Abstract:A method for designing a high dynamic fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) is presented for a class of high spinning carrier with demand of accuracy and range.It is fulfilled by identification of fringes to detect phase error beyond[-π,+ π] with the dynamic range over 40 000 (°)/s,which provides a new simple,effective and high reliability scheme for light of sight (LOS) stabilization and attitude control of navigation systems.

Abstract:With consideration on application, it is presented typical closed-loop and open-loop FOG signal processing scheme used for different application and fulfilled different requirements. Both advantages and disadvantages of each scheme are compared. Fiber optic gyroscope is one of the most prominent components utilized in intertial navigation system in recent years. The signal-processing scheme is the key factor for the improvement of its performances.

Abstract:The basic principle of a dynamic goniometer based on fiber optic gyroscope was introduced. According to this principle, the model on uncertainty of angle measurement results was established and the simulation analysis on uncertainty of measurement results was performed. Furthermore, a series of repetitive experiments with this goniometer at different rotational velocities were carried out. Experiments results showed that they were consistent with the uncertainty got from the theoretical analysis when the confidence level was set to 95% and the evaluation model on uncertainty was effective.

Abstract:The feedback parameter of closed-loop fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) in various engineering applications is discussed. It has been proved that unreasonable feedback parameter will cause great interference and serious distortion to the output signal. Therefore, we build a concise feedback control mode and obtain optimal range of feedback parameter. For different input signals concerned which nearly include all of the application scenarios in practice, detailed simulations and experiments are completed. The results show that the feedback parameter should be small in static applications and moderate for high response requirements. What is more, it should be relatively small when used in low-bandwidth measurement fields to ensure the response performance of low frequency signal and suppress high frequency noise and vice versa. This work plays an important guiding role for related parameter setting in the feedback control system of sensors, especially for gyroscope.

Abstract:The measurement of rotation is of considerable interest in a number of areas. It is not only used in aircraft but also in new application fields such as automobile navigation, antenna/camera stabilizer, crane control, unmanned vehicle control. The FOG with scanning phase-shift based on anti-noise filter circuit and improved DSP-software algorithm, and the FOG using scanning phase-shift modulation are presented in the paper. The results of experiment show that the proposed FOG is insensitive to interference intensity and changes of light contrast, the stability of FOG is improved greatly

Abstract:Since the 1970s, the interferometric fiber-optic gyroscope (IFOG) technology based on the Sagnac effect which boasts unique advantages, has developed rapidly with the increasing application and maturity of optical devices such as optical fibers, light sources, and phase modulators in optical communication. Over the past 40 years, this technology has moved from the laboratory to various practical fields such as land, sea, air, and space. This paper reviews the recent development of the IFOG technology. Firstly, the exploration process of this technology from the birth of the Sagnac effect to its practical applications is introduced. Secondly, the classical minimum reciprocity configuration of IFOGs and the signal processing scheme are described. Then, the research status of this technology in high precision , miniaturization , and application environment adaptability is summarized. Finally, the development and application trends of this technology are analyzed.

Abstract:We evaluate the measurement errors induced by various deleterious effects in an optical passive ring-resonator gyro (OPRG) with a hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF) sensing coil. The uncertainties in measuring rotation rate due to Kerr, Shupe, and Faraday effects are found to be reduced respectively by 2~3, 1, and 1~2 orders of magnitude as compared with an OPRG with a conventional single mode fiber (SMF) sensing coil of similar parameters. The errors due to shot and coherent backscatter noises are larger for the OPRG made of the current state-of-the-art HC-PBF than for the OPRG with a conventional SMF coil, but are expected to reduce in future with improved fiber manufacture technologies.

Abstract:The fiber optic gyro (FOG), which is currently one of the most widely used fiber optic sensors, has firmly occupied a considerable market share of inertial sensors and offers the benefits of high stability and easy integration. The resonant FOG, also known as the RFOG, is a sensor that identifies a rotation rate by employing the use of a fiber ring resonator. It possesses a higher application potential in terms of optical stability and system miniaturization because it is an FOG of the second generation. This review begins with an exploration of the RFOG principle and then moves on to concentrate on the two aspects of RFOG optical noises suppression and signal processing in order to examine the progression of RFOG in the most recent years. Several distinct types of RFOG schemes that have a high application potential are dissected individually; these are the types of schemes that are anticipated to become mainstream application schemes in the not-too-distant future. In the end, the prospect and research challenge of RFOG are presented to help researchers clarify research directions. This article presents an in-depth analysis of the current state of research regarding RFOG-related technologies and offers a forecast regarding the path that the inertial sensor will take in the foreseeable future.

Abstract:As the second generation of the fiber-optic gyro (FOG), a resonant FOG (RFOG) appears as a very viable candidate for a miniaturized optical gyro. However, due to the impediment of laser-induced parasitic noise and system complexity, the actual performance of the RFOG is well below expectations. This paper proposes a novel, to the best of our knowledge, RFOG which is driven by broadband white light rather than a narrow linewidth laser. The fiber-optic ring resonator (FRR) works as a filter, and the rotation under detection is read out from the round trip loss of the FRR. The parasitic noise is effectively avoided due to the low coherence light, and the measuring resolution can be thus improved. In the experiment, a bias instability of 0.012 ∘/h is demonstrated with a 100-m fiber coil and a very simple structure. The proposed method would be a big step forward for making the RFOG practical with high performance and low cost.

Abstract:The resonant fiber optic gyro (RFOG) is a high accuracy inertial rotation sensor based on the Sagnac effect. The existence of various noises, including the nonreciprocal noises such as the polarization noise and the Kerr noise as well as the reciprocal circuit noise, limits the performance improvement of the RFOG. An improved scheme by inserting two in-line polarizers in the polarization maintaining fiber transmission-type resonator has been proposed to suppress the polarization-fluctuation induced drift. Furthermore, the adoption of the air-core photonic bandgap fibers (PBFs) offers a novel solution to reduce the optical Kerr effect. In addition, A digital signal processor is designed to reduce the reciprocal noises and detect the rotation information. A minimum actual rotation of 0.001°/s is achieved. The dynamic range is improved by a factor of 7 and the scale factor nonlinearity is decreased by a factor of 60.

Abstract:In this paper, the development and evaluation of passive optical ring resonator gyroscopes (OPRGs) are critical reviewed. Attention has been paid to the countermeasures against the parasitic noise sources which are encountered in the OPRG including backscattering, backreflection, polarization error, nonlinear Kerr effect, and laser frequency noise. The new progress in a feasible OPRG is shown. In addition, the advanced and complex digital signal processing in the OPRGs is also addressed.

Abstract:A resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) based on a broadband source can avoid the fundamental drawback of coherence detection processing while possessing the greater sensitivity afforded by the finesse of the fiber-optic ring resonator. In this paper, the basic operation principle is presented and demonstrated in detail, and various noise sources, as well as the temperature effect encountered in this broadband source-driven RFOG, are studied and analyzed. Then a combined modulation technique is proposed to suppress the residual backscattering noise. To further reduce the effect of temperature transience, an asymmetric fiber ring resonator is designed. In the experiment, a bias stability of 0.01°/h is successfully demonstrated with a 100 m-long fiber ring resonator of 8 cm diameter in a laboratory environment without temperature control.
