Abstract:This article explores John Fowles’ employment of Metafiction in the French Lieutenant’s Woman. It makes the case that Fowles’ metafiction is motivated by the author’s postmodernist desire to comment upon, undermine and critique the dominant and authoritative narratives in history, the understanding of history and in literary history. Fowles’ novel’s metafiction critiques the Victorian ideology through interweaving metafictional elements into a novel set in the Victorian era and, at least initially, following a conventional kind of plot premise. The Victorian ideology is critiqued through a metafictional reimagining of tropes of Victorian fiction. The novel breaks through the constraints of Victorian fiction in such a way as to fragment itself into multiple conflicting endings. Each of these endings violate the conventions of Victorian fiction in form and content, whilst remaining historically rooted and plausible. The multiple endings expose the fictitiousness of the novel and express John Fowles’ beliefs about the absurdity of human social life.

Abstract:Postmodernism is an important literary theory and Magical Realism is one of its key aspects. .Thus the current study is based on exploring the elements of magical realism in the Alchemist, a novel by Paulo Coelho. The methodology of qualitative nature has been carried out by using close textual analysis with the help of a tool of close reading in the novel. Various elements of magical realism have been explored in this novel by this study. The way the author has used this technique makes the novel appealing and worth reading. The study also proves the novel, as the most successful postmodern text of the current era. The researcher has applied the Close Reading method for current research because the method has enabled researcher to get a better understanding of the text. Finally the results bring light the findings that the text contains the elements of Magical Realism i.e. Fantasy, the mundane/ realworld setting, incorporation of myths, metamorphosis, etc.

Abstract:Many experts on conspiracy theory reduce the phenomenon to its rational, cognitive dimension. 1Yet the aesthetic dimension and narrative pleasure are obvious in conspiracist discourse, whose rhetoric closely follows the codes of popular fiction. Have we not underestimated the quest to “please”? We postulate a continuity between audiences’ attitudes to fiction and to “conspiracy theories”, which have become relatively indistinguishable in the contemporary context of information overload. Umberto Eco’s work is particularly illuminating in this respect, as it focuses on the indistinguishability of the true and the plausible, and metalepsis as a transgression of the fictional pact. The reception of two of his major “conspiracy” novels, Foucault’s Pendulum and The Prague Cemetery, reveals an emancipation of the metaleptic trope: the novelist, although known for his anti-fascism, finds himself accused of complacency towards anti-Semitism.

Abstract:Feminism developed and widened its scope to different disciplines such as literature, history, and sociology. It is associated with various other schools and theories like Marxism and poststructuralism, as well. In the field of literature, feminist literary criticism managed to throw away the dust that cumulated on women’s writing and succeeded in raising interest in those forgotten female artists. Some critics in the field of feminism claim that there are no separate spheres, masculine and feminine, whereas others have opted for post-feminist thinking. Some women writers used metafiction to write literary criticism. Therefore, how do Gaskell and Woolf implement metafiction in their stories? Accordingly, this work aims at shedding light on Wives and Daughters by Gaskell and Orlando by Woolf to tackle metafiction from a feminist perspective. Examples from both novels about intertextuality, narration, and other aspects, that are part of metafiction, will be provided to illustrate how and where metafiction is used.

Abstract:Though David Mitchell's novel Cloud Atlas was only published in 2004, critics have already written a number of articles and book chapters about this work. The complex structure and numerous ideas Mitchell explores lend themselves to viewing the novel through a variety of critical lenses, leading to more articles than one might expect on a novel less than a decade old. Thus far, though, people have been writing on subjects such as the novel's comments on environmentalism, genetics, or cloning, while others focus on Mitchell's view of history. Whenever the novel's structure is discussed, critics spend most of their time identifying Mitchell's literary inspirations or discussing the story-within-story structure as little more than a postmodern trick. However, Mitchell uses metafiction and intertextuality differently than those who have come before him, using such devices as a way of forcing the reader to consider the importance of narrative in one's life and in the world, in general.

Abstract:This essay focuses on Paul Auster’s novel, Invisible (2009), aiming to explore the text’s intricate metafictional dimensions, especially the deployment of metalepsis as the main organizing principle of its narrative structure. The author argues that the novel employs a subtle metaleptic narrative structure, which moves beyond the classical postmodernist phase of textual experimentation, and serves as a means of raising questions of ethical and existential relevance. Metalepsis is construed in the paper as a trope of transgression, whereby its epistemological and ontological functions are regarded as a means to an end, which is the problematization of the interrelation between narrative structure and ethical agency. The main contention of the article is that the novel’s surreptitiously deployed metaleptic structure results in the ontological destabilization of the narrative, which in turn undermines the epistemic function (truth-telling) of the act of confession, so its ethical purpose (atonement, absolution) remains unfulfilled. Abstract:Since cultural studies take narratives as one of the forms through which a culture understands itself and its past, this essay explores two Chinese novellas, 'The True Story of Ah Q' by Lu Xun and 'Yang Zhi Sells His Knife' by Tan Ge, and proposes that while the first-order narrative code (narrating) assumes to reflect and deflect history, the second-order narrative code (commenting) by the implied author 'undercuts the fabric of fiction' in unexpected ways. One of the important types of narrative comments is metalinguistic and meta-discursive, which linguistically technicalizes narratives as artistic accounts of true historical events. Although. metalinguistic and meta-discursive comments carry personal and evaluative burdens, quite a large number of such 'self-conscious narrations' do not necessarily 'go beyond narrating, describing, or identifying.' While constituting a special register in narratives by conglomerating showing and telling on the implied authorial level, they both reflect and deflect history.

Abstract:Undoubtedly, the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st century are notable for the extensive artistic experiment, including metatextual and metafictional phenomena. Such scholars as Gérard Genette, Anna Wierzbicka, Patricia Waugh, Linda Hutcheon, Robert Sholes, and many others focused on the mentioned issues in their research work. Therefore, this paper considers metatextuality and metafiction in the theoretical perspective tracing the origins of metatextuality and its connections with postmodern literature. The terms ‘metatext’ and ‘metafiction’ appeared as rather close in time. Notably, both of them are based on the discursive practices of the late 20th century. However, the term ‘metatext’ originated in the scholarly practice of structuralism. It is obvious that ‘metatext’ was constructed by analogy with the concept of ‘metalanguage’. Either of them does not exist without the initial text (or language). Metatextual elements are important for analyzing styles, genres, types of expression, discursive functions, and more. On the other hand, the term ‘metafiction’ has an obvious connection with genre studies. Metafiction qualifies as a special kind of literary text that became characteristic of the postmodern era. Such features as self-referentiality of artistic expression, introspection, and self-consciousness became essential for postmodern aesthetics. Metatextuality relates to the narrative theory and metacritiсism, while metafictionality is applicable within the intertextual analysis. Thus, the paper highlights an advance of metadiscourse in the cultural consciousness of the late 20th century.

Abstract:The Cabala,one of Thornton Wilder's early fictions,has always been downplayed for its allegedly immaturity.However,this paper calls for a reassessment of its artistic merits in terms of allegorical narrative,and thereby understand Wilder's literary ideal in a more appropriate way.With a detailed analysis of the fiction's title,plot and archetypes,it is concluded that The Cabala is not so much a "period novel" as an allegory that centers on Rom-as-a-trope and reveals the troubling relationship between classicism and the modern time.In this fiction,ambiguity is proved to be an essential strategy undertaken by Wilder to realize a self-reflexive critique of the tradition of allegory itself.

Abstract:Among Malmgren's three types of commentary,one is called the "metalingual comment".Since the concept of metalanguage in literary studies is different from that in linguistics,which consists of metalingual uses and metalinguistic devices,metalingual comments in narratives only refer to discursive comments of a metafictional nature.This paper discusses the narrative and evaluative comments making use of metalingual and metalinguistic devices and proposes that such devices play important roles in narrative fiction.

Abstract:The author examines the features of the narrative structure of the novel of English postmodernism "Morality Play" (Unsworth "Morality Play"). The purpose of this article is to identify the features of the construction of the novel of postmodernism. Postmodern writers tend to transform genres of high literature, making them accessible to mass reading. Moralite is a special kind of dramatic performance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. A detective novel is a phenomenon of mass literature. The detective genre is based on three main elements that form the plot: crime, investigation and solution. In the article, these three elements are considered on the example of the novel "Moralite". Despite the fact that the plot-forming element is a detective component, the author does not fulfill all the genre strategies of the detective. In the presented work, the detective influence of the construction of a postmodern novel will be considered, in which readers are involved in the active process of reconstructing the incident, and the main character finds a solution to all the mysteries and riddles. The relevance of the work is due to the lack of full–fledged Russian-language research on the designated topic - dissertations, collections of articles, monographs. In the novel moralita, the identity of the murderer is not important, the victims are not important. The author is interested in the effect produced by the "performance" played out on the stage. Barry Unsworth demonstrates his vision of creating a new Medieval genre, he shows how this transition to everyday themes took place. One person can change the usual way of life by taking a risk and leading. Wandering comedians, who are the main characters, appear to readers as naive amateur detectives. They are passionate about the process and improve their "Thomas Wells Game", but not for the sake of punishing and exposing the killer. In the process of research, it can be concluded that two main genre layers can be distinguished in the novel – detective and historical. In addition to these genres of features, it can be argued that this is a novel about the genre.

Abstract:Metalanguage is a kind of language used to refer to or describe language per se.Many fictional writers,in addition to adverbials and tags of direct discourse,resort to linguistic terms and metalinguistic devices to describe their fictitious characters' verbal behavior,provide narratorial information,and make implied authorial comments where necessary.This paper analyzes these metalinguistic devices and holds that they do not function in the Jakobsonian sense of glossing,but more importantly,they are traces of authorial obtrusion,narratorial artificiality and verisimilitude,and that due to their linguistic technicality,they are stylistically expressive and discursively meta-narrative as well as impressive.

The novel The French Lieutenant's Woman is a novel which was born in that period. As a metafiction, it has the feature of deconstruction that can be seen in the structures of the novel. At the same time, the deconstruction can be seen in the plots of the novel as well. The novel can be regarded as a typical work of postmodernism and deconstructionism. And this paper focuses mainly on reveling various deconstruction phenomena in the novel and tries to help readers to understand metafiction and deconstructionism better.

Abstract:Magical realism can lay claim to being one of most recognizable genres of prose writing. It mingles the probable and improbable, the real and the fantastic, and it provided the late-twentieth century novel with an infusion of creative energy in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and beyond. Writers such as Alejo Carpentier, Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende, Salman Rushdie, Ben Okri, and many others harnessed the resources of narrative realism to the representation of folklore, belief, and fantasy. This book sheds new light on magical realism, exploring in detail its global origins and development. It offers new perspectives of the history of the ideas behind this literary tradition, including magic, realism, otherness, primitivism, ethnography, indigeneity, and space and time.

Abstract:This article argues that metonymy provides "cognitive roundabouts" that semiotically create more meaning in fictional narrative against the popular views that metonymy provides "referential shorthand" and "communicative shortcuts." In the light of Lakoff and Johnson's observation on the relationship between symbolic metonymy and the comprehension of religious and cultural concepts, it explores the semiotic potentialities of metonymy in constructing fictional reality with special reference to O. Henry's short story "The Cop and the Anthem." It concludes that artistic deployment of metonymic devices comically exploits and explicitizes various conceptual associations and logical relations between the source and the target and requires greater cognitive effort from the reader; in defamiliarizing the fictional representation, the narrative text produces more symbolic meanings and ultimately refamiliarizes the reader with aspects of actual-world reality that are otherwise hardly perceivable.

Abstract:It is of great significance to discuss about the fiction ontology, which relates closely to the art values of the fiction and a good understanding of the relationship between the creation and reading of the fiction.To promote the development of the fic-tion art, it is strongly recommended to get hold of the path in which the contemporary novelists are telling their stories on the ba-sis of the relationship between narration and experience.From the perspective of the post-metaphysics, ontology tends to be con-structed on the epistemology, featured with empathy-centered experience.According to the creative experience of great novel-ists, there are three representative ontologies: vision theory, thought theory and language theory.On the discussion about the different paths they adopt, the value ontology of“what is a good fiction” is to be obtained.In a word, all good fictions share one definite characteristic:artistic tension produced by the integration of complexity and simplicity.
