detail, measures to limit the lightning overvoltage have been introduced. To get the equipments' maximum overvoltage, the polarity of station's working voltage has been studied. Calculation shows that, with the same polarity of lightning and station's working voltage, the equipments' phase to ground voltage reaches to the maximum, while when the lightning's polarity is opposite to the station's, the equipments' two ends voltage reach to the maximum.

Abstract:Calculates and analyzes the lightning intruding wave overvoltage protection along 330kV transmission line in 750kV Yinchuandong substation by numerical simulation with PSCAD/EMTDC.Considering some factors,including the different operation mode and lightning strike location,also calculates and analyzes the infection of the impulse grounding resistance of transmission tower,the lightning arresters arranging and parameter for protection effect.The calculated results indicate the scheme of lightning protection in this project is reasonable.

Abstract:Lightning surge intrudes substation along transmission line to endanger the equipments in a substation.Lightning overvoltage is generated by backflash and shielding failure on the overhead line.In this paper,the overvohage of 750 kV AIS substation caused hy lightning intruding wave is investigated,and the resulting overvoltage magnitudes at several basic points in the substation(including input line,bus bar and power transformer)are computed.A simulation model is established considering the electric equipments,transmission line,steel tower,inner connecting line,and bus bar together as a network.The lightning intruding overvoltage of different running modes and configuration schemes of MOA are calculated by using EMTP (electro-magnetic transient program),and an optimal MOA configuration is presented.The result shows that lightning protection of substation can be improved by introducing MOA and optimizing its configuration based on accurate overvohage analysis.

Abstract:Abstract The lightning rod is an important lightning protection facility in transformer substations, which has a good protective effect for the compact equipment, while its safety performance is often neglected. The lightning rod in the 220kV transformer substation is up to tens of meters, the collapse of the lightning rod results in not only serious damage to the equipment, but also severe power failure. In this paper, the causes of the tilt of the lightning rod were analysed, and the installation requirements for the new lightning rod was proposed, which could effectively ensure the safety of the lightning rod.

Abstract:Theories and some main protection methods of lightning-caused breaking of insulation-covered conductors in 10 kV overhead distribution networks were introduced.The main designing,structure and technology of a new type of lightening protection hardware were put forward.High current heat stabiliazation test,lightning attack high voltage test and main frequency arc burning test were performed which concerned three technical characterisitics of lightening protection hardware.The results indicated that lightening protection hardware could meet the requirements of lightning-caused breaking of covered conductors in 10 kV distribution networks.The lightening protection hardware needs no maintenance and it is practical where towers cannot be connected to ground in city.

Abstract:Due to the weak lightning protection level of 35kV line, the lightning trip rate of 35kV line is high. The research on 35kV lightning protection is of great significance to improve the reliability of power supply. Based on the actual characteristics of 35kV lines in Hunan province, a lightning protection device with large current capacity is proposed, which can carry 120kA(4/10μs) current as a whole. This research verifies the performance of the arrester from the aspects of valve plate selection, current test and insulation coordination, so as to ensure the overall performance of the arrester. The lightning arrester with large current capacity designed in this paper has reliable performance. It is suitable for the lightning protection of 35kV line and can improve the reliability of power supply.

Abstract:Lightning is an important factor affecting the safe and reliable operation of power transmission and distribution lines. As most power transmission and distribution lines are built in mountainous areas with complex terrain and changeable weather, the lightning accidents in mountainous areas are much higher than those in plain areas. Firstly, the mechanism of lightning damage and common measures of lightning protection are analyzed. Then, taking Lufeng line in Yunnan province as the object, taking the topographic and geomorphic characteristics of the line, the activity intensity of lightning strike and the line structure into consideration, three measures are compared by increasing the number of insulator string pieces, reducing the grounding resistance of poles and towers, and erecting lightning conductor across the line. Finally, erecting lightning conductor across the line is adopted to rectify the line. The feasibility and practicability of the rectification scheme are proved by calculation.

Abstract:Substation in China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) plays an important role in the power transformation and distribution network. Once it is hit by lightning, the non-self-recovery insulation of the equipment in the station may be damaged. This article aims to design the lightning protection scheme of substation in CFETR. After identifying the source of lightning risk in the substation, the electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) is used to model the lightning stroke current, transmission lines, and various equipment in the substation and calculate the lightning surge overvoltage. The lightning protection scheme is evaluated according to the simulation results, and the safe operation year is 592.4 a, which meets the standard.

Abstract:Lightning surge intrudes substation along transmission line,which is the threat to the equipments within substation.On the basis of one 750kV substation,the 750kV GIS-GIL system that takes gas insulated line(GIL) as the outgoing line of GIS is established in this paper. Through two type of lightning stroke,that is lightning stroke on the top of a tower and shielding failure,considering the effects of ground angle and ground resistance,the lightning over-voltage on disconnecting switch(DS),circuit breaker(CB),current transformer(CT) and transformer are calcuated in this paper by EMTP when lightning waves intrude into the 750kV GIS-GIL system. According to the over-voltage values on the above equipment,the protective projects adopting metal oxide arrester(MOA) are correspondingly presented. The study indicates that MOA can effectively restrain lightning intruding waves and make sure that the equipments within 750kV GIS-GIL system can work normally.
